Skate park worth the wait“This is a cool facility, Dargaville is a cool town and we should be proud to say we come from here.”

With those words, Kaipara Recreational Facilities Trust founding members Darleen Lang and Izaak Birch acknowledged the eight hundred submissions, nearly seven years since the idea took hold, countless delays, even more countless hours of volunteer work, goods and services scrounged wherever they could be found and of course money — $250,000 of it — and declared Dargaville’s new skate park open for business.

Brigade grateful for donations

Oh to look this good at 90!

Go Maungaturoto!

p Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Mitch King, receives two donations from Jean Sircombe (left) of the Big River Art Gallery and from Lyn McKenzie (right) from the Dargaville Quilters Club. The donations totaling just on $800, were from the raffle proceeds of quilts and artwork by the two clubs and were gratefully received by the brigade.

p It was a very different world when this 1923 Rolls Royce came off the Derby assembly line in the UK, but 90 years on and the car is still going strong and looking good. Don Cresswell was up from Thames visiting family in his immaculate 20hp roadster. No ‘Ghost’ or ‘Wraith’ names for this one — the 20hp was so named as it was meant to be driven by the owner — no chauffeur required!

p The Carters Maungaturoto D grade womens squash team had a fantastic win in Tauranga last week, exceeding all expectations as they were seeded 8 in a 10 province competition but came out first, overcoming four challenges before taking out the final against Palmerston North. An afternoon tea and auction of donated artworks will be held at Mangawhai Domain Hall at 1.30pm on August 23 in aid of 11-year-old Brennan Massey, a pupil at Mangawhai Beach School, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. But that's not holding him back.

“My muscles are wasting away — it makes it really difficult for me to move and walk around,” says Brennan.

“Each day, things just get a little bit harder. However, in the past four months I have discovered Powerchair Football, also known as Power Soccer and have been playing nearly every weekend. It seems like I'm pretty good at it.

“After completing the New Zealand national training camp. I have been selected for the New Zealand team to play against Australia! Me, in a wheelchair — playing soccer for New Zealand.”

Brennan's family and supporters are seeking funds to cover his trip, with his father as carer, while the family covers

costs for his mother and little brother to join them.

The fundraising effort is being supported by artist Donna Curtis.

“I have watched Bren battle with his condition all his life,” she says. “He is a stoic, determined, brave young lad. If anyone has a piece of art they are able to donate it would be greatly appreciated.”

p Off to represent New Zealand — Brennan Massey“We had a huge range of people,

locals I had not seen for years as well as people from all over Kaipara and further afield,” said WAG spokesperson, Lorraine Rowland.

“The event exceeded all our expectations and people commented that it was totally spectacular.”

For the first time the event was run in two sessions, a matinee and an evening gala performance and prizegiving.

The supreme prize went to design students Mia Tong and Kohl Tyler-

Dunshea with their sci-fi entry named Gastrodopian Race.

A creation of wire, plastic, paint and polystyrene, it depicted a human carrying a giant shell as a home, and earned them tickets to the WOW wearable arts event in Wellington next month, along with accommodation and flights.

“We had great sponsorship and entries from all over the district and it has become apparent that the event is now firmly set in the Kaipara calendar,” said Lorraine. ¢

Exams are key to the future Cinema a jewel in community crown

The time of year that many secondary school students dread is approaching — end of year exams. Of the 290,000 students potentially sitting exams nationally, more than 1200 are in the Kaipara district and all local high schools agree the exams are critical.

Careers Advisor at Dargaville High School, Julie Chiaroni, says both practice and external exams play vital roles.

“Along with gaining credits, exams add academic rigor to courses, provide essential skills for tertiary study and means to progress to the next level.

“Students cannot gain subject endorsements if they do not sit at least one external in that subject, so we encourage all students to aim high and sit external examinations.”

Principal of Ruawai College, Stephen Fordyce agrees and says because of exam importance, the school is as usual, holding practice exams this week in preparation of the main event.

“While they are practice exams, they are designed to identify students’ needs now, and also to improve performance at the real exams in November and December, so attending and staying to the end is critical. Practice improves performance.”

Both say while there are no real shortcuts, there are some useful tips that will ease the pressure:

• Do revision several weeks before the exams.

• Studying in the right environment is important. Lying on the floor or a bed is not ideal.

Less than two months after opening its doors, the ANZAC Theatre in Dargaville continues to go from strength to strength.

Manager Vernon Woods says since the end of the school holidays more than 8000 adult and senior tickets and more than 2000 student and children’s tickets have been sold.

He says the response has been steadily growing and feedback has all been positive.

“We are also enjoying a good relationship with the main movie suppliers and so can usually source all the main ‘must see’ attractions without too much hassle.”

He said the 60 plus seat theatre is

• Make sure you have an achievable study timetable. Too much can be as bad as not enough.

• Take orderly study notes that you can reference later.

• Nearer to the day, summarise notes by re-writing and condensing.

• Use previous exam papers — these are great study aids and most schools will have them or have websites easily available.

• The day before your exam, study the subject, review and then get plenty of sleep.

• Do not over study. You can cram to the point where it all becomes a meaningless blur.

For parents:• Positively reinforce — don’t say the

world will end if students don’t study.• Have rules around going out and

sleep. These can be negotiable — but the one rule is study must be done.

• Reward good work and effort. There are a several useful study

websites and flashcard apps and both schools can provide these, but one of the most popular is www.studyit.org.nz ¢

Sam is off to FinlandIf you think it’s a bit chilly now, spare a thought for Sam Willdig come January as he will be in Finland, where he says it’s likely to be around minus 30 degrees!

The Year 13 Dargaville High School student will be away for a year on a Rotary Club sponsored placement and says while he will be at school, it will be mainly for experience as he will have finished his secondary schooling here.

Sam says he was very lucky to be chosen as the country has one of the highest standards of education in the world.

“Rotary took us away for a weekend of quite in depth interviews, but they did not really say exactly what they were looking for in likely candidates, other than to ask us questions around how we would handle key events and situations around cultural and language issues.”

Sam does not yet know what part of Finland he’ll be based in and admits he does not yet have a wide knowledge of the country. His mother, Carol says they currently have everything in the house labelled in Finnish to help Sam become acclimatised prior to his mid-January departure.

She says fundraising is now critical and they are already planning raffles and garage sales.

“While Rotary have been wonderful in getting us this far, we have to raise funds for the trip and right now we are looking desperately for any sort of job Sam can do, so if anyone can help, we want to hear from them.”

As for any pre lift-off fear, Sam says his only mild concern is that he doesn’t eat much fish and Finland is apparently known for a heavy fish diet.

He says he may have to try reindeer steaks. ¢

Forty years since Annie was last in townu by Alan Wheatley

It has been 40 years since the Kaipara has heard the songs of Irving Berlin’s hit musical, Annie Get Your Gun, but from the end of September, the iconic musical will be on stage at the Dargaville Little Theatre.

Director Keith Allen says a musical this size is always a challenge.

“In the old days, we had a huge choice of singers and actors lined up waiting, now we’re lucky if barely enough to cast a show actually audition.”

Musical director Julianne Parkinson agrees.

“It’s not that there is no talent out there, people just don’t apply, or worse, have no idea they actually can perform, when in fact they are brilliant. It’s one of the reasons we haven’t done many musicals.”

The 1950s comedy is loosely based on the life of wild west sharpshooter Annie Oakley and

along with being a Broadway smash, later became an academy award winning movie.

With a cast of 34, Keith says everything about the show is big.

“We’ve had to pay big royalties for the script rights and with costumes, lighting and other costs, were up in the six thousands just to put it on, and we’re also up against the clock to get it all ready to go on time — it’s just a big production.”

Rehearsals are in full swing and the show will open on September 21st for eight performances including two matinées, with tickets on sale now at Dargaville Curtain and Sewing Centre.

New look for local government by Christmas?

p The Chair of the Local Government Commission, Basil Morrison, with fellow commissioner Anne Carter at Dargaville’s Lighthouse Centre

The shape of local government in the Kaipara region will not be known until well after October’s local body elections at the earliest.

That was the message delivered to more than thirty Dargaville residents by Basil Morrison, chair of the Local Government Commission, during one of thir teen Northland community consultations being held during August. Mr Morrison was supported at the Lighthouse meeting by fellow commissioner, Anne Carter.

The Local Government Commiss ion i s considering applications to change the structure of the Far North, Whangarei and Kaipara District Councils and the Northland Regional Council.

The original application was made by the Far North District Council (FNDC) supported by Te Tai Tokerau Iwi Leaders’ Forum. The Commission called for alternative applications and received forty-one responses. (These can be found at http://www.lgc.govt.nz/lgcwebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/News-Index!OpenDocument)

Mr Morrison told the meeting that community views were critical, but he urged residents to remember whatever they sought had to be viable and relevant not just in the short term, but for 20 or 30 years ahead.

‘Whatever draft we bring back must also have the demonstrated support of the people, but if there is no will for change then the status quo will most likely remain.”

Comments from those at the meeting centred on ensuring the Kaipara continued to have a locally accessible voice in whatever option emerged, while others voiced fears

that the Dargaville area would disappear into a governing structure based in and serving only major population or tourism areas.

Other speakers cited concerns over savings that could result from restructuring and centralising being lost in the form of more local government unemployment and a decline of services.

The meeting heard if the so called “super city” idea of one council for the whole of Northland went ahead then effective local boards that people could readily access would have to be created.

Mr Morrison urged people to remember that whatever they opted for, the more involved it was, the more it would cost.

“It really comes down to how much people want to pay for local governance and ensuring that the structure being sort has enough resources to actually make it happen in the best way for everyone.”

Mr Morrison said it was hoped to have the first draft proposal out for public consultation and feedback before Christmas. ¢

Fundraising never tasted so good!It may have been the early spring sunshine, but Dargaville came alive last Friday to the sound of fundraising for worthy causes.

The Cure Kids Red Nose day was in full swing with both ASB and BNZ banks doing their bit with excellent food on sale.

The BNZ, known for their fundraising BBQ’s, had a lunchtime sausage sizzle that was well patronised with staff hard at it on the grill plate, while down the road and in support of their colleagues, ASB staff were selling an excellent array of homemade cakes,

both raising money for the red nose day appeal.

On a slightly different tack, a team of equally hard-working mums were outside Jon Matich Surfwear, selling all manner of home cooking to raise funds for the year 3 Dargaville Primary School netball team, the Diamonds, to go and see the Silver Ferns play Australia at Vector Arena on September 19th.

Vital preservation work is at risku by Alan Wheatley

A lot of hard dune preservation work completed by members of the Baylys Beach Society and students from Dargaville Intermediate School has been ruined by trail bike riders.

Around 18 Year 7 and 8 students from Dargaville Intermediate School joined members of the Baylys Beach Society recently, to help plant stabilising vegetation on some of the steeper dunes at the beach.

The students were from the school’s environmental studies class, and teacher Diane Papworth said in just over half a school day, the students planted more than 800 Spinifex and Pingao plants, supplied from the society’s stock of 1100 plants, donated by the Northland Regional Council.

Society spokesperson Maurice Weatherall, says the work on the Chasers Gorge part of the beach entrance was also fenced off, but trail bikers still got in and rode through the new plantings,

causing damage estimated at more than $500.

“We struggle to get funding and plants and the work is a labour of love. The NRC has been really generous in supplying the plants and fencing but to have this happen is just heartbreaking.”

Maurice says he hopes someone can identify the culprits and let him know, as not only is it the hard work that is destroyed but the bikes also endanger the very existence of the dunes if they can’t be preserved.

“Both the Pingao and Spinifex sand-binding grasses are extremely hardy and survive the elements well, but must be allowed to get a proper hold if our work is to be successful.” ¢

TREAT DAD TO SOME POWERTHIS FATHER’S DAY

Happy FATHER’S DAYHappy FATHER’S DAYAYAYAYAYAYWhere does Father’s Day come from?According to Wikipedia Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting.

After the success obtained by Anna Jarvis with the promotion of Mother’s Day in the US, some wanted to create similar holidays for other family members, and Father’s Day was the choice most likely to succeed.

There were other persons in the US who independently thought of Father’s Day, but the credit for the modern holiday is often given to Sonora Dodd, who was the driving force behind its establishment.

Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by

Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910.

Dodd’s father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.

After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them.

It did not have much success initially but eventually, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

For many Kiwi fathers their greatest joy is their children, so to be recognised by a special day is almost an embarrassment as they cannot believe their luck at becoming fathers in the first place.

In recognising fathers with a gift — it is the thought that really counts — a hand-made card from their five-year-old can hold more value than a bottle of the finest malt whisky.

So when choosing a gift for the special man in the family think about what they take delight in or what occupies them in their spare time when they are not working. ¢

Happy FATHER’S DAYHappy FATHER’S DAYAYAYAYAYAY

The eatery, which promises an exotic, flavourful menu drawn from the rich culinary traditions of northern Thailand, was blessed by a trio of traditional Buddhist monks, in a ceremony which has been used to auspiciously favour new endeavours such as this for centuries.

The blessing is enacted to assure good fortune, and to show respect for the traditional Buddhist faith of Thailand. The monks travelled from the buddhist temple in West Auckland, but all three are originally from Thailand, and are staying here in New Zealand as part of a sabbatical exchange.

Proprietors Donald and Thanyalak presented an offering of freshly prepared food to the trio — a selection from a menu which is sure to introduce Dargaville folks to new realms of

A traditional start to this taste adventure

gourmet experience. The name itself — Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee translates into english as ‘Thai restaurant with very good cuisine’ — a promise which the local couple are proud to live up to!

Now open — and with the blessing complete — the aim of Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee is to treat the people of the Kaipara to new taste sensations, with a menu full of spice and flavour.

Fans of Thai cuisine will find many unique dishes here to sample and enjoy — especially those which are perhaps unfamiliar, coming from the northern Thai tradition.

It's a fine opportunity to open up new taste horizons, and experience, too, a little of this fascinating culture right here in Dargaville.

House prices are still low in rural New Zealand, the property market having had a large gain has now levelled off, but this will not be the case for ever and it is just a matter of time before prices start heading upwards again.

Interest rates are also comparatively low in terms of where they have been in recent times. It is important to discuss all options available with your bank or mortgage broker, for example, to fix at a very competitive rate for a home loan for the appropriate number of years.

In addition to these two factors there is a potential for those first home buyers who contribute to KiwiSaver to access part of their funds. They may also qualify for a first home subsidy administered by Housing New Zealand.

To withdraw some of your KiwiSaver savings to help buy your first home you have to have been a KiwiSaver member for three years or more.

The amount you are able to withdraw consists of your individual contributions, any employer contributions and any investment returns.

The Government’s $1,000 kick-start and any annual Government contributions cannot be included in a First Home Withdrawal. These funds remain in your KiwiSaver and continue to grow. The First Home Withdrawal is paid directly to your solicitor before settlement. If you purchase a home before you have been a KiwiSaver member for three years, you will no longer qualify for a first home withdrawal.

If you have been a contributing

First home buyersu by Alistair Hammond

First home buyers, it’s a great time to be thinking about purchasing a first home! Yes it’s true! There are a number of factors that mean now is quite possibly the best time for buying and saving by paying your mortgage off rather than paying the landlord for rent. And while most business owners

understand their Profit and Loss statement, the Balance Sheet can sometimes be a bit murky.

A good accountant will take time to walk you through these as they reflect how the business has performed and how much tax needs to be paid.

And quite often the financial statements then disappear in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet.

In our view, financial statements should be looked at more closely as they contain a wealth of information that allows the business owner to work smarter, not harder. Or make the right decisions.

For instance, how does your gross profit margin compare with the previous years? If it has dropped, do you know why? And if the profit and loss statement shows a positive figure right at the bottom, why is there no cash left in the bank? I recently discussed financial

statements with one of my clients — we’ll call him Moe and he runs a tavern.

We spoke about how the cash flows through his business and how he lives a good life from it, a very good life.

We also discovered that he had to make some significant changes to keep his business going. To put it simply, while the band was playing, the ship was sinking.

It’s all about asking the right questions. Further, your business banker should be able to give you some insights into how the business has performed.

At Westpac, we love to analyse financial statements and then discuss the outcome with our clients.

If you’ve asked the right questions but did not get the right answers, please give us a call.

You’ll be surprised what a set of financial statements can tell you.

It is that time of the year again when many business owners get a call from their accountant to hear that the financial statements are done.

Asking the right questions

KiwiSaver member for three years or more, you may also be entitled to a First Home Subsidy.

The First Home Subsidy is $1,000 for each year you have been a contributing KiwiSaver member, up to a maximum of $5,000.

The First Home Subsidy is administered by Housing New Zealand and is paid directly to your solicitor on the day of settlement.

If you are purchasing a property with someone else, you may both be eligible to withdraw from your KiwiSaver funds and for a first home subsidy.

So as you can see it is a very good time for first home buyers to get into the property market and take that step.

Call your bank and see what they can do for you. Call Hammonds Law to discuss how your property purchase will run from start to finish and how we will help you prepare the required documentation for your KiwiSaver withdrawal and First Home Subsidy. ¢

Paparoa now hosts a one-stop shop for a wide variety of marine delights, thanks to the opening of Zephyr Oyster farms processing plant and retail outlet.

Gerrard of Zephyr, along with Michelle Kingi, are manning the Paparoa main street business, after taking over the vacant former butcher's shop two months ago.

The premises have undergone a thorough revamp to suit the new role, already proving popular with locals and travellers, although the later might miss the discrete signage on the front window.

Gerrard sources his oysters from his own Kaipara farms. “Our mussels come in from the Coromandel at present and we are looking at other Northland sources,” he said. “Our whole aim is to source our seafood locally.

But the successful competitive driver is nothing if not a fighter — he grabbed the chance to race again with both hands, graduating to a souped-up Subaru rally car and then to pride of place with Polaris NZ’s racing team.

The machine he has recently driven to victory in the muddy, slippery and downright challenging Gwavas 200 Enduro is a Polaris RZR XP 900 — a side-by-side two seater similar, cosmetically at least, to the Ranger UTVs which are gaining popularity on local farms.

The same combo of grunt, clever chassis setup, long-travel independent suspension and serious grip makes the RZR he pilots through the rough stuff a real contender, beating every other vehicle both in its own class and across the board at the Gwavas. That’s no mean feat.

Ben took out not just first on the day and first in class, but also outright victory in the entire North Island series, monstering huge 700 horsepower trophy trucks and thundering V8s with his light, quick 900cc machine.

“The muddy conditions at the Gwavas 200 were perfectly suited to the RZR,” says Ben.

p The Polaris RZR XP 900

Performance from the farm to the gridOffroad racer Ben Thomasen could have hung up his boots when a serious crash put an end to his motocross career.

“The highlight for me was that not only is the RZR a very economical and enjoyable way of Racing, but the 900cc, 88 hp engine in the Polaris RZR provided plenty of power — to not only beat the expensive and high horsepower vehicles we race against, but we lapped them too!”

After 15 years of motocross racing, the need for speed is still very much a part of this talented racer’s life.

He may be on four wheels rather than two now, and sporting the catch phrase ‘with age, get a cage’, but with performance like this there’s no way you’ll catch Ben sitting on the sidelines any time soon.

And Polaris, now sitting at the top of the NZ offroad table, are garnering plenty of attention for their farming models with big wins on the racing circuit.

On Tuesday 20 August my wife and I attended a meeting at the lighthouse regarding the Kaipara district’s future.

Two commissioners out of the three attended and chaired the meeting. Whatever decisions are made, it will impact on where people want to and can live, where young people think they can get jobs.

The presentation and the discussions appeared to be centered around the wider economics of Northland, Northland having a unified voice for central Government, cost savings from duplications e.g. District plans, economies of scale for roading etc.

What was lacking from the meeting was the social impact of being taken over, amalgamated, absorbed or whatever words you want to use.

No doubt yes, there would be savings. With no Council, CEO, probably the majority of Council staff gone, Council’s main contractors Downer, Transfield would bring efficiencies by downsizing and bring in staff as required and losing their local administration staff. The catch cry would be cost savings, bigger is better.

Would any money saved; — go towards our rates?

— give us extra services?

— Would savings be spent here?In other words, would savings made

from us, come back to us?There is always a social cost

whenever something is taken away from communities, e.g. in Dargaville our youth can no longer obtain their driver’s licenses, and they have to go to Whangarei.

The fallout from this is there is only ½ the amount of young people obtaining their driving licenses, for various reasons, cost, time, etc. The young people are still driving, as living in a rural area, you need to be able to drive to get to work.

This decision is having a huge impact. Yes, this has saved money, but what is it costing?

The social effects of any decisions made, takes time to impact as some are visible and many are invisible.

This is a part of a wider issue that needs to be thought about by all involved.
