Lieutenant Governor Greeting: Hello everybody! It’s that time again that I know you all look forward to. Newsletter time! Anyways, just a reminder my name is Victoria Clabeaux and most importantly your Lieutenant Governor for the 2012-2013 service year. As you know I was unable to have a divisional meeting before the end of the school year, but don’t worry, we will be having one soon enough. As I said in the last newsletter, I really want to do more things as a division this year. I already have thought of some ideas and if you have any let me know! Remember, summertime is one of the best times of year to get out and volunteer. The weather is wonderful, so why not help out around the community, doing yard work or helping clean up local parks? I hope to see you all soon and that you all have a great summer. Good Luck to any of you who have exams!!

Upcoming Events: Summer is the time of year for everyone to bond and get to know each other. In order to do this, I am planning a divisional picnic for Key Club, Circle-K and the Kiwanis Clubs. There will be more information on this soon so keep an eye out for it on the divisional group. Also, there is a walk for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) August 4 in Grand Island. On September 22, there is an Alzheimer’s walk. As you should know, The Alzheimer Association is one of our district charities this year and it would really be great if we could get a lot of people to participate in the walk and make it a success!

Senior Farewell:
When I was a sophomore at West Senior High School, I decided to join Key Club after being introduced to it by a few of my friends. I remember going to the first meeting and I was still very unsure of what exactly I was doing, but I am really glad that I stuck with it. I had a great time with all of my friends, while helping out the local community. Through activities like the Kiwanis Haunted House, trying to scare the little kids, and at our Relay for Life booth, I always had a great time. As a senior, I took the next step and I became an officer for our school club. I got to help the other officers decide what kinds of cool and new activities we could do. We came up with some new and interesting ideas like movie nights at the school and having productive meetings where we made whatever we would need to for upcoming service projects. I even got to go to the Leadership Training Conference and see what other Key Club’s across the state and even in our community were doing, giving us even more fun ways to improve the club. I would never change my choice to be involved in Key Club, it was a life changing experience and I met so many new people that I otherwise would have never known. I am sad to be leaving the Key Club family, but I do look forward to joining Circle K in college. All you Key Clubbers out there continue doing what you do to keep Key Club so awesome! -Megan Gerken
Major Emphasis Project: The current major emphasis project is “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” This year, I would like it if I could get everyone in our division to participate in International projects and really make a difference. Some possible ways we could all contribute to the major emphasis project would be serving the international charities. These include UNICEF, March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network and the ELIMINATE Project. We can easily hold fundraisers to help raise money or even participate in walks around our area. It is extremely important that we as key clubbers join together and help serve these international organizations. The more we fundraise, the more impact as a district we can make.

KEY CLUB MISSION Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS and PROGRAMS To all members of the mighty New York District Key Club: The International Projects Committee for the 2012 – 2013 service year is up and running. The three district projects for this year are March of Dimes, UNICEF, and The Children’s Miracle Network. This year the district is striving for bigger and better things, therefore each key clubber must put both feet forward in conducting as much service towards these charities as possible to not only meet, but to surpass the district goals. March of Dimes is an amazing organization that has a mission of preventing premature birth, birth defects, infant mortality and improving the overall health of all babies. Composed of many volunteers, researchers, educators, outreach workers, and advocates, they who work together to carry out their mission of March of Dimes through community services, education, advocacy, and research to save babies’ lives. The district goal for March of Dimes is $15,000 as well as 15,000 service hours UNICEF is an international organization that is even mandated by the United Nations to advocate for the protection of Children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This includes child survival and development, providing basic education with gender equality, providing treatment to HIV/AIDS infected children, and to better a policy of advocacy and partnership. The entirety of this organization is based on good practices and developing a relationship not only with the people they are helping but also the volunteers and donors. The district goal for UNICEF is $50,000 as well as 25,000 service hours The Children’s Miracle Network is a international organization with an outstanding mission. Their goal is to actively supply and improve the health care for millions of young individuals much like yourselves, all around the world. By generating funds and awareness, the Children’s Miracle Network is now in over 170 hospitals nationwide. In generating not only hours of service but also donations you are impacting young lives who are battling every type of childhood illness and injury by giving them health and happiness. The district goal for the Children’s Miracle Network is $15,000 as well as 10,000 service hours. For all three of the above charities it is up to the mighty key clubbers of the New York District to come forth and provide as much service as possible. The service ideas are endless! Some examples of Ideas are as follows… •Walk/Run •UNICEF Boxes •School wide Penny Wars oPossible include a battle against the classes for an added excitement •Bake Sales •BB Q’s/Parties •Amazing Race style Contest oDifferent challenges at different locations either in a central part of town or inside your school to have teams race to the finish line. oGet teachers involved •Talk to local businesses and ask them to set up days where some of their commissions go the your local key club •Other events such as… oIce Skating oBowling oMovie night oGame night Yours in Service, Alex Mandriota International projects and Programs committee Chair
About Me: In my last newsletter I gave you a brief, formal introduction of myself. Here, is an opportunity for me to be less formal and let you get to know me a little better. First, this will be my third year in Key Club and I am super excited for it! I have two favorite animals, you probably wouldn’t expect because they are unusual; Sloths and turtles. My absolute favorite color is orange. In the fall, I enjoy playing field hockey on my school’s team. I play defense mainly, and occasionally I will play goalie. I’ve been playing field hockey since I was in seventh grade. One of my favorite foods is pasta, probably because I am Italian. One of my goals this year is to make our division better than it has been these past few years.
International Convention: In a little less than two weeks, on July 1, the district board and myself will be on our way to Orlando, Florida for ICON (International Convention) ICON is similar to our district convention, but every Key Club district throughout the word is invited to come. I am so excited and I cannot wait for ICON. Getting to meet new people from all over is truly an amazing experience. Plus, there is quality bonding time for the whole New York District as well. The official start date for ICON is July 4 and I expect to learn a lot of stuff that will help make this year run smoothly. There are going to be several workshops available to attend and there are dances. I already have a feeling that leaving on July 8 is going to be hard because we will be leaving all the new friends that we will make throughout our stay.
