Oxford College is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for its stu-dents, staff, faculty, and surrounding community. The first step in providing for your safety is to be prepared before an emergency arises. The information that follows is provided for you to review and understand; should an event occur you will have background knowledge to execute the necessary procedures to provide for your own safety. You may also find it useful to refer back to this information during the time of a crisis to assure you are taking the appropriate steps with regard to your particular situation.

What is a Mental Health Crisis?Inamentalhealthcrisis,aperson’sresourcesforcopingmaybeoverwhelmed.Asa result, the person may become disoriented, nonfunctional, or attempt harm to self orothers.AllsuicidethreatsorattemptsshouldbereportedtotheEmoryPolicesothat proper procedures may be followed to ensure the safety of those involved.

What is it?TheEmoryEmergencyNotificationprogramisamultimodalsystemforalertingstudents, staff, faculty, and visitors of an emergency on or near the Oxford College campus.

How can I receive a text message?StudentsandstaffcanaccesstheEmergencyAlertInformationpagebyloggingintoOPUSorPeopleSoft.Besuretoupdateyourinformationshouldyouremergencycontact information change.

What if I forget to update?EachsemesterstudentsloggingintoOPUSwillbeautomaticallypromptedtoviewand update emergency contact information. Faculty and staff will receive a reminder during open enrollment.

Monthly TestingOutdoorsirens,thepublicaddresssystem,ande-NotifytextmessageswillbetestedatnoononthefirstWednesdayofeachmonth.Ifweatherisquestionable,thetestwillbepostponedtothefollowingWednesdayatnoon;ifweatherisstillquestion-able, the test will be cancelled for the month.

NewtonCountyalsomaintainsanemergencysirensystem.Thissystemistestedevery Wednesday at noon and can be heard on the Oxford College campus.

What should I do if I hear a siren or receive a notification?Sirensaremeanttoalertindividualsoutsideandrarelycanbeheardinside.Beawareofyoursurroundingsandtakeactiontoprovideforyoursafety.Share theinformationwithothersaroundyouwhomaynothaveheardthesiren.Ifyouneedmoreinformation,logontoOxford’sEmergencyAnnouncementsatwww.oxford.emory.edu or tune to your local television or radio station.

Messages(alerts)receivedthroughtheEmoryEmergencyNotificationSystem arebriefandlimitedto140characters.Typically,thealertswillprovideabrief description of the situation as well as simple instructions and guidance. “Shelterinplace”isagenerictermmeaningstayinasafeplace.Ifyouareoutside,go into the closest building to avoid possible danger.

Althoughthebasicconceptofshelteringinplaceremainsthesame,therearesmalldifferences in the specific actions to be taken for different types of emergencies. Everyemergencyisdifferent,soitisbesttouseyourjudgmentandintuitionbasedon the information that is provided and your current circumstances and location.

Severe WeatherMovetothelowestlevelofabuilding,unlessfloodingisevident,inaninteriorroomor hallway, away from windows.

Outdoor Hazardous Material/Chemical AgentsIntheeventofachemicalaccidentthatmaybeoccurringoutdoors,remaininsideandmovetothehighestlevelofthebuilding.Closealldoorsandwindows.Avoidusing the elevator.

InNewtonCounty,severeweatheriscommon;damagingthunderstormwinds,large hail, tornadoes, and in the winter months, ice may effect utilities or highways. TheriskofatornadostrikingtheOxfordcommunityislow,butitsconsequencecanbecatastrophic.Itiscriticaltobeprepared.

Tornado WatchConditionsarefavorableforthedevelopmentofatornado.Beawareofyour surroundings, and be alert, should the watch be upgraded to a warning.

Tornado WarningAtornadohasbeenspottedorindicatedbyradarintheaffectedarea.Actionshouldbe taken to ensure your safety.

IfatornadowarningisissuedforportionsofDeKalborNewtoncounties,whichmayimpacttheEmory/Oxfordcampus,outdoorsirens,andemergencytextandemailmessages to enrolled users, will notify students, faculty, and staff.
