165 Yellowstone employees test negative for COVID-19 in third round of surveillance tests; contractor on construction project tests positive outside the park Update on visitor statistics MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - For the third week in a row after conducting COVID-19 surveillance testing on Yellowstone employees, all tests came back negative. On June 10, health officials from Park County, Montana, tested 165 employees from the National Park Service and concession companies operating in the park. This brings the total number of employee tests completed in the past 17 days to 387. Moving forward, the park will continue to test employees in partnership with both Montana and Wyoming. As introduced in the park’s reopening plan, this surveillance testing will continue throughout the summer and target employees who are first responders and/or work directly with the public. More information about the surveillance testing effort is available in the park’s news release from June 4. Additionally, a contractor working on a construction project in the park has tested positive. The individual reported symptoms at the job site, was isolated, and tested outside of the park. The individual does not live in the park. Contact tracing is being conducted by health officials, who at this point have not identified any close contacts with park employees or visitors. This individual was not tested as part of the Yellowstone employee surveillance testing program. The individual’s privacy will be protected, and no further details will be provided. "This is why we have developed response protocols with our health experts and have required COVID-19 mitigation/response plans for all contractors," said Superintendent Cam Sholly. "The contractor took the appropriate actions by immediately isolating the employee, sending him for testing, and notifying health officials."

Biologists set to begin grizzly bear captures for research purposes in Yellowstone National Park Public reminded to heed warning signsBOZEMAN, MT - As part of ongoing efforts required under the Endangered Species Act to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the U.S. Geological Survey, in conjunction with the National Park Service, is working to inform the public that pre-baiting and scientific capture operations are once again about to begin within Yellowstone National Park. Biologists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) will begin field captures on June 27 and continue through August 28. Capture operations can include a variety of activities, but all areas where work is being conducted will have primary access points marked with warning signs. It is critical that all members of the public heed these signs. Monitoring of grizzly bear distribution and other activities are vital to ongoing recovery of grizzly bears in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. In order to attract bears, biologists use natural food sources such as fresh road-killed deer and elk. Potential capture sites are baited with these natural foods and if indications are that grizzly bears are in the area, culvert traps or foot snares will be used to capture the bears. Once captured, bears are handled in accordance with strict safety and animal care protocols developed by the IGBST. Whenever bear capture activities are being conducted for scientific purposes, the area around the site will be posted with bright warning signs to inform the public of the activities occurring. These signs are posted along the major access points to the capture site. It is important that the public heed these signs and do not venture into an area that has been posted. For more information regarding grizzly bear capture efforts, call the IGBST hotline at 406-994-6675. Information about the grizzly bear research and monitoring is available from the IGBST website: https://www.usgs.gov/science/interagency-grizzly-bear-study-team

Montanans should be prepared for encounters with bearsGrizzly bear populations continue to become denser and more widespread in Montana, increasing the likelihood that residents and recreationists will encounter them in new places each year.

That means being prepared for such encounters is more important than ever, both to keep people and property safe and to cultivate healthy bear behavior

In a recent example, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks became aware of a video depicting a bear in the Highwood Mountains, east of Great Falls. The bear was seen near the U.S. Forest Service boundary along Thain Creek. It’s possible the bear was a grizzly, which would make this an early sighting of grizzlies in this area. FWP cannot confirm the species of the bear based on the video footage, but it is investigating the sighting. Black bears are observed in this area regularly, and grizzly bears could also be present.

Grizzly bears in the lower 48 states are currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Management authority for grizzlies rests with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, working closely in Montana with FWP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, the Forest Service and Tribal lands. This collaboration happens through the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.

Several grizzly bear recovery areas exist in or near Montana, including the Selkirk, Cabinet-Yaak, Northern Continental Divide, Bitterroot and Greater Yellowstone ecosystems.

Grizzlies are expanding beyond these recovery zones and arriving in places where Montanans may not be used to seeing them. This signals progress in the recovery of the species, but it also creates new challenges for people who live, work and recreate in these areas. However, there are many steps people can take to reduce conflicts and negative encounters with grizzlies and black bears.

What you can doResidents can help by removing or securing potential bear attractants around their property. Bird feeders, pet food, garbage and other attractants should be stored securely. Bear-resistant garbage containers are available to residents in many areas. Chickens and other small livestock should be properly secured with electric fencing.

If a bear finds a human-related food source, it is likely to return to the same place to look for food and lose natural foraging behavior in the wild. Situations where bears become habituated to human-occupied places creates risks for people and property and may require problem bears to be relocated or destroyed.

Recreationists and people who work outdoors should always be prepared to handle a bear encounter. Most bear attacks on humans happen in surprise close encounters. Activities that are deliberately quiet or fast moving, such as hunting, mountain biking or trail running, put people at greater risk for surprising a bear. When you’re outside, keep these precautions in mind:

• Be aware of your surroundings and look for bear sign.• Read signs at trailheads and stay on trails. Be especially careful around creeks and in areas with dense brush.• Carry bear spray. Know how to use it and be prepared to deploy it at a second’s notice.• Travel in groups whenever possible and make casual noise, which can help alert bears to your presence.• Stay away from animal carcasses, which often attract bears.• Follow Forest Service food storage orders, which have been in effect for public lands in Montana since March 1.

If you encounter a bear, never approach it. Back away slowly and leave the area. For more information on avoiding negative encounters with bears, visit igbconline.org/bear-safety.
