New and Enhanced NIH Scoring System: What Does it Mean for Ks?

• Old scoring system: triaged grant received no score

• With the new scoring system, component scores are given from each reviewer even if grant is “ not discussed.”– Provides information regarding issues with proposal– A proposal that is not discussed may still be very

fixable and ultimately successful• Scores of 40-60 are very common in K study

sections– Keep in mind that “one moderate weakness” will

result in a 5

• Undeveloped career development plan– Need courses; time-line important

• Proposals that appear not to have been read by mentor do not fare well.
