Hi Nobles and Ladies, I think we are all ready for Summer; after that long Winter we endured! Hope you are all making some fun summer plans.

The Ladies Spring Social and Luncheon was very well attended. A big “thank you” to Lady Terri and her crew for putting it all together. Also, to all the fine ladies of El Zagal, you are all very much appreciated for all that you do! The Silent Auction brought in over $450.00 for the transportation fund. Again, nice job ladies!

The Spring Ceremonial is right around the corner. June 14th & 15th in Medora promises to be lots of fun for the whole family!

The Bully Pulpit will challenge all those that choose to play golf.

The Pote’s reception will be on the Roughrider Patio for an early evening of drinks and some great appetizers.

On Saturday we will welcome some new candidates and their ladies, and show them how much fun we have raising money for El Zagal and helping kids!

The kids will spend the day with Cowboy Larry touring Medora and participating in a scavenger hunt!

We will also enjoy the always famous “Pitchfork Fondue” and the wonderful Medora Musical; for those attending that.

If you haven’t seen the renovation going on at your El Zagal Shrine, you need to stop in and see all the changes. There has been quite a crew there, working tirelessly, evenings

and weekends. We are all in for quite a treat when it is complete!

The “Here Comes Summer Party” is scheduled for Thursday, June 20th at the Shrine at 5:00PM. This event is always popular and well attended. Lots of games, prizes and treats for everyone! With your help, it will continue to be a success. If you have any questions, call Steve Larson for details.

The Jamestown Clowns Motorcycle Run and Dance is Saturday, June 22nd. They are giving away a beautiful bike, so get your ticket soon, and come on out and have a good time!

For those who have not paid their dues, please contact Lisa or go online and get them paid up. Currently, we have approximately 110 people that have NOT paid their dues. Let’s get paid up and get involved so you can get to know your fellow Shriners!

Remember to always check your Shrine calendar to see what is happening, so that you don’t miss out on all the fun events planned. It’s the best way to get to know your Divan and fellow members. Get on one of the committees or participate in events that are of particular interest to you! I promise, you will have a great time! Participation is key!

Director’s Staff 5K/Suds n Spuds Benefits Transportation Fund

Well, we had a great day with our events on April 27th. We kicked off the morning with our 9th Annual Shriner 5K run/walk. This year was our biggest and best ever! We had over 100 participants this year. We had to modify our route with Elm Street being flooded but we pulled it off.

The highlight of the 5K event was receiving a generous donation from one of our runners.

Chantel Machtell from Bell Bank donated her “Pay It Forward” money to our Transportation Fund --- A check for $2500.00.

After all was said and done, we should net close to $4000.00 for our Transportation Fund.

Although the 2019 5K event is in the books, we’re looking ahead to making this even bigger for 2020. There will be a challenge issued to all Nobility to get out there and run or walk to help our cause.

Thanks to all who participated by running or walking, thanks to the Nobles of the Director’s Staff and their families and a HUGE thanks to Beyond Running! They go above and beyond to help make this event a success for El Zagal.

Next on the docket for the day was our 9th Annual Suds ‘N Spuds! The event was well attended with more than 200 people. We had a great selection of brewers and potato chefs. There is no greater sight than to see our Shrine Center full of people enjoying what we do--having fun! Our silent auction was a huge success!

By the end of the day, we anticipate donating close to $7000.00 to the Transportation Fund with proceeds from the 5K and silent auction!

With spring finally upon us, our motorcycles are out of the garage and on the streets! We look forward to a great riding season this year as we work toward parades and competition at MSA.

Last, I want to thank all the Nobles and families of the Director’s Staff for all their hard work and commitment to what we stand for.

Ladies Hospital Auxiliary

We Will Continue Our MissionThe El Zagal Shrine Auxiliary met on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at the Shrine. A great report was given by Sue Paul concerning the status of our group and some suggestions for Fundraising. She and Diane Hanson represented us at the General Auxiliary Meeting and found it most informative. We will continue to function as an auxiliary. There will NOT BE A STYLE SHOW IN OCTOBER. We will continue to do blankets, collect toys, save pop tabs and hold fundraisers. Watch for ideas and events in the September issue of Camel Tales. Enjoy a relaxing summer.

The Oriental Band is working on trying to stay an El Zagal Unit, but we could really use some new members so we can keep doing Ceremonials and having fun as a unit! We meet the 1st and 3rd Monday’s of the month and would like to have you join us!!! Staying involved is part of our Fraternal Organization. So whether it’s drums, cymbal, sticks or triangle - there is an instrument for anyone!

Well, I guess you can say that summer is here – some days. And some days are still winter.On May 21st is low vale. That is always a fun time. The Mandan Indians big day is coming. This is when we go to Camp Grassick and dance for the little kids. This is something we have been doing for many years. We have one Indian, Marty Bless, who has been dancing for many, many years. I think he is only 85 years young.Keep up the good work Marty. We could use more Indians like him; Chief Mato is trying.After the dance we give all of the kids ice cream bars. Then our chief, Don Eck, takes us to the Lake Side Bar and we get fire water and chicken. And it’s free.I don’t know what else to say. I hope we have a long summer this year. Banding Together to Get the Job Done

In my last little article about the Frontiersmen, I was stressing our communal style pre-planning for the Shrine Circus.Well...The Circus has come and gone, and very successfully at that. April 13th, the Frontiersmen and helpful volunteers gathered at the West River Ice Center and started to unload trailers of stands, machines, and novelties. Everything needful to make our circus goers happy. The concession areas went together like clockwork, partially thanks to somebody’s idea to take pictures of the way it was set up the year before.

Sunday morning, April 14, we were off and running. Popcorn was popping, cotton candy was spinning, novelties were lit up, and the Pote was there to greet our ticket holders. The doors were opened and the volunteers went to work putting the crowd in a circus mood. And so it continued, for three shows that Sunday, and one the following Monday.

As we now relax in the afterglow, we have already begun to think ahead to next year, and in true Frontiersman fashion, started banding together as brothers to get the job done.

Of course the Circus is not the only thing on our minds. It is that time of year to start cleaning our guns, oiling our leathers, and combing our furs, to get ready for a summer of parades, the Ceremonial in Medora, and other summer activities.Michael Stevenson


Busy, busy. Tis the season. Happy summer everyone!

Well the GoKarts are slicked up and ready to roll. We’ve got at least 5 parades already this summer with the possibility of a few more. That’s a lot of rubber to be burned. There will be a list of dates on our FB page. If you’re around come check it out. A lot of laughs, free candy and a bunch of fezes flying around. There may be a few breakdowns… Heck, you might even get to see a wreck! Good times. Hope to see you in the streets! There’s still a bunch of fundraising to do and we’re always looking for new ideas. Therefore I’m proud to announce we will be hosting a Hoop-Shoot/HORSE tournament at the Elks this summer. The first annual! The date is still fuzzy at the time of writing this but we’ll be advertising. Come down and see if you’ve still got that jumper! I’ll make sure to have “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen playing. Prizes to be awarded but it’s mostly for bragging rights.

There’s still a few gun raffle tickets left! $100 dollars gets you in the hunt for a sweet firearm. Drawing is June 21st at the Gladstone hotel. All ticket holders are invited. In closing, I just want to say Thank You. In this time of political and social turmoil and just plain nastiness towards each other, it’s good to know there are people like you out there. Selflessly willing to sacrifice time, money and effort for the well-being of your fellow man. Not much of that going on these days. Bismarck DustersParades Get Cool Start, But Socials Warm the Heart

The Dusters had their monthly meeting at the Bismarck Masonic Center on May 13th. Thank you, Eastern Star, for providing the soup and croissant lunch. President Tim Dawson made announcements of upcoming events. President Tim urged everyone who plans on attending the Spring Ceremonial the 14th and 15th of June in Medora to make reservations. Also let him know if you are bringing a car.

Several members elected not to go to the Ceremonial. They will be attending the Grand Lodge of North Dakota Annual Communication to be held here in Bismarck that same weekend, as support for our own, Judge Dale Sandstrom, who will be ending his tenure as Grand Master of the Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons of North Dakota.

It is very unfortunate that these two events occur at the same time and we would encourage the Divan to buy a calendar, so this conflict does not ever arise again.

Six Duster cars came out of winter storage and were in The Annual Band Day Parade on May 10th. Even though the weather was on the cool side, some of the cars had the thermometer needle getting close to the boiling point for the uphill ride on 4th Ave.

The old fire truck driven by Duster Bob Simmers, ran out of gas. Bob is probably the best Duster mechanic, but apparently he doesn’t know that an old truck won’t run without gas in the tank.

Following the parade, President Tim and Lady Kathy hosted the Dusters at their home. It was fun and might start a new trend of Duster home, summer socials. Any Volunteers! The next Duster social will be coming up on May 23 at someone’s house to be determined.

On a sad note, former Duster and Lodge 5 Mason, Dwight Wehr who passed away last fall in FL, will have a Masonic Memorial Service on Tuesday June 4, 7PM at the Bismarck Masonic Center.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday June 5th, 10AM at Zion Lutheran Church, 4th Street. A Military Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery south of Mandan, at 12:00 Noon where he will join his deceased wife Heide, both US Navy veterans.

After the interment, the family invites all Masons and Friends to the Home of Heather and Lance Bargmann, 2612 Ithaca Drive, Bismarck for lunch and remembrance.

Lodge Activities include Low Vale on May 21st at Wayne Ruzika’s, 31700 Highway 1804, Wilton ND (north on 1804).

Well that’s about all, so…Get those motors running…head out on the highway…lookin for adventure…or whatever comes my way…

Color Guard CrooningsYou know you are in spring time when you get the wiff of the lutefisk on the grill as you drive around town! Such a delight.

Our snowbirds are mostly back. You can tell, because they take up all the good parking spots at the local bars. Good to have them back! Roger Forsgren was just seen last week doing a pole dance at Long Bridge – same routine as last year. Bruce Stone was throwing dollars at Roger to egg him on – we are back to normal.

A couple of our Past Potentates and a Divan member have been traveling the globe this past month, checking out the Global Warming affect. Bruce Nereson, Brad Richards, Lowell Thompson & Jerome Tappe (don’t these guys ever work??) have been in Alaska and points North. I hear a couple guys lost their wallets, one was caught skinny dipping in the employee pool at the Radisson in Knuk, Alaska (Tappe) and Thompson made friends with a whale skinner named Ralph in the Arctic Circle. And I am here to tell you they didn’t sign up ONE Shriner – shame on those guys!

The Color Guard is prepping a bus to take to Medora for the Spring Ceremonial. Driver Ian Somerville has recently passed his driver’s license test and feels he can handle a coach bus. Should be an experience! The bar tender…….I mean Activity Director Paul (give me one more) Meszaros has the plan put together, complete with mops and extra bags, just in case of “accidents”. He thinks of everything! I hear that Jake & Kay Meszaros will be joining the group. They have asked to be picked up at the Northern Gentlemen’s Club in Fargo. My, Kay is certainly up for expanding her

horizons! Jake likes to go for the French fries and watermelons……..

We welcome a new member to the Color Guard – yes, it is Karl the Beer Cooler! He looks great behind the bar! After months of mourning, we finally have a new beer cooler! We hope he can be as “active” as his predecessor! He told me he is “here to serve”, so welcome aboard!

Father Jerry has come up with a new fund raising idea – a Color Guard calendar featuring a picture of a different Color Guard member each month wearing a speedo on the local beach. The prototype came the other day, and funny enough, every month was Jerry in the same speedo we see him in at Ceremonials. Good think I missed my turn! They are on sale now for $29.95. Don’t worry – they ship in a plain brown wrapper!

We sure hope you can come visit us in Color Guard land this summer! We are always up for “company”! Our meetings are the 3rd Monday of each month and offer a social hour, meal and meeting. Always a great time, and hardly anyone gets arrested when attending!

Please…….don’t forget! There are many units and clubs out there, but there is none better than the Color Guard – many try to complete, but fall by the wayside! So, ALWAYS remember, NEVER FORGET! It’s a great time to be a Shriner, but there is NOTHING FINER THAN A COLOR GUARD SHRINER!

Badlands, Bike Run & MoreHello to all Nobles and Ladies, can you believe it’s JUNE ??!! Medora Ceremonial is upon us. I hope everyone in El Zagaldom has plans to go. It will be such an adventure. A fun time will be had by all. Activities for everyone.

The magically majestic Badlands are the consummate setting for our illustrious event. Illustrious Sir Rick sure can pick’em. With little or no effort, it should prove to be glorious.

Now, talking about Golf, the foursome I’ve talked myself into playing with ( Bob, Nick, Joel) didn’t realize I am playing with them til it was too late). In fact this might be the first they hear of it.

We tee off at 10am Friday; all other teams should be aware of that… just sayin’. It’s hard to believe collectively we came in with a -27. Oh, wait, that hasn’t happened yet. The Clown BIKE RUN is June 22. I can’t stress enough to get your tickets for the New, 2019 Custom Harley Street Glide, which also will allow you to come to the Dance (REDLINE) and partake in the scrumptious food prepared by Clown Chef Dan Smith. How much better does it get? --- The unparalleled socialization will consume the rest of the evening. Please get your tickets NOW !!! All Clowns have them or access to them. Stutsman Harley in Jamestown is the place to blast off. Registration starts at 9:00am; kickstands up at 11am. We will have the bus for non-riders. Reservations are accepted. The 2019 El Zagal/S&L Computers PRO/AM Charity Golf Event is getting closer, August 21st. Start working on your teams and hole sponsors. Let’s continue the success of this for the hospital and transportation funds.

$1,000 for a team of 4, includes golf, cart & meals and we should be playing the new holes this year.

Guaranteed registration cut off will be July 15th. After that date, you are not assured of a team spot.

Hole sign sponsors are only $150 for some of the best golf advertising a company can have. Be part of the FUN!

2 CLUB TUESDAY GOLF

Round 1 is in the books. We had 5 brave souls play in some less than ideal conditions, but the rewards in the end were worth the price of admission. The leader in the clubhouse is Jason Volmer with a 37. We will have played again on May 15th, so that may have changed.

Our next “official” golf night will be on June 5th, then not again until July 17th. Put these dates on your calendar.

I am certain that there will be a group of us playing fairly regular on Tuesday nights, so come on out and hone your skills for the 20th Annual PRO/AM tournament.

April was like March, May was like April, and hopefully June will be June! Summer has to be here soon, our summers are short enough.

Finally, we can get out to the golf course or to the lake or even the Shooting Park. Our Trap team is in full swing and we have a couple of 2 Club Tuesdays planned.
