It’s O-Bon Time!

We are now entering the season of O-Bon, a time of festivity and of remembering departed loved ones. O-Bon has its origins in a story found in the Ulambana Sutra. In this sutra we are told a legendary story of one of the Buddha’s disciples, who was known as “Maha Mogallana.” According to the sutra, this disciple was famous among the Buddha’s followers for his supernatural powers and ability to see beyond this world into the next. One day, while looking into the next world, he saw his own mother suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts. He was naturally very upset about this and asked Shakyamuni Buddha

for guidance.

The Buddha told Mogallana that his mother’s current condition was due to her actions or “karma” cre-ated during her life. He explained that the only way to help someone in such a condition is to make offer-ings to all the monks at the end of the “Rainy Season Retreat,” the season when, due to the monsoon rains, monks could not wander in the forests but gathered together at temples for Dharma study and Buddhist practice. Mogallana made these offerings, and by means of the combined efforts of all the enlightened monks, his mother was released from her suffering. From this time on, the story tells us, it became a tradi-tion to make offerings to the monks at this time of year, in order to help loved ones who might be suffering

in the next world.

However, the great Buddhist teacher Shinran Shonin completely rejected the belief that offerings or rituals will affect our loved ones in the next world. He taught that Amida’s Great Compassionate Vow has already embraced and saved all beings. Amida Buddha is Limitless Life, Compassion and Wisdom, always nurturing and helping everyone. We are eternally surrounded by Great Compassion and are always accepted completely, just as we are! Our concern, as Shinran Shonin taught, should be to abandon our arrogant self-centered power and “quickly attain enlightenment in the Pure Land,” which means that we awaken to the reality of Great Compassion, that we become able to live our life with confidence and gratitude. Living without anxiety and fear about this or the next world, we can truly seek to understand and appreciate each moment of life and the world that sustains us. Through the nembutsu path, we gain the confidence to learn, grow, and truly care about others. We realize—each of us in own unique way—the nurturing Oneness of

Life and naturally live in gratitude and inner peace. This is “Namo Amida Butsu.”

This is the spirit in which we ought to celebrate O-Bon, particularly the O-Bon Memorial services that families often observe in memory of their departed loved ones. In this way—through reflecting upon the Buddha’s teaching—we are able to express our appreciation for our family members who passed this pre-cious life on to us and sustained us through their love and kindness. As we express gratitude to those close to us, we are able to awaken ever more deeply to the Great Compassion that constantly supports us and

never abandons us.

I am grateful to have learned many valuable lessons while assigned here. Thank you for embracing my wife Megumi and my children. We now have many extended families in Kahu-lui too. It is difficult for me to leave Kahului Hongwanji after develop-ing personal relationships with so many of you. I have not experi-enced such relationship with other temples in other districts in a short period of time. I would like to continue my relationship with you and would like to visit you when I am in Kahului. I am so grateful to have been a part of Kahului Hongwanji’s history and I consider Kahului Hongwanji my temple and my home. Please support Kyodan President Janet in taking leadership and working in harmony for the future of your temple. Please support

your temple in all the activities in whatever way you can. Help sustain your temple for the next genera-tions and make your temple a viable part of your community. It takes many hands and minds to operate a successful organization. Many hands and minds make difficult things easy. Honor your family by sponsoring a chochin. Twenty dollars will enable you to write names and/or messages on a colorful tag that will flutter in the wind. BROILED MISO-MARINATED FISH

4 pieces fish (black cod or salmon to serve 4) 1 cup miso ¼ cup sake ¼ cup mirin ½ cup sugar

Mix miso, sake, mirin and sugar for sauce. Marinate and refrigerate fish in sauce for 2-3 days. Bake at 450 degrees for 5-8 minutes. Broil for 2-3 minutes to caramelize the top.

July holds an ending and a beginning for Kahului Hongwanji. By our calendar six months—January to June—half of 2013 have gone by. Beginning with the month of July, the second half of the year awaits us. And what an active second half it will be! Kahului Hongwanji welcomes our new Resident Minister, Reverend Richard Tennes, and his wife, Parinya. Arriving during the first week of the month, Rev. and Mrs. Tennes had only a few days to get their bearings before Rev. Tennes conducted his first Sunday service on July 7. Awaiting Rev. and Mrs. Tennes was a residence that glowed with a facelift that featured new flooring, fixtures, window treatments, and a re-modeled bathroom. All this was frosted with a coat of paint that featured earth tones. Millions of “thank you’s” go to the many independent contractors who went over and beyond by donating much time and mate-rials as they worked on the house. So many temple members—men and women—also worked on readying the house. Skilled tradesmen and members alike put their hearts into the work that their hands created. THANK YOU! July will also find everyone working together on the KHM Obon. This very important event has long been an important summer cultural landmark. Buddhist sects on Maui have joined together in a summer-long schedule of bon dances that stretches from June to August. For Kahului Hongwanji, the message is Respect and Gratitude. Respect—for our family members who have gone before us, for the family who are still with us, and for those who will be the future. Gratitude for all those who have gone before us and shown us the way so that we may have greater understanding and compassion. I would like to draw attention back to the first half of the year, or more accurately, to the thirteen months leading up to July. Reverend Ai Hironaka has been an outstanding Minister-in-Charge for Kahului Hong-wanji. He has had to juggle his schedules between two temples while solving the obstacle of needing to travel from Lahaina to Kahului to be there for members of Kahului Hongwanji. We don’t have the space to list all the duties Rev. Ai has fulfilled, nor can we adequately express our gratitude for “Above and Beyond” services and counsel that he has given to us. THANK YOU, REV. AI HIRONAKA! Kahului Hongwanji also sends our gratitude to Mrs. Megumi Hironaka and the four children for sharing Rev. Ai with us. We know that it was not always easy and you are all appreciated! The rest of the year? After Obon comes the New and Expanded Yard Sale—the traditional Maui Fair—end-of-year celebrations—and, who knows what else lies in store for us—but all will be met with teamwork and mutual support. Let’s be good to all and to ourselves—If we take care of ourselves, we take care of others.

The 2013 Obon Services on both nights will begin at 6:30 p.m. These temple services will be preceded by Nokotsudo Services at 6 p.m. The Hatsubon List is printed below. Please call the temple office at 871-4732 if you have any questions. Kahului Hongwanji has invited groups to share their culture and tal-ent from 7:30 p.m. on both evenings. Friday will feature the students of the Kahului Hongwanji Preschool dancing the “Tankobushi.” Saturday night will feature the dancers of Maui Minyo Kai. The traditional obon dances will follow from 7:45 p.m. until 10 p.m. In addition to the danc-ing, there will be lots of food and drinks, games and prizes and time for fellowship to be enjoyed by all! The 2015 World Buddhist Women’s Convention will be held at the Calgary Telus Convention Center in Calgary, Canada, on May 30-31, 2015. The theme is “Embraced by the Oneness of Life.” Where is Calgary? Calgary is in western Canada in the province of Alberta, east of the province British Columbia. Calgary is a major business and global energy center. It is known for the world’s biggest rodeo called the Calgary Stampede held annually in July. Yes, a passport is required so please be sure to acquire one or check the expiration date of your current passport. The currency is the Canadian dollar, but many venues accept the American dollar. The “loonie” is the Canadian one-dollar coin with a loon depicted on it. (A loon is an aquatic bird about the size of a large duck.) A “toonie” is the bi-metallic two-dollar coin. FYI: The world convention following the one in Calgary, Canada, will be held in San Francisco in 2019. There is a request by the Hawaii Federation BWA for a tentative count by September 15, 2013 for both conventions. Please contact Charlotte Wilkinson at 276-5378 (leave a message) if you are interested in the Calgary and/or San Francisco conventions. O-Bon season has arrived. The Kahului BWA will be sponsoring a bus to the Lahaina Hongwanji Bon Dance on Friday, August 23. Space is limited so please call the temple office at 871-4732 by August 11, 2013 to reserve a seat. Congratulations, Graduates!

Dharma School

Commencement signals a challenging journey for young graduates. On June 9 three high school graduates of KHM member families and affiliate organizations were introduced. Reece Yokote and Lindsey Miyamoto will be attending the Uni-versity of Hawaii at Manoa. Mareena Hutchison and her family will be moving to Colorado this summer. After service the graduates were honored at a luncheon at the Kahili Restau-rant. A group of 21, family and temple members and the graduates, enjoyed deli-cious food and genial fellowship. Allicia Ostoposides Imada, who previously graduated from Seabury Hall, just graduated from Wellesley College in Boston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in neuroscience. She is currently a research assistant at Boston University. Her goal is to become a doctor and she will be spending the next year applying to medical schools. KHM congratulates the graduates and wishes them much success.

The KHM Dharma School teachers all hope the students are enjoying their summer vaca-tion. Registration and first day of dharma school will be on August 11, 2013, at KHM. The teach-ers hope to see many familiar and new faces! The annual VIDSTA kick-off picnic takes on a new and exciting twist this year! Dharma School students are welcome to join in the fun at Camp Olowalu on September 14-15. Students can participate in the daytime only sessions or stay overnight. So mark your calendars and get ready for a fun-filled and busy year.

Hi, my name is Dayna, and I would like to tell you what I did this past year in 4H. My 4H friends and I had a lot of fun and new experiences this year. We got to show our sense of style at the Keiki Fest Fashion Revue in April. I was kind of nervous, but it was fun and I got to show off my favorite Cinnamon Girl dress. My sister and I recorded a public service announcement on the radio to promote the annual Keiki Fest. I was really scared and did not know what to expect, but when we got there to the radio station, Uncle Garry helped us a lot. We both prac-ticed what we had to say on the radio, before going. It was the first time that I had ever been in a radio station – it was so cool. Uncle Garry gave us head phones to wear during the recording. After we finished, he played back what we recorded – it sounded funny to hear my voice on the radio. It was for a good cause and everyone heard me on the radio. I also attended a Cloverbud Easter activity. I was so excited to go because all my friends from the other 4H clubs were also attending. We played games and decorated Easter eggs and baskets. I had so much fun. I did not want it to end. This year was my last year as a Cloverbud, and I will be moving up to the older group (Juniors) with my older sister and cousins. I cannot wait for the next year to

start, so that I can begin having fun with them and learning new things.

KHM Scouting program’s Court of Honor held on May 21 provided a great time for all. The fol-lowing awards and ranks were given. Jeremiah received his CS Outdoor Activity Award and gradu-ated into the Webelos program. Trever is now a second year Webelo and will be working towards his Arrow of Light Award. Edgar and Micah received their Arrow of Light Award and crossed over the bridge to Troop 64. They were welcomed by Tenderfoot Scout AJ and Life Scout Devin. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this a special event for the Scouts.

VIDSTA (Valley Isle Dharma School Teachers’ Association) will have a weekend activity at Camp Olowalu from noon on September 14 until 11 a.m. on September 15. Cost is estimated to be $10 per student and $15 per adult. Space is still available for day participants. Solar Panels Report – Framework has been installed. Work will resume after coordination with Maui Electric and County. Because electricity will need to be shut down for installation of panels, scheduling will be planned with Preschool and temple input.

Schedule of Repair/Maintenance of Minister’s Residence – A target date for completion of construction work is June 14. Temple members’ assistance will be needed during the week of June 17-21 to clean and complete necessary tasks in the residence.

Yard Sale – President Janet Shimada requested that the Board discuss the date of this function as well as whether chow fun should be offered at this sale. This Yard Sale has been from the past, one for affiliate organizations and temple affiliated individuals to fundraise. No decision was made due to lack of quorum.

Welcome for Rev. and Mrs. Tennes – Arrival date is tentatively set for Friday, July 5, 2013. The official welcome will be extended at the Sunday service on July 7 with the refreshment area coordinated by the BWA.

NEW BUSINESS Exterior Chochin – 100 chochin and 100 tags (for acknowledging names of donors) have been ordered. Chochin may be placed up for sponsorship at a suggested donation of $20.

Per Kallie Keith-Agaran who attended the last Federation meeting in Honolulu, women are encouraged to participate as individual and district BWA groups in activities in the community and to wear organization shirts to be visible and active outside of the temple. Maui United BWA has been asked to help Jr. YBA organize Peace Day activities. Rev. Hironaka has agreed to serve as minister advisor for establishing Peace Day activities on Maui that can be perpetual.

OTHER BUSINESS

Rev. Hironaka encourages temple members to take advantage of more activities/speakers sponsored through the Maui Hongwanji Council and the Buddhist Study Center. Participation will promote the possi-bility for more activities being offered in the future. Rev. Hironaka expressed thanks to members who assist at the temple and take the responsibility to make KHM a vital part of the community and the island.

Memorial Service

A memorial service is held in gratitude for the compassion of Amida Buddha and the life of Nembutsu. It is a time for family members and friends to gather together on behalf of the de-parted person, to share their memories, and to express thankfulness and gratitude.

Monshu’s Message delivered following the annual commemoration of the Establishment of Jodo

Shinshu on April 15, 2013

On this occasion, I would like to announce that on June 5, 2014, I will be retiring from the posi-tions of jushoku, head resident minister of the Hongwanji temple and monshu of the Jodo Shinshu Hong-wanji-ha Buddhist organization. It has been 36 years since I assumed those posts in April 1977.

My predecessor, Shonyo Shonin, made his decision to retire at the conclusion of the combined observance of the 800th Anniversary of Shinran Shonin’s Birth and 750th Anniversary of the Establish-ment of Jodo Shinshu.

The 750th Memorial for Shinran Shonin was duly completed last year and I was fortunate to be able to officiate as the doshi, chanting leader, for many times, including the final session. Further, organ-izational restructuring of the Hongwanji temple and Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha institution has also been completed in accordance with the changes in society. A decade from now, the 850th Anniversary of Shinran Shonin’s Birth will be observed. I feel that this is an opportune time to take a new step forward.

Shimmon, who will succeed me to become the next monshu, has been engaged in various temple matters at Tsukiji Hongwanji as the fuku-jushoku, vice-resident minister, while also visiting various af-filiated temples in the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as many other regions to deepen his understand-ing of the current situation of our organization. I have confidence in him that he will become a new leader with fresh ideas and sufficient knowledge.

Here at Hongwanji, it is common that preparations for a certain event are begun more than a year beforehand. In following this custom and in order to make the transition as smooth as possible, I have taken this opportunity today to make this announcement.

Needless to say, even after retiring from the post of monshu, I will still remain as a Jodo Shinshu minister, and I will definitely continue my efforts to contribute towards the propagation of Jodo Shinshu and the prosperity of our organization.

As you heard just now, I will carry on the Jodo Shinshu tradition from June 2014.

The teaching of Jodo Shinshu has been transmitted for 790 years since Shinran Shonin completed his literary work, Kyōgyōshinshō (The True Teaching, Practice and Realization of the Pure Land Way). The truth expounded in it teaches us to become aware of our own self-centeredness and to revere and cherish every life regardless of self and other. I believe that this teaching is invaluable and most appropri-ate in regard to the chaotic state of contemporary society.

In sincere consideration of the illustrious history of this Jodo Shinshu tradition, I will endeavor to the utmost to transmit it to future generations.

ARRIVAL OF NEW MINISTERS

Rev. Mieko Majima … She has been studying Bukkyo-Gaku at Ryukoku University Graduate Course. She is scheduled to arrive at Hawaii on June 24, 2013.

Rev. Satoshi Tomioka … Graduated Ryukoku University Graduate Course (Major: Shinshugaku). Successfully obtained R1-VISA. Rev. Tomioka will have an audience with Gomonshu and re-ceive the official assignment to HHMH on June 27, 2013. He is scheduled to arrive at Hawaii on June 30, 2013.

Rev. Shinji Kawagoe … Graduated Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin “Kenkyuka”. Successfully obtained R1-VISA. Rev. Kawagoe will have an audience with Gomonshu and receive the official assignment to HHMH on June 27, 2013. He is scheduled to arrive at Hawaii on June 30, 2013.

JENNIFER TAIRA COMPOSES NEW GATHA

On May 21, 2013, composer Jennifer Taira was presented with a commission check of $1,000 by Bishop Eric Matsumoto for composing the music to the text of Buddha’s Great Light by Carrie Kawa-moto, winner of the 2011 Gatha Lyrics Contest. The music of the new gatha was designed for a contem-porary feel and to be sung by congregation or by two- or three-voice choir. This new work is expected to be featured at Choralfest 2014, tentatively planned for early fall of next year at the Hawaii Betsuin.

“The Power of Shin Buddhism” by Dr. Mark Unno Department of Religious Studies, University of Oregon

Mark Unno is Head of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Oregon, and Asso-ciate Professor of Japanese Buddhism. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His research is in Classical Japanese Buddhism, in particular Shin Buddhism, Zen, and Shingon. He also works in the areas of comparative religious thought, Buddhism and psychotherapy, and interreligious dialogue.
