PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL EXCURSIONS

It is College policy that students will only be permitted to participate in school excursions if correct uniform is being worn and all expenses relating to the excursion have been paid in advance. Work Experience 15 June – 19 June, 2009

Work Experience is a great opportunity for students as it provides an opportunity for students to explore possible career options. It can increase their self understanding, independence and self-confi dence and motivate them to continue studying and go on to tertiary or further education and training. For these reasons, it is essential that all year 10 students fi nd suitable work placements. Many of our Year 10 students have been busy trying to organise a work placement, yet many students are fi nding it diffi cult. If any parents or friends could assist the college in off ering placements it would be greatly appreciated.

The Grade 6’s set off to the Melbourne Electoral offi ce on the 13th of May. They were met by their guide Michael, who fi rstly explained about the way the government operates in Australia. Secondly, the students were given the opportunity to type letters to the Members of Parliament, listen to speeches by great orators, take part in a quiz and check the electoral register. Lastly, the students’ role played an election where the candidates were diff erent types of chocolates. The students went through all the steps just as in a real election. The most popular chocolate bar was Crunchie© who won the election.

The students then walked to the City Museum where they were taken on a tour of the gold vaults where gold was stored in the olden days. We sat in the room where the Governor holds weekly meetings with the cabinet members. The rooms had double doors so that secret business could be discussed. We also saw early 1900’s clothing and other equipment that were used by people in that era.

The students had a chance to purchase items from the gift shop before having lunch in the Treasury Gardens and performing the Dhuhr salah in the park. Alhamdullilah the students had a wonderful learning experience and were brought back safely to school.

Grade 5 Excursion to Narana CreationsIt was a Thursday morning (4th June) when the Grade 5’s set off on their journey to Geelong to discover the history of the Indigenous people of Australia. After an hour on the bus, the Students fi nally arrived at the Aboriginal center where we all had morning tea and stretched our legs a bit. Our guide, Kristy led us to a meeting place where she explained about the history of the Aborigines and their rich culture. We saw a lot of tools and weapons that they had used to obtain food with. The walls of the rooms had many beautiful Aboriginal paintings that were very symbolic. The students were enthralled by how the Aborigines had a great respect for their land and that before the British came, the diff erent tribes were already occupying diff erent areas of Australia. Kristy told us that she belonged to the Wurundgeri tribe and her totem was the Kangaroo. Many questions later, we made our way to the gardens to a get hands on demonstration on throwing a returnable boomerang. Most of the students really enjoyed this activity as they got the opportunity to throw one themselves.

While some students went to the gift shop, others fed the emus and then we all learnt about the making and playing of a didgeridoo. Although it looked easy, it takes a lot of practise to master it. At the end of the show, Busra Turgut on behalf of the Grade 5’s thanked the staff for organizing a very informative program. Alhamdullilah, the students then carried out their wudu and the Dhuhr prayer was performed in Jama’ah. We had our lunch and the students played a game of tiggy before getting on the bus for the journey back to school. All the students and teacher were tired but happy that they had a wonderful experience at Narana Creations.
