Juste Agama project 2/ part one Holly Quarzo STORY It wasn’t long ago when I found myself in this situation. My mother was getting ready to travel, my older brother was unstable, my friend (roommate) and I were relocating into a smaller apartment. We were trying to lower the cost of living since my mom wasn’t going to be around for a while. Before she left she wanted to make sure my brother was well situated, his life came crashing down after years of him trying to handle matters on his own. Drugs, and bad affiliation had him knocking on our door few months before we went into transition, my mom had already bought her flight ticket by then. Now it was time for her to leave, and he needed more than a roof over his head, he need a fresh start. My mom got her hand on an application, it was for a rehabilitation camp. I was charged to file the application, and make sure my brother was enrolled on time, by this time my mom was crossing the seas. The application was in paper form, with very detailed questions, responding these questions sometime required that I call the camp for clarification. The process was a bit frustrating, I wish some type of indication were made to emphasize the importance of the questions. I was filling the application meanwhile my brother was lodging in a weekly apartment, my mom managed to get him there before she left. He was certain he could have managed to keep himself in the weekly once lodged in. With all forms of Id lost, he was lodged in with my mom ID. Two weeks went by and unable to keep up with payment he got kicked out. Hence the start of painful journey of the in between, we were waiting for him to get accepted into the camp while fighting for him to have a bed at night, he was in-between sleeping in the streets to a camp with bed and covers. Everyday became a challenge, first things we did; buy a cover, and a jacket for those cold nights. I managed to get him into a motel every now and then, but those forty- five dollars a night do add up, that’s without counting the amount spend driving around for food and etc. Eventually the camp called and he got accepted, early in the morning we packed and off we go. It was an hour drive South Georgia, we arrived and immediately started to familiarize with the faces running the camp. To our surprise we were told the camp was mainly programmed for ex-convicts and those with the history of substance abuse, it was well structured with streak rules and regulation, the camp provided work but it was volunteered work. Despite our welcoming, my brother didn’t take it lightly, he wanted a camp that would allow him freedom and payed labor. We wrestled with the thought of going back and dealing with the difficulties of finding another way, or staying only for the benefit of a shelter. Final decision was for him to stay where he can at least find clarity. I left and off to work I go, a bit concern for his wellbeing, taking into consideration the distance. Later on, that evening I get a call, it was my bro, he had a change of thought, he wanted to return to town. Unable to cope with the conditioning at the camp he decided to leave with or without my help. Obligated I came back the very next morning to get him out, and back to the” In-between “we went. For the next few weeks, I managed to get him into a weekly apartment. We ended running the race of lodging him here and there in search for solutions. It was exhausting to keep wondering where he would sleep next. Fortunately, we got in touch with someone who was willing to help him, someone with more resources than I. Close to a month

Juste Agama project 2/ part one Holly Quarzo later I received a call from a random number, it was my brother he got enrolled into another camp located in downtown Atlanta. I was happy, yet at the same time wished I knew of this from the start. It was my first quarter at SCAD, and I happened to be on campus the day he called. He sent me the address and I immediately ran for visit. A month later I received a call from the camp, it wasn’t my brother, it was another resident; he announced to me that my brother left (ran away). Apparently, that camp was also streak, and he couldn’t handle. Today I know what my brother needed more than anything was to stay at the first camp. I shouldn’t have picked him from the first one. He needed that streak environment where he couldn’t access substances. PAIN POINTS

Usability test Reviews

Users:

KEVIN -The app is understandable, an improvement would be adding coaching process, to

introduce users to new icons and such.

CINDY- “ your joy ride should reflect the brag points”,

“ why should I connect?”

connection part of the prototype feels incomplete, make sure to add to it.

Changes made

Taking into account what Kevin and Cindy told me, I change some of my initial icon into much

more familiar ones. That way I reduced the amount of coaching needed in order to understand

button functionalities. I added to the connection part of the app and also added a joy ride when

app is first opened.

Overall understanding of process

It was a little hard at first to imagine how the pain point/ brag points where to be used in creating

the flow of the app, but once I started on the prototype I quickly noticed how they make the app

much more useful. Having a great story with strong pain point basically creates a strong

foundation for the usability of the app. Moving on from this section of the project, I will improve

the flow a bit and then start working on the visual aspect of the native app.
