A group of enthusiasts staged mock battles that drew large crowds. “The re-enactors are an amazing bunch of people,” says Mrs Botica. “They come from all over the country and go all over New Zealand. They do it all for free. They’re absolutely fabulous.” Bettie Marchant, from Hakaru RSA’s women’s section, achieved the honour of starting off one battle with a rifle shot, while members of the cadet union were also invited to take part in the re-enactments. Mrs Botica says Hakaru RSA plans to organise another event next year to mark the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli, which “will be even bigger and better than this year’s. She says further events are likely to follow at three-year intervals, as the amount of organisation required makes it too difficult to hold them annually.

Re-enactment remembers by Colin Patterson

There’s no better way to understand the hardships faced by soldiers at war than to walk a mile in their boots. That’s exactly what happened at the Hakaru RSA’s re-enactment of a real battlefield, as the guns sounded and troopers marched to remember the sacrifice of a past generation.

The organiser of ‘Days of Thunder’, Sheryl Botica, said more than 300 adults came on the first day and 250 on Sunday, a turnout she was pleased with. “It went very well. It’s the first time we’ve put on an event like this. We’ve learned an awful lot.”

While based on the First World War, the event also included displays of equipment and weapons from other conflicts, including the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam wars. A collection of

vintage cars also highlighted the part that vehicles played in wartime.

A group of enthusiasts staged mock battles that drew large crowds. “The re-enactors are an amazing bunch of people,” says Mrs Botica. “They come from all over the country and go all over New Zealand. They do it all for free. They’re absolutely fabulous.”

Bettie Marchant, from Hakaru RSA’s women’s section, achieved the honour of starting off one battle with a rifle

shot, while members of the cadet union were also invited to take part in the re-enactments.

Snorkelling at Goat Island

Kindy kids love sand

The open road

Otamatea High School’s Level 2 Physical Education class had the opportunity to snorkel in the pristine waters around Goat Island recently — but it wasn’t all fun and games. The adventure was part of an internal assessment and students were required to write a report about the risks involved in snorkelling and how they can be prevented by using risk management strategies. The day of the trip provided ideal conditions for snorkelling and the class saw an eagle ray, a family of crayfish and various fish species, including snapper and blue maomao.

Children at Ruawai Kindergarten have every reason to be pleased after a working bee of parents built wooden edging around their sandpit. Head teacher Teresa Robertson says the parents spent six hours over Anzac weekend building the edging under the supervision of builder Cole Ringrose. Head teacher Teresa Robertson says the kindergarten’s 30 children can play in the sandpit without risking the sand going everywhere, making ground maintenance much easier.

To drive at a spanking trot with no engine noises — just the jingle of harness and the wind in your face is great fun.” Matakohe’s Janet Poole has a four-wheeler buggy for her miniature horses which can be harnessed in a team of two, four or more. “At present it is on loan to a friend who has been driving different combinations of his little horses,” she says.

Appearing in amateur dramatics for the Otamatea Repertory Theatre as a teenager in Maungaturoto proved to be a springboard into international show business for Hayden Tee, who has now landed the role of Inspector Javert in a Melbourne production of Les Miserables.“Hayden appeared in lots of productions at Otamatea Repertory Theatre and

while he was at school in Auckland, and he was coached in singing by Joan Kennaway of Opera North” said his mother, Debbie Brooks, from the Brooks Motors office in Maungaturoto. The family is pleased that Les Mis is being staged just across the Tasman.

Liquor application opposedAn application for a licence to operate a retail liquor outlet in Paparoa has attracted strong opposition in the town and surrounding district, with a petition against the application attracting over 500 signatures at the time of writing.

The petition and accompanying submissions are now before the District Licensing Committee. The applicant seeks approval to operate the liquor store seven days a week from 9am to 10pm, and notification was advertised by the Kaipara District Council.

However, local community groups in Paparoa organised the petition which has circulated through businesses both in Paparoa and Maungaturoto, which already has a liquor store.

“Maungaturoto is only ten minutes from Paparoa anyway,” said one petition signer spoken to by the Kaipara Lifestyler. “Here in town

we have the hotel, with its new management, as well as the Paparoa Store with wine and beer sales, as well as the licensed restaurant, the Cruiser Cafe. Why do we need another liquor outlet, especially when its opposite the children’s playground?

Other signers spoken to added that communities in Auckland have already “been up in arms” over the number of shops selling alcohol.

“We need to get the message out there. Like Police Area commander Tracey Phillips told a public meeting in Paparoa last year, alcohol is the biggest problem facing the police.”

Paparoa service station’s John Eddy examines the petition circulated through businesses in Paparoa and Maungaturoto

Kaiwaka firefighters face Sky Tower challenge by Colin Patterson

It sounds like madness, but 700 firefighters will soon race up the 1,103 steps of Auckland’s Sky Tower in full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus.

Three of this year’s intrepid participants in the Sky Tower challenge to be held on May 17 are members of the Kaiwaka Volunteer Brigade.

Tim Brown, Mickey Renton and Mike Law will bust their guts on May 17 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. The 2013 event raised $700,000 and organisers are hoping for more than $1 million this time.

Mr Law says the Kaiwaka trio took part last year, so know what to expect. “It was pretty exhausting.”

They decided to enter after Mr Law’s three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer.

He and his colleagues have not undertaken any special training. Mr Law, a retired forestry worker says he keeps pretty fit, as does Mr Brown who works in IT. “Mickey’s a roofer, so he’s up and down ladders all day.”

The threesome say they have been too busy to do much about sponsorship. But they took part in Shave for a Cure. “We cut people’s hair in full firefighting kit. Then we took it off and had ours cut. We managed to raise $6,000 for child cancer.”

Each of the three finished last year’s climb in around 23 minutes and Mr Law

Kaiwaka’s intrepid threesome (from left) Mike Law, Mickey Renton and Tim Brown pictured after completing the 2013 Sky Tower Challenge

is confident they can do as well this year. But he hopes for a quieter preparation than in 2013.

“Last year the alarm went off the evening before. We spent several hours fighting a fire.”

Door is opento family assistance by Joanne Speechly

Strengthening Families began operating in the Kaipara in 2007 and in that time, coordinator Bethne Smith has helped hundreds of families to reach their potential.

Bethne works with families who are already connected to other agencies and says her role is to get everybody on the same page.

“I’m the in-between person. I find out what the agencies need, what the family needs and I coordinate that process. The reason it is working so well in the Kaipara, is because our social service agencies are committed to working together and achieving results.

“Ninety nine per cent of the families I see have a passion to do better for their children and that is why they come my way — they need help.”

Strengthening Families is run in a way that meets the unique needs of each family and the aim is to offer help before a family reaches crisis point. The service was first trialled in New Zealand in the 1990s and since 1996, more than 37,000 children and young people have been involved in Strengthening Families cases.

“I get to meet the everyday heroes,” adds Bethne. “Grandparents who have raised their own children and have now

opened their homes to grandchildren, who may come with their own issues.

“I also see parents fighting to get the best for their children and I see kids grasping whatever they can to make their life better and just running with it, so I’m really, really lucky.”

Strengthening Families is based at KAPs family service centre, 2 Station Road, Dargaville or phone Bethne on 09 439 7336, email [email protected].

Support worker reckons she’s privileged by Joanne Speechly

Otamatea Community Services has welcomed new family support worker Lianne Wilson to their team.

Lianne, who previously worked in the sector for five years in rehabilitation, live-in-care and supported housing, says she feels “privileged to be able to visit homes and spend time with people.”

“Liane called in to see us at Community House in Maungaturoto, introduced herself and asked about our services,” says administrator, Elizabeth Ludlam.

“She was interested to learn of the counselling and parent coach work but the role that really gripped her attention was that of Family Support.

When a vacancy occurred fairly soon after her visit, Lianne was back to ask more questions.”

It was a clear match and since beginning with OCS in March, Lianne has completed Child Protection training, a rigorous 10 day budgeting programme and she has recently completed a three month part-time literacy and numeracy course.

Lianne hopes that she can journey with the client families until they reach their potential, thus turning setbacks into comebacks.

The countdown is on as the completion of Whangarei’s ultra-fast broadband fibre network nears.

When the end of May rolls around, tens of thousands of Whangarei residents and businesses will be able to connect to New Zealand’s fastest broadband.

This is your very own fibre network – Northpower Fibre’s ultra-fast broadband - which is just a matter of weeks away from being completed.

It has taken just three years for Northpower to build New Zealand’s first ultra-fast broadband network and it couldn’t have been done without the immense support from local people and local authorities.

It is something Whangarei can be immensely proud of and we should get ready to celebrate!

Connecting is easy

All you have to do to get connected, is check out the build map (click on the Coverage tab) on the Northpower Fibre website to see if fibre is at your door, go to the Partners page and choose a broadband provider.

Any questions phone Northpower Fibre on 0800 667 847 or follow Northpower Fibre on facebook - facebook.com/northpowerfibre.

Northpower is giving away five iPads to five lucky winners, along with a handful of ultra-fast broadband connections to the Northpower Fibre network.

Simply go to facebook.com/northpowerfibre and nominate the person or business who could do great things with fibre, and tell us just what they could use a UFB fibre connection for – you could receive an iPad for your efforts and they will receive a year’s free broadband connection. Winners will be announced on May 8, 2014.

Whangarei’s ultra-fast broadband network can save you time and money which is great for local businesses and home-owners.

In fact, having fibre at home means everyone can be on-line at once. That’s great for gaming, study and working from home.

ICT Hub

From 30 April until 9 May there will be an ICT hub operating in the old café at Forum North.

Come and see for yourself what UFB can do, try out TV online, test smart payroll applications, take part in a virtual health clinic or play games running ultra-fast.

We’re celebrating because Whangarei is first with New Zealand’s fastest broadband!

Grateful netball club still needs assistance by Joanne Speechly

Otamatea Netball Club has received a much needed boost after losing eight teams’ worth of equipment to a fire four months ago.

The club applied to ANZ Courtside for a custom grant and were successful, receiving a set of uniforms, netballs and pump and a gear bag. The club was also delighted to receive two unexpected donations from Barfoot and Thompson and Maungaturoto Opportunity Shop.

“My daughter, Stevie-Raye, was chosen to be a ball carrier for the Mystics at their game against the Tactics in Auckland for her sixth birthday and Mystics sponsor Barfoot and Thompson called our family on to the court and presented us with a $2,000 cheque for the club,” said president of Otamatea Netball Club, Tina Ball, whose house was destroyed in the fire. “It was totally unexpected and pretty awesome!

“However, even with the grant and the donations we’ve received, we’re still a few thousand dollars short to get uniforms for all our teams. At the moment, we have borrowed some skirts and the players are playing in their own tops but we are going to run into an issue when the juniors start on May 10.”

Waterrestrictionslifted

Recent heavy rains have led to the Kaipara District Council lifting water restrictions that were applied in the Dargaville and Baylys Beach areas.

The restrictions were implemented in February and were designed to safeguard supplies through the second dry summer in a row.

The restrictions prohibited the use of hoses and sprinklers to water gardens and wash cars.

Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware says the restrictions were removed effective from midnight on Friday May 2. The ban on outdoor fires that has been in place since mid-summer was lifted two weeks ago.

Uniforms alone are expected to cost $8,000 and although the club is grateful for everything they have received, they still need 8 matching uniforms to play in the Netball Rodney Competition. They are now concentrating on further fundraising initiatives. If people wish to assist in any way, they can contact Tina on 09 431 6878.

THE

TWO SPLIT ENDSTop tips, advice & cutting edge news from the world of HAIRDRESSING. Brought to you by SEAN & TOM

Hair care fact and fictionThere are so many myths about hair care, it’s sometimes hard to sort out the fairytales from the facts! Sleep on a silk pillow; brush your hair 100 times before bed; don’t wash it daily; never blow-dry without conditioning. When it comes to keeping your hair in good nick, it’s difficult to know which advice to follow and which to ignore. It’s time to separate fact from folklore.

Will brushing your hair 100 times a night really leave it silky smooth?Sean Burnett Head Stylist at The Salon Kaiwaka, says there is science behind this claim. Brushing helps sebum or nutrients from the scalp spread along the hair shaft, coating and, crucially, conditioning the hair. Sean recommends that his clients - except those with very curly hair - brush well every day, using a soft cushioned brush or Tangle Teezer. Work from end to root, to avoid breaking any hair which might be knotted.

Does diet make a difference to the quality of your hair?Eat well, sleep well and think well. “I believe that general health is mirrored in the condition of your hair”, says Tom. “It follows that a well balanced diet of natural ingredients, such as vegetables, fresh fruit and oily fish, is not only essential for your body and mind, but will also be good for your hair”. In other words, to look great and feel great, take care of yourself! When it comes to sorting out the gems of truth from the masses of misinformation, experience really counts. Talk to your personal stylist and you’ll be surprised at just what will work to help you get - and keep - the look you desire. After all, that’s what we’re there for!

Carvings markcommunity gardens

Te Kopuru residents and staff from the Community Probation Service came together last week to unveil carvings and celebrate the official opening of Te Kopuru’s community garden. It was established as an initiative of local residents led by Clara Hutchinson. Most seeds were donated while offenders on community probation

supplied much of the labour. The offenders also restored two carvings that were rescued from a local drain, under the watchful eye of kaumatua and master carver Jim Te Tuhi.

Among the plants growing in the garden are rhubarb, lettuces, potatoes, strawberries, beans, silver beet and passion fruit.

Views heard on Annual Plan by Colin Patterson

Kaipara District commissioners heard public submissions on the council’s draft Annual Plan for 2014/15 last week as public hearings took place in Maungaturoto, Dargaville and Mangawhai.

Among the submitters, Pene McKenzie from the Dargaville Museum urged commissioners to reconsider the classification of the Lighthouse Function Centre as a commercial facility. Its current classification meant it was unable to apply for funding for essential maintenance, such as replacing the lino in the kitchen.

Kelvin Windsor representing Ratepayers of Te Kopuru urged commissioners to cancel a planned 6% rates hike in the town to fund urgent maintenance on its sewerage scheme. He said the rates rise would create a huge burden on the town’s low-income families, while residents had already paid for their sewerage scheme through

a targeted rate since it was builtin 1980. Local resident Graham Jones said the Kauri Coast Community Pool was a white elephant costing the council $250,000 a year, even though its original business case said it would operate at no cost to ratepayers.

He also criticised the council for resealing Hokianga Rd three times in two years, and for building a water storage dam for Dargaville but then being unwilling to spend $2 million on a pipeline to pipe the water to the town.

The three commissioners meet again on May 27. The Annual Plan is then scheduled to be formally adopted before the start of the next financial year on July 1.

Commissioners John Robertson, Peter Winder and Richard Booth listen to submissions in Dargaville

Chair of Commissioners

When appointed to govern the Kaipara District Council in September 2012, the Commissioners were provided with a set of tasks, laid out in a Gazette Notice issued by the Minister of Local Government. Every three months the Commissioners report to the Minister on their progress towards meeting the tasks. The last task set for the Commissioners is set down for the period July to October 2015. It is described as follows. The Commissioners will develop an exit plan to facilitate a smooth transition back to an elected Council. This may include:• Recommendations for any Government assistance required (eg special legislation)• Recommendations to use the Ministerial intervention and assistance provisions proposed as part of the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill 2012 to assist the newly elected Council if appropriate; and• A plan for the induction of the new mayor and councillors to be elected in 2015. An elected Council is destined to replace the Commissioners in October 2015. Many of the tasks required to be accomplished by the Commissioners have been accomplished, some remain work in progress, and some like the last task described above have yet to be undertaken. Commissioners will put in place a plan for the induction of elected members. As members of the Kaipara community however, we should also be putting our minds towards the elections. Kaipara needs candidates who will stand for election, and who will bring the skills, community interest, and passion to Council that will form a great governance team for our district. As Commissioners, our promise to successfully elected candidates is to leave you with a Council that is in good shape – one that is financially sustainable, that is engaged with the many communities that make up Kaipara, and that is organisationally competent. We will leave you with a reliable Long Term Plan, with asset management plans that

are robust, and with a series of community action plans that have been embraced by residents.

If you are interested in finding out about how Council works, or if you wish to discuss the demands of being an elected member, you might:

• Ask a previously elected member for advice.

• Attend a Council meeting or two.

• Ask to meet with a Commissioner.

The Kaipara District Council is a complex organisation, carrying out many activities – running libraries, managing networks like roads, providing parks and supporting community activities. For elected members this makes being part of the governance team interesting and challenging.

The Kaipara District Council is also an important public organisation for our District. It provides services that we cannot provide alone. It keeps our roads open, our wastewater systems operating, and it is there if there is a civil defence emergency.

As an elected member, you are there to guide the operation of Council – to set policies and ensure that they are abided by; to develop plans and approve contracts, and monitor their application; to work with members of the community and community groups, supporting their initiatives. The Council’s Chief Executive will report to your Council, and with the support of Council staff, will manage its operations.

Kaipara is a district made up of many communities. As an elected member you will represent the whole district, and you will be amazed and impressed by the level of engagement for the public good that exists.

Think about this. When the Commissioners end their time as the Council’s governors, Kaipara needs to replace them with a Mayor and Council that can take our District forward.

Are you a possible candidate, or do you know someone who should consider standing?

A gesture of community spirit

As we are every year, we here at the Kaipara Lifestyler have been proud to feature pages of red poppies representing our business community this ANZAC Day. As in years before, we have also been pleased to offer a donation to the RSA from this special edition of our newspaper. RSA President John McLean expressed his deepest gratitude in receiving this token of our support — both as a local business ourselves and as the representative of those business leaders who so vividly made their respect and remembrance clear on the 25th. He’s seen here accepting the cheque from Andy Bryenton and Kylie McMullen. Thanks to one and all who took part!

Virtual highway moves from the drawing board by Colin Patterson

The region’s economic development agency is seeking help from Kaipara District Council to bring the Twin Coast Discovery Highway into the digital age.

The initiative from Northland Inc was outlined by its chief executive David Wilson when he gave his organisation’s submission to Kaipara District Council’s draft Annual Plan last week.

Mr Wilson says the proposal started when the New Zealand Transport Agency decided it would revitalise the signage on the route. It starts in Auckland, heads north to the Brynderwyns and then turns left at the intersection with State Highway 12.

Mr Wilson says the Twin Coast Discovery Highway was New Zealand’s first touring route. “The aim is to bring it into the 21st century.”

While changing and updating signage is relatively straightforward, Mr Wilson wants to transform the route via a new app, that supplements information currently found on Google Maps or GPS. “When you drive into Dargaville the app can tell you what attractions are open and what accommodation is available.”

It could also provide visitors with interpretative material on local attractions and sites. “We want more visitors. But we also want them to stay for longer. If you get them to slow down, you win.”

Mr Wilson wants the app running within the next 12 months. But he agrees it is also important that hospitality providers

and operators come on board to make the platform truly interactive.

“Auckland is one of the biggest markets for Northland, with a population of 1.5 million. A lot of them come north. Northland is their preferred holiday destination.”

Although Kaipara District Council’s financial problems mean it has not contributed financially to Northland Inc in recent years, Mr Wilson says he looks forward to its input into the Twin Coast Discovery Highway initiative.

But money from the council is not essential. “We’ll go ahead whether or not council contributes.”

Northland Inc CEO David Wilson

Music month off to funky start by Andy Bryenton

May means one big thing for the world of music — the start of another rocking good New Zealand Music Month.

We’ve got a lot to be proud of as a musical nation, with artists like Lorde ruling the international airwaves. But at the grassroots level there’s even more innovation, talent and fun happening, and it’s ready to burst out this Friday at famed west coast venue theFunky Fish.

The acclaimed restaurant has garnered quite a reputation for quirky and eclectic acts, and this show, featuring the talented Olly Knox, breakout electronic artist Hide and Tallow, and indie rock two-piece Wicked Games will be a showcase of styles and genres all mashed into a sonic smorgasbord.

We’re told that Olly Knox will be putting down the acoustic guitar and tuning up the electric for this set as well, which spearheads a new artistic direction and heralds a new lineup.

This is only the first of what promises to be a whirlwind dance-card of local gigs, celebrating our rich musical history

New flags for Dargaville Dargaville’s Victoria St — the

town’s main shopping street — now has a new set of flags, as staff from Newman Engineering removed the former Field Days banners and replaced them with banners promoting Dargaville Museum and the Citizens Advice Bureau. The flags are an initiative of the Dargaville Business Forum. Newman Engineering co-owner Margaret Bishop says the changeover of the flags was delayed because the material used in the replacement flags had stretched and needed to be repaired before being reused.

in the Kaipara. From jazz to blues, country to heavy metal and hip hop, we have a lot to be proud of, so get out there during NZ Music Month and show your support!

The recent award of $535,000 plus costs to Joe Karam in a defamation case against two men who launched an all-out attack on him because of support of David Bain, certainly sends a clear signal to all commentators in the public arena that New Zealand defamation laws require commentators to be very careful when they circulate opinions regarding individuals, that could lower and damage the reputation of that person in the eyes of right-minded thinking people.

I took an interest in Joe Karam’s defamation proceedings. Like Joe Karam some years ago I successfully issued defamation proceedings as a result of statements that were made against me at a public dairy company meeting in my home town of Dargaville.

In those days the local dairy company meetings were very well attended and sometimes very boisterous. There was certainly the local newspaper there which was well read. The local dairy

company chairman had stated publicly that I was party to causing the dairy company to lose a 10,000 ton coal order from States Mines. His public statements were found to be untrue and hurtful.

Today on the internet we see emails being circulated and statements being made on social media such as Facebook that clearly are in breach of New Zealand defamation laws.

It is good to see the government now introducing legislation regarding the internet whereby people will be held to account for malicious and threatening statements that are made against individuals.

There are numerous examples where young people have been bullied and death threats have been made and also the inciting of individuals to commit suicide.

While the majority of people realise that there is absolute privilege in relation

an issue to a council, refers publicly to councillors as lacking integrity or acting dishonestly without naming them individually, legal actions can still be taken by councillors to protect their reputations.

Justice Patricia Courtney found that 50 statements made against Joe Karam were defamatory and without defence. Few aspects of Mr Karam’s reputation were left untouched. The defamatory statements were made on Facebook and the Counterspin website.

In a democracy, freedom of speech requires that public statements should be true and opinions honest.

Be my Guestto Parliamentary proceedings and also in relation to judicial proceedings where individuals cannot issue slander or defamation proceedings, in every other public arena one must be extremely careful when it comes to making personal statements against an individual in public.

Joe Karam’s case and other recent libel lawsuit awards where damages in excess of $800,000 plus costs have been awarded to the plaintiff, demonstrates that if one makes a statement that is actuated by malice and is designed to ridicule the individual, it can be very costly.

We all have the right to speak out and question but we must remember our electronic communication to one another today is in the public domain. Everything is discoverable and largely we lack the control as to where it ends up, sometimes throughout the world.

Many people believe that everything is fair game and make the mistake that you can say what you like and get away with it. It is amazing to see on the internet for example, cases where people make derogatory remarks about their local government councillors, thinking that they are entitled to do so.

Some make the mistake of thinking that if you don’t name the person it is not defamatory. However, if a person’s reputation has been clearly impugned as a result of the statement and that personloses standing within the community, the law allows redress. For example, if a person who is advocating

There is an old saying that when something leaves your mouth, it is no longer yours. True democracy provides the privilege of freedom of speech, but with it comes responsibility. In the modern world falsehood can spread its way around the world before truth has a chance to put its boots on.

Farming exchange relived in Dargaville by Colin Patterson

In the late 1960s a group of kiwi young farmers jetted off to the other side of the world to find out how their counterparts operated.

Nearly half a century later, older and perhaps wiser, they came to Dargaville over the weekend to remember the agricultural exchange that changed many of their lives. One of them was Dargaville resident John Bishop. In the late 1960s he was farming at Pouto and heard about the exchange through his local Young Farmers Club.So he applied.

“Pretty well anyone who applied got in. It was a working exchange — it’s still going today. Seventy-two of us went.”

In fact, there were so many young kiwis they had to charter a plane to take them all to the USA and Canada, where they spent six months, before heading for Europe.

Mr Bishop found himself on a grain farm in the Canadian province of Alberta. “It was flat as far as you could see. Everything was much bigger than in New Zealand. The tractors were 250 horsepower. In New Zealand they were around 70.”

Mr Bishop was the only worker on the farm, apart from the owner. But a few of his fellow New Zealanders worked at neighbouring farms and were able to

get together at weekends. Before they started they also had a two-week bus trip to the USA.

In Europe, Mr Bishop went to Denmark where he worked on a dairy and pig farm. Being Europe, all animals were kept indoors. “The cows were 100% indoors. There was zero grazing. There was nothing to compare it with.”

Mr Bishop says he was the second-youngest of the kiwis on the exchange. A number have passed on and some are getting elderly. So he and wife Margaret got to work organising a reunion at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club.

“We didn’t know how many would make a 50th reunion. So we decided to organise a 47th.”

Back together after 44 years the young farmers enjoyed a weekend in Dargaville

Good old fashioned fun by Joanne Speechly

The top of the North Island region of Rural Women New Zealand is hosting a Family Fun Picnic Day to celebrate the UN International Year of Family Farming on Sunday, May 25.

“Considering the drought that many Northland farming families have faced this season, our region has chosen to hold fun day off the farm to support this event,” says president of the RWNZ’s Aoroa branch, Kath Gillespie.

“The programme offers something for everyone and most importantly, some light relief. Any profits from the day will go to the Northland Rural Support Trust, which will then filter back to farming families who need some extra assistance.”

Held at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, the day will be reminiscent of a traditional family day out, with old fashioned races and competitions for children and adults. Outdoor activities will include an egg and spoon, sack and three legged races, gumboot throwing, horseshoe quoits, an obstacle course relay, marbles, hopscotch and knucklebones.

Miniature horse and cart rides and tractor and trailer rides will keep the children entertained and there will be vintage and static machinery displays, DVDs of historical interest and stalls with lots of interactive fun. Competitions

include best date scones, photography and colouring in.

“We’re asking people to bring along their best date scones to be judged and we will have photo competition for children and adults. The categories are funniest, historical, family, landscape, creative and animals, so we encourage people to bring along their 6x4 inch prints.”

Families can bring a picnic to share and there will be BBQ food, billy tea and damper, tea, coffee and sandwiches available. All sales will be cash only.

The Family Fun Picnic Day opens at 9-30am at Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, adjacent to Dargaville Museum, Mt Wesley Coast Rd, Dargaville. $5 per adult, $10 per family.

Entries for all competitions need to be in by 10am on the day. For further information or colouring in competition forms, contact Kath Gillespie on 09 439 7610 or [email protected], Fiona Gower on 09 232 9711 or [email protected] or visit www.ruralwomen.org.nz or the RWNZ facebook page.

Farming leader hopes for unity by Colin Patterson

New Kaipara Federated Farmers president John Blackwell hopes that the area’s two farmers’ organisations can combine to form one voice.

Mr Blackwell, a beef farmer was elected to the position at the recent annual general meeting of the Kaipara section of Federated Farmers.

There are two farmers’ organisations in Northland, with Farmers of New Zealand being formed after the Northland Division of Federated Farmers declined to affiliate with its national body.

“Farmers are only 2.5% of the population, so there are only a few of us. I’d like us to speak with one voice.”

Mr Blackwell says Kaipara farmers have gone through tough times with droughts over the last two summers. But the availability of supplementary feed such as palm kernels has helped dairy farmers get through it. But that option is not generally available to sheep and beef farmers who have responded by destocking. But stable international meat prices have continued,

New Kaipara Federated Farmers president John Blackwell

ensuring confidence remains high among producers.

However, he says farmers are well aware of the need to plan ahead, as climatic changes are likely to continue to pose challenges.

The first few years of the 21st century have seen an increase in

corporate farming, as companies take advantage of mechanisation to buy up farms and combine them into larger units. “We can’t stop progress,” says Mr Blackwell. “But bigger is not always better. Having fewer farming families has a big impact on our communities, especially primary schools.”

Strong win at home for Northern WairoaSaturday could have been mistaken for a mid-summer day, with clear sunny skies, it was a great day for Northern Wairoa soccer team as they notched up their first win of the season.

After losing their first two games of the season, the team was ecstatic to walk away with a 6-0 win over Onerahi.

The visitors struggled with numbers on the day and Northern Wairoa were quick to take advantage with two early goals from Evan Montgomery. A mixture of strong defence and offensive play saw the half time score sit at 3–0.

The second half saw the visitors manage a number of strong attacks but were unlucky not to convert any of their chances.

Glen Mariscal slotted in the home teams fourth goal of the day with a neatly placed header over the keeper after some ping pong like play saw the ball rattle the crossbar twice.

Northern Wairoa maintained their dominance for the full 90 minutes with two more goals coming late in the game with a well placed long shot from Colin McCullough and brilliant control after a cross saw Louis Flight score his first goal of the season.

The team now looks ahead to their next game against Tikipunga this Friday as they play an evening game under lights.

The fixture will be the first night game for many of the Northern Wairoa team.

Acrylic Painting with Pauline GoughSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmPauline has had a very successful year selling her paintings locally, nationally and internationally and we are thrilled that she has agreed to hold a workshop to share her knowledge. This workshop is aimed for beginners to advanced painters and is not about ‘know how’ but about being inspired and creating. Although Pauline will demonstrate certain techniques, the intention is for you to get excited about the business of painting and find your own style. The most important thing is to have fun and surprise yourself!

Wirework Jewellery with Jennifer CrundwellSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmAlso a fully qualified tutor in Art Clay Silver, she has also produced fine pieces using beading, and ceramics, enjoying success with a collaborative pendant, taking 3rd place in the prestigious International UK Bead Competition held in London. A regular entrant in the Adornment Section of the Kaipara Art Awards, she took out 1st and 3rd in 2012, and 1st and 2nd in the 2013 event.

Harmony Singing with Maura & Peter FlowerSaturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 10:30am to 3:00pmSinging harmony is a true art form. Why does it sound so good, and how does it work? This workshop is an amazing opportunity to learn with two inspirational vocal coaches. Maura and Peter Flower need little introduction to the people of Northland. They are both heavily involved with Kaipara’s own Otamatea Repertory Theatre where they teach aspiring singers and actors of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced singer, you will come away from this workshop, sounding better than when you arrived.

What’s eating your guava? by Joanne Speechly

The Australian guava moth has made its way to the Kaipara and chances are, they are feasting and breeding on a fruit tree near you.

“This is the first year it has been reported in Dargaville and it’s travelled right down through Tinopai,” says Northland Regional Council’s Carl Cooper.

“The moth was first identified in the Far North year’s ago and at the time we notified MAF who believed that they would die out in the frosts but when they got down to Kaeo, they realised that they were here to stay.”

The small, black and white, speckled moth was first discovered in Kaitaia in 1997. It lays its eggs at the ends of fruit and the caterpillar hatches out and burrows into the fruit, where it feeds and produces frass (excrement), encouraging the growth of fungus.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t a great deal people can do to fix the problem — apart

from hygiene around your trees. Remove fallen and rotting fruit and associated leaf litter from beneath trees and bury or burn it and this will help to control pupating guava moths,” adds Mr Cooper.

Guava moths infest fruit all year round and its hosts include guava and feijoa this time of year. They are also known to infest citrus throughout winter and spring, loquats in spring, plums, peaches and nashi pear in summer and macadamia nuts from summer through to early winter.

Advice about a range of insects and other pests is available from the regional council’s website www.nrc.govt.nz/nasties. Biosecurity officers can also be contacted via the council’s freephone 0800 002 004.

Growing safe and happy kids by Joanne Speechly

SKIP stands for Strategies with Kids, Information for Parents and the SKIP vision is that all children will be raised in a positive way.

This involves parents loving and nurturing their children, as well as setting boundaries to guide and teach them. Locally, SKIP comes under the umbrella of Kaipara Abuse Prevention and the guidance of coordinator, Yvette Gilchrist.

“We offer positive parenting projects, with a focus on developing community relationships,” says Yvette. “Projects use experiential learning and require full parental par ticipation, promoting attachment.

“SKIP is a nationwide body, so all our resources are uniform but each community will have its own projects. For example, over summer, we’ve been running our Water Babies class and in the past we’ve had a preschool Circus Kumarani class.

People do not have to apply to be part of the SKIP network, the only requirement is a commitment to positive parenting. Parents may create their own groups and ask SKIP for assistance.

“SKIP programmes are free and inclusive and we have an open

door policy, so people are welcome to call in. Our projects work well because we get lots of different parents, with lots of different skills, learning from each other — role modelling positive parenting in the community.”

Brainwave Trust presenter and university lecturer Nathan Mikaere-Wallis will be hosting a early years and adolescent brain development seminar in Dargaville on May 15.

Contact SKIP on 09 439 7009, email [email protected] or visit the Skip Kids facebook page.

Yvette Gilchrist specialises in promoting the SKIP message through interactive parenting projects and developing positive community relationships
