JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT 1
For over 50 years, JA Northern Alberta & NWT has inspired and empowered youth in our communities through conversations around work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. We have opened their eyes to explore what is possible as they prepare for what the future holds.
It is no secret that the economy has been tumultuous for many in our community whether you operate in the for profit or not for profit space. This leads to innovation and some-times doing things a little different. 2017/18 has been a year of growth for JA – a remarkable increase in Company Program participants, introduction of the JA Leadership Breakfast, launch of our women in leadership initiative, Leading Ladies, awarding our inaugural JA Innovator Award, expanding partnerships with other youth serving organizations and the list goes on. All of this was possible because of the incredible generosity of our community and we cannot thank you enough.
GIVE THEM THE POWER TO CHANGE THEIR WORLD!

MESSAGEFROM THEPRESIDENT
We are entering an exciting time at JA as we disrupt our organization and look to pivot from an organization that is in the business of delivering programs, to an organization that is also a community connector. We look forward to sharing more details in the coming months and are excited to partner with our JA family on this journey.
Whether you give of your time, talent, or treasure, thank you for inspiring and preparing over 26,000 youth this year to dream big and pursue their passions. With your support, we will continue to empower the future of our youth and economy. Your commitment, support and passion have made all the difference. Thank you!
Jen Panteluk
Thanks to you, the incredible community surrounding JA, we had the privilege of engaging and inspiring over 26,000 kids in the 2017/18 school year. This was possible thanks to our wonderful network of nearly 600 volunteers who lend their expertise and experience throughout the school year, delivering over 1,000 programs to kids in grade 3 through 12. Volunteers bring the ‘real world’ perspective into the classroom that helps to prepare our kids to succeed, as they explore what lies ahead.
May featured our annual Alberta Business Hall of Fame event, where we had the opportunity to celebrate and recognize four incredible business leaders; Jim Carter, Dr. Ray Muzyka, Donald A. Wheaton and Dr. Greg Zeschuk. Each with an impressive list of accomplishments, our guests had the opportunity to hear about their journey through an intimate fire side chat. We also had the opportunity to celebrate our inaugural JA Innovator Award recipient, Angela Santiago for her valuable contributions to our community.

“Junior Achievement is an incredible organization that doesn’t just put a band-aid over a problem, but instead focuses on solutions that can help prevent the problem — financial literacy and business education. This is why I support JA. I want to feel like I am making a difference in a child’s life and in our community.”
Lisa Heerensperger, Program Volunteer

“The single determining factor in my life was Junior Achievement. From it I formed my strongest friendships, and the path of my life was determined. I have spent most of my life self-employed, with the skills and courage I gained at Junior Achievement. Although I attended the program over 40 years ago, you will still find traces of the products I made and the friends I gained all over my house and office! Any person can benefit from this program, whether they get great marks in school, or can barely struggle through, and are failing at “NORMAL” school work. At Junior Achievement ANYONE can shine! I highly recommend this program to every student who wants their life enriched!”

Company Program. Company Program is an exciting intiative run by JA for students in grades 8-12. This program gives students the chance to gain greater insights on the skills and processes that are essential for running a business.
Company Program is a great opportunity for students to create, produce and sell their own products. They are also tasked with establishing, managing and liquidating their very own company within 18 short weeks!
“THE COMPANY PROGRAM HELPED ME IMPROVE AS A PERSON BY TAKING ME OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.” PATRICK CERVANTES, COMPANY PROGRAM STUDENT
