I hope you enjoyed our Local Unit Training on Jan. 15, at Christ United Methodist Church, and the Mid-Winter Event on Feb. 19, at Keolumana UMC. I was also invited to attend the Pacific Islanders UMW meeting and feast on Feb. 11, at Waimanalo UMC, and was thrilled to see our Tongan and Samoan sisters in action, under the leadership of Pasepa Ngauamo and others. We have more events coming up where we can gather and praise God together. On Saturday, March 5, at Trinity UMC in Pearl City, will be our Hawaii Mission Festival. This event is under the leadership of our UMW Mission Coordinator for Education & Interpretation Minja Choe, and the Hawaii UMC Global Ministries committee which is open to all: men, women, youth and children. We are thrilled to have retired missionary, Norma Kehrberg, to present “Mission in an Age of Global Christianity” and Maxine Wheeler to present “Hugging the World”, for the children. These women were both teachers at the California-Pacific School of Christian Mission last summer. The Mission Festival will also have more! Plan to come! Then on Sunday, March 6, will be the gathering of Church Women United, as we join with other Christian women in Hawaii and around the world in a World Day of Prayer. This event will be held at First UMC in Honolulu. Then there are service projects being suggested by Mission Coordinator for Social Action Clara Fau’olo. Additionally, I was called by Rev. Charlene Zuill of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Hawaii, asking for UMW members who may have a portable sewing machine and in mid-March be involved with mending garments for Carolyn‟s cont prt 2 UH students for a small charge (perhaps 25c) and the money raised go to Mission Giving. Call Pastor Charlene at 949-1210. Become involved! We can’t forget ourselves, we need Finding Peace, and that opportunity will come at our One-Day Spiritual Retreat on April 9 at Harris UMC. Our Mission Coordinator for Spiritual Growth Heimoana Ofamo’oni is chairing this event at which we will also honor our Quiet Disciples. Come and learn how other Christian women have found peace in their lives. We know we learn from each other. Don’t forget about our Susannah Wesley Community Center. They have had BIG cut-backs from government social services funding and need our financial support, both as United Methodist Women and members of United Methodist Churches in Hawaii. Have a “Susie Sunday”, have a program about what the Center is doing, make a pledge, and have a speaker and video about the work they do. Remember, it is our mission center in Hawaii, also supported by Women’s Division and where our US2 Missionary Intern, Katie Monfortie, works. Then will come Easter and the celebration of our Risen Savior. Your Hawaii District UMW Board will be meeting again after Easter to help with the planning for our School of Christian Mission in Hawaii this summer from July 7-10, at Camp Pineapple808 outside of Wahiawa. Scholarship funds are available ($50), which will help to pay for at least 25% of the cost of $200. You need to be thinking ahead and saving as I hope many of you can attend. District Officer Pasepa Ngauamo is working closely with the Tongan women to encourage their participation with United Methodist Women. She reports that the Tongan’s have their own UMW committees, with conclusions that it’s hard for the women to change. Much prayer is needed for unification among Tongan UMW with Hawaii

Farewell from Maureen Jacob: To my sisters in Christ - Thank you for giving me the opportunity to get to know you, and for the brief time I served you. Moving home to Missouri was a difficult decision. Already, I miss my involvement with United Methodist Women and the friends I made. My family and I are very appreciative of your prayers, as my father is chronically ill and we’re thankful for each day he is still with us. God's Blessings to you all,

Maureen 1378 Macklin Dr. Ellisville, MO 63021

Scope of isle farm labor abuse

case widens

By Nelson Daranciang Jan. 15, 2011 The exploitation of

impoverished Thai farm workers by

a Los Angeles-based labor

contractor went on for longer than

federal prosecutors had previously

disclosed and involved more

workers and more growers in more

states, including Del Monte and

Aloun Farms on Oahu and a

macadamia nut farm on the Big

Island, according to a federal

indictment unsealed yesterday.

[…]

When the workers tried to flee, the

defendants threatened them with

physical harm, kept them under

guard and in some instances locked

them in their living quarters when

they were not working, the

indictment said.

Spiritual Life Retreat

Theme: Finding peace. Coming up, Saturday, April 9, from 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at Harris United Methodist Church, where we will honor every local unit’s Quiet Disciple: see criteria below, and registration form w/details at the bottom of this newsletter.

Quiet Disciple-2011 Criteria: Hawaii District United Methodist Women will again honor our Quiet disciples during the Spiritual Life Retreat. It is the local unit who select their special Quiet Disciple. It can be any woman in your church who supports United Methodist Women. She can be any age, but is a woman whose ministry to others is accomplished in a quiet, unassuming manner and the influence of her presence is a gift which enriches your fellowship. Her example is one who truly pursues faith, love and peace in action and is a blessing to everyone whose life she touches. There will only be one Quiet Disciple per unit. The only requirement is that your write-up fits on a half sheet size paper (5.5 x 8.5 positioned vertically) and may include a picture, as long as the picture and words fit on the half sheet size page. Your photo ready copy is what will be printed. Deadline for submittal is Friday, March 25, and should be sent to our Vice President Leola Nisa, who will work with a committee in creating a memory book.

Mission Coordinator for Spiritual Growth

God’s Assistance The Lord thinks on you; He is your deliverer, your strength, your shield, your refuge and a very present help in trouble if you will wait for Him, trust in Him, and choose His precepts. Your help comes from God, and is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Fear not, for God is with you; be not dismayed for He is your God; He will strengthen you; yes, He will help you; yes He will uphold you with the right hand of His righteousness. Yes, fear not, for the Lord your God will hold your right hand, and say unto you, “Fear not; I will help you.” The angel of the Lord will go before you, encamp round about you, make the crooked places straight, and the Lord will be with you, never failing you, neither forsaking you, so fear not, neither be dismayed, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. Come boldly unto the throne of grace that you may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need; and the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say. The meek will He guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach His way. He shall guide you with counsel and instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go. He will guide you with His eye and afterward receive you to glory. Howbeit when He, the spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.

Mission Coordinator for Social Action “Meals for Our Neighbors” is 2011‟s Social Action Project The UMW Social Action

Committee has announced it is

launching an important program

called, “Meals for Our

Neighbors” beginning in April.

All UMW units will have an

opportunity to participate in this

wonderful two-part program that

will support immigrant students

and families living in Hawaii

toward their path to citizenship

and family reunification.

Part I: Meals for quarterly

immigration law clinics/”Know

Your Rights” workshops. Three UMW units will co-

share to sponsor and provide the

dinner meal for the immigrants

signed up for the free quarterly

immigration law clinics, to be

held in April, July, and Oct.,

2011. Units will either prepare

the meal or cater the meal. It is

estimated that 100 people may

attend these clinics.

April clinic: Eglish/Tongan

July clinic: English/Korean

October clinic: English/Filipino

Date, time, and location tbd

The Hawaii Coalition for

Immigration Reform (Shirley

Kuma, social action coordinator

at Keolumana, is the FACE

representative on the council) has

agreed to sponsor the lawyers

needed for the law clinics.

Student volunteers from the

University of Hawaii (UH) as

well as the Wesley Foundation at

UH will help with the clinics.

We may need some volunteer

interpreters from our Methodist

churches.

Part II: Meals/Snack Packs for

students at Wesley Foundation-

UH.

Mission cont prt2 Student volunteers from the

University of Hawaii (UH) as

well as the Wesley Foundation at

UH will help with the clinics.

We may need some volunteer

interpreters from our Methodist

churches.

Part II: Meals/Snack Packs for

students at Wesley Foundation-

UH.

The Wesley Foundation at UH

provides meals and snacks,

activities and a safe nurturing

“home away from home” support

community for college students,

which include a number of

immigrant students. One UMW

unit (or two smaller units can co-

share) will be assigned a month

in which it will donate a grant of

$200 to defray cost of Tuesday

meals for students at the Wesley

Foundation.

The same UMW unit will

make 4 dozen Snack Packs for

students unable to make the meal

times because of class schedules.

Recommended items for the

Snack Packs include granola

bars, popcorn, animal cookies,

cheese or peanut butter crackers.

Many of the students that

come to the Wesley Foundation

participate in Wesley’s outreach

programs, including cooking and

feeding the homeless through H-

5 that runs the Next Step shelter

in Kakaako, as well as organizing

events for the children living at

Vancouver House, the

transitional housing next door to

the Wesley Foundation.

Mission cont prt3 How to Sign Up for “Meals for

Our Neighbors.” Please call me, Clara Fau’olo,

before March 10 if possible so

that we can begin planning the

April event.

UMW units signed up for

April/May/June will prepare the

meal for the April law clinic,

July/Aug/Sept for July, and

Oct/Nov/Dec for October.

UMW units will deliver snack

packs to the Wesley Foundation

(1918 University Avenue) on the

last Friday (by 6 pm) of the

month prior to their assigned

month. UMW unit should call

Rev. Charlene Zuill, campus

minister at Wesley Foundation, at

949-1210 early that week to

notify her what time you will be

coming on Friday.

UMW units will send a $200

check payable to Hawaii District

UMW to Emma Gaboy (see pg5

col 1), and the UMW will cut a

check to Wesley Foundation and

mail it to them.

If you are interested in

volunteering to be an interpreter,

call Shirley Kuma at 256-5282.

This is going to be an exciting

project in which all units can

participate to help our

“neighbors.” Thank you in

advance to all of you for your

kokua.

Mission Today Mission Today is a program of the Women's Division. The purpose of Mission Today is to: ●Energize United Methodist Women to be more involved in mission through prayer, study and action. ●Increase contacts between units and mission personnel and mission projects so the United Methodist Women understand where their money goes. ●Encourage the use of mission resources through United Methodist Women. ●Expand concepts of mission, Including social justice as mission To become a Mission Today unit, the local unit must satisfy at least 8 out of 19 criteria listed in the “IS YOUR UNIT A MISSION TODAY UNIT” form. The form with full description is included in this newsletter. If you read them carefully, you’ll realize that it’s not difficult to become a Mission Today unit. During 2010, 4 local units in Hawaii District UMW met the criteria: Aiea, Christ, Harris, and Keolumana. I hope to see many more units qualify for the certificate during 2011.
