Thank you for participating in the 2014 Ragnar Relay - Afghanistan. Military deployments often challenge those who serve, but through those challenges friendships are formed and strengthened. Events that inspire camaraderie (as deployments often do) are few and far between. Team endurance races offer a similar experience.

This Shadow Ragnar is about testing ourselves and building camaraderie over 189 miles and 30 hours of relay running.

Team Participation: In a typical Ragnar, a 12 person team is split into two vans; Runners 1-6 in Van 1 and Runners 7-12 in Van 2. This Ragnar does not have vans, but we will refer to each team of 6 as Van 1 or 2. Each van supports their team of runners until their set of legs is complete.

For example: Van 1 will begin the race with Runner 1 starting his run at the appointed hour. Van 2 can sleep in if they like. Each runner from Van 1 will run their leg and pass the baton (i.e., slap bracelet) to the next runner. Once Runner 6 has finished their leg, Van 2 should be waiting at the exchange. Runner 6 will pass the bracelet to Runner 7 and Van 2 takes over. Van 1 is free to take a break, take a nap or continue to cheer the other van on. This continues until Runner 12 finishes his third leg on the following afternoon.

Route Navigation: Runners will run the loop clockwise, on the left side of the road (facing traffic). Use the maps on the following pages as a guide.

Runner Rotation: Runners must run in the same sequence for each segment of the race. For example, if a runner runs leg 3, he must also run leg 15 and leg 27.

Injured Runners During Race: In the event of an injury, any of the remaining runners can replace the injured runner. With the exception of the leg in which the runner was injured, legs cannot be split in pieces. For example, if runner 3 is injured half way through his or her first leg, any member of the team may complete the leg for him or her. Any member of the team can also fill in legs 15 and 27. Those legs can be filled with different runners, or one can fill in the remaining legs. A 13th member is not allowed to join the team in order to run the remaining legs. Once a runner drops out of the race, he or she cannot enter back into the race.

Page 4: KABUL, AFGHANISTAN 7-8 NOVEMBER, 2014

Safety Officer: Each Van is required to have one person awake and alert while their van has runners on the course. The safety officer is responsible to ensure safe behavior by the members of the team.

Night Running: Runners will wear a reflective belt, if their leg will occur during hours of darkness (e.g., any legs between 1655 and 0620 hours).

Personal Music Devices and Headphones: The use of personal music devices with headphones while running is strongly discouraged. Wearing personal music devices causes distractions and the inability to hear what is going on around the runner. If you still choose to use them, you do so at your own risk and must be able to hear traffic and any big voice announcements.

Hydration: Pre-hyrdrate and then stay hydrated during and after each leg. Although the temperatures have dropped, dehydration can occur quickly in this environment. Use your Van mates to assist as necessary during each leg.

Bad Weather: The race will occur rain or shine. If dangerous weather occurs, delays or pauses may be applied as necessary.

Incoming, Incoming, Incoming: Should there be an IDF attack while running, immediately lay down on the ground (off the road) and wait two minutes (with your hands over your head). After two minutes, seek shelter. When the all clear is given, provide accountability to your chain of command and to your Van Captain. The race will resume after accountability for the team is complete.

Road Kill: While you may encounter other runners during the event, they are not part of the Ragnar Relay; kill them any way. Tally a kill anytime you pass another person is running. If someone passes you, subtract a kill.
