CONSIDERING GOING TO A CHRISTIAN CAMP THIS SUMMER? St. Matthews would like to be a partner with you. We are blessed with campership money to encourage youth to attend a place like Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center (LOMC), Lutherdale or a similar camp. Contact the office for information.

W ars and issues of violence fill our newspapers, social media, smart phones and TV screens. This new age of constant “live” coverage can

consume us and leave us filled with fear and anxiety. You might say it is hard not to be troubled. If I then say to you, “Focus on the Good News of Jesus Christ. Do not be alarmed!” — you might say, “But, Pastor, just look and listen... the violence, the shootings!” Yet, the words “do not be alarmed” are not mine. It is Jesus who said, “Do not be alarmed… this is but the beginning of the birth pangs.”

Jesus’ own Mother might even question this advice. Jesus says “do not be alarmed” just after he triumphantly entered Jerusalem on what we now call “Palm Sunday.” Jesus knows he is facing his own horrific death on a cross (for our sins) on what we now call “Good Friday.” Mary recalls the “birth pangs” that once came in a stable in Bethlehem while she now watches her son on Good Friday, the words “do not be alarmed” might seem inappropriate. Instead she likely yearns for words of life, of comfort, of hope.

The hymn I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry has words of comfort that seem to come from

our Lord, “When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I”ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise.” That surprise of eternal life is like the warmth of a new born child, but first there is the painful experience of birth pangs. Today, we may feel financial, economic, societal, and political “birth pangs,” but we do have the Good News and a strong future.

Despite trauma and turmoil we have the promise of new life beyond our daily problems and even the tomb. This is why Jesus could face the true “rumors” of his own death on Good Friday. (He knew there is new life in the Easter resurrection!) This is why we have comfort and hope in the very midst of our fears and troubles, the violence and natural disasters, the economic and financial concerns, and the wars and rumors of wars. We have new life! Jesus confidently commands you and me, “Do not be alarmed; don’t be led astray.” Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we too have the promise of our own eternal “surprise,” which is new life in Jesus, which begins today! Alleluia!

Pastor Scott Schmidt

A Note from Pastor Scott Schmidt: As [Jesus] came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and

what large buildings!" Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left

here upon another; all will be thrown down. " When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the

temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be

the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware

that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many

astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is

still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes

in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. Mark 13:1-8

Lutheran World Relief

Summer is upon us and time to get to work on Lutheran World Relief donations for 2018. We had a successful year in 2017 with 129 school kits, 60 baby kits, 20 fabric kits and 37 personal care kits as well as soap and a monetary gift of $500+ toward shipping. July & August are always our months for school kit collection. June would be a good month to concentrate on making personal care kits. Of course we are happy to receive them and soap anytime. Personal care kits include: 1 bath towel (dark color preferred), 2 bath size bars of soap, one adult toothbrush, one sturdy comb and one metal nail clipper. We will put a list on the entrance table. There is always a need for these kits with so many natural disasters. If you don't have a chance to make an entire kit but run on to bargains of any of the items just put them in the LWR box and we will work at making up the kits. Our quilters are busy and have a goodly number completed. We would love to have some new faces join us. You need not be a sewer, there are many jobs for you to do. We also are asking for flannel material like old sheets, etc. We need them for making diapers for the baby care kits.

"LWR continues to be deeply thankful for the work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ as lived out through your Congregation"
