Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

Dear Parents and Guardians

Does your child attend school regularly? In this newsletter I would like to discuss the importance of regular attendance at school on learning and achievement. The odd day off school does not seem like very much however it soon adds up and students start falling behind. Medical situations and critical family incidents are reasonable causes for non-attendance that often occur unexpectedly throughout a young person‘s school life, however many students take time off for other reasons. Recently I was working with a student about their progress at school where an attendance rate of 80% was having a significant impact on their achievement. When I explained that this was equivalent to one day off per week which added up to 10 days off a term and eventually 40 days a year the student started to see that the time off was translating into a lot of time off school. In fact it was equivalent to 8 weeks off school! So the odd day or two off school can very quickly get to a level where learning is severely impacted.

If you notice a pattern of non-attendance emerging, please contact the Middle School Program Coordinator Mrs Julie Brown if your child is in Year 7 – 9 or the Senior School Program Coordinator Mr Frank Gaudin if your child is in Year 10 -12. Often we find that the Student Services Team is able to assist a young person who may be experiencing personal difficulties, class issues or has other concerns that can be sorted with the appropriate intervention. Other members of the Student Services Team include – the School Chaplain Jono Prosser, School Community Nurse Sharon Muir, our AIEOs Sonya Woods and Marrisa Willey, Follow the Dream Coordinator Caitlyn Fitzgerald and School Psychologist Laura Hegney.

Are you a Grandparent caring for your grandchildren? If the answer is yes then we have just the group for you! Over the last two years we have been running meetings for Grandcarers at the school. This group is now a registered Wanslea Grandcarers group led by Mrs Nicky Pratt. Nicky has a huge amount of experience as a Grandcarer and is keen to support other Grandparents who are caring for their grandchildren. The support of Wanslea enables the group to access additional services and support. The meetings occur once a term within school hours and are held at the high school. All Grandcarers across Katanning and surrounding towns are welcome to join the group. You don‘t have to have a child in high school to join. Morning tea is usually provided and the meetings also include school based activities or information such as understanding your grandchild‘s report, navigating your way around social media and other issues affecting young people still at school. If you would like to join the next meeting contact Mrs Nicky Pratt on 0407 102 364.

Farewell to outgoing School Board members At the Annual Public Meeting on 26 May, we farewelled Steve Blyth, our inaugural School Board Chair. Steve brought a varied and broad knowledge around governance, structure of boards and the needs of the Katanning community. To gain greater understanding of school strategic planning and operations, Steve participated in various meetings at the school as well as being a member of selection panels for school teaching and non-teaching staff. Our many meetings in the lead up to School Board meetings were robust and thorough. I am very appreciative of the time and commitment Steve gave to our school Board and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

We also farewelled Scott Keast, Ron Smith and Richelle Warren at the completion of their terms.

Scott Keast was past President of the P&C and represented parents through his work on the P&C and in the broader community. Scott‘s capacity to drill down into the policies and school strategic direction made him a valuable and respected member of the Board.

Ron Smith joined the School Council in 2014 as a community representative connected to the Grandcarers, the Katanning Men‘s Shed and retirees in the community. Ron was a tremendous support in assisting the establishment our Wanslea Grandcarers‘ group.

Richelle Warren was also a School Council member who transitioned onto the inaugural School Board as a parent representative. Her connection to parents and students made her well placed to present concerns and issues to the Board and the Principal.

I would like to thank parents and community members for their support of the school.

Have you met our new School Board members?

The School Board welcomes Mrs Siobhan Reeves and Mr Robbie Miniter who join Mrs Melissa Berrigan and Mr Ian Hanna as parent representatives; Mrs Robyn Quartermaine, Ms Zia Gul Sultani and Ms Suzanne Leckie as appointed community members and Ms Genevieve Hulin as staff representative. All appointed Community Representatives have a one year tenure, parents have a two year tenure and staff members either have a one year or two year tenure. Student representation is covered by Head Boy and Head Girl who are elected by their peers and lead the Student Leadership Group which has student representation from every

year level. We thank all of our new Board members for their support of our school.

The School Board established the May meeting as the Annual Public Meeting and the anniversary date for one and two year tenures. The staggered tenures have been established to ensure that there is never a complete change-over of Board members ensuring that the collective knowledge and understandings are not lost.

Many thanks to the parents and staff who made time to attend the Annual Public Meeting of the School Board. The meeting covered the school‘s Annual Report, the K-12 Literacy Strategy initiated by the high school and the new School Behaviour Support Plan.

Royal Flying Doctor supported by our Student Leadership Group

Our young leaders are always looking for ways to support their fellow students and the local community so when the idea came up at their weekly lunch time meeting to organise an activity to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service it was really well received. The activity involved inviting students to participate in a paper plane competition (photos in the SLG article in this newsletter) as well as collecting donations from staff. All up a very successful activity raising $437.10 for a very worthy cause that supports regional Western Australia.

Improvement Progress The implementation of most of our Improvement Plans is well advanced with ongoing improvement in attainment, attendance and literacy however there is still a long way to go to embed our practices to support sustainable improvement. This term the Classroom Observation Team of Miss Sarah Watson, Mrs Melissa Patterson and Mrs Habibah Sarip, along with myself as Principal, has completed the Classroom Observations professional learning in Perth. The team worked with staff on the last School Development Day to establish our protocols for classroom peer observation and the pedagogical framework to support observations. The trial pairs have already commenced and they will report back to fellow staff as the term progresses.

Prac Students This term we welcome Dylan Cosgrove, Adrianne Hortle and Tom McClurg who are in are in their final year at Curtin University completing a Diploma of Education. They are at the school until the end of term to complete their final practicum in the Science, Mathematics and HASS Learning Areas. Our ongoing partnership with Curtin University continues to enable young teachers to gain valuable teaching experience in regional areas.

I applaud these pre-service teachers in their preparedness to complete their final prac in a country school. This will provide a comprehensive and varied experience working in a school with a diverse student population.

FROM THE ENGLISH LEARNING AREA

English Focus Currently in English we are focussed on interrogating our Year 10, 11 and 12 OLNA results. We are able to print off individualised reports for each student who has not yet achieved a Category 3 in the OLNA Reading or Writing tests. This allows us to implement specific strategies to assist each student to develop the skills necessary to pass the next round of OLNA in September. We always aim for the best outcome for our students and we are currently working hard to support them as much as we can.

English EST

The English EST (externally set task) for Year 12 students was held last week. This task is designed by SCSA (the School Curriculum Standards Authority) and was sent to schools under lock and key prior to the test. No staff were allowed to see the test, or the marking rubric, until all students had completed the test. The purpose of this is to ensure that teachers are not teaching to the test and that student responses reflect their actual understanding of the concepts. To ensure comparability we swapped classes and marked very objectively as we had no student names (only numbers) to refer to. As I understand it, SCSA will audit a random sample of our students‘ work and check it to ensure that the marks allocated directly reflect students‘ ability.

Similarities with other schools

Last week I visited Swan View Senior High School in Perth to see how English is run in their school. It was very interesting to learn that we have similar students and similar programs. Their school runs an academic excellence program for their top stream of students and they cover the same sort of topics as we do here. For example I found out that their 9.1 class has just begun studying the novel Animal Farm and guess what book I have just started with the 9.1 class here in Katanning?!

Support for English teachers

We have had Penny James from Statewide Services visiting in Week 7 to support our teachers with EALD classes and reporting. She also works closely with Mrs Dolan and the Literacy teachers when she visits. In Week 8 we have Warren Grellier visiting and the focus will be back mapping of key skills for the academic stream from 7.1 right through to Year 12 ATAR. Warren has already audited our teaching programs, now we are just ensuring that we are ticking all of the boxes and that all staff can articulate the key pointers so that absolutely nothing is missed.

Good Answers Guide

All ATAR English Year 11 and 12 students should have purchased a copy of the 2016 Good Answers Guide released by the ETAWA. This is a fantastic resource that includes information about key course concepts, appropriate structure of texts, annotated responses and scaffolded activities. As well as being a great revision tool, the book is useful when students need further information on an English topic and is great preparation for exams! Here is the link to purchase a copy: http://www.etawa.org.au/publications/good-answer-guides/

A few weeks ago the Wednesday class went on a combined excursion with the Year 12 Geography class to Police Pools to conduct a study of a wetland environment. They had two periods to tramp along the boardwalks and wander around the creek areas and picnic area. The students then completed an assignment evaluating the condition of the wetland and identified the ways people can impact upon, use and manage the area. Thank you to Miss Watson for driving the bus for the excursion.

The students are currently running an experiment testing the effect of pollutants on duckweed and

will analyse the results over the next three weeks.

Next week the Year 11 class begins looking at the forces of motion and will be experimenting with designing rockets, while the Year 12 students will begin looking at aspects of car safety, design and

car crashes until the end of the year.

MATHEMATICS NEWS

Room 23 has been preparing for a new arrival. We are expecting a baby Spiny Leaf Insect! The class brainstormed how best to keep our little critter and came up with a design. Taleeah and Mrs Anderson went out and bought a container. They enlisted the help of Mr Sandwell to modify the lid so the container has ventilation. Thanks to Taleeah‘s hard work, we are all ready for our impending arrival.

We have researched the Spiny Leaf Insect and now know what they eat and where they live. Did you know that it takes a Spiny Leaf Insect egg one to three years to hatch? The eggs are taken underground by ants where they are protected from predators until they hatch. When the Spiny Leaf Insects first hatch they look like ants, so are not attacked by the ants while they make their escape up into the trees.

Mathematics and Mathletics At the last school assembly, the Mathletics Trophy for Term 1 2016 was presented to Cintami Turiya in Year 9. All students have a Mathletics account and are able to use it to practice their maths skills in class and at home through quizzes, games and tutorials. Students receive points for their activities and Cintami accrued the highest number of points across all year levels last term. We congratulate Cintami on her success and encourage all students to strengthen their mathematical understanding through

the use of Mathletics.

In Maths classes this term, the Year 7 students will be learning about algebra, angles and fractions, while the Year 8 classes explore index laws, algebraic expressions and linear relationships. The Year 9s are investigating rates, proportions and statistics and the Years 10s are moving onto univariate data, geometry and trigonometry. The Year 12 Essential and Foundation Maths students have just sat their Externally Set Task and the ATAR students have just finished their exams. We are looking forward to some good results from these students and remind everyone

that the uses of Maths are exponential!

BUSH RANGERS PERSEVERE

At the end of Week 4, 27 Bush Ranger Cadets and 6 Instructors headed down to Albany for a weekend of camping and exploring. The weather forecast was for strong winds, lots of rain, hail and storms so we made sure our tents were well secured and we had plenty of warm clothes. Fortunately our tents were water proof, our camping spot was fairly sheltered and there was a camp

kitchen to retreat into.

On Saturday we visited the Albany Museum and the brig ―Amity‖ before using a small break in the weather to see the Natural Bridge, the Gap and the Blow Holes. The new viewing platform at the Gap gave us a great view of the power of the ocean and the wild weather meant the Blow Holes were impressive. After eating our lunch in the shelter of the bus we warmed up at the heated indoor pool before heading back to camp for a BBQ tea, craft activities, card games and choc chip

pancakes.

On Sunday we visited the Wind Farm and saw how these massive turbines provide renewable energy for Albany. We also found two geocaches and saw part of the Bibbulmun Track. When we got back to school we had to air out all our tents as they were still damp; all part of the adventure of

camping in winter.

Thank you to Nathan and the team at Swags and Wags for the gift of torches; they certainly came in handy. Well done to all the Bush Rangers and Leaders for being resilient and persevering through

some tough conditions.

PAPER AEROPLANE DAY 18 MAY 2016—FUNDRAISER FOR RFDS On Wednesday 18 May the Student Leadership Group hosted a paper plane competition, which was held in the school gym. This was a chance for students to design, construct and have a go at launching their creations. The students were provided with an assortment of materials and tools, and given a period of time to build their masterpiece before they were put to the ultimate test. The gravity defying aeroplanes were judged on the distance travelled, aesthetics and flight style.

Students had a chance to win a range of prizes. Students paid an entry fee of a gold coin donation as a fundraising effort for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Paper Aeroplane competition raised $41.50.

The winners of the day were: 1st - Blade Miles 2nd - Deakon Morton 3rd - Mr Treloar

The Student Leadership Group then approached the staff to help make a difference through their kind donations. All up as a school we raised a combined total of $437.40 for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

A big thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser. Student Leadership Group

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is held from May 27 to June 3 each year and across the country, lots of community and school groups facilitate reconciliation activities. This year, the Aboriginal Education Team at Katanning Senior High School successfully applied for a PALS grant. PALS, an initiative of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, encourages young Western Australian school students to develop projects that promote reconciliation in their local community. PALS commenced in 2004 and is based on the core attributes of:

Partnership between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people; Acceptance of difference as unique and to be respected; Learning more about ourselves and each other, and, Sharing a common journey along the path of healing and reconciliation towards a more harmonious and optimistic future.

The grant is allowing the Aboriginal Education Team to run several small projects with a focus on reconciliation. During NRW you may have spotted one of these projects, an artwork titled ‗One Country‘ on display in the Front Office at Katanning Senior High School. The artwork was a collaboration between the students and staff of Follow the Dream and Deadly Sista Girlz. Just prior to NRW I wrote to community groups and supporters of the school inviting them to add their name to our ‗One Country‘ artwork. Their mark symbolises a desire to see reconciliation live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians. Any visitor to the school could contribute to the artwork and we had a great response with representatives from Katanning Police, Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation, Wirrapanda Foundation, Katanning Shire, KSHS board, students and staff all making their mark. We thank all those who added to the artwork and it will be put on display in the near future.

We move forward knowing that our diversity makes us richer and accepting that together, we are stronger.

Reconciliation is at the heart of our nation’s future.

Just a reminder to everyone that Country Week Scholarship applications should have been returned to the school by Friday 10th June. This is a golden opportunity to help fund students‘ attendance at Country Week in 2016. The P&C held a sausage sizzle over the weekend outside the Katanning Leisure Centre where we raised over $650. We would like to thank the community for their support. We are now starting a body wash fundraiser. Please ensure that all orders (accompanied by your payment) are returned to the school‘s office by Friday 24 June. An order form is attached at the back

of this newsletter. For more updates on what the P&C is currently doing, please visit our Facebook page, Katanning Senior High School P&C. Please remember that the next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 15 June commencing at 6.00pm in the Admin Conference Room at Katanning Senior High School. If you are interested in supporting your child‘s school, we would love to see you at this meeting. Mrs Cheryl Chambers President—Katanning Senior High School P&C

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

SMOKING...

What’s in a cigarette?

Cigarettes are made from the dried leaves of the tobacco plant after they have been treated with many different chemicals. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, and many of

these cause cancer. Some of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke include;

Arsenic (also found in white ant poison);

Hydrogen cyanide (the poison used in gas chambers in World War II);

Benzene (also found in petrol), and;

Acetone (also found in paint stripper and nail polish remover).

Smoking is the largest cause of preventable death in the Western World. For more

information on smoking, go to www.oxygen.org.au and www.quit.org.au

Facts about smoking

Approximately 80% of Australian adults don‘t smoke.

The majority of Australian adults who do smoke say that they wish they had never

started smoking and that they would like to stop.

Around 80% of Australian smokers have tried to quit at some point.

Almost 93% of young people aged 12 to 17 years do not smoke.

People who start smoking in their teen years are more likely to become regular smokers, smoke more heavily, have difficulties quitting and are at greater risk of getting smoking

related diseases.

Smoking is the largest cause of preventable death in Australia and about 245 Western Australians have body organs partially or completely removed because of problems caused by smoking each year. For more info on smoking, go to www.oxygen.org.au and

www.quit.org.au

Help your child to be a non-smoker

Set a good example by being a non-smoker. If you have found quitting difficult and are still

a smoker, tell your child how you feel about it.

Reinforce the non-smoking messages. Make your house and car smoke-free zones. Don‘t send your child to buy cigarettes or allow them to light cigarettes for yourself or others. If there are smokers in the house, keep cigarettes where children cannot access them.

Discuss the issue of smoking with your child when you see others smoke.

Educate your children about the dangers of smoking. Explain the long-term risks but emphasise the immediate risks to their health and wellbeing (for example, bad breath, stained teeth and fingers and less money in their pocket). Explaining the long-term risks may not have much of an impact, as young people can find it difficult to imagine

20 or 30 years into the future.

The One Million Stars to End Violence Project is a worldwide campaign that aims to bring people

together to weave stars as an expression of support for ending all forms of violence.

The woven stars are a symbol of light and courage. Each star represents a commitment to resist violence, and honour peoples‘ right to

safety and respect.

You are invited to be a part of this project and weave stars which will be displayed in your community. The stars will then become part of a giant

installation on display at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Check out www.onemillionstars.net/

The project offers a hopeful and uplifting way to stimulate community solidarity. If you would like to support this project you can purchase

ribbons from www.flowerpack.com.au/

You are welcome to join your local campaigners in weaving stars. For

more information phone Gail on 9821 6500.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Australian Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help with its Community Visitors Scheme. Trained volunteers will be matched to make a regular social visit to an isolated elderly person living in the community or in an aged care facility. You will visit people who are socially isolated and whose quality of life would be improved by your friendship and companionship. If you are interested in assisting and would like further details, please contact the Red Cross on

SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICE The School Dental Service (SDS) is a state-wide service operated by Dental Health Services (DHS) as part of the Western Australian Department of Health that provides free general dental care to

enrolled school children aged 5 – 16 years, or to the end of year 11, whichever occurs first.

The staff at the Katanning Dental Therapy Centre (DTC) have returned from their mobile run and are attempting to examine and treat the children attending schools in Katanning. New DHS Policy requires parents to be present at some of the appointments in order for informed consent to be gained. Staff have had significant problems contacting parents for appointments, resulting in many

missed appointments and loss of valuable appointment time.

If you wish your child to be seen, please ensure you notify the DTC of any change of telephone

number or address so that the staff can contact you.

Please provide the following:

Child’s full name

Child’s date of birth

Name of school and year

Correct address

Correct telephone number

Name of carer

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

HOSTING A FRENCH EXCHANGE STUDENT For the last nine years a program has been in place offering the opportunity to young French students aged 13-16 years to discover

Australia and its education system.

The purpose of the program is for these French student to experience living with an Australian family, to see how an Australian school operates, to improve their English language skills through this full immersion and to create a strong friendship with their Anglophone peers. The program is highly successful and both Australians and French students greatly enjoy the exchange. Many families still keeping in touch

with each other.

The students are fully briefed about the school rules, are not to leave the school premises during the school day and will attend classes daily.

They will be fully covered by appropriate insurance.

Host families will be visited prior to the student‘s arrival by the organiser to explain the program. We believe such an exchange is also highly beneficial for our Modern Languages students, opening their eyes (and ears) to similarly minded students for an extended period. Please contact Martine Floyd via email : [email protected] or Mobile 0403 019 609 if you are

interested in hosting a student from 17 July to 16 August 2016.
