PURPOSE AND WAY OF LIFE

Mere teachings and commands of do’s and don't’s do not form the foundation of good moral charac-ter in a society, because only these things are not sufficient for devel-oping good qualities in human na-ture. The teachings of good con-duct to be fruitful, requires long training and constant watchful-ness.

The training cannot be on the right lines if the example is not shown before the society, because a per-son having a bad moral character cannot leave a good impression on his surroundings.

The best training can be expected only from such a man whose per-sonality, by the force of his moral-ity, would create a sense of admi-ration in the society. The world would spontaneously feel the urge

to follow his footsteps.

For nourishing more and more ex-cellent character among his follow-ers it is necessary that the leader must possess higher and nobler character and attributes than his followers.

The holy Prophet himself was the best example of good moral character. Before advising his fol-lowers to adopt a moral life by giv-ing sermons and counsels, he was sowing the seeds of morality among his followers by actually that kind of life.

Some teachings of the Holy Prophet and extracts from his life regarding morality are given in this edition.

most exalted standard of moral excellence.”

MUSAB BIN UMAIRرضى الله عنهwas a very handsome young man. He was the son of Umair, a wealthy person. He brought up his son in quite a luxuri-ous fashion. Musab enjoyed the best of food, fin-est dresses and the best perfumes. Whenever Mu-sab passed through the streets, dressed in costly clothes and profusely perfumed, the sweet smell scented the atmosphere all around and the people gazed at him with amazement and appreciation. His beauty and charm was the talk of the town.

Due to his charming personality and being a lovely son of wealthy parents, everyone– young or old– had a great regard for him. When he embraced Islam he was given a respectable place in Muslim society . But it was not due to his beauty, charm, good dress or wealth, but due to his piety and fear of God.

Musab accepted Islam at a time when life had been made unbearable for Muslims. When he embraced Islam he was put severe hardships and torture. All the affection of his mother vanished. All the love and care of his father changed into anger and grief. He was turned out of his home. The beauty and charm of his person faded. His parents admonished him. But, when they knew that he was firm, they tied him with ropes and threw him in a dark cell. He was kept in prison for a long time, but his belief in Islam was so firm that the torment of prison did not change his mind. He was no more inclined towards costly cosmetics and perfumes. He sacrificed every-thing and remained steadfast and devoted him-self whole-heartedly to serve the noble cause of Islam.

During the course of time, many people of Madi-na had accepted Islam. They requested the Holy Prophet to send them a preacher for teaching them the fundamentals of Islam. The Holy Prophet selected Musab for this purpose. On reaching Madina, Musab began to perform the duty entrusted to him. He went from door to door to convey to the people the message of Islam. Initially he talked to each person in terms which the person could understand, and then presented to him the message of Islam at the right moment. He recited before the people selected verses of the Holy Quran which had a profound effect on their minds. He had a natural gift of soft speech and people who approached him instantly be-came his friends... One day Musab was explaining

some Islamic principles to a group of Mus-lims. On seeing this an elite of Madina sent Usaid to turn Musab out of there, as he was preaching Islam and turned many persons away from their ancestral faith. Usaid at once took his spear and went to Musab and said fu-riously: “Who has called you here to lead the people astray? If your lives are dear to you, go away from this place at once.” To this Musab replied very gently, “Please sit down and lis-ten to us calmly. If you like what we say, then you may accept it otherwise we shall leave this place.” Usaid stuck his spear in the ground and sat down to listen to what Musab had to say. Musab recited some verses of the Holy Quran. He explained to the audience the identity of Allah as the Creator, the Master and the Merciful, in such an impressive man-ner that in a short time Usaid was filled with the light of faith. Soon after all the inhabitants of Madina except a few, embraced Islam.

Musab was also a brave soldier, a fearless warrior and an able general. It was because of his bravery that the Holy Prophet had en-trusted him with the honour of carrying the banner of war, in the battle of Badr and Uhud. In the battle of Uhud, the nonbelievers attacked the Muslims from the rear and thus disorganized the Muslim army. At that critical time Musab kept the Islamic banner flying high. He attacked the forces of the enemy all alone. He could not think of acting against the order of the Prophet and making a retreat. At that time many nonbelievers attacked the Muslim warrior simultaneously and surround-ed him. There were countless attacks on him by swords and spears. At last he fell a martyr.

After the battle, the Holy Prophet addressed the body of Musab and said; ―When I saw you for the first time in Makkah there was no body more handsome and well-dressed than you. But I see you today your hair uncombed and only a sheet of cloth covers your body.‖ Musab had only a sheet of cloth over his body; if the head was covered the feet were bare and when the feet were covered the head was left bare. At last his head was covered with the shroud cloth and the feet were cov-ered with grass. Such was the shroud of Mu-sab bin Umair رضى الله عنه — the great martyr.

The history of the purpose of ed-

ucation is as old as the history of

the human civilization. But the

system of education has been

changing through ages.

Knowing the purpose of educa-

tion is very important in systema-

tizing the process of education.

Without it education would be-

come a directionless journey.

The purpose of life is to please

our Creator and live being obedi-

ent to Him. When we understand

this purpose of life, then educa-

tion on this lines will help us to

achieve the ultimate purpose of

life.

Education - the process of acquir-

ing knowledge - begins when we

are born and continues throughout

life. For instance, learning to speak

is a basic skill we acquire at an ear-

ly age by imitating and repeating

the sounds produced by the family

members. As we grow older, vari-

ous activities help in increasing our

knowledge. Schools also help in

recognizing and nourishing the tal-

ents and skills that one has and

guide to use to benefit ourselves

and the society on the whole.

Education provides light and

guides towards success.

An ideal education system

Which not only provides „Information‟ but also cre-ates „Human Beings‟.

Which not only enables man to earn money but al-so keeps him active to serve „humanity‟.

Which fulfills the needs of the society…not of the market.

Where the education is not sold as a Commodity‟ but provided easily to all citizens as a „Value‟.

Which makes the students curious to know the “Truth of Life.”

And the most important is that…

Which leads him towards his “Creator.”

T he aspect of life regarding character and morality of the holy Prophetصلى الله عليه وسلمis

undoubtedly more prominent than all other re-formers of the world.

He was a model of his own teachings. What he said before the general public he acted upon. He was the true embodiment of virtues and moral conduct which he preached.

One of the most important aspect of one’s character is that one

should do an act so constantly that it be-comes one’s second nature. The Holy Prophet used to ob-serve this principle in all his actions. He صلى الله عليه وسلم

said: “The acts most pleasing to Allah are those which are done continuously.”

An account from his life displaying his un-paralleled character:

One disbeliever wom-an hated the Prophet

for his message. The Prophet walked down the street

where she lived. She decided that she was go-ing to give him trouble. The woman swept her everyday. She started saving all the garbage, and she threw it on the Prophet whenever he passed her house. Doing this made her feel very good. “Now I have taken revenge for our idols,” she thought.

But she expected Muhammad(صلى الله عليه وسلم)to become angry at what she did. “Perhaps he will shout at me,” she thought, “then people will see Mu-hammad(صلى الله عليه وسلم)getting mad. That will be a great thing.”

However when she threw the garbage on the Prophet, he did not say anything and he just continued on his way.

The disbelievers thought that the Prophet was

too afraid to shout at the woman. They did not realize that he was too gentle to do that.

The Prophet continued to walk down the same street every day. He did not want to dis-appoint the woman. He hoped that Allah would guide her to the truth.

One day as the Prophet walked down the street, there was no garbage. The Prophet was surprised. He asked the people what had happened to the woman. ’She is vey sick.,” they told him. She can’t get up to do her own work.”

The Prophet was sad to hear this. Since it was his habit to visit the sick and pray for the health, he went to the woman’s house right away. People told her that the Prophet had come to visit her. “He has come to show his an-ger,” she thought, “today I’m sick, and I can’t talk back to him.” but she decided to let him come in.

The Prophet entered her house. He looked at the woman kindly. He spoke to her gently and asked how she was. Then he prayed to Allah that she might get well.

The woman was ashamed of what she had done to the Prophet. Now she realized that he was not an ordinary person. Anyone else in his situation would certainly have been happy about her sickness. But the Prophet was so kind that it made him sad to see her suffer.

She now understood that Muhammad(صلى الله عليه وسلم)was Allah’s Prophet. She begged him to forgive her, and she did so with great kindness. The woman who had been Prophet’s enemy and who had thrown garbage on him day after day now accepted Islam!

a pin or tack stuck through the center of the card.

(8) Glue to the wooden block a frame made from three thin wooden strips (see diagram).

(9) Make a small hole in the center of the strip by ham-mering a small nail through it.

(10) Pass a fine thread through this hole and tie a knot in its end.

(11) Tie the other end of the thread to the frame so that the needle hangs centrally over the compass card. The needle should now turn to point approximately north-south.

(12) When the needle has come to rest, rotate the compass card until its north pole lies directly below the red , north seeking pole of the compass needle. The directions north, east, south, and west will now be indicated by the points on the compass card.

Nearby iron or steel objects will tend to attract the compass nee-dle, causing an error called devi-ation. To avoid this error, always ensure that you are well away from metal objects when using the compass for direction find-ing.

Because iron and steel objects deflect the needle, the compass can be used to find such objects buried under the ground.

Centuries ago, ships used primitive compasses. A magnetized needle, placed on a float in a bowl of water, pointed approximately north. The instructions below explain how to make such a compass and how to build an improved version with a suspended needle. You can also use the second type to locate iron or steel objects buried in the ground.

Construction:

(1) Get a metallic needle or cut a strip(8x80mm) metal from a tin can.

(2) Magnetize the needle by re-peatedly stroking it, in one di-rection only , with one pole of a strong magnet.

(3) Cut a thin disk of cork (wooden piece).

(4) Float the cork disk on water in a plastic bowl. Don not use a steel bowl as this will prevent the com-pass from working proper-ly. Place the needle on the cork. The cork should now turn slowly until the needle points approximately, in a north-south direction.

(5) When you have found which end of the needle-points northward, paint it red for identification.

(6) Now use the same needle to make a more elaborate compass. First, make a compass card, as shown in the diagram, from a cardboard.

(7) Fix the card to a wooden block by means of
