First to Fifty? Activity Manager, Michael Dinkelman, N7WA

Eight members have accepted the challenge to be the first to work all 50 states. This internal Mike & Key contest started on July 1st. The winner will receive a nice plaque and be the first member (in my recollection) to win an “on-the-air” Club contest.

Those accepting the Challenge include Nils and Jo

Hallstrom, Carolyn Pasquir, Richard Pasquier, Dan Hum-phrey, Ric Danielson, Curtis Hanner, and Mitch and Tyler Taylor. Dan Humphrey was the first to jump out, working

6 states the first couple days. Ric then checked in a day later with 33—way over half the final required total in just two days. Of course, the more you get, the rarer they be-come. Still that’s a significant lead Ric. Meanwhile, the Taylors are wandering about the Southeast corner of the country. I think they forgot this is a radio contest—you don’t have to visit all 50 states. Still, they graciously of-fered to set up skeds for any needy contestants. As of July 13, the last I heard was that Ric had pulled in 40 states and that Mitch had four. However, the IARU contest is coming up and it’s an easy way to get 50 real quick. Stay tuned.

The Northwest DX Convention Submitted by Michael Dinkelman, N7WA

The Pacific Northwest is fortu-nate to host three DX and Con-test Clubs– the Willamette Val-ley DXC in Portland, the British Columbia DXC in Vancouver, and, of course, our own local Western Washington DX Club. These 3 clubs compete and co-operate in several venues. One of the areas of cooperation is a traveling Convention that rotates among the Clubs. This year, the Convention will be

hosted by the WWDXC and held in Everett. This conven-tion is an excellent way to “hobnob” with members of the local DX and contest community. Not only that, but DXers and Contesters will coming from throughout the country to present seminars and teach techniques. If TV is your bag, you could almost spend a whole day watch-ing videos about DXpeditions to rare countries. Add to that a pileup contest, DXCC card checking by the DXCC manager, hospitality suite, plus Banquet and you have a mighty fine weekend devoted to the finest pur-suits within Amateur Radio. Ward/N0AX, who just gave an excellent presentation on Slovenia at our May meet-ing, has lined up the programs for the Convention which are listed elsewhere in this Relay (see the Convention flyer). Granted, the convention is the same weekend as the Club meeting. However, if you have any interest in DXing or Contesting, this is the place to be.

Picnic Contest By Dawn KC7YYB

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Hear Ye! There has been a change in the Mike & Key Pic-nic Poster Contest. I've become aware that we need yet another Category. Those who use computer generated designs need to be in a category by themselves, since hand drawn posters might not be able to achieve the "professional" look that computer/printer creations can, so we'll just have an-other niche for them. So, as it stands now there will be 3 categories for the poster contest. 1) Those done by ages 12 and under. 2) Those done by hand [not mechanically]. 3) Computer/Printer generated posters. That should make it fair for everyone. NOW, get busy and put those ideas for promoting ham radio and/or Mike & Key down on your posterboard and plan on getting in there and competing! Oh, and keep the size manageable, nothing the size of the side of a barn.

Silent Key—KG7OW Past Club Member Lee Bertrand, KG7OW, went Silent Key at the end of June. Lee had been recovering from surgery to clear several blocked arteries. Lee used to be a very active member and was a regular out at Registration during the Flea Market. Lately, he had spent the last sev-eral years pursuing his musical interests with a group of Cajun Fiddlers. I didn’t know Lee too well myself but would entertain the membership to send in anything to remember him by.

Club’s Night Out Activity Manager Michael Dinkelman, N7WA

Our second try at getting a group together for a trip to see the Mariners was wildly success-ful. Combining with the Western Washington DX Club was even better. We ended up with a group of almost 100 people between the two Clubs (of which, we are the majority). The tickets have been purchased and are in my hands for distribution.

How to get your tickets? Please send me a SASE (Self Addressed Self Stamped) envelope with a check covering the cost of your tickets ($7.50 each). I’ll return the tickets in the en-velope. If you doubt the abilities of the Postal Service, let me know and we can make other arrangements. I will NOT be at the next Club meeting so I cannot distribute them then. The game is August 21 so we have plenty of time but I would like to clear my credit card as soon as possible. I did buy a few extra tickets and have sold half of those already. We have a good chunk of Section 311 which is straight above first base. You can check out the Mariner Web page for a stadium map. It promises to be an interesting evening. For sure, bring your jackets, shirts, and hats.

Closer to Home Submitted by Jo Hallstrom KB7UFM Dxing is fun, no doubt about it, but every now and then you come across someone with a story to tell. "Bud"---W6DMN has such a story. Bud is 90 years old with a wonderful sense of hu-mor. He has been blind since the age of 12. He got his ticket in 1930 and has been active in Ham Radio ever since. His first wife died when she was 85 years old, about ten years ago. They had been married for 60 years. He said to me "you don't want to listen to an old duffer like me yacking away." I said why not do what we both like to do, listen and talk? So, we did just that for over an hour. It was a very en-joyable hour listening to stories about his chil-dren, his first Wife and now about his new wife. I love DXing but now and then you find a new friend — a little closer to home.

What I learned from Field Day by Mitch, K7TUT

I am ashamed to say that this was my first Field Day but I am happy to say that I will endeavor to never miss an-other one. I and the kids had a blast! Needless to say, as a new member, I was asked to be the Band Chairman for 2 meters as the person responsible for that had con-flicting obligations. As I understand it, he had to take a bus somewhere. I accepted the responsibility with a little trepidation but there were so many that gave advice and offered their help (especially Carolyn---tee hee!). I found after I got to Field Day that the daunting task was actu-ally very easy as many helped me get started and I thank all of you. With all this in mind, I would like to tell you what I learned from Field Day. 1. I learned that "Little Johns" chili is an alternate form of energy. He should package it and send it the Governor as we are in dire need for some new form of energy. Un-fortunately there are some rather nasty side effects as Tyler,

KD7MJO, found out after he had several helpings. Actu-ally, we all found out as our room in the barracks had windows that would not open. Thanks John! 2. I learned that some Hams take Field Day seriously as a contests and some believe it was intended to expose the public to Ham Radio and to give new Hams a chance to experience contesting and operating on bands they normally would not operate on while at the same time, gathering points. Both type of Hams are needed and they all were up to the tasks. Sometimes it caused fric-tion but it surprised me to see how little friction existed. Think about it, we had 70 people together and everyone seemed to get along almost the entire time. That alone is a testament to the organization of the event and the qual-ity of the people in this club. Don't get me wrong, there were complaints but they seemed to be less important than the overall tasks of having a good time. 3. I learned that on CW Beach I never had to worry about the porta potties running out of TP as there was plenty hanging around. 4. I learned that Alan is a masochists when it comes to climbing towers. Steve, just to let you know, as soon as Alan started shaking the 20 meter tower I would have

Field Day—from the Chair By Alan, KB7SVU Well we sure had a great field day. What a great turn out of club members and visitors. I would like to thank everyone who helped with set up. I believe we were set up in record time. Everything worked including the 20 meter antenna, thanks to the members who came out to my house to put it together before Field Day. There are a few people I would like to thank for an outstanding job, first is Carolyn Pasquier, WV7Q, for taking over while I was in Germany. She did a great job of getting the word out and promoting it, through word of mouth and E-mail. She is a great cochairmen and an en-thusiastic worker. Next I want to thank Wayne Heath and

his wife for the great job of cooking on Friday and Satur-day. Weren't they so cute in their matching chef's outfits. Then comes Rita for the big job of organizing the barracks and getting everyone in that wanted to be there overnight. It is looking like we will have a great score. I want to thank all the band chairmans and all the people who took turns operating or duping. I should also like mention that there were three articles in three different news pa-pers. I would like to tell those who were not able to come that we also had a reporter come and spend two nights with us. To see what Field day is all about. Finally I want to thank everyone who helped with teardown, we were down and finished by 1:30 PM. Lets all start thinking about next years field day, so that we can have another great

either been down the tower in 2 seconds, changing my clothes afterwards or beating him on the top of the head! 5. I learned that the people on CW Beach kept trying to convince me that being there was a punishment of some sort. Sorry guys but living on the beach for a weekend does not seem to be a punishment in my book but just keep telling us that and maybe someday we will believe it. 6. I learned that CW is still in my blood. Thanks to Mike and crew for helping me to get adjusted as it has been many years since I received code that fast. I recom-mend everyone to give it a shot. 7. I learned that good food (thanks to Chef Wayne and company) can be found at Field Day, that Brandon likes to play with fire, that we have a great bunch of officers and trustees, that Jack really uses that cane to intimidate us into submission....heh heh, and that the friendly rivalry between CW Beach and the SSBers will escalate sometime in the future. There is an old saying, "Never wake a sleeping giant" and I fear some of you are in for a big surprise. When you least ex-pect it, the CW Beach giant is going to wake up. Alan better get that po-tato gun ready! 8. I learned that I could leave the kids to operate and never have to worry about them as many kept a watch over them, taught them how to operate a Field Day, joked with them, laughed with them and kept them from harms way. Thank you to all who took an interest in all of the kids as Tyler and Aaron came home excited and

from what I understand, every kid who was not licensed now wants to get a license. 9. I learned that Larry, our resident Army Mars State Di-rector and former Officer, really liked to read comic books while he served. Special note....I do not know all of those who are in the club and have served in the mili-tary but I want to say, "Thank you for your service to our country whether in peacetime or war!" Sorry I have to get that in as I am a firm believer that we don’t say it often enough. 10. I learned that Field Day is a great way to get to know the other members of the club and learn more about dif-ferent aspects of Ham Radio. I never heard a satellite before, never saw Packet Radio (thanks Mike also for all your help as I could not have done it myself), and I never helped get a tower set up. 11. Lastly I learned that I have a lot of new friends now and that Field Day creates a bond between Hams. I will remember my first Field Day for a long time and I know the boys will remember it as one of those times that can never be replaced. Ok, so when do we start planning for next year? Who's buying the food? Wayne, you cooking again? Please say Yes. Carolyn, you better be back in time to be temp Chairman, if needed...tee hee!. Jack, who's Field Day Chairman? Mike, we need to make a sign at the road coming down to CW Beach to let people know you are there! Lets get cracking we have less than 12 months to go and I want next years Field Day to be as much fun as this one was. Congrats and thank you to all who volun-teered their time to make this a great Field Day that will always remain a cherished memory.

CW Beach—in retrospect By Mike, N7WA This was actually a scary CW Beach for me. For the first time, nobody who was at my “first” CW Beach was going to be at Fort Flagler. Granted, we had plenty of support from our current regulars but when Jim/K7ND told me he wouldn’t be here at all this year, it was like a last invisible support brace had been pulled. Jim has always made it up in some shape or form (even if only for breakfast) , and I have always thought of him as the “Old Man” of CW Beach. But alas, in 2001, we were to be on our own. I did miss you Jim. Still, we did well. We had our highest ever point total, there were no real equipment problems, both stations were manned for the majority of hours, and I think we gained a couple converts. The new C3S worked great and was a pleasure to put up and take down. The weather was great—nary a sprinkle between the time we

drove in the front gate and back out again for home. Got-cha’s included a mast we couldn’t raise higher than 20 feet, no 80M vertical, and the return of mutual QRM from the bluff on 20 Meters. We have plans for fixing all 3 problems next year. Somehow, we also got TP’d. Got plans for fix’n that too. We’ll be losing another CW Beach regular as Atsushi W7KN/JR1NKN will be returning home to Japan. He has been a real pleasure and treasure down on the Beach and will be missed. Fortunately, we may have found two more to replace him in Mitch Taylor and Jim Hamlin who both seemed to enjoy their stays on the Beach. Hopefully they will return. Of course, the Beach would not have been possible except for three more Beach stalwarts, Chuck and Karen Jones and John McGee. Thank you all — looking forward to next year. Finally, thank you Alan Hughes and Carolyn Pasquier for organizing the entire event. CW Beach is always fun but the fun is raised exponentially when the entire team is organized.

error and solved it prior to the start time. The 15-meter rotor had some problems but Alan and his crew fixed that in about 30 minutes, again before start time. We even had a coordinated start time this year using 2-meter sim-plex and a receiver tuned to WWV. Then there was the expected midnight raid by the CW beach gang on the sideband site. The sidebanders retali-ated this year, but they have some work to do to keep up with Mike Dinkelman (N7WA) and his bunch. Saturday night we had another great dinner with the left over potluck and the usual hamburgers and hotdogs. Wayne and Diane added a roast beef to the menu for that feed. All stations were manned nearly all of the time with only a

few gaps reported. The Band Chairs did a great job. I believe that we will score better than we did last year and maybe move up in the rankings. The site teardown went very smooth. We had enough people stay to get the job done by 2:00 PM Sunday after-noon that included a clean-up sweep of both the SSB site and the Wagon Wheel. I stayed over Sunday night in the Wagon Wheel and talked to the park ranger on Monday morning. I wanted to know if there were any problems. She said there were no problems and the Mike & Key ARC was always a great group to have at the park.

I believe that everyone had a good time and I want to thank all of the people who worked so hard to make this year’s outing such a success. Start planning for the last full weekend in June next year for ‘Field Day 2002’.

class. Public Service: Brendan Burget (KD7IKV): The next committee meeting will follow imme-diately after the July General Meeting. Collect-ing all pictures from Field Day. Please send Brendan any pictures you might have. The public service net is running again, 7PM each Thursday on 146.82. Field Day: Alan Hughes (KB7SVU): Discussed Field Day MVP and passed our select to the Awards Committee. Alan made a motion to sell the two old antennas at a silent auction at the picnic. The motion was seconded by Bren-dan. The motion carries. We need to buy a tarp to cover the trailer and Alan would like a load of gravel to keep it from sinking into his wet yard. Picnic: Dawn Humphrey (KC7YYB): Plans for the picnic at Cedar Park are moving right along. We need to get more tables and per-mission to bring the BBQ. Old Business Carolyn (WV7Q), asked for clarification of the board's directive at the last board meeting re-garding the latest proposed bylaws changes. She stated that she is a member of the newly formed bylaws committee. Since the ap-pointed chairperson, Jan, resigned during the month, the committee is now in need of direc-tion. During discussion, it was determined that all five changes proposed this year were inva-lid for lack of the necessary 3 signatures. But,

it has been 4 ½ years since the bylaws have been reviewed, so it was decided that a bylaws committee should be formed to review the en-tire package to make sure it still meets the needs of the club. Mike (N7WA) will put an announcement in the Relay, asking for volunteers for this bylaws committee. The ARES agreement to use our repeater needs to be reviewed and updated. Since we don’t have the current agreement available for review we will delay discussion until the next board meeting. New Business Carolyn (WV7Q): Is planning a committee awareness day in order to encourage activity and involvement. This is planned as part of the August General Meeting. Each committee will be highlighted and the committee chairs will give a brief overview of the their commit-tee. Nils (W7RUJ): Has the 6m rotator and he is fixing it. Mary (W7QGP): New Salvation Army Captain is coming. We need to be on our best behav-ior during this transition period. Brendan (KD7IKV): Renton River Days parade is coming up. Do we want to participate in it? Brendan will follow up on this. Jack (N7ZS): Proposes that we spend $500 as

a donation to Fort Flagler. Alan moves that we spend $500 out of the public service budget. Jim seconds the motion. The motion carries. Steve makes a motion that we regularly have a line item in the budget for frequency defense. Mark seconds the motion. There is support for frequency defense, but concern about making motions on mandatory budget items. The mo-tion fails. The secretary agrees to note the need for this new budget item and bring it up for discussion when next years budget is being created. Nils (W7RUJ): Reports that the staff of Fort Flagler is tickled to have the Mike and Key ARC come up for Field Day. The barracks were left in excellent condition. Upon inspec-tion of the bunkers the only garbage found was a single gum wrapper! We are an exceptional group and welcome anytime. There being no further business a motion by Brendan (KD7IKV) seconded by Curtis (N7MWC) to adjourn was made, and the chair-man closed the meeting at 9:20 PM. Attested: Curtis Hanner, N7MWC Secretary
