DIVINE CANNIBALISM?

On Friday October 13, 1972, a plane from Uruguay, carrying 45 passengers to Chile, crashed in the Andes. Many of them were students and players in a rugby team. After being isolated from everything for 72 days, on December 22, 1972, the world found out that sixteen of them had died. The others had survived by eating the flesh of the dead comrades. A shocking situation but necessary for survival. In their declarations, they stated that with all due respect to their dead comrades, they did so by way of Eucharistic Communion in which Christ invites us to eat his body. When Jesus says to the Jews that those who eat His flesh and drink His blood has eternal life, I'm sure they were shocked and thought that He was inviting them to a horrendous act of cannibalism, yet in fact, when we receive the Communion is not a symbolic representation of the Body and Blood of Jesus. There is no need for hosts, or laboratory tests to believe in this divine event, but rather faith. It is said that we are what we eat. That is, that if we eat junk food, we will not be as healthy as if we eat nutritious food. The truth is that we obtain vitamins, proteins and nutrients from the food we eat. Hopefully when we consume the body and blood of Christ, we will come to say, as Saint Paul says: ¨It is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me¨. In Jewish tradition, drinking from the same cup, means accepting to share the same fate, to seal a commitment with who your drink with. That's why in Jewish weddings the bride and groom devote themselves to drink from the same cup, which they later break, meaning they have made a pact that no one else will intervene. Communion with Christ means accepting his own destiny, to live his own way, to love as He loves and be willing to die with Him, in order to resurrect with Him. To accept to be One with Him, to be part of His Mystical Body which is the Church, in which there are many members with different functions, but we accept to live in the unity of his love.

¿CANIBALISMO DIVINO?

El viernes 13 de Octubre de 1972 un avión uruguayo, que llevaba 45 pasajeros a Chile, de los c u a l e s m u c h o s e r a n estudiantes y jugadores de un equipo de rugby, se estrelló en

la Cordillera de los Andes. El 22 de diciembre de 1972, después de haber estado durante 72 días aislados de todo, el mundo se entera que dieciséis vencieron a la muerte teniendo que comer la carne de los compañeros fallecidos en el accidente. Situación impactante pero necesaria para sobrevivir. En sus declaraciones, dijeron que con todo respeto a sus compañeros difuntos lo hicieron a manera de la Comunión Eucarística en la que Cristo nos invita a comer su cuerpo para tener vida. Cuando Jesucristo declara ante los Judíos que el que come su carne y bebe su sangre tendrá vida eternal, estoy seguro que se escandalizaron pensando que los estaba invitando a un horrendo acto de canibalismo y sin embargo, efectivamente, al comulgar comemos su cuerpo y bebemos su sangre, no una representación simbólica de ello. No necesitamos hostias sangrantes, ni pruebas de laboratorio para creer en este acontecimiento divino, sino la fe. Se dice que somos lo que comemos. Es decir, que si comemos comida chatarra, no estaremos tan saludables como si comemos comida nutritiva. Lo cierto es que asumimos las vitaminas, proteínas y los nutrientes de los alimentos que consumimos que pasan a ser parte de nuestro organismo. Ojalá que al consumir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, lleguemos a decir como San Pablo: ¨Ya no soy yo el que vive , sino Cristo que vive en mi¨. En la tradición Judía, beber de una misma copa, significa aceptar el compartir el mismo destino, sellar un compromiso con quien se bebe. Es por eso que las bodas judías se consagran al beber los novios de la misma copa que luego la rompen, significando que han sellado un pacto y que nadie más ha de intervenir para su cumplimiento. Comulgar con Cristo, significa aceptar su propio destino, vivir a su manera, amar como El ama y estar dispuesto a morir con El, para poder resucitar con El. Aceptar ser Uno con El, ser parte de su Cuerpo Místico que es la Iglesia, en la cual, hay muchos miembros con funciones diferentes, pero que aceptamos vivir en la unidad de su amor.

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ -

My Dear People of God, On the first weekend of the month of June, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We begin the month by focusing on the summit of our Catholic Faith, the Holy Eucharist. The entire month of June can be a great time for all of us to strengthen our relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist. The month can provide a great opportunity for us to grow and form a greater appreciation of the Eucharistic celebration of the Mass. Approaching the Eucharist with a renewed sense of awe and reverence can move us to better participate in the celebration of the Mass. The month of June can provide the opportunity for ongoing faith formation in the way of the Liturgy of the Eucharist for the young and old alike. The Mass is where evangelization takes place. It is where we experience “the encounter.” It is the Risen Jesus, in the proclamation of his holy Gospel and the spiritual nourishment of his presence in Holy Communion, that we encounter at every liturgy. It is an encounter that provides the grace and mercy capable of changing hearts. The Mass offers us an opportunity to express our openness and desire to grow in holiness and to respond to the call of “ongoing” conversion of mind and heart. It is this desire that will empower us to be the faith community we are called to be, here, in Diocese of Stockton. It is this “call to holiness” that Pope Francis addresses in his recent apostolic exhortation: “Rejoice and Be Glad.” He states: “For every Christian, our mission on earth is to discover our path to holiness. Seeking God’s will for us, discerning his call and responding to it with an open and generous heart is how we attain holiness.” My friends, the more we appreciate and permit the gift of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to transform us, the more we will find ourselves prepared to be sent at the end of every Mass to “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life!” The evangelizing power of the Mass will empower us to live our faith, and to witness to it, “out there!” This witnessing of the Faith, must first begin at home, then, it is to be taken out into the “marketplace” of our hurting society. May this month, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, grace us as we grow in our love of his True Presence in the Eucharist. May the Sacred-Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, pierced and glorified for each and every one of us, be our strength and consolation. May your summer be one in which you spend time to relax and find refreshment and renewal in the Presence of the Lord. Reflect, Relax, and “Rejoice and be Glad!” Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

UN MENSAJE DE NUESTRO OBISPO MYRON J. COTTA

El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.-

Mi Querida Gente de Dios, En el primer fin de semana del mes de Junio, celebramos la Solemnidad del Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Empezamos el mes enfocando en la cima de nuestra fe Católica, la Santa Eucaristía. El mes de Junio puede ser un buen tiempo para todos nosotros para fortalecer nuestra relación con Jesus en la Eucaristía. El mes puede proporcionar una gran oportunidad para

nosotros a crecer y formar un mayor aprecio de la celebración Eucarística de la Misa. Acercarnos a la Eucaristía con un renovado sentido de asombro y reverencia, puede movernos a participar mejor en la celebración de la Misa. El mes de Junio puede proporcionarnos la oportunidad para que la formación de nuestra fe continua en la forma en que la liturgia de la Eucaristía es igual para los jóvenes y los viejos. La Misa es donde la evangelización toma lugar. Es donde experimentamos "el encuentro". Es el Jesús resucitado, en la proclamación de su Santo Evangelio, y el alimento espiritual de su presencia en la Sagrada Comunión, que podemos encontrar en cada liturgia. Es un encuentro que nos provee la gracia y la misericordia de cambiar corazones. La Misa nos ofrece la oportunidad para expresar nuestra apertura y deseo de crecer en santidad y para responder al llamado continuo a la conversión de mente y corazón. Es este deseo que nos permitirá ser la comunidad de fe que estamos llamados a ser, aquí, en la Diócesis de Stockton. Es este "llamado a la santidad" que el Papa Francisco platica en su reciente exhortación apostólica:" regocíjate y alégrate." Él dice, "Para cada Cristiano, nuestra misión en la Tierra es para descubrir nuestro camino a la santidad. Buscando la voluntad de Dios para nosotros, discerniendo Su llamado y respondiéndole con un corazón abierto y generoso Es como alcanzamos la santidad. Mis amigos, cuando mas apreciamos y permitimos el don del Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesucristo para transformarnos cuando más nos encontramos preparados para ser enviados al final de cada Misa para "ir en paz, glorificando al Señor por tu vida!" El poder evangelizador de nuestra Misa nos capacitará para vivir nuestra fe y para dar testimonio de Ella, allá afuera. Este testimonio de la fe, tiene que empezar primero en casa, después debe ser llevado al "mercado" de nuestra sociedad herida. Espero que en este mes, dedicado al Sagrado Corazón de Jesus, nos llene de gracia en tanto crezcamos en nuestro amor por su verdadera presencia en la Eucaristía. Que el Sagrado Corazón de Jesus, traspasado y glorificado por todos y que en cada uno de nosotros, sea nuestra fuerza y consuelo. Que su verano sea uno en el que tomen tiempo para relajarse y encuentren renovación en la presencia del Señor. Reflexionar, relajase y "¡Regocijarse y alegrarse!" Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, ten piedad de nosotros.

will be celebrating his 37 anniversary of

ordination. For this reason, you are invited to

come tor the he 6 p.m. Mass to give thanks to

God for his priesthood. After Mass, we will have

a potluck to enjoy the delicious dishes that you

will provide.
