Worship In June

This is a month of transition as we say goodbye to Pastor Patti and prepare to welcome pastors Margaret Gil-likin and Anna Viehland. June 9, at St. Paul’s, will be a Choir Sunday celebrating the gift and power of the Holy Spirit on this Pentecost Sunday. June 16, the St. Paul’s Chancel Choir will be traveling to Billings to sing for the ordination service at Annual Conference. Montana PRIDE weekend is June 20-23. We will be hosting a wor-ship service at St. Paul’s on Saturday, June 22 at 9 am. Following the service, we will organize to march in the parade. All are welcome!

Though the tendency is to disconnect in transition, especially once summer hits, we encourage you to draw close to one another and to God during this season. It is important to stay connected to one another as we journey through this transition together.

Justice League

To promote justice for all by identifying local, state, national, and global is-sues of social injustice so that public awareness and education can take place. We seek to prioritize social justice issues for timely presentation to the congregation to connect individuals with the social issues of their particular interest and opportunities to become actively involved in them.

Join us in the Fireside Room at 5:30 PM, on June 20, to watch Bryan Steven-son's TED Talk about racism, incarceration and justice. July 11, the Justice League hosts a walk through one of Helena's labyrinths located across the street from the former Elk's Club just above the ice skating rink on Highway 12. We can park at Elk's Club. We will walk the laby-rinth and then talk about peace and justice. There is a drawing of a labyrinth on the gate entering to the short trail to the labyrinth. The land is owned by the Episcopal Diocese and open to all.

Food Share Sunday The Sheila Cates Circle of St. Paul’s United Methodist Women is sponsoring a Food Share Sunday the third Sunday of each month.

Needed food items this month are tuna & peanut butter. You may bring your items to church on the third Sunday and place them in the Food Share box in the entry- way. Of course, the church will accept donations any-time, but we would like to see an outpouring of donations on June 16. Items will be picked up the following Wednesday. Thank you for sharing your bounty with those who have less. Food Share appreciates your help. For more infor- mation contact Claudia Davis at 461-9618.

The justice League group and members of the HUMM Office recently went on a tour at Helena Food Share. Here are some facts we found out and some needs from their Wish List.

United Methodist Women of

Covenant & St. Paul’s Spring Clothing Drive This year's spring clothing drive will continue through May and June. Blackfeet United Methodist Parish can no longer take our clothing as they do not have volunteers to run the store. We do have a need for gently used clothing here in Helena, at God's Love. The need for new underwear, socks, pillows and towels and add that all clothing for women, men, and children is appreciat-ed. They do have storage space, so winter and summer things are acceptable. Your donations may be delivered directly to God's Love, brought on Sunday mornings, or to the Church office during the week. Thanks for your generosity in supporting our friends at God's Love.

Summer Picnic Program All women of the church are invited to a picnic at Spring Meadow Lake on July 10 at 5 PM. We do dinner and a program about the offerings of our local YWCA . UMW will provide chicken and water. Please bring a salad or dessert and any special drink you would like. This is our Summer Unit meeting and we look forward to a mid-summer catch up. Please come and join us

McCurdy Ministries The McCurdy Ministries are a 106-year-old United Methodist National Mission Institution formerly known as McCurdy Schools of Northern New Mexico providing after school, preschool, mental health counseling, summer camp and youth programs. Since be-coming a community center in August of 2017, we have expanded the ways we impact our community by providing adult educa-tion, high school equivalency, literacy coaching, parenting and grand-parenting support groups while expanding our programs for children and youth. Each Box Top collected and turned in by McCurdy Ministries Community Center means a 10 cent donation to help fund field trips, class parties and classroom supplies for MCS students St. Paul's UMW provides support to McCurdy Ministries by the collection of Box Tops for Education. There is a collection box for the box tops coupons in the east end of the Fellowship Hall. Please consider supporting this vital mission by donating your box tops coupons.

Staff/Parish Relations

Save the Dates Sunday, July 21-Celebrating Covenant’s PRESENT Potluck

Monday, September 30-Celebrating Covenant’s FUTURE Potluck

Celebrating 50 years in our original church building. Many fun activities are in the works for our Joyful Jubilee and we invite you to be present with all of them. Mark your calendar for our next event; the Sunday, July 21 Covenant family reunion and barbeque. Worship will be at 10 AM and the barbeque will follow. There will be memory sharing, activities for children, ongoing slide presentation to watch at your leisure, display of historic files, etc. Be sure to invite your friends from out of town who were past CUMC members/friends!

The Joyful Jubilee is also a time for us to reflect on the requirements, responsibilities, and maintenance of building ownership. It is an opportunity to give a financial gift to CUMC that will be designated for the Trustees Fund and work that is required over time or maybe a major expense that results from worn out equipment. We will be providing more information about potential expenses in the future. Come and be joyful with us!

Another month has passed and your Staff Parish Relations (SPR) Team has good news to report. Our hopes for a part time position to add to the clergy team have been realized! You may have already heard Bishop Karen Oliveto has decided to appoint to HUMM the Rev. Anna Scharbo, effective July 1. We will know her as Rev. Anna Viehland as she will be married to Rev. Daniel Viehland, the pastor in East Helena and Townsend. She is coming to us after recently serving as a United Methodist minister in Florida. She has assured us she has visited Montana in the winter and looks forward to making the move! Rev. Viehland noted she even has a coat! We may have to help her learn about boots, mittens, and shovels. Our pastors will work together, under the leadership of Rev. Margaret Gillikin, to identify their roles and re-sponsibilities as they serve St. Paul’s and Covenant. Having three individual clergy people will allow us to hear from our regular pastors more consistently on Sunday mornings and to see increased clergy presence in our church and commu-nity activities. It will also allow our pastors to lead more balanced work and personal lives. This is the additional dedica-tion of resources for which we have been praying and working. We are grateful to our District Superintendent Jan Wit-man and to the Cabinet for being responsive to our requests. We are also grateful to Pastors Patti and Sami who have been dedicated to serving our two churches in the best way humanly possible despite being only two people! As a congregation it is our responsibility to be the church. Recent local changes illustrate how pastors come and go in various appointments over their careers. We, the people in the pews, remain and are the hands and feet of the church. Working together with our pastors, the future is in our hands and the outlook is bright! Stay tuned for later details on some opportunities in July to welcome both of our new pastors. Staff Parish Relations Team members are as follows if you have questions or thoughts you’d like to share: St. Paul’s: Dave Nielsen, Liz Kohlstaedt, Frank Montibeller, Bill Avey, Michele Marsh, Roger Stone, Jon Nehring, Su-san Duncan Covenant: Lee Benner, Kathy Chase, Mary Guse, Jacquie Haney, Nanette Whitman-Holmes, Sandee Sept

Spring has sprung… Oh, hallelujah! Clean up and maintenance of St. Paul’s is in session. The Sanctuary window cleaning has been scheduled for mid-

June. The painting to cover the graffiti damage has been completed. This included the south side of the sanctuary, on

Lawrence St., below the sculpture off the patio area, and the side of Susanna’s Place, near the garden bench. In progress or coming soon: Our lawn maintenance service has completed the spring mow and clean-up of lawn areas and will continue through

the rest of the season. The St. Paul’s Landscape team will be working on our beautiful gardens - see your weekly bulletin if you’d like to help keep it looking great!

The Trustees are starting a contact list of folks that want to help with different projects. We will be in the church lobby on some Sundays to sign you up. You can do one hour, a couple of days, or anything

in between. We will contact you with the need and see what you can do. Thank you! We will be putting together a clean-up crew to get the parsonage ready for the new pastor, Margaret Gillikin, in

June. Please contact Crystal Coffey-Avey if you’d like to be part of this vital service! There continues to be roof leak issues in some of our buildings that will now be much easier to address. Thankfully,

we have so many people in the congregation willing to help out whenever possible! Our Building/Campus Assessment Group continues to meet and evaluate our needs and wants for the future

regarding how our buildings and grounds are serving us and what improvements can and should be made. Many notes were made, and some ideas include:

Building Accessibility—Susanna’s and improving accessibility in the Sanctuary. Paving the dirt parking lot Parsonage siding and paint Adding more media access to different meeting rooms Ideas for increasing the usage of our beautiful patio Discussions on these topics are ongoing with input of many groups: Finance, Trustees, Church Council, our

church members and other sub-committees. Updates will continue to be available. Our Safety Group has been meeting and sifting through much information to narrow down the areas of safety to

focus on for our buildings and grounds. The initial emergency guidelines will be released soon. This is an ongoing process that will help keep our congregation safe while keeping St. Paul’s a welcoming place in the community.

As always, please let us know any concerns or ideas you have. We appreciate our church community and want to be good stewards. We are here for you! Board of Trustees : Heidi Gold, president; Crystal Coffey-Avey, secretary; Shirley Warehime, finance; Perry Brown; Carol Bruderer; Kirk Miller; Tom Naegele; Tom Reilly; and don't forget! You can contact Angie, our Office and Facilities Coordinator, in the office at 442-5643.

Weekend Warrior Worship After a long postpone this winter, we have had our first Weekend Warrior Worship! On May 19, ten people gathered at the South Hills Disc Golf Course here in Helena for pancakes, bacon, and discussion. Some tried disc golf for the first time; others visited around the griddle enjoying the smell of bacon! After eating and re-flecting on the wonderful outdoor opportunities we have in our area, the group wandered around the park-ing lot and grassy areas picking up garbage. Thank you for all who participated and helped with this inaugural service! There will be more to come this summer, so dust off your fly rods, your hiking boots, and get the sunscreen out!

Meet the Staff This month, we’re starting a new series of articles about our staff. With all the new faces, we want to make sure you know who we are and what we do! This month, we begin with the face you see when you stop at the church office!

My name is Angie Cejka (that’s pronounced “Chay-kuh” for those of you not familiar with the letter-salad method of Czech spelling!) and I recently joined Helena’s United Methodist Minis-tries as the office manager and facilities coordinator. If you need something, I’ll do my best to make it happen with speed, grace, and precision. My goal is the be the glue that holds the office together. I moved here with my family in 2016. My husband Greg is a shop and welding teacher at Helena High; we have a 20-year-old adopted nonbinary nibling named Lupe and a 6-year-old biological son named Charlie. We moved here from Togiak, Alaska and while we miss the ocean, we’re learning to love the mountains. In my spare time, I create fiber arts such as cross stitch and crochet, read fantasy and horror novels, and I love to cook. If you see me out and about, make sure to say hi!
