Shortage of KVC KiltsDue to an increase in our roll, we are experiencing an extreme shortage of kilts available for our new students. If you do have a kilt at home that is not being used, we would be most grateful for any donations or if you prefer, sell it via our second hand uniform shop. Contact Kim Dasler on 027 488 5280 or call the school on 453 6035 or email [email protected], or simply drop it off to the main office, with your name and contact details and the amount you would like for the sale of the kilt. Many thanks.

The Library Week Mufti Day was incorrectly advertised to be held on 23 September. It was, in fact, held in August. There is NO mufti day next week. Thanks

Education Perfect NZ Māori CompetitionKia ora koutou! Last week, the Education Perfect website ran an online NZ Māori Competition from 10 to 13 September. 244 schools throughout New Zealand were involved. Students and staff were encouraged to answer as many questions as possible in the te reo Māori language section of the website over the four days. Three KVC students won Credit Awards (requires 500 points to qualify). Our highest ranking student, Margarita Ritchie (9Tc) placed 154th out of the 7186 students who answered questions. The other students were Reta Wilson-Coughlin (255th) and Bailey Redding (385th). This level of achievement required dedicating hours of online work, as well as knowledge of our beautiful reo. Thanks also to all of the KVC students who had a go, found that they knew more te reo Māori than they thought they did, and contributed to our overall score as a school. Mi or oo a or rawa i mahi i, hamii (If i wa’ for yo all hi a wold vr hav b achivd).Kaikorai Valley College was ranked 30th in the 244 schools taking part and 5th of 49 schools of comparable size. However, probably the most notable achievement - KVC came in as the top ranking school in Dunedin!

Words From the LibraryBook of the Week - ‘How to Bee’ by Bren Macdibble.A story about family, loyalty, kindness and bravery, set against an all-too-possible future where climate change has forever changed the way we live. Peony lives with her sister and grandfather on a fruit

Health IncubatorOn Wednesday, a group of students who are interested in pursuing a career path in Health had their last session for

the year at Dunedin Public Hospital. At each session we have been hearing from a variety of staff members who all have different positions at the hospital. This week we heard from an Occupational Therapist, a Paediatric Nurse, a Play Specialist in the Children’s Ward, a Nurse from the Accident and Emergency Department and a Business Analyst. We were able to visit the Children’s Ward and see the

treatment rooms, where students tried the mini respirators, which are used on babies. Thankfully the Accident and Emergency Department didn’t have any patients in the Resus area which enabled us to see variety of equipment used on patients during an emergency as well as having some of the systems explained to us.Over the four sessions that the students have attended during the year they have been introduced to career choices within health, both clinical and non-clinical. Through the use of stories, experiences and interactive sessions, students have gained a valuable insight into a variety of careers in the Health industry.Otago Polytechnic InformationThe following Information Evenings are available at Otago Polytechnic and are well worthwhile attending if you have are child who is thinking of or is intending to study there next year.
