POTENTATE’S MESSAGE

“Kids are Keen” in 2014

Nobles and Ladies,

It is just amazing how fast time goes by. When a Noble starts in the Divan line as an Oriental Guide he is full of energy, goals and ideas for what he wants to accomplish for the KIDS. Goals become ideas and ideas become projects; everyone tries to get all the projects done. All of a sudden your time on the Divan is almost over. The one thing you cannot control is the time factor. In my case I could only wish that I had more time to try and get more things done during my year as Potentate. Hard to believe the first quarter of the year is almost completed. On behalf of the Nobles of Kaaba and myself, I extend kudos and a big thank you to Illustrious Sir Roger Kadel for his service and leadership as Potentate 2013 of Kaaba

Temple.

I would like to thank everyone that drove so far on a cold winter night to come to our Poten-tate’s Ball. To the Nobles that informed me that they would not come to my ball unless I had live music and then did not come anyway, the ten piece band was very good. I even tried dancing with Lady Patty and my cane. It did not work that well even with the assistance of medicine and non-medicine products. What a great evening we had. I especially enjoyed my

breakfast “ketchup” shower.

As part of our “fun” for the year, Hospital Day in Chicago is Sunday, June 1st. There will be a charter bus available at the cost of $25 per person. All Nobles who joined the Shrine in 2011 to now, and have never been to the hospital, attend for free as do their ladies. Depar-ture/return times will be forthcoming. Please, please plan to attend. There will be tours of the hospital, lunch, a program featuring patients, and the infamous “World’s Shortest Parade”. Anyone who would want to parade would definitely be welcome to do so; just let the Kaaba office know. This is just a great day and really drives home what we Shriners are all about, the care of our kids. Several Divan members attended Divan Day at the hospital on March 25th. We had the opportunity to hear from a patient’s mother of their experience at the hos-pital. What an incredible story she shared of the care of her son. Our doctors and staff are

outstanding.

A reminder that on April 1st at 12:00 Noon, the Kaaba Shrine Bowl Committee is hosting a press luncheon at the Masonic Center honoring the Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game play-ers, coaches and cheerleaders from our Temple area. Please plan to attend and show your

support for these young men and women.

I encourage each and every one of you to be an active Noble of Kaaba. It takes all of us

working together to make our Temple grow and take care of our Shriner children.

Are you going with me to the Imperial Sessions in Minneapolis, MN in July 2014??

For the love of kids,

Don Courter, Potentate

CHIEF RABBAN’S COMMENTS

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

I'm back!!

Back on January 19, Lady Kathy and were heading to Iowa City. I felt a bit odd, but thought nothing of it. We had a very pleasant day, although I mentioned that I felt a little off balance. On Monday, the 20th, I went to work at the usual time. The drive to work was a tad dif-ficult, but I had no idea what was going on. I told the boss that I didn't feel well and

drove home at 9:30 am. I tinkered around the house the rest of the day.

On Tuesday, the 21st, I woke up and told Kathy that I felt “weird “. I felt off balance and just not quite right. I had just about gotten over a cold, so Kathy thought I might have developed an inner ear infection. She took me to my regular doctor. He didn't find any obvious signs of an infection but said I had a knotted up muscle in my lower back. He gave me a little adjustment, and prescribed an antibiotic and something for motion sickness. (By this time, I was suspecting a stroke, but thought “it can’t be. I

never get sick. " )

On Wednesday, the 22nd, Kathy was at work, when I called her, and said that I could no longer write my name. She called the Doctor, and he said to get me to the emer-gency room right away. Kathy came home and took me to Washington County Hospi-tal's E R. I had an I.V. started and they gave me an MRI. This confirmed a stroke. They wanted me to get further evaluation in Iowa City. We chose The University in case I

needed a stint or any other “tricky " procedure.

I spent 3 days (and two very long nights) in the hospital. I was released on Friday, but was back at their E R on the following Wednesday. After three MRIs, it was deter-mined that I had a small blood clot in a vein in the pons area of my brain. It affected my entire right side. But after intense therapy (physical, occupational and massage), your kind thoughts, countless prayers, Lady Kathy's support, my stubbornness and

the grace of God, I am getting very close to back to my version of "normal".

I tell you all this so you know what has been going on with me the past couple months, and want you to use my story as a “wake up call“. I didn't have super high blood pressure, nor was my cholesterol level alarmingly high. Stroke does not “run in“ my family nor do I have a heart condition . It just happened. And it can and does happen to anyone. But to eliminate some things that can lead to stroke is very wise

indeed.

Keep track of your blood pressure and get your cholesterol checked regularly .Try to eat less fried food. Get some exercise. Take care of yourselves and those you love. And if you feel “weird”, go get checked out. Don't be in denial, because it CAN hap-

pen to you.

Again, my Lady Kathy and I want to thank you all for everything and we promise to

resume our normal duties in the month of April.

Yours in Faith Vern Rode Chief Rabban

Message from Assistant Rabban

Nobles and Ladies,

We have much to be thankful for as a temple. I was able to attend the Assistant Rabban conference in March 2014 and had the opportunity to talk with my counterparts from temples across this great nation. We had many discussion on how our temple was functioning, and how we saw their future. For temples that are about the same size, I be-lieve that we are doing better then most. Some larger temples had better outlooks than

others did.

Imperial forecasts that KAABA Shiners’ will in the next two (2) years fall below the one thousand (1000)-membership level. At the present time we are not that far from hav-ing their prediction come true. I know that membership is being discussed with in every organization that we belong to. So please do not be dismayed when you hear it repeat-edly. What we can do is creative clubs that present and perspective nobles would and be willing to join. Think out side of the box, some of the ideas that I heard were “shooting club, “smoker club“, these nobles smoked cigar and discussed the quality of their cigars choice, after that had dinner. Another club was “under 40 club” of age of the club and when you past the upper age limits you are requested to resign. Has anyone thought

about forming a fishing club?

Other temples had some very creative ways of fund raising, one temple had a “MEAT” raffle, there nobles spoke of making around 12 to 18 thousand a year. Other re-lyed on their circus, or rodeo, golf torments, car show. Most of the larger temples in the larger cities use these where there is a support population of more than one activity on

any one given week. We in Kaaba land must think outside the box and be creative.

Several of Kaaba club and units are in the process of holding raffles to help sup-port their club or unit. Ft Madison Shrine Club is holding a Teddy Bear raffle. They have a 4-foot tall bear with the Shriners logo on it’s paw. The Legion of Honor in Davenport has a Legion of Honor quilt that they will be raffling off. Let’s support any club or unit in

their quest to help them self.

One of the laws for a successful team is “One is too small a number to achieve greatness”. Do not wait to be asked, volunteer, greatness waits. No one individual, with in Kaaba is or, can do ever thing by themselves. It will take all of us working together to archive any goal for any project that we undertake. Let us join with each other, in ma-

son’s fellowship, improving each other’s lives.

Here it is time for the Spring Kaabagram. I sure am ready for Spring. Mother Nature seems to have a great love of Winter this year! My Lady, Mary, and I have enjoyed many Shrine activities so far in 2014, but the weather did cause us to miss some meetings, es-

pecially Dubuque and Blackhawk Club. We are sorry about that, but safety came first.

The Annual Meeting/Installation of Officers was held January 11, starting our 2014 year for Kaaba. Another big event for January was the Kaaba Potentate/First Lady Ball and Breakfast held at SteepleGate Best Western Inn at Davenport. It was a lot of fun. Check

out the photos on the Kaaba website.

The Club and Units meeting was postponed from February 1 until March 15. We were at the Child Safety Identification Program (in conjunction with the 10

th anniversary of Unity

Point, Trinity) in Bettendorf. Approximately 300 children were fingerprinted, DNA taken, video and photo ID done with a CD given the parents/caregivers. None of the informa-tion is retained on the computers and this is a very worthwhile program. Hopefully, the CDs will never be used, but there is comfort in knowing that a child’s ID is quickly avail-

able for authorities if needed.

Mary and I attended the Za Ga Zig Potentate/ First Lady Ball/Breakfast in Des Moines on March 1 and 2. Again, weather made it interesting. I went to the Ottumwa meeting Friday evening and then on to Des Moines. It was snowing by the time we got there. Thankfully,

the snowfall didn’t accumulate like forecast and their Ball was successful.

Activities, besides regular meetings, for March include the Club and Units meeting and the Benefit for our Chief Rabban Vern Rode. So glad that Vern is on the road to recovery and will be happy to see him back at Kaaba functions. Our Potentate’s hip surgery is

taking place as I write this (March 11). Prayers for his speedy recovery!!

The Onion Sales time is upon us. Please revisit those you have sold to in the past years as well as obtaining new customers. Onions are due to arrive around the second week

of April.

Parade season is just around the corner. Let’s get those Units out there and wear our

Fez. Parades are fun for all!!!

Kaaba has Amy Miller (Ron’s Lady) working on the Kaaba web site and she is going to the Clubs explaining and trying to get each Club to set up its activities on the Kaaba Google calendar. She can help get this accomplished and should add to the Calendar’s

accurateness for all.

When I am not attending Shrine events, I go to my Blue Lodge meetings. It is good to see Degree work being done. Remember these new Masonic members can become our

new Shrine members!! Let’s increase our membership numbers this year!!!

See you at meetings and later at parades as that time gets here! Wear your Fez and re-

member to have fun and it’s for the kids!!!

Message from The Oriental Guide

Dear Nobles Thank you for your support in the December elections. I will do my best to fulfill my du-ties as your new Oriental Guide. It was great to see so many Nobles come out and sup-port Kaaba. Hopefully, we will continue to have many representatives from all Clubs and Units at our Temple meetings. As the "New Kid on the Block", I will be looking to each of you for advice and guidance. Our Illustrious Sir Potentate Don Courter is emphasizing the importance of membership. I will do my part to spread the word of our great philanthropy which is healing the chil-dren and our wounded warriors in our several hospitals. After a really great three weeks’ vacation in February, my Lady Kathy and I attended the O.G. school at Tampa, Florida in March. It was a learning experience and very helpful. It was also great meeting all my new CSSA counterparts and exchanging information and new ideas. The International Shrine emphasizes on membership by getting new "good" Nobles. The Black Camel is not all the blame of losing membership, part of the blame is not keeping the members we have. International Shrine also emphasizes on: (1) Shrine Masons "having fun". (2) Balance: work - "family" - "shrine". (3) "Team Work" among the Noble and their Lady. I am looking forward to getting busy with all my duties as your club representative. March is Onion sales, starting our Parade season. Hopefully our Illustrious Sir Potentate Don Courter and our Chief Rabban Vernon Rode will be doing better with their health issues and let's keep them in our prayers. I am looking forward to a great year with a lot of fun. Shriners having fun and helping kids! Johan "MO" Muller Oriental Guide

WORDS FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Almighty GOD, in whom we put our TRUST, accept our thanks for your presence in our

lives. Thank you for your love, the love we share with one another, and for KAABA. And

YOUR HEALING love that reaches out to young children through the doctors, hospitals

and care-givers our KAABA offers and gives financial and physical support. The drivers

and pilots that take the patients to the Shrine hospitals deserve special thanks for their

contributions of time, effort and sacrifice.

In preparing to write an article for the KAABAGRAM, as well as preparing for a Bible

study class, it seems most appropriate to refer directly to the Bible for help; (for you and

me). You and I already know, we put our trust in GOD so where could we get better help

than from the word of GOD? Today I went to the book of psalms, to verses 47 & 48, 41

through 46, in that order, in the King James Version of the Bible. (They read like this, and

I Quote, (47) "And I will delight myself in your commandments, Which I love." (48) "My

hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on your

statutes." (41) " Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord - Your salvation according to

Your word." (42)" So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust in Your

word. (43) And take not thee word of truth out of my mouth, For I have hoped in Your" or-

dinances." (44) "So shall I keep Your law continually, Forever and ever." (45) "And I will

walk at liberty For I seek Your precepts. (46) 'I will speak of Your testimonies also before

kings, And will not be ashamed.'

It is refreshing to me to read and meditate on the word of God, in whom I put my trust,

and it is my hope and prayer that you do to.

May GOD BLESS YOU and KEEP YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND

A Little of This and That by Carl

Let’s see if you really know the history of Kaaba.

1.How old is our Kaaba Shrine? 128 or 136 years.

2.Did we have more than one name?

3.Was our Shrine the first West of the Mississippi?

4.What was our designated area when first organized?

5.What is the number of our Shrine organization within Imperial?

6.Was the Mississippi River ever called by another name?

7.Did we ever have a dispute with another Shrine Temple on territory?

1. If you said 128 years, you are correct. As a Shrine unit we are 136.

2. Yes. The first being Pyramid for 8 years. Duplicate name with East Coast unit, so we had to choose another name.

3. Yes

4. From the Mississippi River to the West Coast, and Canada to Mexico.

5. 10 We are pretty old!

6. Yes. The local Indians called it Mechesebe. Meaning, Great River. The white settlers misunderstood the pronunciation.

7. Yes, two of them. Medinah Temple in Chicago because they objected to our signing up men on the Illinois side of the river as members. Settled by Imperial going half way between the Temples in Illinois. El Kahir disputed our rights toward Iowa City. At the time they were many times bigger than Kaaba. Settled by Kaaba having jurisdiction in 34 counties, and

concurrent jurisdiction in 3 others.

Noble Milton Beck was chosen to be the Shriner of the Year for 2013. Milt has spent untold hours on the highway going back and forth to the Chicago Hospital. Not only as a member of the Board of Governors at Chicago, but the many trips

with our patients. Congratulations Milt on a job well done.

Imperial Finances: Much has been made of the reduction of employees at the hospital system because of budget short falls. Here is the explanation. At the beginning of the recession the Endowment Fund had roughly $8 billion in assets which became roughly $4 billion. The hospital system used only the interest of the Endowment to finance their opera-tions. When we took the hit, the interest didn’t pay for the system to operate, so we began to take monies from the En-

dowment. That further reduced our income and fund balances.

The amount taken from the endowment the first year was $750 million.

So we had to make some drastic changes in hospital operations to compensate for the decrease in monies available.

We began to look at how we could again get the balance between income and expense. The result was less patients for

long term care, and more out patient surgeries.

So today, we are operating more efficiently with less people on staff. Both the Chicago and St. Louis Hospitals reduced full time employees by over 100. The new model of operations will be 5/24 instead of 7/24. Some exceptions are being discussed in Tampa to allow 7/24 at certain locations that can prove to be profitable and income generators on the week-

end.

Losses to the Endowment are now down because of the actions taken. However, we are still are operating at these losing figures: ’13, $130 million,’14, 100 million. With the growth in the Endowment the last several years, we may see a bal-

anced budget in the near future.

Dr. Gordon at the St. Louis Hospital is the first in the system to use a new method of limb lengthening. You are probably familiar with the external fixates that are outside the body and limb lengthening is done by twisting screws to achieve the desired results. This new method is placed inside the limb and extension is done by magnetic reaction to several pieces

of the device.

proach is being pursued; "Support Hospital Day" campaign is an effort that would ask the individ-

ual members of the local area Temples to help defray the costs of this event. The campaign would

be similar to those you may have seen from March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy or similar organi-

zations, which solicit small donations and then display a Shoe, a Shamrock, etc. at local business

establishments such as grocery stores, department stores and the like. In our case, we would pro-

vide "I Supported Hospital Day” heart shaped stickers for individuals to wear as well as a card

which would contain their name (club or unit) and Temple. Two copies of the card would be pro-

vided - one for display at the local temple (optional at your discretion) and one for display at the

hospital on Hospital Day. Donations would be solicited in $5-$50 or more range. See draft sample

attached. Committee members would work with you and your local units, clubs, newsletters, etc.

to solicit support. Please note that this is not an "admission ticket" - all Shriners

are welcome to attend Hospital Day - we are simply asking for support of the event. Donations

would be tax deductible to the extent any other monetary contributions to the hospital are.

Yours in faith,

William R. Kuehn,

Chairman, Board of Governors

Update on providing Wounded Warrior Care

Shriners Hospital for Children Pediatric Specialty Hospitals Douglas E. Maxwell President and CEO My dear Fellow Representative and Nobles, Our Wounded Warriors Path……. I want to give you a “Status report "of our actions to have America’s “Wounded Warriors” learn about Shriners Hospitals wonderful care that’s now available to them. A little over 6 months ago, on July 1st 2013, we received our approval from the Defense Department by the Under Secretary of Military Medical Affairs Dr. Jonathan Woodson. Since then a variety of very necessary steps have been taken place. From the beginning of the setup process in the spring of 2013 with “our friends” at the Pentagon, we have had a very important “secondary goal”. This was to establish such good procedures and practices with the DOD, that the Veterans Administration, where the large majority of America’s Wounded Warriors are, would be inclined to lessen their resistance to tak-ing “Help from Outside” private organizations. This was a “Key Step” in the path….and we are finding very neces-sary. To accomplish these good “Procedures and Practices” between SHC and the Pentagon, our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kenneth Guidera, has been working these last 6 month with his Medical counterparts at the Walter Reed/Bethesda facility in Washington. Dr. Guidera’s first goal was to establish that rapport between our doctors and the Military’s doctors thur the medical lectures and joining them in the “operating room”. Dr. Guidera is also working on the logistics to enable “Our Shrine Doctors” to actually be able to attend to these Veterans in our SHC locations. He is establishing the path for our Shrine doctors to basically go across the street with the Veteran to affiliated “Adult Hospital” where the doctors also has “privileges”. Our Shrine Care will be provided by our doctors there. When working with the United States Government, nothing happens quickly. To do these interactions, we have needed (MOD’s) “Memorandums of Understandings“ with Bethesda. These must be negotiated and agreed upon. This was just concluded in January after much back and forth. We have now began this interchange of our Doctors visiting Walter Reed and the military physicians visiting our Hospitals. Our own Dr. Scott Kozin and Dr. Amer Samdani of Philadelphia and Dr. Matthias Donelan of Boston have already had their initial conversations to begin accomplishing this. It’s these caliber of Physicians representing Shriners Hospitals that will bridge this gap of “Who we are and SHC’s capabilities. The slowness of these processes does frustrate our desire to have these Wounded Soldiers come to us “NOW” for our Shrine Care. But all of these steps are necessary. Did I mention….” nothing happens quickly when working with the Government”. During Dr. Woodson’s video to us at last summers Chairman’s Hospital Report, Dr. Woodson told us that one of the major needs of America’s “ Active Duty “Wounded”, those who still wear the uniform and receive their orders from the Department of Defense, are with their “Burns Reconstruction”. As you will recall, Dr. Woodson did his “Residency” at our Boston Burns Hospital. Those years made him very knowledgeable of Shriners Hospitals leading the way in “Burns Care” for the last 47 years. Fortunately for America’s active duty “Burned” wounded soldier, our military does a nice job of “trying to keep” these “Soldiers” stationed near the military’s excellent burns facility in San Antonia, Texas. This makes their multi-ple treatments much less of an event for them and their family. This military hospital, the Brook Army Medical Center”. is “World Class”. To a similar extent, the military is trying to station most of their “Active Duty” soldiers with “Missing limbs and prosthesis”, in Washington DC near the military’s excellent Walter Reed hospital. This allows these soldiers to similarly received “Prosthesis adjustment” more easily. So how does Shriners desire to help…fit into these actions? As much as we would desire for all doctors and hospital in the U.S. to know of the excellence performed at Shriners Hospitals that unfortunately is not quite the case. For that matter, not every person who has served in our military knows of our excellent care available to them either. As previously noted…America’s “Active Duty” wounded soldiers are currently receiving very good care where they reside in Washington and San Antonio, at Walter Reed and Brook. For these “Wounded” to come to Shriners Hospitals, they must be convinced, in their minds, that they can receive the same or better care. And always remember. “For each Soldier” the decision to try Shriners Hospitals for their care must always be of their own “free will” and desire. None of this means we’re not needed… The majority of America’s Wounded are in the Veterans ranks. Around America there are numerous VA Hospitals to fill this role. But as any Veteran knows, not all loca-tions are staffed with Doctors of all disciplines, such as Orthotics and prostheses adjustments and Burns Recon-struction. If we can get the word to these veterans that the great Shriner Hospitals for Children….That philanthropy that has been providing excellent care for children for 92 years in Burns and Orthopedics…is now ”Defense De-partment approved” to help the military’s wounded…Perhaps they will give Shriners a try. Our new Goal…To get our message of Shriners ”offer to Help” to these Wounded Veterans.

Beauty Is as Beauty Is: Meet Miss Iowa—-One of Our Own

Nicole Kelly, Keokuk, IA, came home again to SHC-Chicago this week, not as a patient but as

reigning Miss Iowa for 2013. And she is beautiful! Born without her left forearm, Nicole has been a

patient at both our St. Louis and Chicago Shriners Hospitals. She is a theater arts major from the

University of Nebraska—Lincoln, and had internships in the theater in New York and Chicago. In

coming home to our hospital, she had a wonderful reunion with Dr. Jeffrey Ackman, Chief of Staff,

and Cathy Schroeder, her nurse while here. Nicole was crowned Miss Iowa in June 2013, and will

wear her crown through June 2014. We welcome Nicole and thank her for brightening our day—

our lives —so beautifully on this world stage!

Accomplishing those “First Steps” last summer, of setting up an acceptance by the Department of Defense that Shriners Hospitals Care is up to the standards that our “Heroes” deserve…was critical in this path. For the last few months, I have begun working with National Veteran’s Organizations. Our prior accomplish-ment of receiving DOD approval was a major step towards these organizations acceptance and willingness to talk and help us interact with the “wounded we can help”. I am currently working with two groups that have successfully “bridged the gap” of working with the Vet-eran’s Administration in getting “Private Care” for these soldiers. These include “Triwest” in the West and the Ma-rine’s Semper Fi Odyssey group in the East. And in the future, I will be meeting with the CEO of “Wounded Warri-ors”. This is the group whose commercials we have all seen and who have been so successful. My goal is to have these groups help SHC spread our word to the Veterans about our offer of help. For all of you who have said “What can do to help”… In the near future, you will see in this message exactly what you and other Nobles can do. In an early meeting with the Marine’s Semper Fi group director, Major General Tom Jones has already suggested such a path. This past week I attended one of these Marine seminars in the mountains of Pennsylvania. There were 36 Wounded Marines who are about to be released from Active Duty. I felt privileged and honored to be sitting among them and spending some time learning of their future concerns. These 36 men were wounded in either the Iraq or the Afghanistan Theater and are in need of “Help” in many ways. From what I observed, there appears to be a very real and very necessary non – medical role for Shriners to do in addition to medical care. In 2014, Shriners Hospitals have the Doctors and the Capacity to help. What makes that now possible? During the last 15 years, between the continuing changes in “Medical Procedures that create shorter stays” and now under the umbrella of the “Affordable Care Act” having all of America’s children being covered by insurance…America’s other “Children’s Hospitals” are doing everything they can to encourage “every child” to come to “their Hospital” for care. It is literally their “financial survival”. Unfortunately for the Shriners Hospitals, we also operate in this same environment. Because of this new “Insurance Environment”, hospitals that used to recommend to Shriners those chari-table cases….are now treating these children themselves. Our hospitals no longer have the “number of children” we would desire. We have the “capacity” to help… Shriners Hospitals were originally founded for the “Betterment of Humanity” Our fraternity is very “Charitable of Heart”. There are new needs “if Shriners” want to step forward again as our predecessors did in the 1920’s for polio and again in the 1960’s for burns. An immediate need can be help these “Veterans” with care and with compassion. Assisting our Veterans received a resounding “Yes” at the last two Imperial Sessions…..

Kaaba Noble ’Hunts” for Pheasants—and Patients for our Hospital

Kaaba Noble Frank Hocker has a passion to help children in need. His Annual ASA Charity Ladies Fast

Pitch Softball Tournament —-coming into its 10th year—in Moline, IL has raised more than $75,000 for

our hospitals. In 2013 Imperial Potentate Alan W. Madsen presented brother Frank with the Imperial

Potentate’s Medallion for the service to children. In December Frank and his Lady Betty were in Aber-

deen, SD, hunting pheasants —-”when it was 38 –below," he says. Staying at the White House Inn in

Aberdeen, the Hocker got acquainted with the staff and gave them one of Frank’s Shrine cards, telling

them his work was finding children with medical needs who could be helped by our hospitals. In Febru-

ary, Brother Frank received a call from a mom in Gore, OK, asking if he was the Shriner who helps chil-

dren. “I am” he replied. She said, “ my son has epilepsy, and I’m wondering if you could get help for him

at a Shriners hospital?” The child is now a patient at SHC—St. Louis. The mom had stayed at the White

House Inn in January and heard of Frank from a cleaning lady. And so it goes in Brother Frank ‘s life—

he’s one of our great ambassadors and a cherished friend of our hospitals.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE RAECHEL AXMEAR ESTATE

Nobles let me give you a brief history about Raechel “Higgins” Axmear.

She was a lady who lived to be 95 years old, very active for her age. Her mother died when Raechel was

three years old. She graduated from Keswick High School and AIB in Des Moines. She married Edgar Axmear at

her parents home near Keswick. They made their home in Keswick where Raechel worked for a telephone com-

pany. Her husband, Edgar, managed the Lumber yard before going into the banking business. Raechel & Edgar

also operated E & R insurance for many years.

Raechel’s father, Leo Higgins, was a member of Kaaba Temple. Her husband never became a Mason, for

what reason I do not know, but over the years Raechel has remembered the “Temple” many times with her dona-

tions.

The town of Keswick had two big celebrations. Raechel & her husband Edgar always provided hospitality for the

Nobles who brought their Parade Units. She always enjoyed that time with the nobles and their ladies, who took

the time to come.

Upon the death of Raechel, Kaaba Temple has received a very sizeable donation from her estate. Raechel

never had any children of her own but she always appreciated the support “ Shriners” gave to the 22 hospitals.

“Nobles” Thanks for keeping those parade units in the public eye.
