Ominously Jesus meets immediate rejection by the Samaritans,

prophetically anticipating the rejection he will experience at the hands of his own people. The uncompromising response Jesus gives to his three would-be followers reflects his own unwavering determination to see his mission through to its completion. The message is clear: discipleship is costly and must be unconditional. We humans are so quick to find excuses or to put off what we should do. The Gospel is not meant to be harsh; Jesus is being very practical and insightful. To be Christian is a full time job.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

2016 Centenary Toowong Jesuits—Portrait of a Jesuit

Fr Desmond Purcell sjFr Desmond Purcell sjFr Desmond Purcell sjFr Desmond Purcell sj was Parish Priest from 1992— 1994. Fr Des had been a Missionary in

India until ill health forced him to return to Australia.

In 1993 the Parish celebrated the Centenary of the opening of the first Toowong Catholic

Church of St Michael and All Souls (9/4/93). Various celebrations were organised to mark the

occasion including historical display; souvenirs and commemorative plaques were installed on

the wall of St Ignatius Church at the Easter Vigil Mass which coincided with the Centenary.

While P.P. Fr Des commenced the Parish Master Plan, relocated the kitchen space in the Parish

Hall and also provision of a tea room in the Church and the refurbishing of the Reconciliation

Room.

Fr Des had a passion for liturgy and rejoiced in the changes of Vatican II.

Fr Des’ health suffered during his time in Toowong and it was necessary for him to have a time

of rest at the House of Writers in Canberra.
