Perhaps it’s still heard today but when I was younger, the phrase “at’s so funny I forgot to laugh” was oſten used as a sarcastic comeback to someone who failed at trying to say/ do something funny. It was usually accompanied by a wry smile and a slowly uttered “Ha. Ha.” Many of you know what I’m referring to and this probably means you’re over 40. I know. Go ahead. Say it. I briefly attempted to find this saying’s origins beyond remembering my sister, Cindy, using it in reference to something I would say when we were growing up in the ‘70s. I know it’s used in the 1986 Stephen King movie, Stand By Me (one of his best, in my opinion), and it’s even the title of an episode of Arthur, the PBS children’s cartoon (can’t comment). Since reading the book by James Martin, Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of joy, humor, and laughter. is is the third James Martin book I’ve chosen for the Book and Brown Bag class, and like the other two (My Life with the Saints and Jesus: A Pilgrimage), it didn’t disappoint. Martin is quite humorous and writes about the spiritual life and Christianity in a wonderfully accessible and engaging style. I highly recommend it for your summer/beach reading. In chapter four, Happiness Attracts, Martin gives “eleven and a half serious reasons for humor in the spiritual life”. Here they are. Each one begins with the word “Humor”: 1) evangelizes, 2) is a tool for humility, 3) can help us recognize reality, 4) speaks truth to power, 5) shows courage, 6) deepens our relationship with God 7) welcomes, 8) is healing, 9) fosters good human relations, 10) opens our minds, 11) is fun, and finally, 11) is oſten practical. I found these very interesting regarding our life together at the Advent as well as in my own life. Martin is not advocating a mindless, insensitive, or carefree attitude toward joy, humor, and laughter. His points are made with keen and simple insights. He is able to give examples and experiences that most people can identify. In the first of the “serious reasons” listed above, Martin writes, “Joy, humor, and laughter show one’s faith in God. For Christians, an essentially hopeful outlook shows people that you believe in the Resurrection, in the power of life over death, and in the power of love over hatred...For believers in general, humor shows your trust in God, who will ultimately make all things well. Joy reveals faith…Joy attracts people to God.” So don’t forget to laugh this summer! I hope to see you at church. Seriously. I wasn’t being funny. Ned+

JUNE-JULY 2019 MUSIC | FOUNDATION 3Many thanks to our Graduating Seniors and Music Program Participants! Congratulations to Maddie Green and Sarah Grace Byers, graduating seniors who were part of the Angel and Junior Choir during their grade school years. Also pictured is the 2006 Angel Choir with their director, Marybeth Sanders. It’s hard to believe that these young singers are graduating from high school! One of the traditions for the members of the Adult Choirs is to have their End of Year gathering at the famous Nu-way. The camaraderie and the food never get old!

Summer Choir Happy summer everybody! By the time you read this, Memorial Day will have passed, meaning that the music department is in summer mode. There will be no midweek rehearsals for any ensemble until after Labor Day, but the joy of music making will definitely continue over the next few months! On Sundays during the summer, all parishioners are invited to come to the choir room upstairs in Pendleton Hall at 9:15am to learn a simple anthem for the upcoming 10:15am service. Anyone aged 10 to 110 may participate. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. No regular commitment is required; just a desire to make a joyful noise!

Independence Day Service in the Church On Thursday, July 4, the regularly scheduled 12:15pm Eucharist will be held in the church in honor of our nation’s birthday. We will sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and other patriotic hymns. This promises to be a community-wide event.

The Gift of a Medical Directive

As part of a person's right to self-determination, every adult may accept or refuse any recommended medical treatment. This is relatively easy when people are well and can speak. Unfortunately, during serious illness they are often unconscious or otherwise unable to communicate their wishes - at the very time when many critical decisions need to be made.

A Medical Directive or a Health Care Power of Attorney allows you to record your wishes regarding various types of medical treatments in several situations so that your desires can be respected. It also lets you appoint a proxy, someone to make medical decisions in your place if you should become unable to make them on your own.

The Medical Directive comes into effect only if you become incompetent (unable to make decisions and too sick to have wishes). You can change it at any time until then. As long as you are competent, you should discuss your care directly with your physician, attorney, and especially your family.

Give your family clear guidance in a very stressful time. This is a priceless gift.

We have an excellent booklet from the Episcopal Church Foundation entitled, “Faithful Stewards of Your Good Gifts” which includes comprehensive instruction on all of these issues. Please contact Kit Jennings at 864-504-3689 or [email protected] for a copy.

Women’s Bible Study - Summer Edition We invite all women to join us for a two session Bible Study led by Laura Estevez! Laura and her family will be home from Ecuador for part of the summer, and she will be combining her gifts in art with her love of scripture. Western Art History in relationship to the stories of the Bible is fascinating. Laura will be leading a two-week study on Art and the Bible. During this study we will look at Art History, two specific artists and paintings, and how they relate to a Bible story. The end of the study each week will be followed by a creative prayer exercise. Hope to see you there! The dates will be June 20 and June 27 at 9:00 in the PCLC.

Parents in Community Sunday School ClassYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Members from the Parents in Community class held a brainstorming session in late-April to discuss ways to rejuvenate the class. The group has GREAT plans for the Fall including a Kick-off Brunch on Sunday, August 18. Cabe Loring has also agreed to speak on occasions to the class. A schedule will be developed during the summer. We hope all parents of children living in the home will be involved. More details coming in August. If you have ideas, please feel free to contact Sally Gaskins or Steve Battocchio or staff support, Laura Bauknight.

Mary H. Wright Elementary School News5th Grade Luncheon: Maurice “Mr. Moe” Wedman, a Spartanburg High School Teacher Cadet, was the featured speaker at the 5th Grade Luncheon. Moe has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and will play football there. His speech centered around the word RESPECT - Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Superlative, Positive, Expectation, Consistency, and Tenacity. He shared life lessons and self-discipline that were taught to him by his parents. His father said that manners and respect would take him far in this world. This message made quite an impact upon the students. Advent volunteers were greeted by a wave of “thank you” as they cleared plates. Moe’s mother said he needed to devote one hour to reading during his summer vacations. We were all impressed by Moe’s confident delivery and lack of notes. He explained that his mother said if he had been asked to deliver a speech, the least he could do was memorize it!Joy Oates and Julie Schwartz said it’s been a good year! They are grateful to the Advent volunteers who have assisted them with time, talent, and donations for school supplies and Christmas gifts. The field days’ volunteer program has been expanding. The 5th graders have been helping the younger students, and this year, we had several Interact Club members - Advent parishioners Graham Scheel, Taylor Pittman, Hank Warren, and Bern Jungkind. Please look at the Gallery page for more photos.School Supplies Drive: We will begin accepting donations for MHW school supplies in mid-July. Donations of recommended items may be made; monetary donations are also welcome! Watch for more information in the weekly Bell Ringer and emails over the summer. The supplies will be blessed on Sunday, August 11. SAVE THE DATE “Rejoice! Celebrating JOY at the Advent!” Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 15, when we will celebrate our life together with a Ministries Fair and Stewardship Kick-off. This celebration will take place during the Sunday school hour and will include a breakfast prepared by our Youth Pilgrims. More details in the August Parish Paper. Let’s pack the house and REJOICE together!$145,310 Awarded in Grants in 2019 Did you know that the Outreach Commission and Episcopal Church Women (ECW) awarded $145,310 in grants to local non-profits and our partner missionaries, the Estevez’s and the Vivanco’s? This total does not include additional funds that ECW awards on the diocesan and international level. Our hope is that everyone will remain committed to supporting the Oyster Roast and the Bazaar as all money raised supports Outreach. If you have any questions or comments about Outreach, please contact Witney Fisher, chair or Laura Bauknight, staff support.

The Advent’s Cumberland Mission Trip: An Annual Ritual by Wayne ZurendaFor the past 24 years, a team of “Missioners” from the Episcopal Church of the Advent has trekked to Sewanee, TN, home of The University of the South which lies high upon the Cumberland Plateau, to offer help for those in need. Building new homes, renovating old ones, clearing home sites, laying pipe, or being threatened by gunfire (well, sort of), the list of projects is endless and occasionally boasts unique, briefly scary, and comical events. Housing Sewanee, which works closely with the University’s Outreach Program, provides homes for the less fortunate, determines the projects and directs our efforts. Our motivation to return“What we gain from the trip is an ongoing camaraderie, a strengthening of our friendship of group members,” says Larry Moore, who heads the mission trip for the Advent each year. “This bonding also enhances our commitment to the Church of the Advent,” he adds. During the early years the group stayed at St. Joseph’s, a dormitory-like, old school building located on St. Mary’s campus near the University. In 2015 volunteers moved to the DuBose Conference Center, an Episcopal retreat, in Monteagle, TN. (DuBose could be described at Tennessee’s version of Kanuga.) Participants pay their costs for room and board. The group usually comprises 10-12 people, more or less. Some are even graduates of Sewanee, happily returning to visit, and reminiscing at their alma mater. Lindsey Little and Rick Dent, long-time missioners, are graduates. Also, the late Charles Minch, the trip’s original leader and organizer, attended the University of the South in a cooperative engineering major with Georgia Tech. CMT’s earlier yearsThe Advent group started going to Sewanee in 1995 as an adult-youth group, with a team average of 25. It has since evolved into an all-adult trip. Each year the Advent’s team returns with both newcomers and regulars. Over the years the Advent group has been fortunate to have team members with knowledge, experience, and training in construction to direct the group’s efforts: for example, Lindsey Little and Parker Champion, building contractors, and Randy Hurteau, a structural engineer. Others who regularly make the trip, such as Bob Page, work each week on local Habitat for Humanity projects. Most of members have the ability to follow directions well. Mickey Suarez, member of the Otey Parish in Sewanee, is the on-site coordinator for Housing Sewanee and is also a retired engineer.A typical workday begins before breakfast with a devotional or a Morning Prayer service conducted by one or several of the attendees. Participants head to the work site(s) by 8 a.m. and work until around 5 p.m. The group breaks for lunch, which usually means a trip to Sewanee’s wonderful cafeteria—numerous food stations offering a huge selection of lunch items, including decadent desserts! Daily quitting time means shower time, followed by a much-anticipated debriefing—with snacks—and then on the one of the several local restaurants for supper. Yes—we eat well! To close the day, two members conduct the evening devotion service. Participants often talk about the day’s job and the hope they are giving to those who will be living in the house under construction or renovation. The feeling is GOOD! The night’s sleep—Heavenly!
