Application deadlines for the Spring Semester 2009: 30 October 2008 and 15 November 2008 (only EUstudents)

Semester dates: 12th January 2009 – 15th May / 18th June 2009Notice that these are the official semester dates. Your courses might end earlier. Orientation schedules willbe informed later.

How to apply?

Please notice that in the new procedure all applications should be addressed to the International AffairsOffice: Rajakatu 35, FI-40200 JYVÄSKYLÄ, FINLAND.

Courses in English

Please see the attached listings. We highly recommend all incoming exchange students to choose courseFinnish 1 + 2 for foreign students . It will give some basic language skills for everyday use and you can alsomeet other exchange students in the class.

AccommodationAccommodation is arranged by Student Housing Organisation KOAS. After receiving a confirmation aboutyour acceptance, submit an application form in the internet, website: www.koas.fi. It is essential to pay thedeposit before arriving! You can find instructions at the KOAS website.

Survival KitThe student union JAMKO can provide a “Survival Kit” for exchange students. It includes all basickitchenware, blankets and linen. The price is 70 € of which 40 € will be returned after the student returnsall equipment in good condition.

Arriving / How to reach Jyväskylä

Classes begin on Monday 12 January 2009. You should plan to arrive before that date. Please wait for yourstudent tutor to contact you about the pick-up service.

If you arrive by plane in Helsinki or Tampere, you will have to take a train or bus to Jyväskylä.

Each One Teach OneNumber of Credits:Course Code: ZWCO2100Type of studies: Elective studiesAim and content: The aim is to provide cooperative, shared learning experiences to a pair or a group of students whoteach each other their respective languages and/or cultures according to a mutually agreed schedule. One aim of thecourse is to provide opportunities to reflect on the process and nature of learning. After the course the student hasdeveloped a deeper understanding of the language/culture in question as well as a greater linguistic/cultural fluency.As a result of the process, the student has a wider understanding of the concept of learning. The course content isgreatly dependent on the decisions of the participants. It can be an introduction to a new language and its respectiveculture or an intensive brush-up course for a previously learned language with a great variety of shades in between,depending on the learners' needs.Implementation: Based on a mutually agreed timetable. The timetable is subject to the approval of the course tutor.The process participants decide on the content and timetable at the beginning of the course. An important addition tothe actual study sessions are the individual, reflective final reports written by the participants.Assessment and items of Assessment: Based on the individual final reports, which should account for activeparticipation in the process as well as for some reflection on the learning outcomes. Moreover, the final report shouldalso, to some extent, analyse the learning experience and the process. Assignments (100%)

This document is to inform you of the change in the application process concerning the exchange studentsapplying to Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JUA).

Students applying for the spring semester 2009 or for future years will need to follow the new procedure.

Current Application System

Students who have already applied for spring semester (beginning January 2009), do NOT need to apply again.We will continue to process their application as normal.

Please notice that in the new procedure all the applications should be addressed to the International AffairsOffice (Rajakatu 35, FI-40200 Jyväskylä, Finland; [email protected]) instead of sending them directly tothe International Coordinator of the School.

Application deadlines for incoming exchange students are:

30 October 2008: non-EU students for the spring semester 200915 November 2008: EU students for the spring semester 200930 April 2009: the autumn semester 2009 or academic year 2009 – 2010

Each applicant must complete the Application Form and Learning agreement of JUA in order to be consideredfor admission.

Application FormThe application form must be completed in full and signed by the student (either an original or a fax). Ifyou send your application by fax you need to send the original one to us by mail also.Learning AgreementThe Learning Agreement has to be signed by the student and the two institutions concerned beforeleaving the home institution. The courses offered by Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences can befound at “Courses in English” for the academic year concerned. For more detailed information oncourses for your study plan, contact the International Coordinator of the School you are going toattend.Transcript of RecordsExchange applicants must enclose their official Transcript of Records with their application.The International Affairs Office will coordinate forwarding the applications to the Schools, where thefinal decision of accepting the application is made. We will confirm the student’s admission to thepartner by e-mail. We will also send an e-mail to the student with the attached Letter of Acceptancewhich will allow the student to start the process of obtaining the residence permit if necessary.NOTE: We will send the original Letter of acceptance and accepted application by mail on requestonly. The e-mail will also include useful information on the future stay at JUA , e.g. on how to apply foraccommodation.

Timing for students applicationWe strongly recommend students to follow the given timing and deadlines for applying to make sure that thestudents can find accommodation and that we can arrange tutoring.

Course Choices in the Learning AgreementStudents must consider their course choices carefully already in advance and follow the advice provided at:http://www.jamk.fi/english/forstudents/forexchangestudents/coursesinenglishThe Learning Agreement needs to be updated after the arrival at the host institution if changes occur.

Official Transcripts of Records will be issued twice a year by JUA. We will send the Transcripts of Records assoon as possible, at the latest:

- by the end of September (for the exchanges in the previous spring semester / the academic year) - by the end of February (for the exchanges in the previous autumn semesterProvisional Transcripts of Records can be issued on request only.The original Transcript is sent to the student and the home institution will be offered a copy.
