Today’s readings focus on people from all walks of life reaching out to help others. The Catholic Com-munity of Northbrook has reached out in so many ways: donating, collecting and delivering food to the food pantries; writing letters to lonely, hospital-ized patients; placing encouraging signs near the hospital, police and fire stations; volunteering to assist parishioners who attend Mass and sanitizing the church afterwards; assisting parishioners be-fore, during and after private prayer, Adoration and reconciliation; conducting zoom Scripture stud-ies, and so many other unknown charitable outreach activities. Our Priests have celebrated Mass daily which is streamed to our own computers, and have ministered to those who are homebound, sick or near eternal life. Father Chris brought rosaries and the love from all of us for the patients and healthcare workers at Glenbrook Hospital. The Ministers of Care, since early March , have not been able to personally minister to or bring Com-munion to parishioners in hospitals, nursing homes, senior residences or the homebound. We do not know when we will be able to resume this ministry. The safety of the ministers and those they would visit are of upmost concern. However, the ministers are phoning our forty-plus home-bound parishioners regularly: daily, twice a week or weekly, to share stories, challenges and con-cerns, to laugh and cry together, to pray and to recite the Spiritual Communion. Oh, how they miss receiving Jesus in Holy Communion! This Sacrament blesses them with strength, hope, wisdom, peace and perseverance. Ministers have also assisted our homebound parishioners in making im-portant calls, getting their phones working again, making meals, encouraging them to contact our churches’ outreach program to shop for and deliver groceries and prescriptions, to alert them to the current scams and leaving copies of the church bulletin and prayers in their mailboxes. In one of the Northbrook independent living residences, a Minister of Care organized having the Sunday and Wednesday Masses, a prayer service and recitation of the Rosary, plus educational programs streamed into their individual TV’s. The ministers have also notified the Priests of those who are cel-ebrating special anniversaries, birthdays, or requesting Anointing of the Sick. Being isolated at home alone, over 65 and having health issues with no family close by is a chal-lenge. These people have lived through many other crises, are strong, wise and patient, but this pandemic has caused additional stress. Lack of a support system, not knowing if their friends are alive or not, inability to shop, or get to regular doctor or dental appointments, not seeing neighbors outside, not being able to take short walks or visit with others passing by, not being able to see or hug their beloved grandchildren are all difficult. Loneliness is so prevalent and harmful. For various reasons, many do not have computers, so they are unable to communicate via zoom, skype or Face-book and are unaware of all the changes in their beloved church that have occurred. They can be overwhelmed with the TV news reports of illnesses and death. They ARE survivors but need our support and assistance to make their days a little brighter, a little easier and more positive. We know that at any given time, 10% of our church’s membership is homebound for one reason or an-other; but we are unaware of many of these dear people. If you know of anyone, regardless of age, who could benefit from our outreach services please call or have them call the parish office. If they would like to receive regular phone calls from our ministers of care, please let me know at [email protected]. We will do our best to accompany these wonderful, dear people during this pandemic and beyond. Peace, Mona Lukas Matt 10:42 And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple-amen I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.

Sharing Ministry The Sharing Ministry is grateful for the generous response to requests for condiments and other pic-nic-related items. Many families hope to gather in safe outdoor spaces over the summer. There is also a need for personal hygiene items—shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soaps, body washes, lotions, disposable razors, shaving cream, etc. Hand sani-tizers and disinfecting wipes are still hard to find, but if you have enough to share, please keep Catholic Charities and the Northfield Food Pantry in mind. They are more than ever relying on the donations from our Sharing Min-istry.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

RCIA Candidates On June 28, we will (finally!) complete the process of receiving our RCIA Candidates into full communion with our parish community. They have been very patient, waiting for this day. Please pray for them! Nate Schnittman is a long time Northbrook Resident, and lives close enough to the Church to hear our bells, which he remembers hearing as a teen. In some way, they pulled him to us, to fully explore his relationship with God. Nate is in early childhood ed-ucation, and is JUST getting to go back to work, which makes him VERY happy. Adam Prickett has been attending Mass with his wife and family at our Parish, and felt the pull to become Catholic so he could enjoy the liturgy with them in the full embrace of the Church. Adam is an Ophthal-mologist in private practice in the area. Henry Song felt the need to complete his exploration of Catholicism after the death of his mother. Her courage thru faith as she passed away inspired his desire to join us. Henry works in the family business in Highwood, and lives in Glenview. Jim and Penny Covert split time between Florida and the area. The parents of three children, they have long served in executive positions in the health care industry and in various charitable organiza-tions. Jim started his career as a Chicago Bear and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Jan-uary of 2020.

We’ll miss you, Fr. Dan! His new mailing address: 750 W. Elk Grove Blvd, Elk Grove Village, IL 60007

Thanks, Fr. Dan!

BLESSINGS TO FR. DAN FOLWACZNY!!! The Vine Youth Ministry would like to thank Fr. Dan for all he has done to strengthen the faith of our teens! Throughout the years he has joined TVYM for so many events while sharing God’s unconditional love and compassion. We are grateful and feel blessed that his first assignment as a Priest was here at St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish; and our prayers go out to him as he transitions to being the Pastor at St. Julian Eymard and Queen of the Rosary, two parishes in Elk Grove Village that are merging. Fr. Dan, may God bless you in your new assignment as he has blessed us with your presence in TVYM!!!

“And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple — amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

Help Is Available

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK [8255]) is a US-based suicide prevention network of 161 crisis centers that provides a 24/7, hotline availa-ble to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) is a non-denominational program that supports individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved one by suicide. LOSS of-fers a safe, non-judgmental environment where survivors of suicide can openly talk about feelings and experiences. We help survivors to find community, direction and re-sources for healing. How we Help: We provide a warm, nurturing network of other survivors. We educate members about the grieving process. We support your unique struggle to regain hope and strength. Domestic Violence Awareness

While social distancing is best practice, home is not a safe place for victims of domestic violence. Tensions about reduced work hours, closings and illness can make any-one feel powerless. Abusers have increased access to victims as survivors can no longer go to work or visit friends. Victims might fear obtaining medical treatment or seeking refuge with elderly parents. Although it is hard to predict the lasting impact of this epidemic, it is clear that WINGS services to our commu-nity are critically needed now. In these uncertain times, we are so grateful for your support and understanding. We are so grateful for partners like Our Lady of the Brook/St. Norbert.”

SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713-1784) July 1

No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether dif-ferent but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comforta-ble academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retro-spectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to ad-vance their true human development. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S.
