NIC NOTES
Dear Parishioners,
So often we hear people saying that going to Church and/or participating
at Holy Mass isn’t that important because they can pray at home. Praying at home is a wonderful thing, but it does not take the place of going to Mass. Private prayer is great. When you pray at home your prayer is personal and one-dimensional. When you come to Mass you pray with your whole being. You use all of your senses. You see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. You use your body by genuflecting, sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, and singing.
When you go to Mass these opportunities are given to you:
1 – You seek forgiveness for your sins. 2 – You learn how God’s Word impacts your life in the homily. 3 – You offer yourself to the Lord. 4 – You experience the miracle of bread and wine changing into the Body and Blood of Christ. 5 – You reach out to others with the Peace of Christ. 6 – You admit that you are not worthy and then come forward to receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. 7 – You receive a special blessing. 8 – You are commissioned to go out and to make the world a better place.
The above are to assist you in realizing why the Mass is so very, very important to participate in.
It is also very important to realize that the Mass is more than entertainment. When entertainment is the model for church worship, the leaders try to induce particular feelings in the audience.
The Mass, however, is just the opposite. It is a ritual in which people bring their own feelings and incorporate them into the Liturgy. That’s why it is possible for two people to attend the same Mass, one grieving the death and the other celebrating the birth, you both feel connected. The whole point is to go beyond feelings into authentic prayer which is the offering of oneself to God in Jesus Christ.
May God through the intercession of St. Helena bless us!
Love and Prayers, Msgr. Nicolo

CATHE’S CORNER
To the Amazing People of Saint Helena Parish, “How Can I Repay the Kindness of Our God?” Last year as I celebrated my Golden Jubilee as a Sister of Mercy, those words spoken by the psalmist became my theme. It is a question I ask myself several times each day. My life has been abundantly blessed, always and in all ways! I deeply love this wonderful ministry at Saint Helena, where God led me thirty years ago. You are so very special to me. All of you have been a gift to me during this sacred time. Your children, my delight! Thank you for entrusting your children to our care. The celebration on Sunday, June 10, was beyond my greatest imagining. Over these thirty years, YOU have been a gift to me and it has truly been “Sacred Time”. Accompanying you through Celebrations, Joys and Challenges offered me the grace of transformation. God blessed me abundantly through each and every child who walked these hallowed SHS halls, both the original school hallways and the new hallways of our updated school and Social and Recreation Center. I am deeply grateful for my time with you. My heart is both tender and hopeful as I move from my Saint Helena time. You will always be with me in the bond of shared love! If you wish to stay in touch, my email is: [email protected] Be assured you will be remembered in my prayer each day. Please, pray for me that I may be open to hearing God’s voice lead me to a new area of service as I continue to question: “How can I repay the Kindness of our God?
With love and gratitude,
Sister Cathe

KEN’S CACHE
REMEMBERING MONSIGNOR RONALD KNOX
There were two famous Knox brothers, sons of the Anglican Right Reverend E.A. Knox, D.D. – Edmund George Valpy Knox and Ronald Arbuthnot Knox. Edmund was the celebrated humorist, the versifier and parodist “Evoe” of Punch, who eventually succeeded to the editor’s chair. Ronald whom Catholics remember better, was the celebrated convert, churchman (monsignor), and author. He was born on February 17, 1888 in Kibworth, Leicestershire, England.
Ronald Arbuthnot Knox had all the proper credentials: Eton, Oxford, Trinity fellow, and as of 1912 Anglican orders. He served as chaplain at Oxford until 1917, and then he converted to Roman Catholicism. Two years later he was ordained a priest, and proceeded to become one of the most influential Catholic apologists in England. He wrote numerous books, from spiritual treatises to erudite detective novels, and was known forever for his witty satire.
In 1925 Ronald Knox returned to Oxford as Catholic chaplain, and regularly took part in Oxford Union debates. He is said to have been perhaps the Union’s most popular speaker ever. He was also a private tutor of note, including to Harold Macmillan. The arrangement was of limited duration, being ended by the Macmillan family for fear of Knox’s Catholicizing influence. The fear may have been misplaced, for in 1957, when Mr. Macmillan, as prime minister, attended Knox’s funeral, he was heard to remark wistfully, “I am too old to change now.”
Knox left Oxford in 1939 to devote himself to a new translation of the Scriptures from the Vulgate. The task was undertaken on the request of Cardinal Arthur Hinsley, who wanted a wholly modern translation characterized by clarity and beauty of language. The Knox Bible, which went through many printings, never achieved the success hoped for it. His contributions are still vibrant in the living Church.
God Bless You!
Deacon Ken
MADELEINE’S MESSAGE
The summer season is a great time of year because of warmth and fun. Summer also provides us with a chance to relax and reflect.
You can take a look at your priorities and see how they line up. In all of your summer plans, don’t forget about God and your obligation to Him.
Thank you to our pastor, Monsignor Nicolo, who is always available and always willing to help with our PREP program when we need him.
We are fortunate for our parish, for all that it offers and for the parishioners who make Saint Helena a parish family.
For all that we have, I am grateful.
Have a great week! Madeleine
SAVE THE DATE Active Shooter Presentation
On Wednesday, September 19, 2018, there will be an Active Shooter Presentation from 7 PM to 9 PM in the Social and Recreation Center. This presentation is designed to prepare individuals in the event they are involved in an active shooter situation.
The Presentation will be discussing the different
mental strategies, as well as response tactics.
Individuals will be better prepared to not only ACT
but REACT during an active shooter event. The
discussion covers associated behaviors, thoughts,
and feelings, which may be indicators that someone
is disgruntled at their job, in their personal life, or
with society. Triggering events that may cause
individuals to become an active shooter are also
discussed. Active shooter statics, trends, real
incidents are discussed, along with why it is vitally
important for individuals to have a plan. Audio and
video clips will be utilized to get everyone into the
mindset of what may occur during an active shooter
situation, and try to realistically have them feel
involved.

Basilian Fathers Missions
One Family In Mission
The Priests of the Basilian Fathers Missions Latin America Apostolate live and
work year round with the poor and needy in the are-as we serve in order to assist them in their struggle for self-reliance and human dignity. With a focus on education, we commit ourselves to the works of hu-man development, social justice and peace.
The Basilian Fathers Missions, originally constitut-ed in 1899 to serve the needs of the Spanish speak-ing in South Texas, responded to the Papal call for missionaries in Latin America, and with the encour-agement of Miguel Dario Miranda y Gomez, Arch-bishop of Mexico City, established a mission area in Mexico in 1961. In 1987, we established a mission in Cali, Colombia, and now also serve the needs of the poor in Bogota and Medellin, Colombia.
At the request of local Bishops, we established mis-sions among the poor and needy we serve. Our works are tailored to the needs of each specific mis-sion area and include creating nutrition programs and access to food, clinics for medical care, educa-tion, training in arts, crafts and other skills, farming, animal husbandry, and others.
These activities are possible through God’s Will, the generosity of the Missionary Cooperative Plan and our benefactors.

Would you like to remember Saint Helena in your will?
Ask your attorney to include such words as these in your will: “I give, devise, or bequeath to Saint Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422, for its general purposes all, (or state a fraction or percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, whether real or personal.” OR “I give to Saint Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422 ($X..00) to be used for the general purposes of Saint Helena Parish.”
Do you tithe electronically? Thank you very much to your continuing support of our Parish! Please remember the importance of placing your empty envelope in the collection basket each weekend. Simply check the electronic donation box and write “empty” on the amount line. Mass attendance is recorded by our Parish and the only means we have of knowing how often parishioners come to Mass is through the use of envelopes. Should you ever be asked to be a sponsor for Confirmation or a godparent for Baptism, your eligibility is based on the fact that you are registered in a parish and are a practicing Catholic.
If you are considering electronic tithing, it is very simple. Check the “Parish Giving” link on our web-site www.sainthelena-centersquare.net to set up an account for regular contributions. You are able to set up any giving schedule that works for you.
PROTECTING CATHOLIC FAMILIES SINCE 1882
