Highlights from KARA’s Board Meet-ing on May 21: KARA held our second annual Tellers Committee Appreciation Dinner for our 2009 AGM volunteers from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thanks to Mirella Zeppieri for donating a deli-cious lasagna and to KARA directors for their culinary contributions! Kleinburg New Forest Spring

Clean Up is rescheduled for Thursday June 4th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. as our May 10th day was cancelled due to inclement weather. KARA sent a letter and pro-vided a deputation in support of the Vaughan Campus of Care to the City of Vaughan for the Spe-cial Budget Meeting held on April 27th. It was well-received. A Membership Committee

has been created by KARA to undertake a yearly plan to in-crease our membership. David Brand will chair this committee. Director Iain Craig reported that the TRCA will be desig-nating a large part of the Hum-ber watershed in Vaughan a “Community Action Site”. KARA continues to seek sponsorship opportunities from local businesses.

How many of us in Kleinburg and area have had to face an anxious trip to a hospital only to ask ourselves which one should we go to? How bad is the traffic? How sick is my pre-cious child, parent or spouse? How long will we wait to be seen? These worries will hopefully be behind us in a few short years thanks to the passion, commitment and heart of the staff and volunteer Board of the Vaughan Health Campus of Care(VHCC) and Vaughan Health Care Foundation(VHCF) and their exten-sive efforts to bring a hospital to Vaughan- now the largest City in Can-ada without one. “We continue to make great strides towards reaching our goal. This is truly a momentous accomplishment which will propel us forward through the next planning stages.” said Mi-chael DeGasperis, Chair of the VHCC and VHCF as Vaughan’s Committee of the Whole last week voted unani-mously in favour of the financial sup-port necessary for the local share of building a new hospital at the pro-posed site at Hwy 400 and Major Mackenzie across from Canada’s

Wonderland. The 80 million dollars (or $60 per average Vaughan household per year) represents part of the municipal funding required by the Province. Local communities are expected to pay 100% of purchas-ing land, and funding furniture, fixture, and equipment costs for new facilities while the Province pays for 90% of the construction capital. The VHCF was incorporated in 2004 and they’ve been single-minded in their health care campus vision ever since! This volunteer Board has shepherded a compre-hensive process to date which in-cludes health services needs assess-ments, stakeholder negotiations with the Province and Local Health Integration Network, extensive community consultations, opening of the Vaughan Community Health Centre in Maple, and an externally-reviewed professional site selection process. With the local funding in place they can now move on to the Prov-ince’s requirements for the Master

Program and Plan for the hospital site. “This is where we build our community’s vision for better health care from the ground up. The time has arrived where our vision will take shape and become reality” expresses DeGasperis. While they are off and running on their next task, Michael De-Gasperis isn’t too busy to say thanks to the local community and community groups, including KARA, who came out in force to support the Campus of Care “We’re very grateful to the com-munity and our elected represen-tatives for such a strong show of support for this initiative. Resi-dents recognize that a hospital for Vaughan is an extremely impor-tant investment in our future.” Five or so years from now, when our trip to our local hospital is 6 minutes instead of 22 minutes or even 60 minutes away, we’ll be shedding tears of joy for lives saved thanks to the efforts of vol-unteers like these in our commu-nity. THANK YOU VHCC AND VHCF!

Think of the most important docu-ments in your life—sealed by your signature; your wedding contract, home purchase, latest job offer, or last will and testament. When you sign your signature it is your commit-ment that you stand behind the words you have just written or the contract you have just signed, knowing that your honour depends on it. So what is the value of a signed document? It tells the reader who created it and thus helps the reader understand potential underlying per-spectives. It says to the reader that the writer might have to substantiate his or her claims, if necessary in a court of law. What about anonymous communi-cations? Anonymous communica-tions rob the reader of context. All sorts of things might be said without the fear of accountability or responsi-bility. Imagine if you yourself were the target of an anonymous posting or flyer, where someone libelled you and made false accusations against you. It wouldn’t be fair, but unfortu-nately there would be precious little you could do about it. Post Office policy is they don’t “censor” the mail. Forums in on-line newspapers are filled with anony-mous people posting comments with-out fear of reprisal. As for KARA’s communications, you know where they come from–community volunteers working on behalf of local residents. KARA stands behind what is done and said in its name. We do our best to foster community spirit and engagement, and to provide accurate and timely information that we hope is of inter-est to you!

Community Action Sites, estab-lished by the Toronto and Region Con-servation Authority, are specific loca-tions of environmental interest, where community partners focus resources to achieve common objectives. A proposal presented to several TRCA staff members, to establish a large Community Action Site on the East Humber River, has been given the approval to proceed. The area in ques-tion would include the East Humber River valley, and some associated ta-bleland, from the King-Vaughan Townline, down the East Humber to Pine Grove. This Action Site would include Kortright and Boyd Park. Over the past decade, a small group of Kleinburg and area residents have been concerned with what is, and what is not, happening in the East Humber River valley. Some of the issues, or areas of concern, are minor - naming new bridges over the East Humber, for example. Several of the issues are of real concern to area residents – transfer-ring the ‘right of way’ through Boyd Park from the City of Vaughan to the

TRCA, completing the William Granger Greenway south into Boyd Park, completing the Pierre and Janet Berton Trail in Boyd Park, etc. It seems that there are too few people, and a growing list of items that we, as residents, need to be concerned about. Our list of issues has grown to 16. The East Humber River Valley is perhaps the last, and largest green space in Vaughan. It needs protection as urban sprawl gobbles up open space. If you are concerned, and would like to be involved, there is a meet-ing at the Kortright Centre on June 17 – exact time has not been set (but it probably will be about 7 p.m.). This is a public meeting to establish our next steps. We will need people to be on committees, and we will need people who will be willing to come out and do some fieldwork.
