Message from the President

Alicia BattlePresident [email protected]

What is so special about the Holiday Season? This question has many answers and most answers will depend on each individual. We are a diverse society, with complex beliefs and values. As I hurry about the community, caught up in the holiday rush, I frequently stop and think of what Christmas/this special season really is. Is it finding the perfect gift for that important friend or relative? Is it decorating your home to look like the magazine photos? Sometimes, it seems like it’s an overwhelming rush to try and get that bargain.

When I feel myself headed in that direction, I stop myself, think about what I’m doing and instead, try to focus on the realization that there are others, some right here in the Athens community, less fortunate than myself, and what their needs and wants are. My wish for them is to enjoy time with friends and family while enjoying the sights and smells of the season without worrying about poverty, hunger, and unemployment.

I feel humbled when I reflect on what the Junior League of Athens – each one of us - has provided for this com-munity. We are an amazing group of women, passionate about serving this community. We give of ourselves to help others … no matter what our beliefs or values. As just one example, if you choose a paper ornament from the JLA ‘Giving Tree’ during our October and November GMM, you helped people in our community this holiday season. For over 8 years, we have given to Joyce Ervin's Open Hearts Center through our annual ‘Giving Tree’. Joyce is just a regular Athens community resident who is not wealthy, but has given her life and home to her fellow Athenians. The Open Hearts Center, a little building attached to her house, is an Athens non-profit organization that provides needy families with basic necessities. A JLA Community Service Award Winner, Joyce offers them food, a shower, clean clothes, toys, and sometimes just a hug or a listening ear. This year, we will give the Open Hearts Center 60 gifts for the many children and mothers who arrived with absolutely nothing.

During this Holiday Season and beyond, how can we continue to give to and sup-port our almost 80 year old organization and even older community?

o Through tackling new projects or reflecting on the outcomes of established projects, o completing community service shifts, o purchasing cookbooks, o donating to our endowment, o decorating and supporting our 174 year old headquarters, finding Taylor Grady House artifacts and do nating them to our Hargrett Library Project,o and inviting friends to become effective members, each of us works towards making a better community, o keeping in mind the many families and individuals struggling that can take comfort in knowing that there are groups and organizations like the Junior League of Athens that can help them make a difference in their lives.

Happy Holiday! Alicia Battle 2014-2015 President

Joyce Ervin’s Open Hearts Center is a char-itable non-profit organization that adopts children & families in need to provide Christ-mas assistance through various sponsors. JLA has created the annual Giving Tree for Open Hearts & this year our members will provide over 54 gifts to a family of 9! A heartfelt thank you to those of you who grabbed a tag off the Giving Tree & purchased a gift to provide through Open Hearts!

At the November GM, we collected 52.58 for Change for Change. That brings our to-tal to $204.39. These funds will be distributed amongst 3 organizations: Athens Area Home-less Shelter, AIDS Athens, and Action Minis-tries. These organizations specifically request-ed funding for transportation to educational classes.

Thank you to the members who donated pa-per products to November’s MADDrive for Ac-tion Ministries.

Several of us have had discussions about what literacy means to you. We have already be-gun collecting books through events like the Book-O-Treat and October’s MADDrive for Athens Area Council on Aging. We’ve orga-nized books for Books For Keeps, read to chil-dren, and promoted awareness of important issues such as poverty, child abuse, domestic violence, and breast cancer. All of these vol-unteer opportunities have provided us with mission moments to empower people & to truly make an impact on the improvement of literacy in Athens. Please check Tuesday Tid-bits & Closerware to sign up & volunteer!

Please remember to bring backpacks & school supplies to the Make A Difference Drive at the January General Meeting benefitting Casa de Amistad. There will be a prize for one member who donates to the MADDrive!

November  4,  2014

Dear  Junior  League  of  Athens  Members,

In  1935,  a  group  of  25  dedicated  women  formed  what  is  now  known  as  The  Junior  League  of  Athens  (Junior  Assembly  1935-‐1980).  Since  the  organization’s  inception,  members  have  worked  tirelessly  to  improve  lives  in  the  communities  in  which  we  live.    The  Junior  League  of  Athens  has  been  instrumental  in  pioneering  local  programs  such  as  Well-‐Baby  Clinic,  Follies,  The  Coffee  Shop  and  Food2Kids  as  well  as  providing  countless  volunteer  hours  and  funds.

When  I  was  elected  President  in  2013,  I  immediately  ran  through  the  Taylor  Grady  House  to  locate  the  many  precious  Assembly  and  League  artifacts  to  begin  planning  for  the  upcoming  years.  While  I  had  to  dig,  bend,  lift  and  even  call  a  few  Sustainers  for  things,  it  was  how  I  fit  into  and  my  personal  connection  to  the  JLA  history  that  made  my  research  so  interesting  and  so  worth  the  effort.  Needless  to  say,  after  a  week  of  research,  I  found  a  great  amount  of  history  that  sparked  a  few  creative  ideas  for  this  year.

One  thing  that  continued  to  be  in  the  back  of  my  mind  was  how  we  can  organize  this  history  before  it  deteriorates  beyond  use  or  is  lost  entirely.    Beyond  the  economic  value  of  our  materials,  there  is  the  no  more  compelling  argument  of  the  value  of  saving  our  historic  documents  and  material  for  future  research  and  discovery  for  the  generations  to  come.

Just  in  this  year,  I  have  had  many  encounters  with  Taylor  Grady  House  and  Junior  League  historical  material  that  have  taught  me  something.  It’s  like  looking  into  a  window  that  few  current  JLA  members  have  witnessed.

In  the  hopes  of  maintaining  our  rich  traditions,  branded  material,  books,  pictures,  and  other  important  documents  of  the  Junior  Assembly  and  the  Junior  League  of  Athens  artifacts,  the  JLA  Board  of  Directors  was  invited  to  tour  the  UGA  Hargrett  Library  by  the  JLA  Hospitality  Committee  and  core  Sustainer  group.

During  this  tour,  we  learned  of  the  wonderful  opportunities  that  we  could  take  advantage  of:

• The  Hargrett  Library  Museum  will  pick  up  all  items  from  the  Taylor  Grady  House.  • A  collection  of  pictures  and  material  can  be  viewed  by  JLA  members  to  identify  artifacts.  • Catalog  JLA  items  on  their  database  for  easy  search.  • Ability  to  host  an  event  for  JLA  members:  A  ‘Showing’.  • Possible  digitizing  our  material.  • No  to  very  low  cost  for  storage  and  administrative  cost.

After  learning  all  that  the  Hargrett  Library  can  offer,  the  2014-‐2015  Board  of  Directors  voted  to  officially  archive  our  materials.      Please  join  the  Board  in  supporting  the  Junior  League  of  Athens  artifact  archiving  project  with  the  University  of  Georgia  Hargrett  Library.  Your  support  is  a  fundamental  facet  to  the  success  of  this  project—it  is  greatly  needed  and  well  appreciated.

With  gratitude  and  service,

Alicia  Battle  2014-‐2015  President

Junior League Journey

At the November General Membership Meeting, I hope you enjoyed hearing about the League’s impact on Kim-berly Liebowitz’s life. It’s always nice to hear another member’s League Journey. And now for our second in-stallment of our Junior League Journeys, this month from Placement Advisor, Pattie Strickland…

Placement

After moving to Athens as an adult, I came to find that meeting new people was difficult outside of work. Thankfully, a co-worker was a Junior League of Athens member and proposed me for membership. I had no idea what would be required, what I would do or what I would learn.

During my Provisional Year, I worked on a Lunch & Learn project focusing on community fundraising. During the provisional class placement fair that spring, I indicated that I was interested in Cookbook and potentially leadership. No one was more surprised than me when I got the call about becoming Cookbook Chair during my first active year. I chaired Cookbook for two years and then moved to the Board as Communications VP. During my fourth and fifth active years, I served as Provisional Co-Chair and Chair, as well as a member of the Nominating Committee. Currently in my sixth active year, I serve as a Board member again as Membership Council VP/Nominating Co-Chair.

During my League experiences, I’ve gone from barely able to speak in front of five people without turning beet red to speaking in front of the entire League membership. I’ve learned the business of Junior League cookbooks and written policies and procedures, strategic plans, ad copy, sales and annual goal plans, agendas, minutes and motions for member votes. I’ve worked with graphic designers, media publications and national distributors. I was scared to death of our new-est members and their potential questions and needs (only to find out I knew more than I thought I did). I’ve learned from and adapted to Closerware, a computer system that I still don’t understand completely.

Most importantly, I’ve learned from other members. I’ve learned that sometimes goals need to adapt to the situation if something isn’t working. I’ve learned that someone always needs to be the devil’s advocate and that my ideas aren’t always the best - that listening to others, understanding the origins of their thoughts and experiences are very important and knowing that decisions and actions must be collaborative for a greater good and improvement for members and League as a whole.

I’ve learned to support my fellow members in their efforts as they’ve supported mine. I’ve learned to be both a cheerlead-er and an understanding ear during well-deserved vent sessions. I’ve met some of Athens’ best community members and have been so excited and proud when “one of mine” excels as a JLA leader.

Each year and each placement adds another intriguing level of skill and opportunity. I’ve learned so much from the past six years and can’t wait for what’s to come in the future!
