Assembly (Middle School)

Dear Parents, Staff and Students

Our assembly on Tuesday captured our rich and diverse education at Mt St Michael’s.

The opening prayer was centered on Reconciliation with anniversaries of the “Bringing Them Home” report and National Sorry Day occurring last Thursday. Reflections will culminate in our concluding liturgy at the end of Term 2 reinforcing our commitment to Reconciliation and building positive relationships with Indigenous Australians.

In our assembly we congratulated the MSM Cross Country team for their achievements in competing in the CaSSSA Cup at Limestone Park. Our Sports Captains, Lily Collier and Emily Trestrail and Cross Country Captain Olivia Humphreys spoke very well and captured our pride in the team, not only for their performance on the day, but also for their commitment to training which included running up the Alderley hills to Banks Street.

Other highlights of the assembly were: Humanities Week with multiple engaging activities and competitions; the extraordinary Writers Camp reflections accompanied by student readings of their work with thanks to Mrs Bentley and her team; Year 8 Mindfulness learning activities and Matheletes who achieved excellence in a Mathematics competition alongside the highest performing Maths students in the State. Our Cultural Leaders, Sarah Doyle and Ally McDonough captured the audience in the final segment with their joy and exuberance of all that is happening in the Arts.

Our Student Leaders are certainly finding their voice as we come to the half way point of the year providing positive and affirming leadership. Congratulations to our Student Leaders.

Last Thursday afternoon we had a small but memorable celebration in the Mary Aikenhead Chapel, launching ‘Voices from the Heart’. This book is a collection of prayers and reflections for a calendar year, written by staff affiliated with Mary Aikenhead Ministries and the Sisters of Charity. In

the foreward of this book David Robinson, Chair of the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries writes:

“At the centre of these conversations is the quiet and yet insistent voice of God calling us to our true vocation, to be people alive with the joy of the Gospel and filled with the Holy Spirit.”

It is a truly beautiful book which will be given as a gift to members of our community. You will hear more about this later in the year.

Thursday was an important day for another very different reason. It was the last event that Sr Margaret Mines attended as part of the residential community of the College. Sr Margaret has moved to independent living in the Mary Aikenhead Ministries complex in Enoggera where Sr Carmel Coyle also resides. Sr Margaret’s departure marks the end of the Sisters of Charity’s presence on this site in Ashgrove since 1925. We will have a celebratory liturgy to commemorate this significant occasion for the Sisters of Charity in Term 3. The Sisters will continue to have a presence at our ceremonies and important occasions.

This coming weekend Mt St Michael’s College is hosting delegates comprising the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries, Board Directors, Principals and members of College Leadership Teams from the four Mary Aikenhead Education colleges and members of the Education Council, for an Education Symposium with the theme: ‘Mission, Culture and Identity’. As the host College we are pleased to showcase and utilize our fine facilities particularly the Mary Aikenhead Centre and Ionian Centre. I know that many delegates are keen to see our new Arts Precinct and the refurbished Middle School learning area. As part of the conference I will be giving a presentation titled ‘Growing Inspiring and Productive Cultures in our Colleges’.

As we move into the last weeks of the term, we are fully engaged with end of semester assessment and the reporting processes which will bring a conclusion to a very productive semester.

Sincerely

Alison TerreyPrincipal

Congratulations

The CaSSSA Cross Country was held last Thursday May 26 at Ipswich in extremely tough conditions. The MSM team finished 5th overall on what was a hot and draining day at the challenging Limestone Park course.

Congratulations to the team on a great season with many notable achievements: the personal best times achieved; the early morning training sessions; the annual Burleigh Mountain challenge and the improvement in team performance at the lead up meets. Thank you to our Cross Country captain Olivia Humphreys for her leadership throughout the season.

The team results from the CaSSSA Cup were: 12 Years – 7th 13 Years – 5th 14 Years – 5th 15 Years – 7th 16 Years – 5th 19 Years – 6th % Cup – 5th Overall CaSSSA Cross Country Cup – 5th

Year 12 students, Jade Jennison and Elizabeth McLean, had their final photography exhibition for TAFE. The exhibition, attended by Mrs Correia and Mrs Desailly, marked the culmination of their eighteen month course. The standard of their portfolios was exceptionally high, both students being given a silver award by a representative from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. The accompanying picture is one of Jade’s award winning photographs.

Students who competed at the 2016 Met North School Sport Cross Country trials. Sophie Lamers finished 5th in the 13 Years race to qualify for the Met North team. Georgia Blasl (13 Years) placed 37th. Sophie Hynes placed 8th in the 15 Years race and is a reserve for the Met North team.

Year 9 and Year 11 debating teams both had wins in the first set of Round 4 debates. The Year 9s argued against abolition of penalty rates while the Year 11s won their short preparation debate on the topic ‘That we should ban students who are not fully vaccinated from attending government schools’. The Year 9 team is undefeated in the preliminary rounds and has a berth into the finals rounds (hopefully a bye in the first round); while the Year 11s won two out of four of their debates so may just miss out on the finals.

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2016.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2015 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]
