Optimizing Production in the Summer Months: As producers are aware, under-production can be an issue during the summer months. It is not only costly to individual

producers, but it also results in significant costs and losses to stakeholders throughout the supply chain.

Alberta’s quota utilization has improved significantly, and we encourage producers to take all measures during the

summer months to maintain this level of production performance.

What can you as a producer do?

• Work with your Processor/Hatchery to achieve full utilization through planning placements, target weights, and projected mortality.

• Maintain close communication with your processor’s field service personnel to ensure your flock is on-track to meeting target weights and projected mortality.

• Report any abnormal conditions to your processor’s field service personnel and veterinarian immediately.

• Leasing within 35 days of flock placement is a tool available to producers to ensure 100% of kilograms are produced.

Review of Specialty Chicken Lease Program Under Alberta Chicken Producers’ Marketing Regulation, section 41.5(10), a review of the Specialty Chicken Lease

Program is to be conducted after the program has been in effect for three years. As the program has now been in

operation for three years, a review will be conducted by the Board over the next six months and a report will be

presented at ACP’s 2019 Annual General Meeting. The Board welcomes feedback; and, should you have any questions

or wish to provide feedback, please contact Karen Kirkwood at [email protected].

IMPORTANT NEWS FOR PRODUCERS – Changes Effective December 1, 2018 Important Changes Coming to the Dispensing of Prescription Only Antimicrobials - Facts you need to know. Please see the three documents below explaining important changes coming under federal legislation that impact

prescriptions for antimicrobials used in the livestock industry. More information will be provided to producers in the

weeks and months ahead. In the interim, please feel free to contact Karen Kirkwood if you have any questions.

CFC Lobby Day CFC held its Lobby Day in Ottawa on May 29, 2018. Jason Born, Dennis Steinwand, Karen Kirkwood and Kerry Towle

(Sofina Foods) met with thirteen Members of Parliament. It was a successful day of meetings, followed by a CFC

Reception which drew a large contingent of MPs, including our Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay. The

event yet again proved to be an effective means for the chicken industry to reinforce the importance of supply

management with our federal elected officials.

New Quality Brooding Workshops After a successful Quality Brooding Workshop in Lethbridge last year, we are planning to have additional workshops in

2018. One is set for the Edmonton area and the second will take place in Southern Alberta. The first workshop will take

place in Edmonton at the Poultry Research Centre. Final dates and registration information will be announced soon!

When it comes to successful brooding, it is not one size fits all. This is an excellent chance for both new and existing

producers to come out and learn the most recent information we have on the needs of the modern broiler and to

discuss issues we see on-farm. As a group of producers, vets, processor staff, and industry experts, we will explore what

works and what doesn’t work when it comes to maximizing flock growth, health, and welfare in this practical

workshop.

The workshops will be led by instructors that understand the practical importance of the links between bird health,

biology, genetics, management, and barn results. We will discuss ideal barn preparation, the key components of

brooding management, identifying sick birds, the flock health and economic impact of a decision to cull specific birds,

and more!

We will discuss potential health issues that can appear soon after flock placement and how to recognize them.

We will go into the barn to discuss barn preparation and tools to measure your environmental conditions.

We will hear first-hand accounts of what works and doesn’t work in the field.

We will learn to assess external chick quality and how this relates to internal conditions of chicks.

Poultry Drinking Water Sanitation: Importance and Options Water quality in Alberta varies all over the Province and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to treatment of water you

are providing to your broilers. How do you know if your methods are working? What can you learn by comparing water

quality measurements both where the water enters the barn and at the end of the water line? In the attached article,

Maharjan and Watkins explore these issues and more! To read the practical questions and discussion about the article,

you can view the full article on the Engormix Poultry Industry website here:

Stollery Children’s Hospital – Teddy Bear Fun Run and Walk On Saturday May 12, Alberta Chicken

Producers had the opportunity to engage

with the public at the Stollery Children's

Hospital Teddy Bear Fun Run and Walk. Our

enthusiastic volunteers and their children

handed out approximately 1,500 chicken

wraps to participants. As well, they handed

out informative brochures and some of our

signature Chicken Pops!

A HUGE thank you goes to Tara DeVries and Jacob Middelkamp for their hard work in ensuring the event went off

without a hitch.

Edmonton STARS Air Ambulance Presentation At the Annual General Meeting Banquet held on February 27, 2018, an auction was held with the proceeds going to

STARS Air Ambulance. The auction was a huge success and on April 30, the chairs of the four feather boards were

delighted to present Sabrina Ali, Manager of Events Edmonton, and Barb Atkinson, STARS Air Ambulance nurse, with a

cheque for $2,550.00.

Amazing Agriculture Edmonton

From May 1-3, 2018 Tara DeVries represented Alberta Chicken Producers at Amazing Agriculture in Edmonton. Amazing

Agriculture is a free educational experience produced by Northlands that is designed to teach Grade Four students

from the greater Edmonton area about our province’s vibrant agricultural industry. Through an interactive learning

station, Tara taught the students about broiler chickens in Alberta.

Alberta Open Farm Days Alberta Open Farm Days is a collaborative, province-wide, two-

day event that gives Albertans an opportunity to experience

the farm and understand where their food comes from. It is a

backstage pass to meet the farmer, experience Ag-tourism in

Alberta and taste local foods direct from the producer.

In Alberta, Open Farm Day will be held on August 18-19, 2018.

Our goal is to showcase Alberta’s agriculture and tourism

industry in a fun, engaging and meaningful manner to

participants of all ages.
