CONTEXT

Design a culinary institute that captures the Oregonian passion for food and food culture. The site is located adjacent to the always popular Portland Saturday Market in Old Portland. Program includes a space for food carts, a grocer, an exhibition space, a public forum, educational spaces, a garden space, and a restaurant.

My design is rooted in capturing the urban excitement that an outdoor market creates. Food is already a means of social interaction. I created a space that acts as a platform for these social interactions to occur. I felt that the best way to create an active urban environment focused on human interaction is by creating a large open volume. This allows for human activity to be observed from every part of this open space. The floors act as platforms in the larger volume, and not viewed as separate entities. The rotational circulation reinforces human interaction. It creates an opportunity for multiple scales of social connection. Always connected inwardly to the bigger space, yet connected to the activity occurring on the individual floors.

My focus of this diagram was to demonstrate my idea of a rotational circulation in which building activites occur through the rotation. I used images to represent the activites that occur on that level while the words describe the ideas and experiences leading to that level.

CONTEXT

Upon doing a site analysis, I came up with initial schemes that respond to the unique corner site. These schemes developed into my parti. This parti represents a solid visual connection to 15th Street, which connects the site to the university, and a dynamic relationship to the corner of the site. I chose to organize the program around different learning experiences that a student faces. The west side is organized into a space that encourages and celebrates group learning. The east side is a more narrow, curved corridor allowing the user to focus and reflect on the individual learning experience of the Suzuki Institute.

Design a music school adapted to the Suzuki method of teaching. This method is based on the belief that anyone can learn music as long as they are in the right environment. The Suzuki method puts a strong emphasis on the presence and involvement of the parents throughout the entirety of the learning process. One hour of individual lessons and four hours of group work are required each week. Students start as young as three years old and continue into late teens.

I want to make good citizens. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart.

CONTEXT

I placed the performance hall at the end of the group space corridor. This allows it to connect with the group space, while still giving it a hierarchial presence. The stage is placed opposite the entrance to make it a destination. The use of the backdrop as a floating plane allows for the sweeping motion of the laminated beams to overtake the audience. Windows allow for a visual connection to the outdoor space. The windows also allow for the performance hall to be showcased when it is not in use.

Design a performance hall for the Suzuki Institute that can seat two hundred people. Then create a construction model of the space.

I decided to create a facade for an urban apartment complex. The central section announces the entrance and con-nects to the street. the glass section is a clear story circulation space, and the remainder is then seen as secondary space by the elongated windows. Paper clips divide the secondary space so to highlight the central section.
