Annual Report 2014

Celebrating over 60 Years of Excellence

Dear Serra Family,

This past summer I had the opportunity

to spend four days with fifty of our

students. Students who showed true

witness to service, integrity,

humbleness, accountability, leadership,

and faith. In short, they showed a

witness to the gospel. This student

retreat, appropriately named “Called

and Chosen” gathered those who

desired to be the servant leaders of our school. It was during

these days of prayer, reflection, and leadership training that

these young women and men became a powerful witness to why

I came back to catholic school education. More especially, their

witness reminded me that beyond my own sight, it was Christ

who really “called” me to join this family of Cavaliers.

Our school motto, You shall be my witnesses, isn’t just a quaint

bible verse. It really means something, and these students were

a shining example of it.

Serra continues to be this witness to the larger community

providing students from all faiths and backgrounds an

academically challenging and spiritually enriching Catholic

college preparatory education that forms them to become

generous, responsible citizens and leaders.

Our dedicated faculty continues to meet the demands of

effective and innovative teaching through new and exciting

curricula like with our new partnership with Project Lead the

Way which enriches our growing STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Math) program. Our program with El Camino

and AP offerings taught by college professors has also been

expanded to meet the growing needs of our students. The new

renovations to our science labs have provided the necessary

learning environment for real 21st century learning. When you

drop in, don’t be surprised to find our future forensic scientists

in the Principles of Biomedical Science course investigating

crime scenes!

The LIFE team, started at Serra many years ago is still active as

ever attracting over 100 student applications each year. This

team of dedicated student leaders continues to inspire the faith

life on campus and in the greater community.

Under a new director, our athletics program has entered into a

more competitive division this year and look to continue in

Serra’s proud Cavalier tradition.

After 20 years of absence, we are happy to announce the return

of the Marianist Brothers. In the Marianist pedagogical

tradition, “by providing a climate of acceptance, discipline, and

love, the school acts as a ‘second family’, fostering human

grown and maturity. From the norms, beliefs, values, attitudes,

and capabilities of all the people within a school the dynamic

harmony that is a school’s culture emerges. All members of the

school community share the responsibility to create and sustain

an environment in which can flourish beauty, simplicity,

harmony, discipline, and creativity. When this responsibility is

faithfully fulfilled, the result benefits and educates its

participants.” We look forward to sharing in this Marianist

tradition and the mission of education in faith, the mission of

the founder of the Marianists, Blessed William Joseph

Chaminade.

I can assure you, your generosity makes a very concrete

difference in the lives of 550 plus students who attend Serra. No

gift is too small. This annual report bears witness to this

indisputable fact: because you have partnered with Serra High

School and the mission of the Annual Fund, we are able to keep

Serra High School dedicated to the mission of our school. You

shall be my witnesses!

As we continue to celebrate this “Year of Faith” in the Church,

we remember the great faith that thousands have placed in Serra

High School since it began 64 years ago. And each of you, in a

most concrete and real way, is a partner with us in this most

noble mission. The next time you are around school, please

drop in and say hello – I look forward to meeting the rest of our

family.

Siempre Adelante!

Three new science labs are completed in the science wing all

due to the generosity of the John and Dorothy Shea Foundation

and the Daniel Murphy Foundation.. We are reaching out to the

Serra Family to assist us in purchasing the equipment for our

two new programs, California Project Lead the Way and the

STEM Program.

The Ahmanson Foundation provided JSHS with another

blessing this summer. We now have school wide Wi-Fi because

of our partnership.

We are building a strong and goal oriented Alumni Council that

will generate more funds for Tuition Assistance, Capital

Campaign funding, more alumni giving and involvement.

You are investing in students who are graduating in four years

and going on to college as opposed to attending their local

public schools that have a 50% drop out rate. Help us to provide them with a first class education.
