ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT, THE SCOTIABANK CANADIAN OPEN FASTPITCH INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IS A BIGGER EVENT IN 2012 THAN IT WAS A YEAR AGO.

What was one women’s tournament last year is now two. An extra day of competition means there will be 10 days of elite women’s softball June 30 to July 9.

And 10 national teams will be participating throughout the week at Surrey’s Softball City, double the total of a year ago.

Like last year, there are both International and Elite divisions in the women’s category. But unlike 2011, they are now two different tournaments.

Five national teams were in the International group last July, and all fi ve were guaranteed a berth in the eight double-knockout playoff at week’s end. After round robin play in the Elite division, the top three of eight teams moved up to the International playoff to complete the fi eld.

This year, the International and Elite groups will remain separate, each having its own playoff to determine a champion.

Seven national teams are in the International tournament, including four of the top fi ve from the most recent ISF (International Softball Federation) World Championship tournament in the International category.

The two co-favourites are Japan and the United States. The Americans are the currently ranked fi rst in the world by the ISF, due to their win in the most recent World Championship Tournament. However, that was back in 2010.

Since then, Japan became the defending Canadian Open champion. They knocked off the United States twice on the fi nal day of play, edging their rivals 4-3 in a semifi nal playoff contest to advance to the fi nal.

The USA. thumped Australia 6-1 in a backdoor game to earn a rematch with the Japan, but couldn’t keep pace. Japan stunned both the Americans and spectators, scoring six times in the fi rst two innings in a 7-0 victory.

”I’ve never seen Japan come out like that in my entire life, and I’ve been coaching in this program for 14 years,” said USA head coach Ken Eriksen after the game.

Canada, currently ranked third in the world, will be looking for home fi eld

advantage to help improve on its fourth place fi nish of a year ago. Australia, always a powerhouse when at Softball City, an improving team representing Venezuela, Puerto Rico and New Zealand will also compete.

Five days of round robin play will take place July 4 -8, followed by two semifi nal games the evening of July 8. The championship game is set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 9. It will be fi rst time the tournament will end on a Monday.

The Elite tournament includes three

national teams which are still building their programs in order to compete with the world’s softball powers – Mexico, Peru and Great Britain.

They will be in an eight-team group that also includes the host White Rock Renegades, Team B.C., China’s Liaoning club, Jakarta of Indonesia, the California A’s and the St. Louis Extreme Elite.

After a single round-robin June 30 to July 5, a double round robin playoff will determine a playoff July 6-8.

IT’S NOT EASY EARNING AN INVITATION to try out for Canada’s national women’s softball team.

It’s even more diffi cult to survive the four-week selection process and be named to Team Canada and play for our country at an ISF (International Softball Federation) World Championship event.

The Scotiabank Canadian Open International Fastpitch Championship plays a key role in that process, serving as the last tournament to be played before the fi nal team is named to compete at the July 13-22 World Championship in Whitehorse.

The process begins by being identifi ed as a prospective national team member, and listed in the athlete pool from which a national team is selected. To be listed, players must catch the eye of the Softball Canada national team coaching staff.

“The coaching staff will scout athletes at a variety of events including Canadian

championships, Canada Summer Games and walk-on evaluations,” explains Softball Canada on its website. “This scouting information is then used to create an athlete pool. From the athlete pool, athletes are invited to a selection camp where the fi nal team is selected.”

There were 44 players named to the selection pool in January, but the next step in the process didn’t take place for another six months.

Twenty-six athletes were invited an eight-day selection camp in Oklahoma City, June 13-22. Following the camp, an “initial list” of athletes will be selected to form a team for the U.S. World Cup in the same city June 28 to July 2.

“It is understood that in making selections to create the best possible team,” explains Softball Canada. “It is possible that the best individual athletes may not be selected.”

The group then moves on to the Canadian Open July 4-9 at Surrey’s Softball City.

A day later, on July 10, the team that will represent Canada in Whitehorse July 13-22.

Lengthy process decides who makes Team Canada

FOUR LOCAL PLAYERS were among the 26 at the Team Canada selection camp last week in Oklahoma city, vying for a place with the national team for the July 13-22 World Championship tournament in Whitehorse.

An invite would also lead to a trip to Softball City for the June 30 to July 9 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, and a chance to play against the world’s best in front of friends and family.

JOCELYN CATER NORTH DELTA Cater made her debut with the senior national team at last year’s Canadian Open - at the age of 16.

Committed to Seattle’s University of Washington for the fall, the former Maple Ridge resident and recent graduate of Seaquam Secondary School in North Delta, Cater helped Canada earn a Silver Medal at the Pan Am Games in Mexico last October.

JENN YEE NORTH DELTA One of the longest-serving members of Team Canada, Yee earned a degree from Georgia Tech University in Materials

Science and Engineering while on a softball scholarship. She was one of three finalists for the NCAA Player of the Year award in 2010, two years after playing for Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

MELANIE MATTHEWS SURREYOne of the most consistent players from Team Canada, Matthews is a graduate of Simon Fraser University, where she helped lead the Clan to a NAIA national championship in 2004. She was a teammate of Yee’s on the Olympic team in Beijing in 2008.

KELSEY BRYANT SURREYTrying for a position at either shortstop or first base, Bryant recently finished her first season playing the infield for the University of Southern Utah. COME ON DOWN TO Sandcastle Lanes…

A TSAWWASSEN TEEN will get a chance to pit her fastpitch skills against some of the world’s top talent next month.

Marnie-Lynne (ML) Schneider, 16, is the only South Delta resident on the Delta Heat ‘95 team at the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship June 30 to July 9.

This will be the fi rst time the South Delta Secondary School student has played in an international softball tournament. She says she has confi dence in her team, which will be battling for top spot in the Futures Gold championship. The division consists of 28 elite-level youth teams from fi ve countries.

“I think we are a pretty good team, I think we defi nitely stand a good chance, but I guess we’ll just have to see,” says Schneider, a shortstop and second baseman. “Some of the teams are coming from so far away, you’ve just got no idea what you’re dealing with.”

The California Worth Firecrackers will return to Surrey to defend their Scotiabank Canadian Open International Fastpitch Championship title.

The Firecrackers won all 10 round robin and playoff contests a year ago, clinching the championship in the under-19 elite category. After falling behind 5-0 to the Canadian Junior national team, California rallied for an 8-7 victory in the fi nal, scoring the tying and winning runs with a pair of two-out singles.

The fi eld includes junior national teams from South American nations Brazil, Venezuela and Ecuador.

The Worth Firecrackers are one of eight elite U.S. club teams. Two club teams each from Alberta and Saskatchewan, Team Ontario and a dozen entries from B.C. complete the fi eld.

Local teams include the ‘94 and ‘95 teams from the Richmond Islanders and White Rock Renegades programs, the Surrey Storm ‘95 and the South Surrey Thunder ’95.

Although this is Schneider’s fi rst time playing in the fastpitch tournament, she has been an enthusiastic audience member at the women’s games in past years.

“And if the youth teams can play like the women’s teams then I’m a little bit frightened,” she says, noting the high calibre of play.

The following are excepts taken from a review written by Tracey Tufnail that appeared in the Vancouver Sun…

“The fondue was outstanding and exactly the sort of dish I do not share willingly… don’t miss this dish.”

“The New York Strip was served medium rare with a blackened pepper crust of just the right weight and seasoned with soy, garlic and rock salt. The steak was both tasty and tender.”

“With its small plates hefty enough to feed more than one – Share has the friendly, tapas-style, affordable neighbourhood eatery concept down pat.”

SCHNEIDER’S ATHLETIC ABILITY EXTENDS FROM THE SOFTBALL DIAMOND TO THE SOCCER PITCH. She is a winger with the Ladner Threat under-18 squad – a team whose accomplishments she says she’s particularly proud of.

Soccer coach Raj Uppal commented on Schneider’s ability to maintain a “never say die attitude” while playing within the rules of the game.

“In the years that I’ve coached ML in rep soccer I can honestly say she is an extremely versitaile player, having played all positions on the fi eld for us, as well as being as tough as nails and a pleasure to coach,” he said.

Schneider says having very understanding coaches helps her balance sports with her other priorities – like school, friends and art.

She still has one more year of high school and says she’d like to attend Emily Carr University of Art and Design after graduation.

“I love working with pencil,” she says. “But I also enjoy painting and working with any other medium.”

Despite her athletic, academic and artistic accomplishments, Schneider is kept modest by the people around her.

“There are lots of really talented people at my school. It’s kind of humbling, but at the same time it’s more motivation to just keep getting better at what you do.”

- with fi les from Rick Kupchuk

A gem for Canadaby Grant Granger BURNABY NEWS LEADER

THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE DREAM SUMMER OF KELSEY HABERL’S YOUNG LIFE.

Growing up in Burnaby, she had Olympic dreams and worked hard to become one of the best young fi rst basemen in Canadian women’s softball. In 2012 she was going to be 22, so the timing seemed right to play for her country at the Summer Olympic Games in London.

But a few years ago, that dream was dashed when the International Olympic Committee decided to dump the sport from the 2012 and 2016 Games.

So instead of a fortnight in one of the globe’s greatest cities playing before world-wide audiences, Haberl is scheduled to spend a couple of weeks at the world championship in, ahem, Whitehorse.

“That was heartbreaking because 2012 would have been the perfect year for me,” says Haberl, who went to Seaforth elementary and Burnaby Mountain secondary. “The Olympics is something I always dreamed about, to be in the Olympics in any sport. It kind of sucks they decided to take it out of the Olympics. Most of us have realized or come to terms that it’s not going to be for us, but we want to get it back [in the Olympics] for the younger kids.”

Haberl started T-ball when she was about six, and played baseball with the boys until she was in Grade 5 before sticking with softball, a game she took up in Grade 4. The lefthander went on to play for the Burnaby Oakeys and the Surrey Storm.

“I loved the team aspect of it,” she says. “It’s individual in so many senses. I hate that it’s about failure, but I love that it’s about failure. There’s always room to improve. I just love the game.”

During high school, Haberl began to attract attention from college programs. She had plenty of options, but the best one turned out to be just a short drive up the hill. Playing for Simon Fraser University had two advantages. First of all, the women’s softball program run by head coach Mike Renney had always been an elite one in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Second, she could continue to sleep in her own bed at home instead of a tiny dorm room.

“There’s always the thought of what you could be missing, or moving away and being on my own. But I’ve never regretted not leaving because it worked out well for me,” says Haberl. “It was a safe decision, but it worked out well.”

Did it ever. Her four years at SFU were eventful.

They included the school’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

“You really noticed the difference in the level of play. It’s great to say you

can play in the NCAA,” says Haberl. She just completed her senior

campaign, in which she led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) in batting average (.465), on base percentage (.496) and walks (38). She committed just two errors all season, giving her a .995 fi elding percentage. With those super stats it’s no wonder she was named GNAC player of the year. “That was cool. I was surprised by that.”

With her collegiate career complete, Haberl has thought about playing in professional leagues either in the U.S. or Europe, but her fi rst priority is to complete her geography degree with the hope of getting a teaching certifi cate.

In Grade 10, Haberl tried out for the junior national team for the fi rst time, making it to the fi nal round before being cut. But in her freshman season at SFU, “I was in the right place at the right time” and was named to the national team.

Haberl calls playing for Canada “amazing.”

“That’s why I drive to be on the team every season. Every year I get nervous for tryouts.”

Surprisingly enough, she’s “very nervous” about this year’s tryouts that begin today (Friday) in Oklahoma City even though she was named to the 2011 Canadian Open all-star team, the only Canadian to do so. Her apprehension has its roots in making the team in 2009 but being cut in 2010.

“I’m very nervous. You just never know,” she says. “You’ve always got to be able to perform. The pressure’s always there to perform, even though it’s not in a competition.”

Last October, she got a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico when Canada lost the fi nal to the United States. “That was an awesome experience.”

After the tryouts, Canada will participate in the World Cup in Oklahoma before returning to the Lower Mainland for the Canadian Open, formerly known as the Canada Cup, in South Surrey. It’s a tournament Haberl grew up with. At fi rst she went to watch and learn before participating in the showcase (under-16) and futures (under-19) divisions and then playing for Canada in the international elite division.

“It’s the best tournament of the season. Everyone you know is there. Everyone I played against or with is there. I love that tournament,” she says. “You live and breathe softball for a week.”

BOAZ JOSEPH / BLACK PRESS

Kelsey Haberl admits to being nervous during tryouts for Team Canada. She hopes to play for her country at Softball City, in what she calls “the best tournament of the season.”

... “It’s individual in so many senses.

I hate that it’s about failure, but I love

that it’s about failure. There’s always

room to improve. I just love the game.” ...
