The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal

glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of

them: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-

ness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty,

self-control, chastity.

Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices

of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order

and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of

land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we

have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can

awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-

ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare

us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and

whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to

plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-

ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-

itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach

heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.

Amen.

From the Pastor’s Desk

You may remember that while I was away last month, I offered excerpts from Pope Francis’ letter on the “Light of Faith”. As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, it seems fitting to look at those three main themes in light of the Holy Spirit.

We began with a relationship with Jesus. Yet this relationship must also be a bond of love with the Father of Love and with the Spirit of Truth, given the unity of the Trinity. Pope Francis wrote: “In faith, Christ is not simp-ly the one in whom we believe, the supreme manifestation of God’s love; he is also the one with whom we are united precisely in order to believe.” We cannot be united to Jesus without a relationship with the Father and Spirit as well. As such, the indwelling of the Spirit, given at Pentecost, draws us into the life-giving love of the Holy Trinity. As the Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us, so the Spirit is the indwelling of God within our hearts.

The second theme was of a relationship that is with and within the Church. It was as the disciples were ‘gathered together’ in that upper room that the Holy Spirit was given them. They received the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise (to send His Spirit) not simply as individuals, but as a body of believers, the nucleus of a budding Church. That same Spirit continues to be given, yes, to individuals, but always in the midst of and for the benefit of the Church. Pope Francis writes: “Because faith is born of an encounter which takes place in history and lights up our journey through time, it must be passed on in every age. It is through an unbroken chain of witnesses that we come to see the face of Jesus.” Our very desire for the Spirit, and our reception of the gift, are dependent upon the wit-ness of those who have gone before us.

The third point we touched on was that faith is for the good of society. Note that after the apostles re-ceived the gift of the Spirit, they did not remain in that upper room slapping each other on the back and celebrat-ing their good fortune. They went immediately out into the world to proclaim the Good News. Pope Francis writes: “Precisely because it is linked to love (cf. Gal 5:6), the light of faith is concretely placed at the service of jus-tice, law and peace. Faith does not draw us away from the world or prove irrelevant to the concrete concerns of the men and women of our time.” Christ came for the salvation of all.

All of this points to the heart of what it means to ‘live in the Spirit’ who has been given to us. We are inca-pable of manufacturing this relationship with Jesus, in the midst of the Church, for the good of the world. It is al-ways gift. Perhaps we should remember to be grateful.
