Application Period

• Applicantsmusthaverequiredapplicationitems1-10confirmed120daysbeforethe

dateoftheirdesiredstarttoapply.

• Applicantsshouldsubmittherequiredapplicationitemspriortothe120daydeadlineto

ensuretheirapplicationsmeetthe90daydeadline.

• Applicationssubmittedmorethan365dayspriortothedesiredstartdatewillnotbe

accepted.

Application Requirements

1. Studentsregisteredinacollegeoruniversityandresearchersordoctorsemployedbyare-

searchinstitution.

2. NumberofApplicants

• BetweenApril1,2019-March31,2020JuntendoUniversitywillnotbeabletoaccept

morethan:

• 3studentsfromoneuniversity

• 5studentsfromJuntendoUniversitypartneruniversities.

• Applicationswillbeacceptedintheordertheyaresubmitted.

• JuntendoUniversitywillnotdeclinetoreviewanapplicationsentdirectlyfromanappli-

cantunlesstheuniversityoftheapplicantplanstonominatestudents.

3. LanguageRequirement

• Applicantsenrolled,training,orworkinginaninstitutioninacountrywhereEnglishisthe

officiallanguageareexemptfromthisrequirement.

• ApplicantsenrolledinamedicalschoolinacountrywhereEnglishisnottheofficiallan-

guage,butEnglishisthemediumofcommunicationatthemedicalschoolarenotex-

emptfromthisrequirement.

• Applicantswhomustmeetthelanguagerequirementshouldsubmitoneofthefollowing

tests:

• CambridgeEnglish

• CouncilofEurope’sCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguage(CEFR)

• InternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)

• JapaneseLanguageProficiencyTest(JLPT)

• TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TOEFL)

• Withintheapplicationapplicantsmustsubmitastatementindicatingwhytheyare

applyingtothedepartment(s).Thestatementshouldbearound100wordsand

shouldaboutlist

• Forstudents:thetypesofexperimentstheapplicantisabletocomplete

• Specifictypesofresearchprojectstheapplicanthopestoexperienceinthede-

partment.PleaseseetheShortTermResearchFellowshipDepartmentslinkto

seewhattypeofresearchprojectmaybeavailable.Thestatementhastwomain

purposes:

• Bywritingthestatementyouaretellingthedepartmentyouhaveanunder-

standingofwhatgoesoninthedepartmentandshowingthedepartmentyou

wanttolearnabouttheirfieldofexpertise.

• Byunderstandingwhatthedepartmentfocusesonyoushouldbebetterpre-

paredfortheactualfellowshipinthecaseyouareacceptedbecauseyouwill

havebetterimageofwhatyoumayexperience.

2. PassportCopy

passportnumber,theirpassportexpirationdate,andtheplacethepassportwasis-

• Formedicalstudents:

• Aletterofrecommendationmustbefromafacultymemberatyourmedical

school.

• Medicalstudentsmaysubmitaletterofgoodacademicstandingissuedfrom

theiruniversityregistarasasubstitutefortheenrollmentcertificateandletterof

recommendationifthelettercontainsinformationaboutthestudent’senrollment

statusandacademicachievements.

• Formedicaldoctorsorresidents:

• Aletterofrecommendationmustbefromaseniordoctoratthehealthcareorga-

Application Review Process

• Thetimeeachdepartmenttakestoreviewanapplicationvaries.Somedepartmentsmay

reviewapplicationswithinoneweek.Therearecaseswhereapplicationsmaytakeover

onemonthtoprocess.TheInternationalCenterwillkeeptheapplicantupdatedabout

wheretheirapplicationstands.

• JuntendoUniversitywillnotberesponsibleformeetinganydeadlinesimposedbyan

applicant.

• Applicantswhoseuniversityorresearchfacilityrequiresthemtoreceivealetterofaccep-

tancebeforeadesignatedtimeshouldsubmittheirapplicationwellbeforetheirdead-

line.

• Applicantswhowillbeapplyingwiththeirclassmatesorcolleaguesforafellowshipthat

willtakeplaceoverthesametimeperiodshouldsubmittheirapplicationsonthesame

day.Applicantsshouldlistwhotheyareapplyingwithwhentheysubmittheirapplica-

Time Period, Schedules, and Public Holidays

• ScheduleswillbebasedonMondaytoFridayschedules.

• Applicantsshouldreviewtheacademiccalendartoseeifnationalholidayswilloccur

duringtheirprogram.Fellowshipswillnottakeplaceonpublicholidays.

• Thefollowingextendedpublicholidaysmaypotentiallyaffecttheavailabilityofpro-

grams:

• ManyfacultymemberstakesummervacationsinAugust.Departmentsmayexperience

THINGS TO KNOW PRIOR TO ARRIVAL

Letter of Acceptance & Certificate of Completion

• Acceptedapplicantswillreceivealetterofacceptance.

• Shorttermresearchfellowswhocompletetheprogramwillreceiveacertificateofcom-

pletion.

Short Term Visas

• ShorttermresearchfellowswillneedtoapplyforashorttermvisatoenterJapan.

• Shorttermvisaexemptionsexistfornationalswhosecountrymeetsthequalifications

listedontheMinistryofForeignAffairs(MOFA)website.

• ApplicantswhodonothavevisaexemptionwillneedtogototheJapaneseEmbassyor

Consulateintheircountrytoapplyforavisa.

• Shorttermresearchfellowswhosecountrydoesnothaveavisaexemptionagreement

withJapanmaycontactJUICaboutreceivingthenecessaryshorttermvisaforms.

Housing

• Acceptedapplicantswillreceiveanupdateabouthousingopeningstwomonthsbefore

thestartoftheirprogram.

• DuetoanincreaseinthenumberofapplicantsJuntendoUniversitymaynotbeableto

providehousingtoallapplicants.Applicantsshouldconsiderthepossibilityofhavingto

findinghousingoutsideoftheuniversitybeforeapplying.

• Shorttermresearchfellowsareresponsiblefortheirowntransportationandpersonal

expenses.

Orientation

• TheInternationalCenterconductsanorientationforshorttermresearchfellowsontheir

firstdayinJuntendoUniversityHospital.

Japanese Class

• Shorttermresearchfellowswhoattendtheprogramwillhavetheopportunitytoattend

aJapaneseclass.Theclasswillhelpclinicalobserverslearnbasicgreetingsandaspects

ofJapaneseculture.

Health Care Seminar

• StudentswhoattendtheprogramwillhavetheopportunitytoattendaHealthCareSem-

inarwheretheywillbeabletolearnandtalkabouttheJapanesemedicalsystem.The

classmayincludeJapanesemedicalstudents.

Events

• JUICholdseventsforinternationalstudents,staff,andfaculty.Shorttermresearchfel-

lowsareencouragedtojointheseevents.

• Toviewalistofpreviousinternationalstudentandresearchereventspleasereferonthe

followinglink.
