rospero's magical island might just as well be Macau as Bermuda (which was outer space so far as Elizabethan Theatregoers could tell!) The Tempest, one of the masterworks of all literature, is fantastic and enigmatic, joyous and sinister. The play lends itself most appropriately as a celebrating contribution to our season's Chinese Centennial program.

The story tells how Prospera, cheated of his Duchy by a usurping brother Antonio and cast adrift at sea with his little daughter Miranda 12 years before, now lives with her on an island. He is served by a captive spirit Ariel and monstrous slave, Caliban.

Using magic, Prospera raises a storm and by shipwrecking his brother together with Alonso (King of Naples), his brother Sebastian, his son Ferdinand and Gonzalo, a kindhearted councillor brings them, unknowingly, into his power. Sebastian plots to kill Alonso, while the court jester Trinculo and boozy butler Stefano are urged by Caliban to plot against Prospera and take over the Island.

With Ariel's help Prospera triumphs over these plots, gives his. blessing to a love and marriage between Miranda and Ferdinand, recovers the Duchy from his brother and, finally, sets Ariel free.

All this within a matter of hours in a setting when reality and illusion fuse and overlap . . . 'such stuff as dreams are made on' ....
