A Dream.. Imagine as administrators and
teachers how far our students could be if no matter what subject we taught, we enforced the reading skills needed to be successful.

What is Reading Across the Curriculum?
…it is teaching reading strategies in all classrooms, not just in the reading or language arts classrooms.
![Page 4: Justin Taylor. Imagine as administrators and teachers how far our students could be if no matter what subject we taught, we enforced the reading skills](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082709/56649ce65503460f949b3676/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Why is this Important? Research suggests that the skills learned
by the children in reading classes do not always transfer to their content course such as science, social studies, and math.
For this reason, students must learn how to apply multiple reading strategies across the curriculum so that they can meet challenges presented in reading content texts.

But do I have to teach reading, that not my job.
Not matter what subject you teach, reading is important and student need to understand the material that is presented to them in their textbooks.

Once teachers realize that they are already using many of the sills reading to teach reading then teachers will see that teaching reading across the curriculum will not be so time consuming.

How does reading change? According to Steve Peha (2003) 90% of
reading comes from within the language art portion of elementary school day.
When students move on to middle and high school. Reading selections transition more to non-fiction and more is required from different classes.

What can we do as Elementary Teachers?
In your small group take the next 15 minutes to brainstorm and answer the questions on the given sheet.
We will come back and discuss possible avenues to consider.
