Sophomore Year
You covered Habits 1-3: the Private Victory! They are about you, about reaching a state of independence, about self-mastery, about self-esteem.
They are the tree roots hidden below the ground. Although they may not be seen, they are essential for the tree’s survival. Without strong roots, without solid grounding, the tree would not thrive and blossom!
Let’s review Habits 1-3 today.
In short, you’ve got to work on your insides (roots) before you are ready to work on the
outside stuff! (branches)
Self-esteem is developed from a variety of sources.

“Without strong self-esteem, you cannot be a strong sibling, friend, lover, teammate,
coworker, etc.”
Do you agree?Explain!
Question #1
• When you are feeling down and need someone to lift your spirits, someone who truly “gets” you, do you have someone in your life to go to?
• Who is this person? • Explain how they “get” you.
Read “Raising Daughters in a World That Devalues Them.”
With what parts do you agree?Highlight a line(s) that speaks to you.
Habits 1-3 all deal with self-esteem.
Sean Covey says there are 3 Habits you can develop to build up your self-
esteem.
Habit 1: Be Proactive!
Proactive people:Think before they actTake responsibility for their choicesBelieve they can control how they feel and
how they respond to things that happen to them
Are not easily offendedBounce back from adversity
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
• Habit 1 says you are the driver of your life, not the passenger.
• Habit 2 says since you are the driver, decide where you want to go and draw up a map to get there. You don’t need to be really detailed yet, but are you headed in the right direction?
Habit 3: Put First Things First
• Habit 1 says you are the driver of your life.• Habit 2 says decide where you want to go and
draw up a map to get there.• Habit 3 says get there! Don’t let roadblocks
knock you off course.
Look around!Who is a girl who is “getting there”?
What is it about her that makes you see her this way?
Peer Pressure
• Robert Frost wrote, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
The hard moments, the diverging road moments, are those conflicts between doing the right thing and doing the easier thing.
In the movie “Pretty Woman,” Julia Roberts says that she works as a prostitute because growing up it was easier to believe the bad things said to her than to believe the good things. Why?
Discipline
• In the end, it takes discipline to manage your time.
• It takes discipline to overcome your fears.• It takes discipline to suck it up and be strong in
the hard moments and resist peer pressure.
• What will be the rewards of this discipline?
