Meet the seminarians of the Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston. On June 11, Tuesday, at 5:00 p.m., Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral St. Joseph, followed by a reception where you can meet seven men who are studying to become priests in our diocese. These men are discerning a call to become spiritual fathers of the People of God in West Virginia. One of them may be your priest in the future! Bring your family and tell these men that we need them and that we love them! This is a practical opportunity to support the priesthood during this age of controversy and turmoil.

FROM OUR PASTOR: UPDATE: Repair to the HVAC Systems of St. Vincent’s Parish and Rectory: Both heating and air-conditioning systems that serve St. Vincent’s church and the rectory are failing at the same time. The rectory HVAC system is currently working but is on its last leg. The church system has a major weakness in that both the heating and air-conditioning system share a set of iron water pipes (not stainless steel) which are corroding on the inside. This pipe system moves both hot water in the winter and cold water in the summer. These pipes are original to the building. Eventually one of two things will occur: these pipes are replaced, or we move to an updated and different HVAC system. On May 28th , we discovered a bearing and shaft in the church air handler (located behind the Mary Shrine and above the work sacristy) is broken. We think we can repair this air handler temporally, however, the problem of the corroding water pipes remains. After consulting with parish staff, the buildings are property specialist from the diocese, and members of the St. Vincent Parish Finance Council the following course of action is being considered: • Get 3 estimates for a complete replacement of

two HVAC systems in the church and rectory. New units will provide electric AC and gas heat. The existing ductwork remains in use. It will take us a few weeks to determine the cost of this renovation. We are guessing that the cost of replacing both the rectory and parish HVAC units will be around $180,000.

• Secure funding for this renovation through the following sources: 1) parishioners will provide for this renovation through a designated 2019 CSA parish goal. 2) pursue grants from local foundations. 3) Request emergency funding from the diocese to cover the remaining costs.

Our parish has been able to accomplish some great things in the last few years. We have replaced the roof of the church and we have re-surfaced our main parking lot. We have improved our Sunday liturgies, and we have instituted a small group ministry with over 125 participants. The Lord has blessed us in many ways. With God’s help and by working together, we will be able to conquer this next challenge as well.

CATHOLIC SHARING APPEAL: Our parish has received $36,507 through 59 gifts. Our parish theme of the 2019 CSA drive is “Missions that Matter at St. Vincent Parish.” Our

goal is to raise $234,585 this year to support missions that you care about. As we kick off the 2019 CSA campaign, here is how your gift will be used: • The Diocesan Share: $24,585. We are in the process of securing the diocesan share with

parish funds. Therefore, every dollar you give will be returned 100% back to the parish without any diocesan taxes.

• Priest Salary: $50,000 would go to paying for the salary and benefits of your current pastor.

• Heaters: $80,000 would maintain the heating and air-conditioning systems in the parish rectory.

• Band: $20,000 would pay half of the cost of our musicians at the 9:00 am celebration of our Sunday Eucharist. A generous anonymous donor pays the other half.

• Schools: $60,000 would be used to meet our parish obligations to Wheeling Catholic Central ($31,000) and support St. Vincent de Paul Grade School (an additional $19,000 to be used for tuition assistance, above our budgeted parish support) and give a modest one time bonus to the salaries of our grade school teachers ($10,000).

100% of the money that goes to the diocese will be used for ministry in the state of West Virginia and none of the money will be used for legal fees or settlements related to charges of sexual abuse.

CHEER CAMP: Central Catholic High School will sponsor a Cheer Camp Thursday, August 8, Friday, August 9, and Saturday, August 10, from 8:30 am—12:30 pm in

Campers will receive Cheering and dance instruction by CCHS Cheerleaders, mid morning snacks, and a camp t shirt. In addition, campers will be the Central Cheerleaders’ special guests at the varsity football game on Friday, September 6, where they will be treated to free admission and welcomed to participate in pre-game cheer festivities! A PRICELESS GIFT By Helen

Steiner Rice

Friendship is a priceless gift That cannot be bought or sold,

But its value is far greater Than a mountain made of gold.

For gold is cold and lifeless It can neither see nor hear And in the time of trouble It Is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen Nor heart to understand,

It cannot bring you comfort Or reach out a helping hand.

So when you ask God for a gift Be thankful if He sends

Not diamonds, pearls, or riches But the love of real, true friends.
