12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2020 A JER 20:10-13; PS 69:8-10, 14, 17, 33-35; ROM 5:12-15; MT 10:26-33
On this twelfth Sunday of ordinary time, we celebrate Christ Our Lord who is always with us.
In the first reading, God delivered the prophet Jeremiah from the deadly plots of evil men. In
our own day, for those whose trust is solely in this world rather than in God the news of
terrorist events can cause great fear. Let us draw courage and insight from our faith for such
threats are certainly not greater than what God has handled in the history of humanity.
Today’s second reading has a lot in common with the first. Just as God delivered the prophet
Jeremiah from the plots of his enemies, so too in the second reading Paul recounts how Christ
delivered humanity from the terrors caused by our fear of death. Paul draws our attention to a
very important aspect of our salvific history. For, while Adam’s disobedience brought us
death, Christ’s obedience even unto death on the cross, brought us life.
In the gospel, Jesus exhorts us: “Do not be afraid, for everything that is now hidden will be
revealed.” This includes the plans of the evil ones who are always threatening to persecute and
destroy the just. It suffices to note that, Christ knows that fear and the threat of death can
paralyze one. As the Lord of the living and the dead, He knows that physical death is not the
end. Rather, it is a transition to eternity. Hence, he further exhorts us: “Do not be afraid of
those who can kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear him who can destroy both
body and soul in hell fire.”
In these comforting and assuring words of Christ, rest our hope and future as Christians:
“Every hair on your head has been counted. So, there is no need to be afraid!” He is ready and
capable to deliver us from both the consequences of sin, as well as from all the threats that we
face in our daily life. Finally, all we need to do to rest in the protection Christ promised us
today, is simply to believe in Him, to daily renew our faith in Him. It means being true
Christians, people of faith. Of course, it also means submitting completely to Christ.

O HOLY ANGEL at my side, Go to Church for me,
Kneel in my place, at Holy Mass, Where I desire to be.
At offertory, in my stead, Take all I am and own,
And place it as a sacrifice Upon the Altar Throne.
At Holy Consecration’s bell, Adore with Seraph’s love,
My Jesus hidden in the Host, Come down from Heaven above.
Then pray for those I dearly love,
And those who cause me grief, That Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts,
And suffering souls relieve.
And when the priest Communion takes, Oh, bring my Lord to me,
That His sweet Heart may rest on mine, And I His temple be.
Pray that this Sacrifice Divine,
May mankind’s sins efface; Then bring me Jesus’ blessing home,
The pledge of every grace. Amen

Duodécimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
En este duodécimo domingo del tiempo ordinario, celebramos a Cristo Nuestro Señor, que siempre
está con nosotros. En la primera lectura, Dios liberó al profeta Jeremías de las tramas mortales de
los hombres malvados. En nuestros días, para aquellos cuya confianza está únicamente en este
mundo y no en Dios, las noticias de eventos terroristas pueden causar gran temor. Saquemos valor y
conocimiento de nuestra fe por tales amenazas ciertamente no son mayores que lo que Dios ha
manejado en la historia de la humanidad.
La segunda lectura de hoy tiene mucho en común con la primera. Así como Dios liberó al profeta
Jeremías de las conspiraciones de sus enemigos, también en la segunda lectura Pablo relata cómo
Cristo liberó a la humanidad de los terrores causados por nuestro temor a la muerte. Pablo nos llama
la atención sobre un aspecto muy importante de nuestra historia salvífica. Porque, mientras la
desobediencia de Adán nos trajo la muerte, la obediencia de Cristo hasta la muerte en la cruz, nos
dio vida.
En el Evangelio, Jesús nos exhorta: "No tengas miedo, porque todo lo que ahora está oculto será
revelado." Esto incluye los planes de los malvados que siempre amenazan con perseguir y destruir a
los justos. Basta señalar que Cristo sabe que el miedo y la amenaza de muerte pueden paralizar
uno. Como El Señor de los vivos y de los muertos, sabe que la muerte física no es el fin.
Más bien, es una transición a la eternidad. Por lo tanto, nos exhorta además: "No tengas miedo de
los que pueden matar el cuerpo, pero no pueden matar el alma. Más bien, teme al que puede destruir
tanto el cuerpo como el alma en el fuego del infierno".
