Straight to the point!-Why are we here?

• This class teaches you how to perform quality research.

• Your instructors in your other classes tell you to do research.

• But, they don’t tell you how to do quality research. • This class teaches you how to do quality research.

•You are here to learn how to do quality research!

Page 14: Kahn1

Are you a critical researcher?1. Think about a time when you needed to make an

important purchase. 2. 1-What did you do to make sure you were making the

best decision on which product to buy? 3. 2-Did you think about what kind of product you really

needed? 4. 3-Did you search for information on the Internet or by

asking friends or neighbors? 5. 4-Did you consider whether the information you

received was reliable and helpful before you let it influence you?

6. 5-Did you ultimately make a good decision based on the information you found out?

7. If you answered “yes” to most of those questions, you are what is called a “critical consumer.”

Page 15: Kahn1

•So you already have been doing critical research your

entire life.

•This class will just teaching you new tools to do it better!

Page 16: Kahn1

What exactly is Information Literacy?

Page 17: Kahn1

The American Libraries Association Defines Information Literacy as:•“Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.“

• In addition, information literacy includes the ability to use information legally and ethically.

Page 18: Kahn1

In very simple languageInformation literately includes• creating a research question• finding information• evaluating that information• and using that information in a way that avoids plagiarism by citing your sources and observing copyright law.

• (Based on The Association for College and Research Libraries Five Standards for Information Literacy)

• You do research by performing the above 5 steps• That is what our class is all about

Page 19: Kahn1

Why do We Need to Be

Information Literate When We Have

Google?

Page 20: Kahn1

THE DIGITAL AGE IS DEMANDING!

• Would you want to take a drink from a fire hydrant?• How is the internet like a fire hydrant?

Page 21: Kahn1

Challenges presented by the internet.• “On the WWW, anyone can publish almost anything he or she wants to say,” without obstacle (Badke 8-9).

• Because of this:

• The internet has so much information. We can easily become overwhelmed.

• It becomes our job to become better searchers of information.

• Anyone can publish anything online even if it is not trustworthy. Whose job is it to evaluate that information?

• It is our job. We have to enhance our evaluation skills.

Page 22: Kahn1

So How Would You Answer the Question

•Why do We Need to Be Information Literate When

We Have Google?

• The amount of information in Google can be overwhelming

• The quality of information in Google can be untrustworthy

Page 23: Kahn1

Or in the words of President Obama

Page 24: Kahn1

Sounds easy…but it is a complex process…

- To determine exactly what it is you want to know ( I need information on ????)- How do you find appropriate sources of information (Wikipedia? Google????)- How can you know whether the sources are correct or reliable? (Who wrote this?)- How do you properly integrate other’s ideas into your own ideas, writings, college papers, communications with others? (DON’T Plagiarize!)Remember:

• Knowledge is power. • Information is liberating.

• Kofi Annan

• But what if your information is incorrect, incomplete, or

mis-represented?• …This course will enable you to become information literate for

college work and lifelong learning...

Page 25: Kahn1

Let’s review what this class is all about by watching the Information Literacy SongAsk yourself which parts of information literacy does the song describe and which does it leave out?

Page 26: Kahn1

MOST IMPORTANTLY• Information Literacy is a right and a privilege• Information was not always so accessible • Our Ancestors fought for the right to know• Technology from the printing press to the Internet has made it possible like never before

• • Let’s take a brief look at the history and evolution of our information society:

• See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNYoVOsLayo
