Dear members of our school community, If you enter our school, you will see a lot of plants, tomatoes, salad and other vegetables, that are being used to create an understanding about life on earth. Even though we have only limited space to use, the interest of our pupils from Pre Kindergarten up to grade 6 jus?fies the use of every single square cen?metre. Through our PYP coordinator who put much effort in this garden, our ‘planta?on’ provides experiences that are best integrated into our PYP Curriculum and the units of inquiry. As a result of Grade 5/6’s exhibi?on, we now have a pond which soon will become the home for some fish and fresh water plants. We also have a rainwater collec?on system, that helps to develop an understanding about using limited resources. It makes sense for an eco friendly school to help crea?ng an holis?c understanding about all aspects of life. !On a related topic we are proud of winning the Environmental Architecture Award for 2013 given by the Japan Ins(tute of Architects which demonstrates clearly, there is a balance between our school building and our teaching and learning. Check out the official link: hVp://goo.gl/Bdhrin. It is not only the cozy atmosphere, our school building inspires us to be responsible and open minded ci?zens. !Whenever we have student assembly on the last Wednesday of each month and we hand out Learners Profile awards to the students, we can see the IB PYP program works for the best of our pupils. In a way the student assembly has progressed toward a student and parent assembly. It shows the close link between parents and the school and it demonstrates a strong interest of our parents in the students academic progress. !I do not need to write about the many meaningful events in the school because you can read about in this newsleVer and, of course, in our blogs. If you want to find out what is going in our school, it is best to have a look at our blogs. Since we have access to the numbers of visitors on our webpage, we can see, there is a strong interest in visi?ng our school. With our new website we have aVracted almost 11000 unique visitors!!!. We again had an Open day with a significant number of visitors. What does it tell us? We are providing an educa?on in an aVrac?ve school environment that is highly supported by parents and that draws widespread aVen?on. !What else is new: We now have a Sibling discount for the 2014/2015 year offering 12% to the second child and 15% for the 3rd child and 20% for the 4th child joining our school. More details can !As you can see the Deutsche Schule Kobe/European School makes a difference!!! !I wish you a good ?me with enough heat to feel warm and enough coolness to feel comfortable. Hello! My name is Lee Hanae Ung, and I am
happy to be joining the Deutsche Schule Kobe as a Pre-
Kindergarten assistant teacher! I was born and raised in Los Angeles,
California and have lived in Boston, Sardinia (Italy), and Japan over the course of my
life. I am half Japanese, half Chinese, and all-American. My hobbies include Japanese Tea
Ceremony, graphic design, and photography.
I obtained my teaching certification in Elementary Education, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in
Biology, from Wellesley College in 2010. Since then I have been teaching at various levels from
Kindergarten to high school in the United States and Japan. I believe that children thrive in
supportive, active inquiry-based learning environments, and I am excited to devote my
energy towards nurturing the young minds at DESK. I am honored to join the
wonderful community here! Please come greet me, if you see me
around!
Hello there, my name is Aya Onishi. I will be a teacher starting at your school
next year and I am looking forward very much to meeting all of you. !
I am a primary school teacher with experience teaching in Australia and Indonesia. I have visited many different countries so far. Learning about other countries and its people are some of the things I enjoy doing in my spare time. !
I am Japanese by heritage but, I have been living in Australia since I was little. So I have been lucky to have both Japanese and Australian cultural influences to shape me
into the person that I am today. Some Fast Facts: I cannot live without….Coffee! I am currently learning….How to
juggle! I really enjoy….Teaching and learning new things! I still need to work on…Remembering kanji! I wish I could…Speak many different languages !

This months assembly was hosted by grade 1 and 2. After a lot of practice, they finally got to perform their song
about keeping nature clean and caring for our environment this Wednesday. Their wonderful performance was followed
by a presentation of comics they created themselves. The kids learned a lot in their unit of inquiry and had a lot of fun
spreading the message of taking care of the environment. Check the blog post to see the video: http://goo.gl/2Zbyog

Class Activities - Pre school !
The students of Pre
School started recently a new unit.
During "How we organise ourselves" they
learn how communities make efforts to create
transportation systems that meet their needs. The
necessity of time becomes more and more
important. So learning the clock helps our
students to organise themselves more
effectively.

!
The Soccer World Championships in Brazil are just around the corner. Because of that we decided to have our own World
Championships in Soccer during P.E.. The students of Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 voted for 6 countries they would like to
represent. Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Mexico competed against each other. Finally Germany
won. Hopefully it's a good omen for the tournament in Brazil.

My mo?va?on for spending one year in Japan as part of a volunteer service was to get to know Japan from a perspec?ve that is different from the one I have had when I came to Japan before as a tourist. I wanted to get to know as much about Japanese culture, language and daily life as possible. In order to acquire this kind of experiences, I decided to ask the families of our school to host me for the ?me of my volunteer service. I was lucky enough to receive very kind replies. I have stayed with two families during the course of my volunteer service. From December of last year un?l the end of March I have stayed with Ryusei`s (ES 3) family. Aherwards I moved Jun`s (EKG) family with which I will stay un?l I return to Germany in early July.
The experiences I have made within the months that I have stayed with these families are priceless. I really felt at home at both places and was able to bond with many people. What I enjoyed much were the conversa?ons over the dinner table and elsewhere. It was very interes?ng to find the similari?es and differences of German and Japanese (and Korean) culture and habits. That way, my host families and I have both learned much about previously only vaguely known socie?es and ways of living. Of course, I also enjoyed being with the kids a lot. It`s so much fun to play hide and seek with Ryusei and his baby sister Sarang and to do stone-‐hopping at the river with Jun. I`m sure the kids enjoyed having me at their houses as well. Since I always spoke either English or German with them, they have certainly improved their language skills because they were now able to use their addi?onal languages outside of school.
Ryusei`s family was able to not only give me an insight into Japanese, but -‐ because of their roots -‐ also into Korean culture. I felt very comfortable with them right away. There is nothing more cheering then an excited one year old girl gree?ng me with a happy squeak upon arrival at home. Another thing that I`m definitely going to miss when I go back to Germany is the food. Ryusei`s mother is probably the best non-‐professional cook I know!
Jun`s family is very kind and always making sure I feel well. Our trips into the nature and the onsen are always a lot of fun. I will definitely enjoy my last month with them here in Japan a lot, whether it be at a fun road trip, nice BBQ in the garden or just our daily conversa?ons about everything and nothing.
Summed up, I can only say that I`m more than happy to have made the decision to stay with a host family. I now have not only friends in Japan, but also families. I`m sure we will keep in touch and visit. I can only recommend to everyone to get the same experiences!
