Westside Daze 2014 offers ve days of funThose who aren’t thrilled about Canada Day falling on a Tuesday may rethink their position when they realize that means an extra day of Westside Daze this year.

Wade Patersonstaff reporter

West Kelowna’s annual party takes place from Fri-day, June 27 to Tuesday, July 1 at Memorial Park in West Kelowna.

“We needed to bridge over from Sunday to Tues-day, so we’re doing an ex-tra concert (on Monday) this year,” says Leah Thord-

arson, administrator of the Westside Celebration So-ciety.

“Next year will prob-ably be the same thing, be-cause…Canada Day falls on the Wednesday. So we’ll probably start with Canada Day and then go the other way.”

Thordarson says residents and visitors have a lot to look forward to this time around.

The of cial opening ceremony takes place Fri-day, June 27, at 7 p.m. West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater, Westside-Ke-lowna MLA and Premier Christy Clark and Oka-nagan-Coquihalla MP Dan Albas will give greet-ings before bluegrass band Kettle Valley Brakemen

take the stage to kick off the evening’s entertainment.

Make Me Smile, the ul-timate Chicago Tribute, will play from 8 to 10 p.m. and Kinshira Fire Troupe will end the evening with their

re performance around 10 p.m., just after the sun has gone down.

“It’s an amazing start; I’m so excited about it,” says Thordarson.

No wonder everybody

loves a parade: the annual

“It will be a really good evening.”

The excitement con-tinues Saturday with one of the Okanagan’s most popu-lar annual parades at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The parade starts at Butt Road and Old Okanagan Highway, turns

west at Drought Road and north at Brown Road.

The final section of the parade, known as the Get Wet Zone, is on Brown Road, between Bering and Butt Roads.

“All the other commun-ities used to do it. They’ve all nixed it. But we’re very distinct.

“People from the side-lines and people from the parade can (spray) each

other…it’s crazy. People come down with buckets and super soakers.”

Jack Hetherington and Christine Harper—better known as Captain and Mrs. Canada—have been named the 2014 Westside Daze pa-rade marshals. The patriot-ic couple gained popular-ity during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancou-ver, where they took count-less photos with mem-bers of the public, and were interviewed by press from around the world.

The Bishop Gran-din Marching Ghosts, a 100-piece marching band, will also be part of this year’s parade.

The Kids’ Fair is an-other Saturday staple, with free activities for children of all ages from 12:15 to 4 p.m. During that time, the Youth Talent Competition will take place on the main stage. There will also be a dog agility demonstration: A first for Westside Daze.

Rant and Rave, Tina Turner Tribute staring Lui-sa Marshall and The Luisa Marshall Cover Show Band will provide evening enter-tainment Saturday.

Just before the sun goes down, the excitement shifts to Gellatly Bay as a For-mula 1 tunnel boat demon-stration takes place from 9 to 9:25 p.m. before the fire-works show on the lake concludes the evening at 10:15 p.m.

Gellatly Road, from ap-proximately Witt Road to Angus Drive, will likely still be closed due to con-struction; however, Thord-arson says the detour along Witt and Carrall Roads isn’t too bad.

“You have to go down a couple residential streets and be a little quieter…(but) it’s not that bad of a detour.”

Festivities kick-off at 8 a.m. Sunday with a West-side Daze fundraising breakfast until 11 a.m. A community gospel cele-bration will also take place Sunday morning, featuring Don Richmond and Barb Samuels.

Sukanaqin Sxelxalt—or, Okanagan Day—runs from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The celebration of First Nations heritage and people will include on-stage enter-tainment, as well as sever-al activities and demonstra-tions at the tepee village.

Magician Leif David will take the stage at 7 p.m. Sunday for a fun-filled magic show before Marty Edwards and The Revival perform music from the 60s

and 70s from 8 to 10 p.m.Since it is a work day,

there are less activities hap-pening Monday; however, West Coast Amuse-ments will open at noon and two per-formers will take the stage in the evening.

James Elser will perform at 7 p.m. before Elvis, Roy Orbison, Tom Jones and Neil Diamond tribute bands take over the stage at 8 p.m.

Westside Daze wraps up on Canada Day.

The final day will feature a fundraising breakfast at 8 a.m., a car, motorcycle and truck show and shine from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and day-time performances by The Malarkeys,

Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts and The Regals.

The Canada Day cake will be brought out at 3

p.m., just before closing ceremonies at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be totally amazing,” says Thordarson.

The core group of vol-unteers will meet later this summer for a barbecue, dis-cuss what worked and what didn’t, then begin planning for 2015.

The Westside Celebra-tion Society is the team that makes Westside Daze pos-sible, and free of charge, every year.

Leah Thordarson, ad-ministrator of the society, says the team of about 15 work tirelessly to put on West Kelowna’s festival every year.

“People are constant-ly thinking about it year-round, and then coming to the meetings with ideas,” says Thordarson.

“It’s very much a team effort; everybody knows what everybody is doing.”

As the group tries to make Westside Daze big-ger and better each year, Thordarson says there is an increasing need for each member of the Westside Celebration Society to have additional volunteer assist-ance.

“I’d love to see the Kids’ Fair lady have her own team, and the car show guy have his own team.

“That’s the next step, to actually get people to work underneath the chair (volun-teers).”

Above and beyond the core group of volunteers are the hundreds of volunteers who help out with various tasks and events during the actual Westside Daze cele-bration.

Thordarson has been in-volved with Westside Daze

since 2002. She says she keeps coming back because she knows the event is one the community loves.

“I often say, ‘Where else can you put a party on for about 28,000 people?’

“You listen to the music, you see people tapping their toes and they’re smiling…I get such a joy out of seeing people down on the eld.”

Carl Bertholm has been volunteering with the West-side Celebration Society for nine years. His job is mak-ing sure the parade runs

VVVVolunteersThey’re the lifeblood of Westside Daze…

After the Westside Daze closing ceremony has wrapped up and visitors have left Memorial Park, those responsible for putting

on West Kelowna’s biggest festival will still be on site, helping clean up.

smoothly.“I’ve never been late

for a parade start yet,” says Bertholm.

Bertholm’s role has evolved since he rst began helping out with Westside Daze.

The rst year, he says, he was told to “line every-body up in a nice neat row, then at 10:30 a.m., tell them to leave.”

“That was it; there was no organizing…you could’ve had three bands in a row,” says Bertholm.

“Over the years it has evolved…it’s down to a system now.”

He and the rest of the core Westside Daze vol-unteers typically get busy with planning in January, he says.

“As it gets into the last month, we meet every week.”

Each volunteer organizer keeps the others up-to-date at meetings on how plan-ning is coming along.

On the day of the pa-rade, Bertholm says ap-proximately 25 extra vol-unteers will be helping out to make sure the event runs without a hitch.

Although next year may be Bertholm’s last for vol-unteering with the West-side Celebration Society, he doesn’t regret his decade of service.

“There’s a satisfaction.“A lot of people get en-

joyment out of watching all the excitement that people have who are in the pa-rade.”

For Pamela Barnes, educating others on First Nations history is not only important: It’s a responsibility.

Wade Patersonstaff reporter

“It was passed on to me, (so) I have a responsibility to make sure that there are those who will come after me and carry these things on,” says Barnes.

“It’s part of who we are. If you come from a family of storytellers, that’s some-thing that’s meant to be taught and passed on gener-

ation after generation.”Sukanaqin Sxelxalt—or,

Okanagan Day—is an an-nual Westside Daze event organized and funded by Westbank First Nation.

This year it runs from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Barnes says the event allows West-bank First Nation members to show-case their history and culture in a fun setting.

“I think it’s really important that we do that (for) the public; not enough of that goes on.

“And then, from more of an internal perspective, it’s teaching our successor gen-erations to…take over do-ing this kind of work.”

This year organizers have teamed up with West-bank First Nation’s new heritage museum to help with the education process.

“When we met with chief and council this year…I made a very strong pitch that (the museum) should be there and really be involved.”

Like many of the events offered during Westside Daze, it takes a lot of work to plan and set up Oka-nagan Day.

For example, those who take in the Saturday even-ing Westside Daze festiv-ities my see several volun-teers setting up the tepee village for Okanagan Day celebrations Sunday.

“We’ll start (setting up) the evening before…that’s open to the public,” says Barnes.

“We always seem to have some people who come out and watch—and sometimes even help.”

The tepee village will consist of several canvas te-pees, as well as traditional

lean-to shelters with woven cattail mats, which Barnes says are traditional to the Okanagan.

Another challenge is making Okanagan Day unique every year, and in-teresting for those who may have attended in the past.

“We try to do a variety of entertainment and we try not to have it be exactly the same as it was the previ-ous year.

“We also try to do a mix of traditional and contem-porary.”

During Okanagan Day there will be demonstra-tions on traditional shing, arrowheads, hemp rope, stick game and pictographs.

High Mountain Drum Group from Merritt will provide entertainment. There will also be Oka-nagan storytelling, a hoop dancer and other perform-ers.

According to advertise-ments placed in old Cap-ital News Westside Daze special sections by former Westside-Kelowna MLA Ben Stewart, 2014 should be the 39th annual celebra-tion.

Leah Thordarson, ad-ministrator of Westside Celebration Society, says that guess is probably as

good as any.“When I was with the

chamber, as the executive director, all the (Westside Daze) archives were stored in the chamber basement,” says Thordarson.

Years ago, a toilet lo-cated in the visitor’s wash-room of the chamber of commerce building broke, causing ooding in the

building.“It must have leaked all

weekend and there was no drain in the basement.

“We had like three feet of water in the basement. All the archives got lost and completely destroyed.”

The story Thordarson was told is that Westside Daze was started by the lo-cal Kinsmen club. She says they wanted an add-on to their annual ball tourna-ment.

“They threw in a parade, they threw in some kids’ activities and…a few other little things.”

She says that went on for some time, before the club decided to skip out on the additional activities and focus on the ball tourna-ment.

Various other service clubs, such as the West-bank Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce, took on the task of organiz-ing the community event in the following years; how-ever, there were a few years when nobody was able to put on Westside Daze.

Peter Wannop of the Kinsmen Club of Westbank agrees the local Kinsmen

club started Westside Daze, and assumes that probably began in the mid-1970s.

“There was no Westside Daze in 1980, so in 1981 we took it back on—ran the parade,” says Wannop.

“It was quite a project for our club to try to handle the whole thing. Then, I be-lieve, in 1982 there was a Westside Daze committee struck which took it back over again.”

Westbank Museum vice president Poppy Angus says she’s unclear on the history of West Kelowna’s annual celebration.

“I have no info on the history of Westside Daze…which is too bad,” says An-gus.

Although the Westbank Museum was established in 1978, no records or archiv-al information on Westside Daze was ever provided, she adds.

Regardless of how—or when—it was started, the community event has grown signi cantly over the past 12 years.

“I came on board in 2002. The year before it was a one-day event. In 2002 it wasn’t much big-

ger,” says Thordarson.“(But) we were able to

start building it up.”Perhaps Westside Daze’s

biggest upgrade has been the quality of entertain-ment.

Thordarson says the group introduced outdoor concerts about six years ago and this year there are sev-

eral performers on the main stage during each of the ve days of the festival.

She adds the Westside Celebration Society con-tinues to look for ways to make the event bigger and better every year.

“You do everything you can to entice people to have a good time.”

No matter when it started or by who, Westside Daze has a rich history of entertaining families and its continued success promises an even brighter future.

would like to wish the community a fun- lled Canada Day Weekend.

See you at the parade!

As Mayor of West Kelowna, Doug Findlater is often asked to take part in the Westside Daze festivities.

But even before he was mayor, it was rare Findlater would miss the annual cele-bration.

“There’s always some-

thing very interesting to be involved in.”

While Westside Daze is up-and-running, Findlater says it is the “centrepiece of the community.”

“It’s the one thing where you can count on just about everybody getting out for some part of it,” says Find-later.

It’s hard for the mayor to choose his favourite part of the festivities.

“The long parade…it’s certainly well over an hour

long and it’s quite spectacu-lar.

“(There are) some pretty decent reworks and enter-tainment at Memorial eld as well.”

Findlater says keys to Westside Daze’s success have been keeping the event affordable and prohibiting alcohol.

“There are two features that are unusual (and) very attractive for families.

“It’s free…and it’s alco-hol free as well. That’s part of the magic recipe.”

The District of West Kelowna gave the West-side Celebration Society $18,000 this year through its Grants in Aid process.

District staff members

also help with the set-up of Westside Daze and work to make sure the Memorial Park eld is ready to go in time for the celebration.

Findlater says the money and staff assistance are worth it as the commun-ity bene ts from the annual event.

“This is a growing fes-tival. We’re seeing more and more public participa-tion.

“The quality of the en-tertainment at the bowl at the end of Memorial (Park) eld is continuously improving.

“If we’re going to have a modest role in festivals and culture, this is the place for West Kelowna to do it.”

Mayor Doug Findlater attributes part of the ongoing success of Westside Daze to the free factor: It’s

free to attend and alcohol-free as well.
