POTENTATE’S MESSAGE

Nobles and Ladies;

Spring is ready to spring that means parade season is right around the corner so let’s talk about that. First thing, yes your

lady may ride in a parade with you but only in units that have a safe passenger seat and only one lady. We don't want the

public to misunderstand that the Shrine is not a fraternity. The next thing I would like to address is the parade list. The

Shrine Office put out a list of parades; these parades are from communities that have a unit in them. The times and dates of

the parades on the list was confirmed by the office. The office will publish other parades IF the dates, times, have been con-

firmed and what unit{s} will parade there. To put out a long list of parades with inaccurate times, dates and not knowing if

any unit is even parading there is as we have in the past is Ludicrous. Remember Kaaba is charged by the parades we have

units in. No Shriner will be allowed to parade without a current dues card this rule will be up to the unit to enforce if a unit

permits non Shriners to parade they will be barred from parading. We all need to keep our dues up to date. Kaaba is the host

of the Iowa Shrine Bowl this year the parade is on July 21st it would be great to have a lot of Kaaba units participat-

ing. More detailed information on the Shrine bowl is in the Kaabagram, and you can always contact the office.

Brother David Glanz PP and the Blackhawk Shrine club has arranged for a bus to take Kaaba nobles, their ladies and pro-

spective nobles to the Chicago Hospital for their open house on June 3rd. There is no charge for the trip. New nobles will

have first priority. The open house is a wonderful experience that all nobles should attend you won’t regret it, for details

contact the office.

CSSA Ceremonial will be in Branson this year on August 22-24 I hope we have a good turnout I know we had a hell of a

good time last time it was in Branson.

Kaaba will be having candy days in front of stores I am arranging a few in the metro Quad Cities area if you would like to do

one in your area for Kaaba contact me and I will be glad to help. Kaaba needs this fund raiser to be a success since the last

two fund raisers failed due to the fact Shriner did not support them but that water under the bridge. Let’s get out there get

new Shriners and have some fun

Nobles and Ladies:

A new year has started in my journey to be Potentate of KAABA in 2020. It has been a wonderful journey meeting new Nobles from around the Kaaba realm. I continue to learn and listen as I travel to the various clubs. I am adjusting to retirement as of the beginning of this year. Trying to balance my obligations to the Shrine and other areas in my life. In doing so a friend during morning coffee started a conversation on the old building that was to be torn down known as the Goncho apartments. That conversation set me to thinking. He was admiring the metal pillars in the front and wondered about salvaging them. He could see the beauty of the pillars. Sure, it was a handsome building in its day. But then, there's been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind. The summer sun's beat down on that old building till it is in poor repair. Yet, my friend called it beautiful. That set me to thinking. I walked out and just stood there, gazing at that old building. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce a beautiful building worth saving. It came to me then. Shriners are a lot like that, you and I. Only it's on the inside that the beauty grows with us. Sure we turn silver gray too ... and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. But the Good Lord knows what He's doing. And as the years pass He's busy using the hard wealth of our lives to care for his children, the dry spells and the stormy seasons to do a job of being Shriners thus beautifying our souls. They took the Goncho apartment building down today and hauled it away to beautify a corner of town with six new con-dos. And I reckon someday you and I'll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Great Architect of Universe has for us. And I suspect we'll be more beautiful then for the Shrine work we've done here ... and just maybe even add a bit of beauty to our Father's house. A challenge to all, is to let that beauty inside each of you grow bright by promoting the Shrine and raising money to care for God’s children and yes have fun doing it. I would like to thank you for once again electing me as a Divan Officer for 2018. I am happy to be serving as your High Priest and Prophet for this year.

Another busy year is being planned. In addition to the many club meetings and parades, we will be attending the KAABA Potentate Ball on February 3rd, the Za-Ga-Zig Potentate Ball on February 24th and the El Kahir Potentate Ball on May 5th. KAABA will be hosting the Shrine Bowl in July, and we will attend Central States Shrine Association in August.

Diana and I are looking forward to seeing all of you, and you’re Ladies, at these many events. Reginald Hughell

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

I am so honored to be your Oriental Guide for 2018. I have been busy visiting clubs and just returned from Orien-

tal Guide School. There was alot to take in a short amount of time and alot of great training on becoming a leader

in our temple. I'm looking forward to helping our temple grow.

Parade season will soon be upon us, although we don’t have a full parade schedule in front of us we all know

where local parades are so let’s share with everyone instead feeling we are not being included on the calendar. Al-

so remember you are representing Shriners International and Shriners Hospital for Children when we are parading

before, during and after, let’s keep our fraternity in a positive light.

Zimmerman Honda In March, the Hospital drivers had 3 Patients going up to Chicago on 1 day for ap-pointments. We called around to get a van that would take them all together. A rental company was going to make it possible, except we would have to pay for 2 days, be-cause their office would be closed when we return from the Hospital. So Dave Glanz checked to see if we might be able to rent one from Zimmerman’s, since we had pur-chased our new van from them. The person who Dave talked to said they don’t rent vehicles, but he would get back with him. After a couple of days, Dave received a call from Sales Manager, Brian, who said they would have a van for Kaaba. When Dave ar-rived at Zimmerman’s, owner Mark Zimmerman, said that we could use his personal conversion van and he would cover all of the expenses for this trip, including gas and tolls. Milton C. Beck January 16, 2018

Milton Beck of 6616 Cresthill Drive No 1-C, Davenport, IA pass away on January 16, 2018. Milton was a

32 Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was a member of Davenport Lodge 37, Mo-

hassan Grotto, Kaaba Shrine, Buffalo Bill Club, Davenport Consistory and Clan 103. He also was a mem-

ber and past commander of the Legion of Honor, president of the Kaaba Dad's Club, secretary of the

High Twelve Club and an active hospital driver. In his retirement, Milton enjoyed being a hospital driver,

transporting children and families to the Shriners Hospital. He is survived by his wife Margaret.

Forrest "Frosty" LaVerne Bain February 24, 2018 Forrest "Frosty" LaVerne Bain passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home in Moulton, Io-wa. Frosty was a member of the Mason's and joined the KAABA Shriners unit in 1980 and later became a member of the Jesters Shrine unit. He enjoyed parading with the Shriners for 30 years as a RoadRun-ner and the Ragtop unit.

Norman Tweed March 1, 2018 Norman F. Tweed of 911 Hale Road-Lot 178, Shelbyville, Indiana, formerly of Columbus Junction, Iowa passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Ashford Place in Shelbyville. Norman was a member of the Louisa County Shrine Club, The Crazy Ford Unit, and the Kaaba Shrine. He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly.

Requirements to be a member of the Kaaba Legion of Honor Unit

(1) Need to be a Noble or a Shrine/Mason

(2) Be a Military Veteran

Interested Nobles/Veterans are welcome. We honor ourselves as Veterans and also

support our hospitals and helping the Kids.

Responsibilities: Present Colors at Kaaba meetings, North & South Shrine Bowl,

Masonic functions and other events. Participate in parades and compete with other

Shrine Legion of Honor Unit drill Teams at CSSA (Central States Shrine Association).
