Colleen Urlich regards her New Year honour as recognition for many other people

Honours bring ‘community recognition’Almost two weeks after being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Dargaville artist Colleen Urlich was packing her bags to leave the country.

“I guess it’s finally sunk in,” she said of her honour in the New Year list.

“But I have just kept working as usual. I actually baked some Afghan biscuits to celebrate,” she quipped.

The award was bestowed for services to Maori art, and she has credited it to “my iwi, my marae, Toi Maori Aotearoa, Nga Kaihanga Uku, particularly the Artists Collective of Te Tai Tokerau and their superb artists and exhibitors — this is really a recognition of all those people,” she said.

Ms Urlich spoke to The Lifestyler as she packed for a trip to Australia, and was due to fly out on Tuesday this week.

“In the meantime it has been work and of course keeping up with all the emails and phone calls over the award.”

Leadership report

New year’s wedding

Wai Worri about weather

A Kaipara student at Auckland University, Jake Powell, has reported back to Rotary on his Youth Leadership Award which was supported by the Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club. The award covers a week-long leadership development programme for 19–26 year olds. Jake, shown here with local Rotary president, Jim Taylor, was a guest speaker at the Rotary meeting at Maungaturoto and gave a presentation on his time spent at the Muriwai event, where fitness and team building was part of the programme.

It was the perfect day for a wedding at Waikara Marae, on the sunny coast just north of Maunganui Bluff, as Jay Tane and the Kaipara Lifestyler’s own Kylie Tane nee McMullen celebrated their marriage under clear blue skies. After the ceremony the pair stopped for photos on the picture-perfect west coast shoreline before returning to the marae for the reception.

The Wai Worri Country Woolshed Muster kept the music alive at Aranga last weekend. “We have certainly had the most motorhomes and campers to date, aided by the fine weather and a good selection of musicians,” said organiser Phil Godfrey, who hosts the two-day music festival. Australia’s Allan Webster was the headline act, supported by popular artists from throughout the country.

Birdman

war Turkey to find his sons, lost in the disastrous

Gallipoli landings.

Mr Turner

A historic, anarchic and candid look at artist

Joseph Turner - a living national treasure of Britain

in the 1800s, a visionary but also a scoundrel to

the core - a scandaliser of the aristocracy but a

friend to royalty.

The Hobbit:The Battle of the Five Armies

The final instalment of Peter Jackson’s epic

fantasy trilogy sees the stoical mountain dwarves

face off against rampaging orcs and goblins in

dragon Smaug lays waste to the land. From the

book which inspired everything from Led Zep to

World of Warcraft.

What we did on our Holidays

A stellar British cast (including ex Doctor

Who David Tennant and comedian Billy Conolly)

present a family drama-comedy featuring sibling

New vocation forlong-serving teacher by Colin Patterson

After three decades at Maungaturoto School, Alison Robinson has said good-bye and this year she will expand her teaching horizons.

Ms Robinson has a new job with a private company and the year ahead will see her visiting schools throughout Northland and working as a maths facilitator.

With her own children having finished university, Ms Robinson says the time is right to move on. “I’m definitely not retiring. I’m moving in a different direction.”

“I get the best of both worlds. I’ll still be supporting teachers but I’ll be working with a wider group of them,” she says

Her old school farewelled the long serving teacher as deputy principal.

“I came here as a first-year teacher and after teaching for six years I took a couple of years off to have children. Then I came back to work and have been here since.”

In her time Ms Robinson has been a jack of all trades.

“I’ve been deputy principal, acting principal, reading recovery teacher, special needs teacher and sports coordinator.”

Her time at Maungaturoto School has encompassed the full gamut, from the old days of blackboards and chalk-and-talk to ipads, iphones and computers. “Tomorrow’s Schools

Summer accolade for local Te Arai artist by Andy Bryenton

For the past 21 years the Snell’s Beach Great Summer Art Exhibition has been a showcase of local talent, growing alongside the popular coastal community to become a well regarded feature on the summer calendar.

With the Snells Beach, Matakana and Leigh area now enjoying some considerable prestige, this annual competition attracts a huge number of patrons and art lovers, as well as a wealth of creative works on display.

In the recent exhibition and competition, Te Arai based artist Donna Shadick has scored a significant coup, with her painting ‘Power’ being picked from among over 400 entries to receive an award. While this year saw Donna achieve second place overall in the intermediate category (the largest category in the contest, reserved for artists for whom art is not their full-time job), it’s still a fine achievement when one considers the scope of talent on display.

Donna’s painting, ‘Power’ depicts an African rhinoceros, advancing confidently on the viewer. Clever use of light and

shadow seems to make the imposing beast step right out of the canvas, and close-in detail picks out the rhino’s tough, weathered hide.

The aptly named painting was snapped up by an astute buyer during the exhibition.

Like many creative people, Donna says that the choice to depict such a subject was pure inspiration. While she says that she enjoys painting images from nature, the idea to capture the strength and presence of rhinos in her exhibition pieces was simply an inspired idea — though the thought of traveling to Africa to see such creatures in the wild would be fantastic.

Up next for the local artist is the Mangawhai Art Trail in March, which promises to offer a similar crop of locally produced artworks at a very high level, across a variety of mediums.

was a huge change,” she says. “But the passion of the teachers hasn’t changed and the children are still the same.”

Ms Robinson says the interaction and relationships with the children she has taught kept her at Maungaturoto School for so long. “I’ve taught the children of the children I taught in my early years. I’ve even taught a couple of the current staff.”

Ms Robinson was farewelled at a special assembly.

Boating club eases access by Ann Morgan

With new drink driving laws in force, Dargaville’s local boating club has taken steps to ensure their patrons arrive home safe and happy.

Handy newbusiness for Dargaville by Andy Bryenton

Kiwis have always been resourceful when it comes to those renovation projects, and this has seen a rise in popularity for demolition traders — centres where doors, windows, fittings, benchtops and cabinetry are taken from deconstructed homes and given a new lease on life.

For the past six years, Sharon and Wayne Constable have been amassing a collection of windows, doors and joinery at their Kaipara home. Buying and selling online, they have turned an initial miscalculation when renovating their own home into a burgeoning small business.

That first house-lot of framed windows may be gone, but the demand is still strong for an affordable renovation solution and so, this week, the Constables have opened the doors of their new venture in Dargaville — a demolition ‘super store’ on the site of the former Duck Creek nursery.

The Constable family have worked hard to transform the site on Gladstone street from horticulture to a handyman’s dream. Now rows of framed doors and windows line the covered outdoor racking, with landscape items, railway sleepers and more to come. The aim is to have everything on hand for inside and out.

Wayne and Sharon know from experience that many local homes are in need of some attention, but that the cost of renovations is often a deciding factor. By recycling perfectly functional fixtures

The Northern Wairoa Boating club has purchased a van to make access to functions and social events easier for members and club users.

“Patrons can organise with us the time they want to be picked up or driven home from the club. We will possibly work on a shuttle timetable for dropping off.

“The van is still in the infant stages of progress, we expect the shuttle to be a great success in the future,” said committee member Dennis Hunt. “We get busy particularly over the summer

period and the club is a great place to come and meet people. People can apply to join as either a social or full member by contacting the club.”

Drink driving limits changed on December 1, this change means that drivers aged 20 years or over cannot drive if they have more that 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, or the alcohol in their blood is more than 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

For drivers under the age of 20 years, the limit is zero.

Boating club courtesy van driver Dennis Hunt with members Noelene Hunt, Bill Berridge and Bill Theobald

from demolished buildings, those costs can be reduced. Right now, the I-Deal Demo delivery truck is busy moving even more stock in from the Constable’s home to their new business. But soon Wayne plans to be out on the road each week, delivering all the materials for some serious renovation projects.

Carpenter Wayne Millan and plumber Bill Fitness are ready to assist with installation for those who need professional advice, while professional glaziers Window and Door Services are just across the road, Northern Wairoa Hire are next door for customers’ power tool needs, and locksmithing services from Farrand and Mason are just around the corner. Dargaville has a new renovation district, and it’s just in time for summer projects.

It’s the time of year when we decide to paint the house, roof, trim trees, and do general maintenance. If you’re a boat owner, you may be looking at heading out on the water for the holidays. Before you start putting up scaffolding or thinking about the route you’ll take be aware of the hazards involving overhead powerlines.

In general, overhead electricity lines are not insulated and if contact – or near contact - is made with them – including fishing rods and lines, kites or model plane controls, the electricity will pass through the object with the risk of injuring or killing anyone holding or near to the object. Be aware that a truck, crane, forklift, irrigation pipe, marquee, boat mast or even a tall ladder accidentally touching an overhead power line can lead to serious injury or death. If you’re planning home maintenance over the holidays such as painting or trimming trees, be careful when you are working in the vicinity of powerlines where they enter your house. These lines are not safe to touch.

Follow these electrical safety tips for a safe summer:

• Look up and look out for overhead powerlines when boating, flying kites or handling any tall objects e.g. ladders or aerials.

• Check before you dig and be aware of underground electricity, gas, fibre optics cables or water services.

• Think safety and consult with Northpower before working anywhere near powerlines, Plan your work and arrange to have the power disconnected, if necessary.

• Plant trees well away from powerlines and keep branches trimmed before they get too close.

• Always use a Residual Current Device (RCD) or an isolating transformer when using any outdoor electrical equipment

• Before boating, know the height of your aerials and masts above land when towing and above water when sailing. Keep boat movement on shore with your masts or aerials up to a minimum. Remember, high voltage electricity can jump to your mast or aerial if they get near enough to a wire, and the power can then burn or kill you or those nearby.

If you see downed lines, stay away and keep other people away and call Northpower faults 0800 10 40 40

Just bowling alongIt was a case of sun-block and hats at a family bowls day at Maungaturoto over the New Year break which attracted several family groups among 76 players who braved sweltering conditions.

“People from Paparoa, Pahi, Whakapirau, and Mangawhai took part as well as many from Maungaturoto,” said organiser, Albie Paton.

“Many of the children taking part showed considerable promise. We had a total of 76 people and after sorting out the teams we played three games of 50 minutes each.

“A fourth game was scheduled but owing to the heat we decided three were enough. In keeping with the fun day, points were deemed rather irrelevant and the winners were all decided by numbers drawn out of a hat.

“The two main prizes — a night for two at the Scenic Hotel in Paihia and a trip for two to the Hole in the Rock with Fullers were won by Dave Orford and by one 'Dwayne from Auckland' who was staying at Paparoa and saw the poster in the hotel there and cycled over with a mate for the day.

“Thanks to Scenic and Fullers for their support as well as the many other sponsors on the day.”

Bowler Dave Orford was delighted to receive a Bay of Islands prize package from Marge Paton

Tinopai’s top fishing contest“We are really rapt, some good fish were caught, we had a really great crowd, and excellent, if very hot weather.”

Tinopai School principal, Sonia Kaihe was thrilled with the day. While she is still to meet with her organising team to formalise the official results of the Tinopai Fishing Contest held last Saturday, but if euphoria was the official result, it was there in spades.

“We were very pleasantly surprised at how well it went,” said Sonia, admitting to ‘some trepidation’ as alcohol in the school precincts was banned this year for the first time.

The event raises funds for the school, and in the past has provided computers and last year, a fund was started for a van to transport sports teams to competitions against other Kaipara schools.

“It was a really great crowd and a great atmosphere with things like the winner of the $1,000 spot prize immediately donating part of his win back to the school,” added Ms Kaihe.

The winning snapper weighed in at 6.2 kilos.

“In fact, I managed to buy it at the auction after the prize-giving. It went

on the barbecue that night, stuffed with herbs and home-made bread. It was delicious.”

When the accounts and results are settled this week, money raised will go into the school van fund.

Restoring the balance with respite careRespite care is designed to provide a short-term break for someone caring for a loved one at home.

ADVERTOR IA L

It can also provide a positive, stimulating and worthwhile experience for the person in a residential care home — which may even be an introduction to a longer period of care at a later stage.

The whole purpose of respite care is to provide some well-deserved time out for the carer to help relieve stress, restore energy and promote a new sense of life and balance. It also provides an opportunity for the person receiving care to participate in our care home environment first hand.

Most full time carers and their loved ones are entitled to some respite care. Respite or short stay care can be accessed via respite and carer support funding, or you may choose to pay for the service privately. With the right assessment and care options

available, we can provide the appropriate support for both the carer and the person who needs care. We will work together with families to make sure we provide the maximum level of support and share responsibility to care for your loved one, while you take a break.

Over the summer, we have a holiday inspired menu and activities planned that are simple but fun, so that your loved one can have some time out.

At Kauri Coast we will guarantee bed bookings from December to February, so that you and your family can make holiday plans.

For more information about respite and day care options please call Rik Walstra at Kauri Coast Rest Home and Hospital.

There’s a real sense of friendship and community among the residents at Kauri Coast - and for many people, visiting here for respite care can be an extremely positive experience

Horse trek for social clubThe Dargaville Dalmatian social club are holding their second annual horse trek on Saturday, January 31 at 10am.

“The first trek last year was a fun idea to raise funds for our clubroom roof repairs.” said committee member Venessa Anich.

“Like any community group with a building, we need to keep in mind future repairs and expenses. Our building is more than five decades old and extra funds raised will go toward future needs of the building in general. Last years trek was very successful with more

than 50 participants so we decided to do it again. That way as repairs arise we have funds readily available. This years fundraising will also help paint the inside of the club hall.”

This year it is around Glinks Gully, Te Maire and Ripiro Beach. Last year we had a lovely ride, at Mititai.

“In this year’s ride we are meeting at Tim Antonio’s farm at Glinks Gully. He will be leading across a few farms in the area with fantastic scenery and views from forestry to beach, and stopping at the Te Marie school for lunch then continuing on along the beach and riding through the Glinks Gully community and heading home around 3pm.”

“It is a good day out and the opportunity to ride with a large group is not always an option available for horse lovers. You do need your own horse for this trek, children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.”

It is an opportunity to see parts of the west coast which you normally wouldn’t be able to access as well.

For more information phone Venessa Anich on 09 439 5900 or 0220 439 839

Summertime is a busy time for coastguard personnel around the country. Water safety patrols and rescues come at a cost however, so local North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard stalwarts were out raising funds with raffle tickets on sale at the Paparoa Farmers Market over New Year. Left to right: NKVC president, Walter Smith, congratulates volunteer Andrew Kenny, and long-serving base radio operator, Dorothy Quaife on good ticket sales

Restricted fire season starts by Joanne Speechly

A restricted fire season is now in place for all rural areas of the Kaipara District.

This means that permits are required for outdoor fires. Visit www.havingafire.org.nz for application forms and further information.

The restrictions do not apply to gas barbecues, hangi, cultural cooking fires, wood-fired barbecues, spits or braziers. These are permitted provided certain conditions are met.

Cooking fires are permissible if: supervised by a responsible adult at all times; a pressurised supply of water is at hand; the fire is put out as soon as cooking is finished; a clear area of at least 10 metres is maintained around

the fire; and the fire is no larger than 2 x 2 metres.

A warranted fire officer can request that any barbecue, incinerator or other fire be extinguished if considered a danger.

The restrictions came into force from midnight on Friday, January 9 and will remain in place until further notice.

A Kaipara District Council spokesperson says if the summer remains dry, it is quite likely that a total fire ban may be required. Restrictions are now in place throughout Northland.

Safety at sea is a package dealCoastguard volunteers around the Northland coast have seen an increasing number of craft putting to sea as the weather has improved, and with it an increase in incidents.

Operations manager for Coastguard Northern Region, Ray Burge, says those incidents have remained relatively minor, in the context of the recent drowning fatalities at the Manukau bar.

“Some of these can be put down to just bad luck at the time,” he said.

“However, many are preventable events, such as battery or fuel problems which indicate a lack of preparation and maintenance before setting out on the boat.

“But we have been pleased to see an increase in communications with skippers reporting in on the radio with details of time planned, destination and passengers on board and so on.

“What we are really looking for is skipper responsibility. As much as communications gear and life jackets, it is important that someone on board, the skipper, is responsible for safety. It is not just one thing — it is a package of responsibility, including avoiding alcohol, and ensuring everyone is safely back on shore

Meanwhile, as a volunteer organisation, funding is critical to Coastguards continuing operations and they seek support with the chance of a big payback through their summer

There are three more boats to win plus a luxury holiday, a huge 70" Sony TV and local Coastguard units are selling tickets. Each ticket they sell raises $7 for the area concerned.

“Buying a coastguard lottery ticket is a great way to have a bit of fun, be in with a brilliant chance of winning a sensational prize, and support the lifesaving work of New Zealand’s search and rescue volunteers,” said North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard president Walter Smith.

The lottery is authorised to raise funds to enhance the operational standards of 70 dedicated Volunteer Coastguard Search and Rescue units by providing search and rescue equipment and training.

It closes on February 12 and is drawn by lot at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre in Auckland — the results published on February 22.

Prepared to weather the hard knocks by Andy Bryenton

The Polaris Ranger has proven a hit on Kiwi farms, with its combination of utility, safety and economical power.

In both petrol and diesel powered forms, the tough side-by-side UTVs have become a fixture of the rural landscape, spawning many imitators and contenders for the crown.

That’s why Polaris have engaged in some serious research before unveiling their new Ranger 570 — a machine which they say sets a new benchmark. To do this, they haven’t turned to the lab or to a specially designed wind tunnel — not even a closed racetrack. They’ve instead taken in feedback from actual working farmers, listening to the demands of our terrain and our hard-as-nails rural conditions. They’ve been told — loudly — that a machine fit for parks

maintenance or a hunting jaunt along a tidy trail is likely to take a hammering when subjected to the knocks, bumps, hard labour and muddy winters which are sure to be thrown at any serious farming tool. What has come out of this process is new from the ground up.

Polaris began by strengthening the chassis and suspension components with thick, heavy duty steel for endurance, and easy-access grease fittings for quick maintenance. From the winning formula of the Polaris Ute super-ATV they have brought in four-wheel descent control, a safe and sure-footed way to tackle steep and slippery terrain. Ground clearance is higher,

suspension travel longer, engine power up by 10 per cent, and power steering is now standard.

The core of the Ranger’s new incarnation is a powerful 567cc engine producing 44 horsepower, all fed to the ground through a clever four-wheel drive system and those grippy, knobbly tyres. And, although it will soon be covered in proper Kiwi mud, it’s not a bad looking beast either, in fire-engine red trim. Polaris burst onto the scene with their

original Ranger, carving out a niche as a versatile working man’s UTV and winning fans with no-nonsense performance on the farm.

This new iteration of the Ranger stays true to the old rule, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any indications. But it does improve on what is already a popular package, and its ‘heavy duty’ rural focus is sure to be welcomed by those who now see the UTV as a farming necessity.

A better farm outlook emergesThe economic outlook this year for New Zealand farming is largely fine, but with just a few clouds on the horizon.

Many regions like Northland have enjoyed good rainfall through December and generally there has been substantial grass growth throughout the region. The beef boom is providing a huge economic bonus.

Despite the lowest milk payout forecast in six years, many dairy farmers have been able to capitalise on the current high beef prices by selling cull cows early, and beef stock that has been raised on runoffs. The current trade conflict between Russia and America is quite interesting to follow. The American alliance keep telling us that their trade embargo against Russia is causing the Russian economy to decline.

But a recent article in the New Zealand Herald says that the Russians are looking forward to the 2015 year, despite the country’s economic and political difficulties The Russian president is enjoying up to 87% support according to a recent poll. It may take some time for the two world economic superpowers to reconcile their differences.

Meanwhile, New Zealand farmers will face some challenging issues this year which will have an impact on their private property rights, and the way they conduct their farming business.

The government’s new legislation regarding water rights and the threat of agency bureaucrats using their power of right of entry onto farmers’ private property are just two of the issues of concern.

The recent action taken by WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors against a Marlborough farming couple, which resulted in them being fined $40,000 altogether between them in the

Blenheim District Court for not wearing helmets while riding their quad bikes on their farm, raises some very serious issues in regard to the right of entry by government agencies onto a farmer’s property. Surveillance cameras were used in an ‘out to get them’ approach and that is abhorrent to right thinking people. When one looks at court fines that have been awarded in other cases, the award of $40,000 is extremely excessive and is out of kilter with how the rest of New Zealand society is treated.

It is ironic that there is now a call by some cyclists for the law regarding the wearing of cycle helmets to be reviewed, and it seems that if you have a sympathetic doctor a cyclist can obtain an exemption certificate which does not require a helmet on the road. Farmers of New Zealand is of the view that the current policy of forcing farmers to wear helmets when driving quad bikes on their private farm properties is unworkable for many reasons.

Farmers of New Zealand does support the wearing of helmets for road

use. But many of the helmets that are on the market today do not guarantee full protection.

It is our understanding that the majority of deaths on farms due to farm bike accidents are caused through injury to the body. According to reports by the Department of Labour the most common accident causing serious injury or death was a slow speed sideways roll on the side of a hill. There are thousands of bikes ridden on farms and by the urban community.

We believe that farm bike manufacturers, farmers and Government agencies need to come to a common position on how to safeguard riders of farm ATV bikes as a result of bike rollover, and get the law changed accordingly. While Farmers of New

Zealand concedes that a four-post rollover frame is not the most practical way of dealing with this important issue, we strongly support the work that has been done by a Dargaville company in all-terrain vehicle rollover protection.

This is a flexible roll-over lifeguard protector. The manufacturing company claims their design has passed all required tests and the concept is a world first in ATV safety, providing good rider crush protection.

Farming innovations for future growth by Andy Bryenton

As we enter into the fifteenth year of the new millennium, some people may feel disappointed that we do not yet commute to work by flying car, or have our homes cleaned and tidied by robotic servants.

The future is here, they say — well past the year 2000 when such wonders were promised.

But technological miracles are out there, performing tasks we have very quickly taken for granted. No more so than in the vital field of agriculture, where technology has enabled the adoption of more intensive farming practices, enabling the feeding of a massive global population. Indeed, our current standard of living is firmly based in our ability to produce reliable crops each year.

Karl Benz’s venerable diesel engine has been revitalised out of all recognition for the new century. Over 100 years old before the advent of advanced computerised injection

technology, the diesel we now use to power tractors, utes, diggers and even some UTVs on the farm comes equipped with a common rail turbo setup, and after-market chips exist to squeeze even more power and economy from engines already light-years ahead of the rumbling old mills of yesteryear.

Advances in navigation and tracking help put that power to better use, as a network of satellites in low orbit grid the world for GPS. Once the preserve of the military, this system now lets contractors precisely place fertiliser and nutrients, or lets them pneumatically fire seeds deep into the soil in just the right place, mapping the whole endeavour from space. Science has unlocked the secrets of the soil as well, allowing for

a laboratory analysis of every paddock and pasture. Farmers can now tailor a fert application for each individual part of their property, specific to the lay of the land, the underlying strata of soil, and the kind of crop required.

More lush grass means more milk from our dairy herds, which can be processed and shipped anywhere in the world.

Chemical science has even discovered better ways to protect machines in the field from rust and damage. A range of spray-on solutions exist, some based on naturally occurring substances, and we live in an age of

spray-on rubber paint, plug-and-play communications, onboard tablet-driven logging and computerised management of farm assets such as water, feed silos and even livestock themselves.

Technology proceeds as quickly as ever in rural New Zealand — in fact, a lot of the research which drives tech change on farms worldwide is being undertaken right here.

While it may take a little longer for your robotic butler to arrive, it’s good to know in the meantime that the serious business of feeding the nation is receiving the full attention of some very innovative minds indeed.

Fun start to 2015 by Andy Bryenton

With New Year’s eve now a receding memory, it’s time to pull out the stops and plan some party action that doesn’t depend on the date.

Summertime is the perfect excuse to get out there and taste what the Kaipara has to offer. It’s with great delight that we can report the return of Maungaturoto Hotel’s manager Kyle Underwood’s creative and entertaining themed party nights, kicking off with an

homage to that 90s icon, Will Smith as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Those who say they don’t remember the show which catapulted the talented African-american actor to stardom are likely just embarrassed that they still know every word to the theme tune. Guests are encouraged to wear full 1990s hip hop attire, or the trademark sweater-vest of Will’s nerdy sidekick Carlton. Tunes will be provided by local

band Fat32, who must have been brushing up on the funky title track, as there’s a contest to see who can recite the lyrics in the best old-school rap fashion. Tourist diners in for a treat

The other big news from around the district this month is all about mouthwatering menus and scenic venues. Visitors to our sunny slice of paradise can enjoy delicious home-cooked Texan fare at the Aratapu Tavern, with live music on Fridays. The Paparoa Hotel’s kitchen will be running hot as the village in the valley serves as a gateway to the angler’s paradise of the upper Kaipara. Dargaville’s fine collection of eateries are also in top gear, with top tips for seasonal treats on website Tripadvisor sending tourists our way. Record crowds

You’ll need — seafood — any mix will do of shelled prawn tails, scallops, mussels, white fish, crab, shrimps or calamari. Two limes. Two cans of coconut cream. Ricotta filled ravioli or tortellini (this can be bought pre made for ease of cooking). Cream cheese, a little fresh coriander, a red onion, butter and some crushed garlic to taste.

Pan fry the seafood in garlic butter just until it is cooked through. At the same time, boil your pasta until al dente. Add coconut cream to the seafood pan and reduce the heat as low as you can, stirring and folding the coconut cream through the seafood mix. Add a small amount of fresh coriander, a very finely chopped red onion, and a little more garlic along with a generous pinch of pepper. Allow to simmer, stirring

Coconut Cream and Lime Zest Seafood Pasta

have been reported by specialists across all manner of delights, from good old fish and chips to authentic Thai, Asian and Indian cuisine. Our best advice this week — fire up the bbq with some fresh seafood right off the hook. Lashings of garlic butter make it all the better!

throughout, just until the coconut cream is warm. Thicken as necessary with cream cheese or sour cream for a rich, decadent flavour. Not much is needed, but depending on your seafood choice the sauce may need to be made a little more robust.

Finally, grate the zest from two small green limes into the mix, squeeze the limes themselves into the pan (omitting the pips!) and stir a final time before layering the rich sauce and seafood over the ricotta filled pasta. Serve with a chilled white wine of your choice.

Try this seasonal treat with lashings of fresh fish, mussels, scallops and prawns.

Clever quilters get creative by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Quilters is a club for like-minded ladies who enjoy the creative, engaging and skilled craft of quilting.

The art of creating intricate, artistic works with needle and thread has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, driven especially by the advent of modern, high-tech sewing machines with advanced quilting functions. Some are now so thoroughly modern that they integrate directly with tablets and laptops via wi-fi in order to bring any design you can imagine into reality.

The club meet on the third Tuesday of each month to share and learn quilting and patchwork projects, to have fun and help the local community.

The group are pleased to have a number of community projects in process at any one time. Over the past year they have run projects for the local hospital, the Plunket Society, Women’s

Refuge and the Cancer Society. The Dargaville quilters also hold a bi-annual exhibition of their work and from the proceeds have donated to the Fire Service, Hospice Kaipara and the Rescue Helicopter amongst others.

This year they are hosting two workshops to promote the craft and engage new members with the fun and fellowship of quilting in the Kaipara. The first is set to take place in February, with nationally recognised tutors coming to town to teach members — and other interested Kaipara ladies — contemporary patchwork and quilting procedures. It’s a great way to get involved with this vibrant and multi-talented group, doing their bit for the community while having a good time.

Hot chrome sizzles this summer by Andy Bryenton

The twenty-first birthday of any event is a huge chance to party — and when that event is already steeped in rock ‘n’ roll, petrol and chrome, then it’s sure to be a real barn-burner of a shindig.

That’s why this year’s 21st annual Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival is bound to be a full house. Not only will there be field after field filled with creations which would bring a fond tear to Ed Roth’s eye, there will also be a fitting soundtrack, great food, and lots to see and do, even for those who don’t know a stick shift from a supercharger.

Each year the level of artistry and presentation which goes into the show gets that little bit better. The custom car is regarded as the only truly American art form other than jazz music, rock ‘n’ roll and the mighty hamburger, and these beauties are turned out in candy-flake paint, airbrushed and pinstriped flames, acres of chrome and wire-spoked whitewalls.

Those with a classic in the shed are invited to take a look at the huge

range of hard to find parts on display on site, and hot rod, custom, classic and even model car and drag racing clubs have all put together displays to send petrolheads on a ride to heaven. Stop by on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th January for a sizzling hot slice of automotive action.

Ever dreamt of being able to pump your stock water over long distances, and/or up steep hills, using just an existing single-phase power source?

Dream no more. Mono™, New Zealand’s most experienced and trusted name in heavy duty agricultural pumps, will soon release a 3-phase pump set that can operate from a standard 3 pin plug 230 volt AC power supply.

Imagine - 1000 gallons/hour, up to 240m head (340psi) without any costly power upgrade, and being a genuine Mono™ it will most likely still be around for the grandchildren.

A timely solution to an age old problem especially in light of increased regional council focus on environmental and sustainability issues.

Look out for our Mono™ Longhaul Pumping System - available early 2015!
