Locating and shipping construction materials was a major hurdle. All sorts of other obstacles had to be overcome as well.

A MESSAGE FROM RICHARD R. KELLEY TO OUR OUTRIGGER ‘OHANA

Our resilient Castaway Island vuvale

Castaway Island, Fiji Resort reopenedBy Dr. Richard Kelley

As promised, our Castaway Island, Fiji Resort reopened on Wednesday, June 1! The resort, located on a small island a few miles from Nadi International Airport (NAN), Fiji’s main link to the rest of the world, had been severely damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston in February. (See http://goo.gl/AwVy2M and http://goo.gl/5ePFvM for our coverage at the time.) Fortunately, no deaths or serious injuries occurred at the resort, but that was regrettably not the case on Fiji’s other islands. The cyclone, one of the strongest in memory to make landfall in Fiji, caused extensive damage, injuries and loss of life elsewhere in the country. Not long after the damage was assessed, General Manager Steven Andrews, in consultation with Darren Edmonstone and the APAC team, predicted that the resort could be back in service in just three short months and set June 1 as the reopening target date. It seemed Castaway Island, Fiji Resort >> 8

very ambitious at the time, but the goal has been achieved. “It is proof that our Castaway Island vuvale, our family, is so much stronger and more resilient than any storm,” said Steven. Steven reported that our hosts, some of whom remained on the island during the cyclone, worked tirelessly, putting in back-breaking days clearing debris, cleaning swimming pools, restoring gardens and providing support to the TA Construction team in making repairs to bures (the resort’s guest accommodations, luxuriously upgraded versions of traditional Fijian huts) and thatched roofing. Locating and shipping construction materials was a major hurdle. All sorts of other obstacles had to be overcome as well.

I am pleased to join human resources (HR) in welcoming Anuwat Kongthon to the Outrigger ‘ohana as assistant director of human resources for the Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort in Thailand. Khun Anuwat started on June 2 and reports to General Manager Rory Campbell. Before joining Outrigger, Khun Anuwat was HR and training manager at the Silavadee Pool

Anuwat graduated from Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in police science. He has since supplemented his academic studies with HR training courses at both hotel companies and the Department of Skill Development, part of the Thai government. On the personal front, Anuwat’s girlfriend shares his interests in HR working at a leading resort on Koh Samui in the same field. On his nightstand are books on Buddhist thinking (especially those of revered local monk Buddhadasa Bhikkhu), and he is a keen supporter of England’s Liverpool football club. Anuwat is an agile HR leader who welcomes new challenges and career advancement. He is a strong believer in collaboration for success in all organisations and is a great fit for the Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort. Memorial Day tradition continues at OBCBy Taryn Wong

The Holiday Inn® Resort Waikiki Beachcomber (OBC) kicked off Paddle Two – Caring for Each Other with our annual tradition of sewing and donating fresh lei to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific for the graves of our fallen soldiers. This year, OBC hosts, relatives and friends brought fresh plumeria and ti leaves, and ECAN RMS USA CO also generously supplied orchids. The team spent Friday morning sewing lei while “talking story” with a final and record tally of 178 lei: 120 fresh flower lei and 58 ti leaf lei. We are grateful for the opportunity to join the community in paying tribute and respect to our brave soldiers on Memorial Day.

ead on to find out how Cathy Bray from our retail, development and leasing department and her husband encourage their kids to be active. Mahalo for sharing, Cathy!

Including our whole family in living an active lifestyle is

important to my husband and me. We have three children, Mahina (10), Jakob (8) and Sage (6), and we want them to make a habit of living a healthy and active lifestyle at a young age so they can benefit from those habits for life. Helping them to be conscious of how much physical activity they do each day is one of the ways that we do this.

On school days, we have a “no iPad” rule. Instead, we encourage them to get out of the house and play after they have done their homework. On weekends, they know they aren’t allowed to have “screen time” unless they are active for at least an hour. They get out of the house and ride their bikes or play tag with the neighbors and often end up spending hours playing because they’re having so much fun!

We are a family of runners. My husband and I will often sign up for races to keep us motivated to run. A couple of years ago we started including the kids by signing them up for keiki runs to get them excited about running too. They’ve participated in the Children & Youth Day Fun Run, Keiki Great Aloha Run, XTERRA Kids Sprint, Jamba Banana Man Chase Keiki Fun Run and the Spartan Kids Race.

At Sage and Mahina’s school there is a program called “walkers & joggers” that they attend twice a week before school. Sage loves to get there early on those days so he can run. Over the course of the school year, Mahina ran over 26.2 miles and was rewarded with a medal from the New York Road Runners! A couple of weeks ago, I had a proud mommy moment as we crossed the line together in her first official 5k. Jakob enjoys running races too and will often finish before his big sister!

Other activities we enjoy doing as a family are hiking, kayaking, jumping on our big trampoline and riding bikes. Summer is a great time to get outside and get active and the Bray ‘ohana is hoping to get as much in as we can!

Bright and early at 5:30 a.m., teams met at Kapi‘olani Park and ran their respective legs to and from Sandy Beach. As a major sponsor, Outrigger Resorts had a very visible activation booth at the park with always-popular free shaved ice and logo items. Over 1,000 runners participated this year with 80 percent local participants and 20 percent from Japan. This was the event’s fourth year, and we hope it will continue to grow as it promotes tourism to the islands, fosters cultural understanding between residents of Hawai‘i and Japan and provides an economic boost to our state. Mahalo to our #teamOutrigger volunteers: Charles Naura and his wife Ayano, Kathy Hansberry and Kazu Inakoshi and to all our teams for representing Outrigger in the community.

Outrigger Way Paddle Two: Caring for Each OtherBy Kaipo Ho

During the first quarter of 2016, Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a teams from Hawai‘i, Denver, Guam and APAC celebrated Paddle One – Our Values as Our Guide. June through July,

teams will be moving into Paddle Two of The Outrigger Way Four Paddles Process – Caring for Each Other. At Outrigger, we believe that successful hospitality and caring for guests is dependent on two things. The first is being hospitable towards each other. The second is being accountable to the guest experience and having a can-do attitude to meet and exceed our guests’ expectations. This year, a new activity will be introduced with Paddle Two called I♥Care. I♥Care is a fun and engaging way for Outrigger hosts to acknowledge each other for demonstrating a can-do attitude and taking initiative and responsibility to do the right thing in the right way for guests and fellow hosts. All Outrigger hosts – supervisory and non-supervisory, front of the house and back of the house – can participate in I♥Care. What exactly is a can-do attitude? It is:• Being positive every day on the job, and sharing “good

vibes” with guests and fellow hosts.• Seeing that something needs to be done, and then

taking the initiative to act on it.• Viewing EVERY situation as an opportunity, and

focusing on what CAN be done, rather than what CANNOT be done.

• Being creative in doing what is necessary to meet and/or exceed guests’ expectations, our job responsibilities, and Outrigger’s business goals.

• Holding your head up high learning from your mistakes, and striving to do better the next time.

• Caring to make a positive difference in everything you do for guests and fellow hosts.

Your property and business unit Outrigger Way teams will introduce Paddle Two and the details of the new I♥Care program in upcoming weeks. We are anxious to hear about how you ♥Care!

Caring for Each OtherOHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger® celebrates International Day of FamiliesBy Denise Torres

In honor of International Day of Families, celebrated worldwide on May 15, a great time was had by all at the OHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger® second annual Family Day celebration on Sunday, May 22. Hosts and their families enjoyed lunch, games and swimming at the property. The smiles on the children as well as grandchildren were trumped only by those of our hosts who proudly showed off to their families where they work. An international array of delights included SPAM musubi, tossed salad, taco salad, shoyu chicken wings, chili, chips, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, noodles, lumpia and an abundance of desserts, thanks to Yuet Oy (Ella) Au (executive housekeeper), Denise Torres (guest services manager), Bev Fidel (director of sales and marketing), Joselyn Valenzuela (assistant housekeeper) and many others who added to our luncheon menu. Everyone enjoyed playing the Plinko board as well as Spin the Wheel for a chance to win cookies, gummies and a gift bag. If you were brave enough, you could even get a “tattoo!” For those who were working, an extended lunch was provided so they could drop by the Pool Terrace to enjoy the festivities. This event truly promoted an enjoyable workplace environment with over 80 hosts and their families in attendance. Mahalo to all for sharing your Sunday with us!

A song of welcome to Castaway’s first guests

Fourteen of the resort’s 65 bures were either rebuilt or upgraded in the process. Improvements were also made to the fabulous outdoor kitchen and beachfront restaurants. To celebrate the reopening, Chef Markus Nufer has created new menus for all of the resort’s four restaurants.

Many other members of Outrigger’s Asia-Pacific group worked hard to bring this dream to life. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the effort that not only restored the severely damaged Castaway Island, Fiji Resort, but improved it as well and brought it back on line in an impressively short time! Vinaka vaka levu! Thank you very much!
