THEATRES 2022

If anything has become clear to us in the past couple of years, it’s that nothing beats the magic of live theatre. At Riverside, we’re delighted to be re-opening our doors once again with a program of live, in person events for your students as they ditch the screens and re-experience the world in 3D.

As always, our experiences are high quality, curriculum relevant and come from the very best professional artists, theatre companies and practitioners in the country. We strive to help you give your students the best learning outcomes. Whether it’s seeing a beloved book come to life on stage, broadening their knowledge of the communities and societies they live in, interrogating a social issue or experiencing a skill directly from the experts, our program seeks to inspire creativity, empathy, and deep thinking in your students.

You can download full curriculum links and any additional resources from our website to help you solidify the learning in the classroom. Our staff are here to help, so if there is anything we can do to make your experience the best it can be, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always delighted to hear from you.

All of us at Riverside are very much looking forward to seeing you at the theatre in 2022!

RIVERVSIDE THEATRES’ ACCESS POINTSAccess points are indicators that let you know aspects of a production that may provide groups with a higher level of engagement related to their needs. There are 5 access points. These are marked on each production page.

Language: None No text or dialogue is used in this performance.

Language: Easy The text or dialogue used in this production is limited or simple.

Music: This production has a strong music focus.

Visual Cues: This production has strong visual cues giving students a different reference point for comprehension of the narrative or subject matter.

Interactive Performance: High levels of audience interaction creating a less formal environment and requiring less ‘passive’ attention by audience members.

SPECIFIC ACCESSWe believe it is important to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate and enjoy going to the theatre. Specific accessible performances include Auslan Interpreted, Audio Described and Relaxed Performances. However, if you have a group requiring any of our access options for an event other than the ones we have on offer please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate your request.

WHEELCHAIR AND LEVEL ACCESS Riverside offers level access and space for wheelchairs in all venues. Please let us know if you need level access or a wheelchair space at the time of your booking.

HEARING SYSTEM Riverside has state-of-the-art hearing systems in all three theatres to assist patrons who are hearing impaired. Patrons can choose from a single ear earpiece, a neck loop attached to their own hearing aid or their own headphones, to amplify the sound from the stage. This system is adaptable for people with all types of hearing loss. Please indicate on your booking form if your group requires access to the headsets.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION Select performances are audio described for the benefit of patrons with low or no vision. Actions, expressions, gestures, sequences, costumes and scenery are described by professional describers. Blind and/or vision impaired patrons will hear the description through headsets.

This service is provided based on demand. If you require it for your group, please indicate this on your booking form. Due to the preparation involved, a minimum of 8 weeks’ notice is required.

TOUCH TOURS Held prior to a performance, these tours are arranged specifically for students or teachers who are blind or vision impaired. They give students and teachers an opportunity to tour the set, props and costumes up close and in context. Tours are by prior arrangement and are particularly relevant for productions being audio described.

AUSLAN INTERPRETATION Some productions are selected to be interpreted using Australian Sign Language (Auslan). This provides an opportunity for students or teachers who are Deaf to access the theatre show. The aural cues that are essential to the storytelling and the theatrical experience are translated into sign language. Auslan interpreters are discreetly positioned for comfortable viewing by Deaf audiences.

This service is provided based on demand. If you require it for your group, please indicate this on your booking form. Due to the preparation involved, a minimum of 8 weeks notice is required.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES Select performances throughout the year are provided as relaxed performances. These are sensory friendly performances where the perceived ‘rules’ of theatre are modified to allow patrons with Autism and other specific needs to enjoy the performance in a welcoming environment.

Modifications will differ depending on the show, but can include:

• The house lights being dimmed, but not turned all the way down;

• The understanding that patrons may come and go from the theatre as needed;

• Elements of the show that might include loud noises or sudden bright lights being toned down or removed.

RIVERSIDE THEATRES PRESENTS THE SPACE COMPANY

STARDUST + THE MISSION BY JOEL CARNEGIE AND TOM MOLYNEUX

Let your students experience documentary theatre at its best. Be inspired by the stories of two ordinary individuals, whose extraordinary lives are rediscovered by their very own descendants.

STARDUST tells the story of bandleader and trumpet player, Col Brain. Told through the eyes of his grandson – award winning ABC presenter & performer, Joel Carnegie – herein lies the discovery of a time capsule of Australian musical life, in a heart-warming quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life by the things he left behind.

THE MISSION follows the journey of “Fighting Gunditjmara” man, Allan McDonald – one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist for war. He fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba, only to be denied a soldier’s settlement on his ultimate return to Australia and forced from his land at the Lake Condah Mission. This captivating and rollicking story, told by his great, great nephew, Gunditjmara man Tom Molyneux, tells the truth of Uncle Allan’s struggle; fighting for Country, for love, and for justice.

FYI Includes adult themes, occasional coarse language, smoke, and scenes depicting war and violence. ‘The Mission’ contains depictions of, and reference to, Aboriginal people who have passed away. It also describes confronting content in relation to the massacre, dispossession, and mistreatment of First Nations Peoples.

RIVERSIDE THEATRES PRESENTS A LAB KELPIE PRODUCTION

BECOME THE ONEBY ADAM FAWCETT DIRECTED BY LYALL BROOKS COMPOSITION & SOUND DESIGN BY TOM BACKHAUS CAST CHRIS ASIMOS & HENRY STRAND

An award-winning romantic comedy featuring two vibrant, lovable characters at its heart, Become The One explores why a footballer would choose to remain closeted, and why their openly gay partner would choose to accept it.

Weaving a clever tapestry of comedy, drama and romance, the play repositions the typical “closeted sportsman” narrative by asking its audience to consider:

What if it was the partner, not the athlete, that became the driving force behind dismantling the heteronormativity of Australia’s national sport? What might they – and that journey – look like?

Winner of the 2018 Playtime Award for New Writing, this funny, smart and challenging drama explores the true meaning of bravery and what it might take to do the right thing – as a lover, as a high-profile sportsman, as a human being – to become the one.

SPORT FOR JOVE PRESENTS

MACBETHBY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

“O full of scorpions is my mind dear wife...”

Damien Ryan directs a brand new production of Macbeth for Sport for Jove in 2022 offering new insights into this extraordinary play and a thrillingly good cast – a deeply atmospheric, faithful and exciting introduction to the play for young audiences.

Shakespeare’s most immersive and haunting play tells of the murderous ascent to ‘greatness’ of a husband and wife who believe they can control time and destiny. A loving couple, suffering the loss of a child, are surrounded by the children of others – of the King, Macduff, Banquo. To what extent is their first criminal act an act of love in that terrible void, a sacrifice she makes for him and in return, he for her?

Sport for Jove’s acclaimed Macbeth is an ecstatic vision of what love and ambition can do to people, of ghosts, shadows, and the terrors of the imagination.

Macbeth is a must-see for students of the play, or young people experiencing Shakespeare for the first time.

SPORT FOR JOVE PRESENTS PERFORMANCE SYMPOSIUM SERIES

SUMMER OF THE 17TH DOLL

Language is the fundamental tool in Lawler’s success in this great Australian play, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll – his language is our connection point and Lawler struck an almost revolutionary chord with his sharp, representative and idiosyncratic dialogue, replete with slang and local rhythms, and a daringly heightened and theatrical edge at times. Our Symposium gives students a powerful engagement with the language of this play and what makes it tick.

We dig beneath Lawler’s stripping away of artifice and the romantic idealism we attach to our identity, then and now, to help students recognise that identity is a changing, shifting, complex thing that cannot be pinned down to a relative past or clung to forever. Join us for an exploration of the great questions Lawler still confronts us with.

Sport for Jove’s Symposium gives students a powerful engagement with the language of this play and what makes it tick.

Arthur Miller’s parable of mass hysteria is a portrait of the ordinary evils latent in any society, of mindless, hysterical persecution through ignorance, fear of ‘otherness’ and our capacity to serve ourselves above all others, making it one of the world’s most transcendent and important stories, in any age. Damien Ryan’s intensive and detailed Symposium on The Crucible offers a rich opportunity for students to meet the characters, look beneath the play – its language, characters, form and theatricality.

What does it mean to us now? Come and join the conversation. After all, we can stand back from these puritanical thinkers and feel safe from their ignorant, outdated superstitions and prejudices but Miller’s very successful point is that we just can’t. The belief systems and modes of persecution might change but the ignorance’s and willingness to hurt each other do not.

The play illustrates these things at the personal, familial, judicial and political levels and asks actors to give everything they have to tell it.

FYI this production contains coarse language, adult content, smoke haze, strobe lighting and loud noises.

“O beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on…”

Othello, easily Shakespeare’s most relentless and tightly compressed drama, a dark, brooding thriller. A rare chance for students across NSW to see this masterpiece live.

This innovative production combines Sport for Jove’s trademark textual clarity and storytelling with a powerful cast and design – a remote military base in an occupied country where a trusted soldier will work away at the certainty of his commander like an irresistible tide.

Othello is saturated with references to water. Oceanic mystery is the poet’s chief imaginative device and source of metaphor in this study of marriage, love, sex, persuasion and the illusion of loyalty.

Venice, a city resting precariously on its own watery grave, and Cyprus, a frontier surrounded by enemies and a hostile ocean, are the battlefields upon which family, love, community, trust, ambition and jealousy are put under the severest trial.

FYI this production contains coarse language, adult content, smoke haze, strobe lighting and loud noises. Please be aware that William Shakespeare’s Othello features domestic violence, suicide and issues of hate speech and racial vilification that may be triggering.

RIVERSIDE THEATRES PRESENTS AN AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRODUCTION

THERE’S A SEA IN MY BEDROOMBASED ON THE BOOK BY MARGARET WILD, ILLUSTRATED BY JANE TANNER ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY TIM MCGARRY WITH ORIGINAL MUSIC BY PAUL STANHOPE

David is frightened of the sea. He does not like it at all, not one bit.

But one day he finds a conch shell at the beach and takes it home – and he hears the sea trapped inside. ‘Come out, sea, come out,’ he says softly. ‘I won’t hurt you.’

Based on the beloved children’s book by award-winning author Margaret Wild, There’s a Sea in my Bedroom is an immersive and theatrical introduction to live classical music, capturing the magic of a child’s fantasy world.

Returning to the stage following a sell-out Sydney Opera House premiere season in 2019, this exquisite performance weaves together captivating storytelling with a specially commissioned score from Australian composer Paul Stanhope, performed live by a string quintet of ACO musicians.

Riverside Theatres and the Australian Chamber Orchestra are proud to present this beautifully reimagined story that promises to bring moments of joy, sadness, fear, magic, and laughter.
