middle school in the fall. The students had an amazing week, learningabout the diverse ecosystems of the marsh, estuary, beach, and ocean, participating in team building activities, and developing friendships they willgrow in just a few months.

Beauty & The Beast MockTrial

The Rutland County Bar Associationand the Rutland Unit of the VermontSuperior Court invited KES fifthgrade to this year's Law Day MockTrial on May 19th at the RutlandCounty Courthouse. Thank you tothe grade 5 parents who drovestudents and negated the need for abus. Rutland area lawyers and judgesperformed a mock trial designed to

provide basic educational information about a jury trial in an entertainingfashion. Jurors for the mock trial were randomly selected from the 5th gradeclasses in attendance. The theme for the trial was "Beauty and the Beast."This was a remarkable experience for all.

Mock Trial by Chloe MasilloThe mock trial was an amazing experience! I had so much fun! I reallywant to be a lawyer, so being able to be at the mock trial was awesomebecause I got to see what an actual lawyer does. Also, the actors were great! They all fit the part they were. Like Chip, hehad a really high voice, and in the actual movie, Chip had a high voice.Belle had a great voice, like the real Belle in the movie. Although I wasn't able to be a juror, it was still so exciting. The judge wasjust how I imagined. He had the long black robe and the gavel! It was socool! I learned so much, like how witnesses are asked so many questions andthey have to tell what they saw. And I didn't even know there were jurorsand that the jurors go in a special room to decide who wins the case. I learned a lot from the mock trial and I had a ton of fun!

Grade 2 Bioblast at Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historic Park

(MBRNH)Second grade students, along with other WCSU Elementary and highschool students, participated in a "BioBlitz" at MBRNHP. Guided by a parkranger, we explored different ecosystems with the goal of identifyingcomponents of a healthy ecosystem. We observed animals in different ecosystems and learned that toads laymany eggs and need to lay them in water. We observed plants and learnedthat there are many types of mushrooms. Ruby Keefe reported learningthat some mushrooms grow on trees and they look like a horse's hoof or aturkey's tail. Liam McKenna reported that the job of a mushroom in a forestis to break down dead trees and turn them into soil. The students who observed flowers learned the names of flowers such asthe Buttercup and the JackinthePulpit. Lillian Smith reported that there isa flower that grows underground and smells like rotten meat. This flower

attracts ants and gets them to take the pollen. This is important becauseants are pollinators. This was a great day! Many thanks to the parents who chaperoned the trip.

Grade 1 Hatching Chicks

First grade students have welcomed six baby chicks to our class. Theyhave learned so much from this science project. Here is a report by FaithMcConnell that describes our learning and reflection of hatching chicks. "My report is about chicks. Chickens live for twenty years. There are threeplaces they live. They are cage, free range, and barn. Some are hens andsome are roosters. Hens lay eggs. Chicks are wet when they hatch. Theyhave an egg tooth to hatch from the egg. They hatch with their feet. Chicksgrow in their egg. I think this project is cool because you get to see howthey are different between when they first hatch to now." We would like to thank Mary Helm for providing the eggs and bringing thechicks back to the farm to join their brothers and sisters. This was asuccessful project and everyone at KES enjoyed the chicks.
