INTRODUCTION St Mary’s Catholic College is guided by the Australian Curriculum. In 2018, the Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, History, Science, HPE, LOTE, Design & Technology, The Arts and Digital Technologies follow and adhere to the scope and sequence set out within the Australian Curriculum documents. The Curriculum System at SMCC in Years 9 & 10 is designed to allow all students to choose a program of study which will help them in their future careers, give them a balanced education and cater for their needs, interests and abilities. In Year 9, students at this College are able to select from a wide variety of subject offerings which can lead to a multiplicity of possible study pathways. This handbook gives the information needed for planning a suitable pathway for each student. It is hoped that the opportunity to select a variety of subjects, will enable students to complete Years 9 & 10 successfully with a broad education and the subject base recommended for Years 11 & 12 subjects. Students are encouraged to seek counseling when choosing their subjects.
PLANNING A STUDY PATHWAY When planning a study pathway students and their parents should ensure that: 1 An educational balance is maintained. 2 Selections reflect the student’s interest, abilities and successes in previous
subjects. 3 Recommendations for subjects and consideration of sequential subjects are
taken into account (see Head of Department for clarification). 4 Core requirements are satisfied. 5 Choices are made to suit the individual…not their friends.
UNIT SELECTION PROCEDURES The procedures outlined below are those by which Years 9 & 10 students are allocated to units of study. Normal Procedure: In the June/July holidays the Junior Curriculum Handbook is posted on the school website. Students will complete Webpreferences for subject selection at the start of Term 3. It is very important that students choose wisely because their decisions guide the College in the timetable design; once decisions regarding classes have been made and a timetable has been created, restrictions come into play. Alterations: The units to which a student has been allocated may be altered early in a new semester because some classes may be too small to be viable, some classes may be too large or some previously unforeseen problem with unit choices may be discovered. Where a student must be moved out of a unit these changes will be kept as insignificant as possible. It should be noted that as long as students and parents are given the freedom to choose units of work there will occasionally be classes which are too big or too small to run and some students must then necessarily be moved. No college can work miracles in this area!
SMCC ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES INTRODUCTION The Mission Statement and the Pastoral Care Policy of the College, together with the Policy Statement from QCAA http://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/snr_qa_mod_a-z.pdf will be reflected in all aspects of the Assignment Procedure. All assessable work is included in the Assessment Procedure. An extended version of these procedures is available on the College website – Curriculum – Subject Information Booklets. When assignments are used they should be part of the teaching – learning process for each subject. Assessment must enhance the student’s learning and understanding. All assessment will be in accordance with relevant college work programs. PRINCIPLES BEHIND THE QCAA LATE AND NON-ASSESSMENT POLICY The QCAA requires that a school policy incorporate the following principles:
• Judgments of student responses to assessment instruments are made using standards associated with exit criteria.
• Procedures are enacted consistently across subjects within the school. • In cases of late submission of student responses to assessment instruments, judgments are based on evidence
available on or before the due date. • In cases of non-submission of student responses to assessment instruments, standards are not awarded when
there is no evidence.
EXTENSIONS • A student may request an extension before the due date. Such extensions will be given, only, when a student
demonstrates that the work in question cannot be handed in on time for reasons beyond his / her control. Any extensions must be approved by the relevant Subject Curriculum Middle Leader.
LATENESS OF ASSESSMENT Management of late submissions of assessment requires positive proactive strategies –
• that are thought out in advance. • that encourage participation and engagement, • and that involve staged or interim completion of tasks prior to the final due date
Judgements of student assessment should be made against the relevant standard descriptors on the criteria sheet. If completed work is not submitted by the due date, a grade will be awarded on evidence of work carried out on assessment to that point in time (drafts). If no evidence has been provided by the final due date, despite opportunities given, then the student will be awarded a NS – non submission - for the task. This will impact on the student’s overall result and could result in their not being credited for the semester unit of work (relevant to Senior). MISSED ASSESSMENT If a student misses an exam/assessment then documentation must be provided. Years 7 - 10 are to provide a letter from parent*. Years 11 -12 must provide a medical certificate or other appropriate documentation (a phone call from parents is not sufficient in most instances). In the case of an adequate reason being provided, an alternative arrangement will be made for access to assessment to occur at the next available time convenient to the subject teacher. *Absences of more than 2 days, due to illness, should provide a medical certificate. ABSENTEEISM DUE TO HOLIDAYS Teachers are not required to make up nor offer alternative arrangements for classwork and/or assessment missed due to holidays or unexplained absences. All teachers make themselves available during term time for lessons to be taught – it is not an expectation of SMCC that teachers provide work for students in these instances. SELECTIVE UPDATING There are a number of situations involving students revisiting semesters and undertaking additional assessment. Students considering selective updating in Senior would need to speak to the relevant Subject Curriculum Middle Leader. AUTHENTICATION OF STUDENT WORK Ensuring student authorship of responses to assessment tasks is required by all syllabuses. In most instances, the school uses ‘Turn it in’ to establish authorship. Any student found to have plagiarised will be given a detention and a letter will be sent home. Their work will be marked on their verified original work only; this could result in no result being awarded if the whole piece of work is plagiarised. If a student was to plagiarise again, a meeting will occur between the student and the Principal and/or Deputy Principal to discuss continued enrolment and consequences regarding their being credited in the subject/s for the appropriate semester.
