We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe: You sanctify us by Your commandments and enjoin us to kindle the Sabbath lights.

Jessica Cole: January 2016

In January, several children from years 9 and 10 from NPLS met at Watford

Junction station to travel by train to Birmingham, myself included! Here we met

up with teenagers from 3 or 4 other progressive and liberal synagogues.

That evening, we all went to Friday night service together and then watched a

film before going to sleep. Early the next day, we attended Saturday morning

service which Rabbi Lea and Student Rabbi Elliot helped to lead. We then walked

around Birmingham looking at old Jewish sites including where a synagogue had

previously been.

I’m really glad that I went and got to experience meeting other Jewish teenagers

from around the country.

For all we see around us: towns and villages, factories and farms, flowers and trees, sea and sky– God, we thank You for the world and all its beauty.

For the love You show us each day, by giving us laws and commandments which teach us how to live– God, we thank You for parents and teachers who help us understand Your laws.

For making us one family on earth, the children of One God– God, we thank You, who have made everyone different and yet alike.

For family and friends, brothers and sisters, cousins and neighbours– God, we thank You for friendship, warmth and love.

For hearts overflowing with kindness, for cheerful smiles and helpful hands– God, we thank You for all those who think of others, helping them and making them glad.

Come, my friend, to meet the bride, in joy to greet Shabbat.

‘Observe!’, ‘Remember!’ - one command, God taught us both in a single phrase. Our God is One and One is God’s name, in fame, in glory and in praise.

Let us go to greet Shabbat, for from her pour endless blessings: Conceived before Creation’s dawn, the final act thought long before.

Arouse yourself, arouse yourself! Your light has come; Rise and shine anew! Awake, awake and break out in song! God’s glory is revealed to you.

O come in peace, Creation’s crown! Let joy and gladness now abide. Refresh God’s people and its faith! Come in, O bride! Come in O bride!

Praise the One to whom our praise is due.

Praised be the One to whom our praise is due, now and forever.

Daniel Maltz - New Torah Scroll

In May 2015 we opened the doors to our Ark to the first Torah scroll

commissioned especially for our Synagogue. The new lightweight Torah was

finished with the help of 41 of our members who with our wonderful scribe,

wrote the final letters onto the Scroll.

The community then danced and marched out into the streets of Northwood,

heading to Green Lane car park where a tree had grown from a seed from a tree

planted at Theresienstadt (Terezin) Concentration Camp in 1943 by a

courageous teacher and her pupils.

The scroll joined 4 Czechoslovak scrolls in the NPLS ark from Kolin, Trebon,

Plzen and Spiska-nova-Ves.

The scroll was made with the help of the NPLS community. It is something that

brought the community together and will hopefully help the next generation in

their Jewish studies.

God has given us a very special gift. Torah brings us life and happiness. The ways of the Torah are pleasing; they lead to peace. It is a tree of life to those

that hold fast to it and all of its supporters are happy.

You shall love the Eternal One, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall always be in your heart. Teach them diligently to your children; speak of them in your home and on your way, when you lie down and when you rise up. Bind them as a sign upon your hand; let them be like frontlets between your eyes;

inscribe them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.

Adam Jeeves - Refugees

Home by Warsan Shire

no one leaves home unless

home is the mouth of a shark

you only run for the border

when you see the whole city running as well

you have to understand,

that no one puts their children in a boat

unless the water is safer than the land

no one burns their palms

under trains

beneath carriages

no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck

feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled

means something more than journey.

no one crawls under fences

no one wants to be beaten

pitied

no one leaves home until home is a sweaty voice in your ear

saying-

leave,

run away from me now

i don’t know what i’ve become

but i know that anywhere

is safer than here

Abbie Harper – Pesach

April was a very interesting month and not just because it was my 14th Birthday

on the 28th!

First of all it was Pesach, which began on the evening of Friday 3 April and

concluded on the evening of Saturday 11 April. I spent the first night at a huge

Seder table with my extended family and my Grandma made Seder really fun for

all of us as usual – my favourite part of the night is always when we talk about

the 10 plagues and when we shout ‘HAIL’, all the children throw mini white

marshmallows round the room!

I’ve been wading in the velvet sea...

Mi chamocha ba-eilim Adonai, mi kamocha ne’dar ba-kodesh, nora tehillot, oseh fele.

Who is like You, Eternal One, among the gods people worship? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, awesome in splendour, doing wonders.

The Eternal One shall reign for ever.

Abbie Harper –Israel

In Israel, April was marked by some fantastic events, including:

The Ahava Dead Sea Rock Festival a rock music festival and the 18th

annual Stone in the Galilee sculpting symposium where Israel’s most

prominent sculptors created art for public spaces.

On April 22-23, Israelis celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence

Day). In Tel Aviv, there was a giant fireworks display over Rabin Square

and the Israel Air Force flyover above the shore.

Alexander Marmor – KT Trip to Czech Republic and Israel

October was a great month. We all came together as a class and as friends and

visited Prague. It was a very emotional trip but was also great fun as well as

being very interesting. When we visited the camp in Terezin, we were speechless

due to the living conditions and the other atrocities that took place. We were so

surprised that Jews would sneak off and risk their lives to go to a tiny room and

pray there. This trip brought us a lot closer together as a group and it will not be

forgotten.

As well as our trip to Prague taking place in October, an outbreak of violence

occurred between Israel and Palestine where 32 Palestinians and 7 Israelis were

killed in the first two weeks of the month. It was the biggest outburst of violence

the area had had in recent years. The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry

called for Israeli and Palestinian leaders to meet and agree on a plan to stop the

violence.

Ben Matthews – Cheder Fun Day

July marked the end of our fantastic Kabbalat Torah year, or, the long awaited

start to the summer holidays (depending on how you look at it)!!! We finished off

the year with some relaxed classes, and memorably on the last day, took turns

throwing wet sponges at Rabbi Aaron’s head. Saying our goodbyes for the

summer break, we could look back at the fun of last year whilst eagerly awaiting

meeting again in September and looking even further into the future building

excitement for our trip to Prague.

Joshua Jackson – Pursuing Peace

December 2015 was a big month for the world and me. We witnessed the UK’s

intervention with Syrian air strikes against Islamic State. "Love thy neighbour as

thyself” it says in the Torah. When Moses saw a Jew striking another in Egypt

(Exodus 2:13): "...he said to the rasha ("evil one"), why do you hit your fellow!?"

The midrash comments, "Rabbi Yitzhak said: from this you learn that whoever

hits his fellow, is called a rasha.” The love of peace and the pursuit of peace is one

of the key principles in Jewish law.

In this month, I also went to Los Angeles! There was a large Jewish community

there and some of the Israeli bars had great falafel!

Shalom rav al Yisrael am'kha tasim l'olam. Ki Atah Hu Melekh Adon l'khol hashalom V'tov b'einecha l'vareich et-am'cha Yis'rael (v'et-kol-ha'amim) B'chol eit uv'chol sha'ah bish'lomecha.

Jamie Kiltie – Kabbalat Torah

KT is a big event in our lives but it’s not the fact of getting up and doing it, it’s the

fact of actually getting yourself ready and prepared. Our class is made up of

mathematicians, artists, geologists and so many more people. It’s events like

Kabbalat Torah that make us who we are. Events happen every day that alter us

and change the way we see things in life. KT is a big part of that. March is the time

for getting ready, the nerves to peak and then plummet. It’s the time to discover

who we are. So in a way we are doing this service on individuality, but we are

also doing it on events because, without simple little events that happen in our

lives, we would not be the same people that stand in front of you today, if

everything that has happened in the past didn’t happen at all. March is an event,

KT is an event. All this will alter us in what is to come.

Oseh shalom bimromav, hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu v’al kol yisrael, v’al kol b’nei adam v’imru: Amen.

Maker of peace from above, make peace for us, for all Israel, and for everyone.

Elana Keiles – World Jewish Relief

In June 2015, a representative from World Jewish Relief came to visit us. The

woman that came opened our eyes to different ways Jews are treated and how

much they need people’s help. We learnt about how volunteers work to help

children, the elderly, people with disabilities, women and victims of international

disaster. They work to relieve poverty, help as disaster response and improve

people’s situations by building sustainable livelihoods and help communities to

develop in countries all around the world. We heard some incredible stories of

projects that are being run. For example, the volunteers have been running a

rehabilitation program to help re-house young homeless children in Moldova and

also rehouse and rehabilitate over 1600 people in Mumbai, India. After the talk

we sat down and had a debate about World Jewish Relief helping everyone or

just Jews. As a group we decided that everyone deserves any help that they need,

whether they are Jewish or not, as people are all equal and any possible help

people can get to improve their situation or lifestyle is important.

Love and kindness have been a part of Judaism from the very beginning. Jewish

law includes within it a blueprint for a just and ethical society, where no one

takes from another or harms another or takes advantage of another, but

everyone gives to one another and helps one another and protects one another.

Kaddish יתום קדיש

As our service ends, we think about people whose life has ended. Some of them we knew, and they were very special to us; we loved them, and we miss

them very much. Others we did not know, but we honour them as well.

With our Kaddish prayer, We thank You, God, for life and love.

We remember wonderful people, and we praise You for their lives.

We, too, shall try to live as You and they would want us to live.

Daniel Schwartz-Briskin – Song

It's been a minute since you left and

I'm tryna get back to my best and

I'm living breathing all the stress and

My heart is beating out my chest and

Because it's been a minute till I saw you

And I am trying to get to

A life which I once knew

But in the end

It's done

And I can't hold you anymore

In my arms

But I'll find the truth soon enough

‘Cause I know I'll be with you through struggle it's rough

‘Cause I've been looking at the stars almost every night

And I've been thinking bout your face in the pale moon light I'm thinking wo

And I been thinking bout you and all the things that you did

I got a one way ticket right out of here cause I'm like wo

Now it's been some time I saw you

But just know that I will adore you

The rough times that I got through

The heights that I'll get to

And I'm back on my feet now

But I'm feeling it somehow

Magnified and sanctified be the great name of the One by whose will the world was created. May God’s rule become effective in your lives and in the life of

the whole House of Israel. May it be so soon, and let us say: Amen.

May God’s great name be praised to all eternity.

Blessed and praised; glorified, exalted and extolled; lauded, honoured and acclaimed be the name of the Holy One, who is ever to be praised, though far above the eulogies and songs of praise and consolation that human lips can

utter; and let us say: Amen.

May great peace descend from heaven, and abundant life be granted, to us and to all Israel; and let us say: Amen.

May the Most High, Source of perfect peace, grant peace to us, to all Israel, and to all humanity, and let us say: Amen.

Carmella Susser – Reunited

September, what an exciting month that was. After a long summer apart we all

came back ready for the last year of Cheder. Of course it is a very important

month in the Jewish calendar as it marks the start of the Jewish New Year. Seeing

last year’s KT class performing the mitzvot at the High Holidays, reminded us

that this year it is our turn to take on these responsibilities.

Already we knew that there was a lot ahead of us, including Prague and other

exciting events. Noticing everyone start to mature and come together not only as

a group but as good friends was amazing. We also all grew as individuals and

realized that each of us is unique.

For me as for many people September was a fresh start and gave me a chance to

reflect on the past year and come up with new goals and aspirations, such as

working on my confidence. KT has played a massive part towards this and

continues to do so.

After an eventful journey through our KT experience, I’m already looking

forward to teaching next year at cheder and keeping in touch with all my friends

in the future.

.גם־יחד

How good it is, and how pleasant, when brothers and sisters live together in unity.

With grate thanks to Rabbi Aaron and Leah for all their hard work and helping

us make this service because with them and all the other people who helped

us this service would be here today.
